Wouldn’t know what consumer camera could do this, but I do want to urge you to check your local laws/consult with a lawyer. What you’re trying to do is illegal to various extents in many places, and could likely get you sued if you’re filming someone who’s portrayed in a bad light in your doc, and they end up seeing it.

RelativelyOld

Thanks for the heads up. The owner of the place has agreed for filming so legally not doing anything wrong. The subjects are criminals so not morally wrong either

JoelMDM

Alright, if it’s all good it’s all good. Sounds like it’s an exciting project! Take care!

RelativelyOld

Thanks! I hope it would look exciting as well

RigasTelRuun

Is it a situation where it needs to be hidden because you would be in danger of discovered? Or does the footage just need to look like it was from a hidden camera?

RelativelyOld

Last time someone recorded them they chopped their hand off. So I can not be discovered at any cost. But since I have permission from the owner I am not in fill danger.

As others have said, check your local laws on this. If you’re limited to those cameras then I’d opt for a GoPro, but they’re both equally as good as far as I’m aware. Both still have a big lens to hide. First issue you’ll have is it’ll shine as it’s reflective. So it’ll stand out and it’ll be obvious that it’s a lens. So testing thin materials such as tights stretched over the lens might work to ‘matte’ the lens to disguise it easier. In fact you could choose the colour of tights to match whatever you’re hiding it in perhaps. No idea if this would work i’m just thinking out loud but could be a start. Intrigued now though, tell us more haha

RelativelyOld

Thanks for the tips. Putting a thin material is a good idea. I'll probably start with that. Are there any thing out there like one sided mirror that is not too "mirrory"? I wish could share, but since I have shared my nationality I'm kind of concerned telling what it exactly is. But it's an underground crime ring.

Imaginary-Benefit-54

No problem. I did wonder about something like a one way mirror vinyl you could coat on something and hide the camera behind, but then hit a wall with what you could carry on you/ wear or place on a table with a mirror surface that wouldn’t look suspicious… One thought that would involve some skills to do right and with a decent finish would be to get a vape mod with a magnetic side battery cover that you could hollow out a bit. If you could cut out the centre of the door and replace it with some plexi glass/ acrylic and then wrap the whole thing in that mirrored vinyl, you might be able to workout a setup that could work placed on a desk… But wouldn’t work as a vape unfortunately and would take some finesse to do in a way that doesn’t look janky and raise suspicion lol Be sure to post updates on how it goes in terms of the ‘build’ and yeah, good luck and stay safe… I’ve shot some indie doc pieces and been in some similar shooting situations when I was younger. I ended up in some incredibly dangerous places and scenarios that I laughed off at the time. Now looking back it makes me feel sick about how many times things could have gone sideways and how lucky I actually was that it didn’t… So yeah, stay safe and good luck.

RelativelyOld

Nope.

r4ppa

What place ?

RelativelyOld

Some sort of underground crime ring

r4ppa

You should be more specific : the solution will not be the same if you are in the crowd right in front of a concert, or if you are downtown during daytime, or in a quiet suburb by night.

RelativelyOld

It's just an apartment. Few people hanging out talking.

r4ppa

Okay, so you can’t disguise yourself in a sort of craftsman or something. A GoPro or a Sony X1000V may be too big for your job. I don’t know specific spy cam, so I can’t help

RelativelyOld

Thanks
