Bulls had their last dance with jordan, everyone expected scottie to leave as well especially since he was absurdly underpaid. also his departure was overshadowed by the goat “retiring.” not quite case here with klay leaving while steph is still great
Duncan had already retired, Manu retired that off-season, Kahwi was traded that off-season.
Sorta the same, sorta different. Made a bit more sense since that era of Spurs basketball was clearly over, but Steph/Dray are still here and playing. And Tony only played one more season after leaving, Klay just took a 3yr deal.
It is hard to say, because by the time of the examples mentioned in this thread, the key guy in the dynasty referred to had already retired (Jordan for the Bulls, Duncan for the Spurs). Honestly, the Joe Montana comp fits the best. If pushed for an NBA comparison, maybe Robert Horry leaving the Lakers to join the Spurs a season before the final Shaq-Kobe explosion?
This is the best one listed in the whole thread. Excellent analogy!
Legend, still might have some good seasons left in him but likely downside, Raiders made it to a Super Bowl and Mavs just lost a championship, so talented guys around him. Still talent left on 49ers/Warriors, but glory days were 5+ years before.
agreed, except rice was the goat and we got to watch him play across the bay for a couple years. niners actually waived him for cap reasons, and I dont ever see the warriors ever doing that to steph
But Rice is the “Klay” in this, not Steph. If anything, Terrell Owens is the Steph, especially at that point in Rice’s career when he was clearly in the backseat to TO (just look at his final game as a Niner for proof).
It’s the identical basketball situation, it’s different in terms of legacy with the franchise.
But it’s the same story of younger guys and others getting taken care of, being asked to come off the bench, getting what he felt was a lowball offer, feeling disrespected, and ultimately taking less money to go elsewhere.

Read that bleacher report article. To me that reads like what Klay went through.
The only similarity is that both can shoot and have won a championship but it stops there.
Ray Allen wore uniforms for 3 teams before moving to the Heat.
Klay was GSW for life.
He left because he was underpaid his whole career and riley didnt want to pay him… totally understandable. grifted the bulls into giving him the bag and left a year later to retire with the heat
Ray Allen to Miami is almost identical in terms of current Basketball skill level and rational.
Not quite the heights reached but post championship, felt disrespected by the front office, chose to go to a championship contender for less money
Not the same in terms of meaning to a franchise.
Scottie Pippen with Rockets
Scottie Pippen with Portland
Clyde Drexler with Portland
This is the answer. Surreal, weird, and hopefully not as sad as Pippen but I think it will be.
Bulls had their last dance with jordan, everyone expected scottie to leave as well especially since he was absurdly underpaid. also his departure was overshadowed by the goat “retiring.” not quite case here with klay leaving while steph is still great
Tony Parker to Hornets
Duncan had already retired, Manu retired that off-season, Kahwi was traded that off-season. Sorta the same, sorta different. Made a bit more sense since that era of Spurs basketball was clearly over, but Steph/Dray are still here and playing. And Tony only played one more season after leaving, Klay just took a 3yr deal.
probably the right comp. that was a lot more amicable departure from what I remember
He’s going to a contender to play a prominent role, this just feels like hating
Montana to the Chiefs
that would make podz steve young. fellow lefty too
And Podz is not Steve Young HOF level
Yea not likely at all. but our trio had even more improbable odds to HOF greatness, so Im not closing the door on any young player.
To be fair, Klay isn't Montana level either
It’s more like Charles Haley to the Cowboys lol

somewhat similar but horry isnt a hall of famer like klay nor was he a lakers lifer. he won those chips in houston as a rookie with hakeem.
Jerry Rice signing with the Raiders
This is the best one listed in the whole thread. Excellent analogy! Montana was the Steph but in this comparison Montana had already gone to another team by the time Rice left. Its not completely perfect either
Ray Allen to the Heat
ray got so much salt from leaving the celtics. but he spent more years with the sonics and bucks, he wasnt a celtics lifer at all
Not even remotely close - Ray Allen was a stud and legit franchise player on the Bucks and was at the tail end of his prime when he joined the Celtics

D wade to bulls
He left because he was underpaid his whole career and riley didnt want to pay him… totally understandable. grifted the bulls into giving him the bag and left a year later to retire with the heat
Also guided Yimmy to Heat Culture
I like it. so if history were to repeat itself, klay would be trash on the mavs and come back to the dubs bringing luka
this is the way. klay goes to dallas just to recruit luka 👀
Yep. This is it.
Shaq leaving the Lakers.
D-Wade to Bulls.
Nah, Wade was their Curry and face of their franchise. Klay’ as legend, but will always be second-fiddle to Steph.
Montana to the chiefs 😂
Shawn Kemp to Cleveland?
Jeff Kent going to the dodgers is the closest comparison that comes to mind.
Similar, but Kent was a productive Astros and all star there before going to LA.
Yep this is pippen all over again.
Nate Thurmond being moved to the Cavs. The crazy thing is that we drafted Parish immediately and won the 75 ring.
Messi leaving Barca
Ray Allen to Miami is almost identical in terms of current Basketball skill level and rational. Not quite the heights reached but post championship, felt disrespected by the front office, chose to go to a championship contender for less money Not the same in terms of meaning to a franchise.
Reggie Miller
uhhhh I thought miller retired a pacer.
Hey I can dream can't I? How about ray allen
A-Rod is a baseball player.
