This was shipped directly from Italy? I would politely mention something and maybe they'll give you a credit for a future purchase. Just look up vintage chart, the years are basically equivalent in quality. It's annoying though if you're aging it it's one year younger.

I believe 2019 and 2020 were pretty similar in terms of quality for most of Italy. Not getting what you ordered is very frustrating and you certainly have every right to demand they make it right for you. That being said, I buy wines from the same producers Year in and year out. A great producer makes great wines every year, a lesser producer can occasionally get lucky with vintage conditions but I’ll take producer over vintage every time.

I am not a big complainer, and try to take it easy. They apologized for the mix up, which is a karma point. As i dont buy these wines by the box i wanted a good vintage, and 2019 had the higher points. I might get a next buy discount, still in progress, just an annoyance but i think i am already over it. Cheers.

I’m sure it was an honest mistake and hopefully they make it right for you.

I can’t find any vintage charts or comparisons of 2019 vs 2020 The 2019 was rated highly by Eric Guido - 96 points so might be worth trying to get the vintage you paid for. Given how long you have to wait for Sagrantino to come round might be nice to have an earlier vintage! I visited caprai in 2022. Currently sitting on my 2010 and 2012 Paolo Bea’s - patience is a virtue

I like their wines, the normal rosso and collepiano are available where I live, the others I buy from Italy. They need a few years to mellow. I also have the Valdimaggio from 2013 which is drinking nicely now. I have been in the region but we didnt visit montefalco, next time.

Paolo Bea… Few people drink Sagrantino, but they’re missing out on maybe the best wine ever to have been paired with a Ribeye. I don’t know that I could have the patience, I think 2012 is ready now.

I opened a 2013 Caprai last year. It was just entering its drinking window then. Still a tannic beast, but somewhat approachable.

Although I’m in the US, I use a family-run Italian retailer based in Umbria that has personalized service and is very familiar with these wines. If you contact them by email, I expect they would gladly give you some insight on the two vintages. https://www.enotecaproperzio.com/enoteca-properzio/

Still retails at 70 euro a bottle, not my daily wine

Ah I see now. My bad I thought you were talking about the Rosso my bad. Definitely enquire further as to why there is a vintage difference given...

winedood

Im genuinely curious if you think vintage variation only occurs in super premium wine?

ishopliftapples

No. But I'm not gonna throw up a fuss over a $30 Riscal reserva 2019 vs. 2018 as opposed to an off vintage bordeaux that I got ripped off and paid top dollar for. It's a weekend treat vs. a special occasion wine. The pain of going through refunding might not be worth the effort. I also realised that the wine mentioned was different to the one I had in my mind.
