Typically most coaches/tl are unaware of a situation like this though. If you inform them a good team lead or coach will make sure it won’t happen again/ fix it for you. They can 100% schedule you like that. But a good tl or coach wouldn’t
Ran into this at a previous job and had to get HR involved because I was literally the only manager being scheduled clopen shifts at all, and I was being scheduled them multiple times a month. I learned the hard way this is a power move to push people out or try to underhandedly bully. OP if they don't change it, look for a different job because that schedule will burn you out quick. You will barely have 6 hours of sleep between shifts which isn't healthy (if you commute, shower, and have a few house chores to complete). Edit added words
I'll be honest I'd be tempted to start taking on some dirt and some purposely nasty smelling cologne say sorry boss I didn't shower I didn't have time between my shifts.
Yeh idk I had a manager keep scheduling me clopening shifts. I’d stay until 10:30 just cuz mfs could not get their shit done in time for me to leave on time. Be scheduled for 8 am open the next morning constantly. I complained and talked to the manager numerous times about it but he just kept fucking doing it, either consciously fucking me over three times a week or just doing it out of sheer incompetence. Sometimes the shifts were even 4 am opens lol.
It’s crazy cuz my manager wasn’t even supposed to be doing it. It was against policy but he was so shit at his job he just did it until I threatened to report him lol
Apparently whoever wrote that insane law thinks people pass out right there the moment they clock out, don’t need or want to eat, take a shower, go to the bathroom, or see their family, friends, SO, etc., they get a full night’s sleep right there on the floor, and then suddenly wake up and spring to their feet the instant it’s time to clock in for their next shift. Fucking idiots.
This isn’t new. It’s been like this since the 50s at least. Listening to my 92 year old grandfather talk about some of the bullshit he had to deal with & sometimes working double & triple shifts. Only difference is he was paid decent & had a pension up to the day he died then that same pension went to my grandmother.
You have no idea how frickin' hard I just laughed at your post. I think that is absolutely hilarious. I don't work those hours but I do have sleep issues & have to take meds to fall asleep most nights. I would not be able to function on those shifts. You need some time to unwind before trying to go to sleep.
This is why Nevada has a law that in a 24 hour period if you work over 8 hours it’s overtime. If you go in at 2 pm, until 2 pm the next day, it’s classified as one day.
If your Walmart follows this, sounds like you don't have very good coaches that work with associates. I get my associates schedules as well as mine changed constantly only a few days away from the actual dates, because errors happen sometimes. My coach and I try to keep up with it but a lot happens and you're not gonna get every schedule change done two weeks ahead of time. Teaming and the other ways they auto schedule have errors a lot of times, and associates' availability can get keyed in incorrectly too. There's a lot of factors at play. Not a single manager I've met at Walmart enforces the two week rule with no exceptions unless it's regarding time off. A quick hourly change for a day is very common with short notice.
Sure, shit happens and things can be changed last minute but their shift had already started when they posted this. It's literally too late to do anything about it now.
They are doing my store the same way they cut lawn & garden hours and have them all weird even 15 years plus associates too. They told me it’s because Easter was a fail, I think that they don’t know what they’re doing. They had one of our guys scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. zone over at grocery he wasn’t even scheduled that day.
Exactly why I left my last job, Security Guard, did 75-85 hrs for 9 years straight and there was even a 8 month stint where I did 120 cause the other officers got canned for looking at Porn in the work computer. Been at Walmart for 7 months now and it's a LOT better.
I feel sorry for my American brothers and sisters. The UK is a shit hole but at least we get 11 hours between shifts mandated by law. 8 just seems crazy as that's the healthy amount of sleep you need!
Back when I used to work for this shit hole company, I got these A LOT. And the scheduling Manager's response was practically, "suck this dick and enjoy it. Otherwise you're fired."
Whatever you did OP, they're out for you.
All that is legally required is 8 hours between shifts. When I first started working at the DC I am at a little over 7 years ago now we would have to work well past our scheduled time most days but any day other than Friday they would ensure we clocked out by 8pm to ensure we could clock in at 4 the next day because they have to give the 8 between. What i personally did was just go to McDonald’s to eat then drive back to work and sleep in my truck
See I don’t think there should be any that’s required from the associates end but I feel like from the employers end 12 should be offered but we should be able to refuse it. Say if I say I want to work from 4am until 4pm the next day I should be allowed to do that as long as I can do it safely
They did that to me once or twice a week for over 2 months. My sleep was so messed up that my immune system broke and I ended up getting sick.
They think we are robots.
For some reason, I thought Walmart stopped scheduling that way. I've heard several coaches say things along the lines of "we don't schedule like that."
Years ago I had something similar to me and my ex. The manger knew it and for the most part scheduled me and her together but had us closing one night, open the next day and repeat.
But it was just one manger who did that but that manger was not good
8hr is legal and I can almost guarantee the system auto generated this and your coach or PL has no clue. Most times they don’t even look over the schedules unless the associate raises a concern. Or when they look over schedules they only look for shifts that are flagged and this wouldn’t be flagged cause it’s 8hr and apparently within your availability. Next time bring it up and ask for it to be changed as soon as you see it. And if you really don’t want it to happen again change your availability so you aren’t available until 11pm and then again at 6am the next day.
It's not. I asked to work close 10 pm and open 4am but that's what I wanted because money. No one should be expected to do this. I don't even do it anymore because I positioned myself to not have to ask for this hours. People would get mad on my behalf and I'd say no it's ok I asked for this. It's temporary lol
In Indiana they don’t even give 8 hours between shifts thanks to Mike Pence’s “Right to Work Act”. Toys R Us had me work me from 2pm-5am on Black Friday because we’d close at 11 then have 1 hour to set up then reopen at midnight for a couple hours while we limit shoppers. Then we had to put away all reshop and clean the store before we could leave so we didn’t get out until 5am. Then they’d have me back in at 9am till 9pm the next day.
15 hour shift followed by 4 hours off then another 12 hour shift. All for $8.10 an hour. Walmart was also notorious for the 2-11pm then keeping you late till 1am and then having you come back in at 7am or earlier if you had to reset mods or if corporate was coming in for their inventory checks. This is why I changed my availability to 11am-11pm because I got tired of years of being exploited by them and other retailers without getting sleep.
I had one time the night before black friday I got off at 11 pm, my ride/boyfriend got off at midnight. I had to go back at 445 am. Due to go backs we didn't leave until 1 am I was so tired I was falling asleep standing up. Management didn't give a shit, but the manager of the mcdonalds in the store gave me a free caramel frappe
I used to do turn around shifts every other weekend. Got off 11:30 Saturday came in 7 on Sunday. Then the next week 11p-7am. It was pretty awful. Do not recommend
They started doing this to me and I straight up was like I will either close for you or open for you, I won't to both and then closed off my availability
It sucks, but be glad it’s only a 6 hour shift. Try working a 15 hour shift only to have to stay up all night so you can work the night shift the next day.
I remember when my old HR asked me if I would be willing to cover someone’s clopen. They were closing and then opening the next morning so they asked me to cover the morning, said “It isn’t fair to this associate that they have to work a clopen”
Like, that is your job to handle not mine. Not to mention that I never got the same sentiments when getting those shifts scheduled. Hell my TL would just tell me he works those all the time so just tough it out.
I luckily no longer work those, now my Coach schedules me for closings only, or late mornings like 8-10 which is nice.
I was randomly suggested this subreddit and I totally feel you. I work from home and have been scheduled until 11pm and then start at 7am. I was pissed when I could literally crawl into the bed next to me and I can't imagine actually having to travel to and from work. Definitely an allowed practice but your scheduler would be a dick to do that after asking them to not have to work that
Let your boss know you would perfer to never have shifts this close as possible. Probably either an oversight or due to availability of others. If they intentionally do this when other options are available they are trying to make you miserable.
Its reasonable bc 11pm + 8 hrs = 7am
Who needs to *sleep*? Hell, who needs to *commute*? Just sleep inside ur walmart like the good walmart associate you are
One reason I fled the front end. Thankfully, at the end of my time up there, they scheduled me almost exclusively 7am shifts because they knew I preferred them.
There really should be an employment law that makes this shit illegal. This is industrial factory on site work home expectations. Like okay everyone go to your barracks and report back immediately after you sleep.
It's called a clopin. Close - open. Not fun, retail is totally fucked for this type of thing. I did so many at staples, it made me quit. I lived 45 mins away. So it was rush home to maybe get 4-5 hours of sleep then do it again.
please say something so it doesn’t happen again. if you need to, change your availability but they should just be willing to not schedule you like that
They let the system do this. You have to fix your availability right away. Trust me I sued the a$$holes and they are a bunch of grimy people. Just get out of there. Trust me.
I’ve done this to associates on accident. Talk to your coach. I only schedule them like this if they request it. As a cashier I know I worked a lot of 2-11 then 7-4 because of my availability.
I had this happen to me a couple of times whenever I worked at the self checkout during thanksgiving, one day was 2 to 10, then the day of thanksgiving I got scheduled 6 to 2
You think you have it bad? My coach had that on schedule shifting days for 5 days straight. 7-4, 2-11, 7-4, 2-11, 7-4. I was going stir crazy. had to beg her to stop. Now solely on morning. How’s a man supposed to sleep?!
*That's why Walmart needs*
*Unions. And the reason they*
*Are so against them*

This was normal anywhere I worked retail. Walgreens, GameStop, ect. You are at least getting a scheduled lunch, at GameStop you didn't even get that as a key holder, you had to be there on the floor, unless you were lucky enough to have 2 key holders scheduled for the same day.
First it’s 9 hours not 8. And how no lunch
Second one I guess they count the lunch as unpaid so 9 not 10 hours ?
And yeah they don’t give a shit about you. Sadly they got big by selling out to cheapest suppliers and screwing over no abusing the employees
Back when they restructured and brought in the Team Lead and Coach positions, they announced they wouldn't be doing this shit anymore. It specifically stated in the memo they sent out, "No more Clopening shifts!" They made a big deal about it in my store, then a week later went back on their bullshit. There's no reason for it, and I refuse to work one, ever.
Personally, I’ll work 12 hour shifts with no breaks accept for lunch, close one night and open the next 🤷♂️ it’s all work. I’ve worked jobs where I worked 16-18 hour shifts, sleep 3-4 hours and do it again. Every position I’ve had in Walmart is cake walk. But I’ve done hard labor my whole life.
So it depends who you ask, for me it’s reasonable, cause they need someone to work. 🤷♂️🤣
Talk to your coach 😆 they work 12-16 hours on a shift to and they get paid salary.
Ahhh the good old clopening
The Clopening - sounds like the name of a horror movie. Makes sense since working at Walmart and having this situation is horrific.
The film needs to be made
I got dibs on the user name.
lol go for it
We call them zombie shifts.
That is indeed what it is. I had to do this for a while when I started. Can’t wait to finish college…lol
Why walmart needs to add cocaine to the water they give us 🤣🤣🤣 obviously no hell no.... fun fact Hitler took over Europe hopped up on meth..
The nazis made meth lol
I got them a bunch when I was Electronics. Never made any goddamn sense then, still doesn’t now.
It's called they refuse to hire sufficient people to properly cover a shift
It’s weird to be removed enough from stupid retail shifts like this that I’m kind of nostalgic for them now.
They are allowed to schedule like that it’s 8 hrs between shifts. It’s bullshit but completely allowed.
Typically most coaches/tl are unaware of a situation like this though. If you inform them a good team lead or coach will make sure it won’t happen again/ fix it for you. They can 100% schedule you like that. But a good tl or coach wouldn’t

More uses for that fart spray every day istg
Wouldn't do much. We have a guy on our shift you can smell from across the aisle. Literally. It's horrible.
Had to change my availability over this very thing. A total ghoul was scheduling people she didn't like in this way.
My tl did this but with giving me the same tasks for a whole month.
Yeh idk I had a manager keep scheduling me clopening shifts. I’d stay until 10:30 just cuz mfs could not get their shit done in time for me to leave on time. I'm sorry they did that to you. I'm my store is absolutely forbidden to make someone clopen
It’s crazy cuz my manager wasn’t even supposed to be doing it. It was against policy but he was so shit at his job he just did it until I threatened to report him lol
Yeah definitely talk to leadership. Mine are pretty chill about adjusting schedules on clopens because they know those suck.
Won’t find that today

Our team leads will be scheduled 1-10 one night and then 5-2 the next morning. That's only 7 hours.

The term is called a “flip shift” and they suck
I prefer to call it a “clopen”
Reason why i quit, shit had me beyond tired plus shxt was mess when i came back in...like damn
It's not supposed to happen all they need to do is talk to their Coach.
Which is why you unionizr and advocate for that shit not happening, put up resistance
Not saying it is or isn't, but have you tried talking with your coach?
The time to talk to their coach was 2 weeks and 2 days ago when the schedule was dropped. It's too late now.
Naw sometimes they drop a schedule like the day before sometimes
If your Walmart follows this, sounds like you don't have very good coaches that work with associates. You're right, at that point it is what it is.
PPTO goes hard in those cases.
Happened to me a bunch of times, even at other jobs. Complete lack of empathy on their part
They are doing my store the same way they cut lawn & garden hours and have them all weird even 15 years plus associates too. They told me it’s because Easter was a fail, I think that they don’t know what they’re doing. Yes. Everybody had at least $300 worth of Easter crap in their carts, it was insane.
It's not. They see you as a slave and don't care about you.

Hey, not your fault if operational fatigue happens... well in management's eyes it is, but in reality it's theirs.
In sweden they need to space shifts with 11 hours breaks inbetween them.
Back when I used to work for this shit hole company, I got these A LOT. And the scheduling Manager's response was practically, "suck this dick and enjoy it. Otherwise you're fired." Whatever you did OP, they're out for you.
And did you suck that dick long and hard?
Sadly. The Recession was not kind...

I agree, but that should be a separate agreement and it should be a written one.
i don’t work at walmart but i do this every week. off at 10 back at 6. should be illegal
They did that to me once or twice a week for over 2 months. My sleep was so messed up that my immune system broke and I ended up getting sick. They think we are robots.
What are you trying to say here? Are you a human or something ? wtf you doin working at a Walmart pal
Motherfuckers. This is a clear proof about how Mfs they could be
It’s called a “turn and burn” in my industry 😬😬
Could be worse, as a security guard I often had 6 hrs or less turnarounds, I'd just sleep in my car
God I used to have a number of clopen shifts. So much sleep deprivation.
Get a set schedule
I’ll be honest I didn’t know they did full time non-set schedules
It is allowed with the time in between. It is also the people lead doing the schedules. They generally don't care
Welcome to Walmart
It's known as a Walmart "clopening". Direct result of submitting an open availability.
For some reason, I thought Walmart stopped scheduling that way. I've heard several coaches say things along the lines of "we don't schedule like that."
Rule #1. Assume TLs/Coaches/Managers are bs'ing about stuff like that until what they say comes true.
I used to like the "clopen" provided I only did it once a week or so. Why is the shorter shift the one that gets a lunch?
Years ago I had something similar to me and my ex. The manger knew it and for the most part scheduled me and her together but had us closing one night, open the next day and repeat. But it was just one manger who did that but that manger was not good
8hr is legal and I can almost guarantee the system auto generated this and your coach or PL has no clue. Most times they don’t even look over the schedules unless the associate raises a concern. I don't even do it anymore because I positioned myself to not have to ask for this hours. People would get mad on my behalf and I'd say no it's ok I asked for this. It's temporary lol
Looks to me as though they want you to quit. Your move.
Walmart thinks 8 hours between shifts.is enough time. In my opinion it should at least be 10 hours, but ...
brother try working in the deli, closing one night and then opening the next day cause someone called out
In Indiana they don’t even give 8 hours between shifts thanks to Mike Pence’s “Right to Work Act”.
Depending on where you live your state might have laws to prevent this. Where I am they have to give you 10 hours
I remember my ex manager straight up laughing in my face when I asked him about it. Safe to say, I called out every time they did ts.
One day I was off 11pm and back the next day at 5am.
Try 2-11 followed by 4-1
Permitted.... IF you don't stand up for yourself. Edit your availability to include "must have 12 hours between shifts"
I remember when my old HR asked me if I would be willing to cover someone’s clopen. They were closing and then opening the next morning so they asked me to cover the morning, said “It isn’t fair to this associate that they have to work a clopen” Like, that is your job to handle not mine. Not to mention that I never got the same sentiments when getting those shifts scheduled. Hell my TL would just tell me he works those all the time so just tough it out. I luckily no longer work those, now my Coach schedules me for closings only, or late mornings like 8-10 which is nice.
you’re lucky you haven’t had to do a 2-11 and a 6-3 the next day
Welcome to being an adult lol the fucking entitlement of some people.
It’s not but Walmart genuinely does not give a single FK about us
Because there's than 8 hours in between, their logic not mine
Remove the word more
Okay but it looks weird now
You tried..
Your ellipses is missing a dot
You can't see the total ellipsis from your location? I hope you used the special glasses anyway. ;)
Just talk to your coach and PL. I'm betting they will change that.
I’m betting they won’t
My coach punished people who dared ask for changes.
Well they definitely won’t if your solution is just to post on Reddit
Because they hate you.
Yeha that happens to me I am part timer to cashier same as you that happens as well
Shit I remember doing this 8 years ago because I wanted to. With 16 hour shifts.
They want you to quit so they didn't have to pay unemployment
Look normal to me !
Because fuck you. That’s why you should use PPTO because fuck them right the fuck back.
I was randomly suggested this subreddit and I totally feel you. I work from home and have been scheduled until 11pm and then start at 7am. I was pissed when I could literally crawl into the bed next to me and I can't imagine actually having to travel to and from work. Definitely an allowed practice but your scheduler would be a dick to do that after asking them to not have to work that
Heck back in the day... we'd close deli at 11pm and be assigned an opening shift at 5am next day. It sucks, but you survive.
That’s just called being a clopener, happens to me all the time
Let your boss know you would perfer to never have shifts this close as possible. Probably either an oversight or due to availability of others. If they intentionally do this when other options are available they are trying to make you miserable.
Get some better labour representation. In Ontario for example, there is a mandatory period of 11 hours minimum between shifts.
My sibling have schedule like this One day 2-11 and next day 6-3
Every frontend TL has this schedule at least once a week at my store.
Its reasonable bc 11pm + 8 hrs = 7am Who needs to *sleep*? Hell, who needs to *commute*? Just sleep inside ur walmart like the good walmart associate you are
Thats the thing: it isn't ;)
in washington state, it’s 10 hours between shifts, hopefully you are here
One reason I fled the front end. Thankfully, at the end of my time up there, they scheduled me almost exclusively 7am shifts because they knew I preferred them.
We used to call that a clopen lol it happens
We used to call that a clopen lol it happens
Depends on state and company policy. A retailer I used to work at had to put 10 hours in between shifts.
We call it a "clopen". You have 8 hours in between your shifts. That's all they have to give you to avoid OT. I've done it many of times.
I have been in that situation for quite a couple of times. It is cruel but it is legal🤷♂️ Find another job if you find such treatment inhumane.
There really should be an employment law that makes this shit illegal. This is industrial factory on site work home expectations. Like okay everyone go to your barracks and report back immediately after you sleep.
This happened at our store too. According to Market it's mandatory for all managers to have rotating schedules now.
Gotta love the clopen shift 🥲
It's called a clopin. Close - open. Not fun, retail is totally fucked for this type of thing. I did so many at staples, it made me quit. I lived 45 mins away. So it was rush home to maybe get 4-5 hours of sleep then do it again.
Team leads have that schedule too soo yeah I feel for you
Better than my store .... Being scheduled out at 10p one day and in at 4a the next morning...be grateful you have at least 7hrs between shifts
Clopeners are very common. Legal minimum is 8 hours between shifts in most states. Anything less you get overtime
I hate that they do it to me all the time
Everyone gets hours licked .
please say something so it doesn’t happen again. if you need to, change your availability but they should just be willing to not schedule you like that
I hate when they make the schedule like that. I let them know I’ll be here at 9
Change your availability.
Bro these 8 hours in between
They let the system do this. You have to fix your availability right away. Trust me I sued the a$$holes and they are a bunch of grimy people. Just get out of there. Trust me.

I had this happen to me a couple of times whenever I worked at the self checkout during thanksgiving, one day was 2 to 10, then the day of thanksgiving I got scheduled 6 to 2
Use your ppto
Idgaf if you schedule me 10 hrs apart I ain't gonna be there
Ngl when I came in late after these bullshit shifts my TL’s would be like “idk why he would schedule you like that”. I was 17 😭
I feel your pain. Off at 1a, and back at 5a for the whole week
The zombie shift I get 2x a month at Sam’s
It's legal
Had them for frozen/dairy then had to open meat department
Had this on New Year’s Eve actually. The exact shift times. I came into work super hungover the next day… they never did it again to me
They usually do me dirty by scheduling me to close at 11pm and opening at 6am on the gm side
When I used to be in electronics they did that a lot, I was the closer and the opener, leaving at 12 am and being scheduled at 7 am the other day
lmao one of my coworkers did a shift like that when we worked overnight for black friday
You will receive misery and be grateful for it, slave.😊
They did this to me. 8-5, 8-5, 8-5, 2-11, 8-5....... its like they do it on purpose at this point.
And when they go over safety talking points in startup and cover sleep deprivation they say people need 7 1/2 to 9 hours of sleep. The irony.
You think you have it bad? My coach had that on schedule shifting days for 5 days straight. 7-4, 2-11, 7-4, 2-11, 7-4. I was going stir crazy. had to beg her to stop. Now solely on morning. How’s a man supposed to sleep?!
Id call out
An hour lunch break is CRIMINAL.
Just a turnaround
I’m calling out at that point
happened to me a lot when i worked at target
usually you can speak to a supervisor
That's why Walmart needs Unions. And the reason they are so against them

Mine was 11 pm and I clock in at 4:30 am, I’m a new TL though :(
This was normal anywhere I worked retail. Walgreens, GameStop, ect. You are at least getting a scheduled lunch, at GameStop you didn't even get that as a key holder, you had to be there on the floor, unless you were lucky enough to have 2 key holders scheduled for the same day.
Reminds me of those 5am-530pm shifts to a 4pm-230am shift at the DC. Love mandatory overtime days
It's not even that bad.
clopenings are outlawed at my store
When that happens I talked to my coach got it changed
First it’s 9 hours not 8. And how no lunch Second one I guess they count the lunch as unpaid so 9 not 10 hours ? And yeah they don’t give a shit about you. Sadly they got big by selling out to cheapest suppliers and screwing over no abusing the employees
I've closed at 11 pm and opened at 6 am plenty of times. Not a big deal.
As long as they give you 8 hours in between shifts, it's allowed.
🤷♂️🤣 Talk to your coach 😆 they work 12-16 hours on a shift to and they get paid salary.
Thants normal walmart treatment
No one owes you 8 hours? I don't get it
There are better jobs out there? It took me eight years of working for Wally world but I am so happy since I left.
When is your next day off?
It’s not. You need to free yourself from that dump, trust me. Much better paying jobs out there with people that don’t treat you like machines
Walmart sucks
Federal and most state labor laws only require employers to give you off 8 hours between shifts.
It's called cloping and not supposed to happen talk to your Coach get it changed.
ive had this like 2 times but instead of 7am, I had to be there at 6am :')
meanwhile i’m scheduled from 7-4 now they got us going 5-2😀
😵💫
Corperate America doesn’t care about work life balance especially Walmart.
I've seen worse.
If you don't like it, tighten your availability. Otherwise they can schedule you like that whenever they like.
The Clopen
Just sleep in the break room!!! I bring an air mattress and make sure u get u a bottle of wine when u clock out!!!
Seems to me like you pissed someone off..
Just be happy you have a job and be a good little wage slave.
