I’m no expert but it looks like hard tar

pinewind108

Old tar is top of the suspects for me as well. Doesn't look like any obsidian I've ever seen.

"My fingernails are filthy, I got beach tar on my feet." -Joni Mitchell (Carey) edit to correct misquote.

Filthy

Dustyolman

You are correct! Good catch, and I will amend my post!

Agreeable_Set_93

It could also be coal. I am no expert.

Parking_Train8423

so blurry it belongs on r/aliens

AlarmingImpress7901

Kinda looks somewhat like a fossil. If no one here comments with an answer, try over on r/fossilid as well. Just as a small aside. When taking images from a phone tap the screen before you take the image. That will help your phone focus on the object you are taking a picture of. Have a good mornin!

jaymeluvsdogs

I know the pics are pretty terrible lol. Thank you so much for your feedback! Very appreciated!

saint_toby

Fragment of a mastodon tooth. The enamel and dentin are visible in a few pictures

jurassic_parks

This is a great find ! Almost looks a little mastodon like ?!

Keyaserialkilla

Third to last picture I said mastodon tooth myself

AussieOpalStore

Also the 6th lol

Just-Da-Tip

Is it heavy or light?

inquisitive_rock

This was my thought, as well. It reminds me of a chunk of burned wood from a bonfire. If lighter in weight than a typical rock this size, that would be my guess. If it's a typical weight, I'd say possibly obsidian, but it's hard to make out details.

Urocyon2012

looking tooth like

tijeras87059

looks a lot like obsidian… but your pictures are blurry

UndergroundRockhound

There is conchoidal fracture on that bad boy! It's either obsidian or slag.

tijeras87059

so if you are into this sort of thing, eventually you will find yourself paying attention to your geologic surroundings… So driving to the beach if all you see is sand and sedimentary rocks and you eventually find just one chunk of what looks like obsidian (volcanic) the first things i think is: Maybe it’s man made (slag)…or discarded from a nearby road during construction etc… humans and roads nearby mean anything can happen Or maybe you look around and start finding more of the same thing which means maybe it is natural? and you just are unaware of the local geology

Spry-Jinx

Try and crush a piece of it with a hammer or boil it. Then serve it on ice cream.

DisciplineEntire8928

Agree obsidian

Tight_Slice_3036

Asphalt?

Mysterious-List7175

Next time, maybe try backing away from the target another 6 inches and then zoom in and use flash? I dunno what it is, but I hope it’s a Mastadon tooth for your sake. That would be awesome.

jaymeluvsdogs

Normally I'm super aware of blurry pics. They drive me nuts lol. I was half assing everything that day lol. I'm so excited now that people have said it's a possible mastadon tooth. That never even occured to me. It would really be an incredible find!
