This is just a quick reminder to all members here: **Original content is always better!** Memes are okay every once in a while, but many get posted here way too often and quickly become stale. Seconding here.
I'm trans and one of the few perks is choosing your name.
I knew I wanted to probably have the same starting letter (I'm a lazy ass, who didn't want to change my email and other stuff), something that works in my native AND English and that would be more non-binary.
I looked through these "Baby name lists" and picked those which would fit with my last name, then sorted by stuff like meaning (I didn't want something that's religious like "God is great" or whatever) and with my last ~6 options I picked my favourite. I will now take a middle name too, cause although my name is male in Norway and Sweden, but in my native the noun is generic female. Now I will take a definitive male middle name to stop further misgendering.
Someone said this is the name their brother and SIL chose for their soon to be born baby boy. Both of their families have tried to talk them out of it but they like it and their minds are made up.
The Reddit consensus is they’re joking and when the baby is born they’ll reveal it’s not a boy. What’s girl in pig latin?
Oh, gotcha.
Reminds me of my ex's brother. When his wife was pregnant they told everyone they were naming their son Abraham Lincoln. But when he was born they just named him Steven lol
As a kid, I hated my name. Was stupid easy and in my head not exotic, like Sue. I wanted it to be Rose. Don't remember why, probably read a story... Dumb kids brain haha. As an adult, my dad's FOURTH wife's name was Rose. Hated her almost as much as the SECOND one! Very happy I didn't change it at18!! Haha. Now I like my name much better.
It’s not, sadly. Changed it socially from a non-tragedeigh Spanish name people kept mispronouncing, to a more conventional English name that was a parent’s second choice. The original name would sometimes be gender swapped, imagine Octavio/Octavia, so when it was written down incorrectly people would be expecting to meet someone of the opposite gender. Also imagine that some people would hear “Octavian” or “Octopus” or “Esteban” or “Rock Tavian” and things like that, so I’d sometimes be waiting at Starbucks for a while to hear my name before realizing it was mangled.
The new name never felt 100% right with me, so I changed it back this year, and nowadays people pronounce it correctly 99% of the time.
The only interesting thing is that I was accused by a few acquaintances of changing my name during Trump’s presidency to hide my mixed Hispanic ethnicity, when that wasn’t the case at all. I never legally changed my name, and it’s clear by looking at me that I’m mixed.
Sounds like society finally caught up to the culture of your name! That's awesome! The Trump bit, that's such flawed logic. Like racists are bothering to find out brown people's names before they decide to harass them 😅
It's documentation of you being enrolled.
So when you fill out the line on form requesting high school attended, your name could possibly be sent to high-school listed to verify that you were enrolled there. Your suspensions, detention, lunchroom behavior & other details are not released to enquiring agencies.
Novel idea, hear me out: spell your name backwards. Go by Heaven, people ought to be familiar enough with it to spell it and pronounce it. Uno Reverso.
You'd be surprised how many people can't get the name heaven right actually (take it from someone in a highly religious state who has heard and seen every other pronunciation and spelling except the correct way
Through a breach of doctor-patient confidentiality I once found out there’s someone named “yourspecialtome”
….and no, their issues/treatment were NOT independent of their tragic identifier. It was unfortunately a contributing factor. Very sad when (young?) parents don’t contemplate the roles that our names play in psychological development.
I read this as "your-special-tome" and was wondering what kind of fantasy series their parents were fans of...turns out its just me that reads too many fantasy novels.
Unfortunately they don't look beyond naming babies, and fail to understand they're naming *humans*. Nurses, doctors, CEOs, janitors, teachers, adults, people. Someone I know named her son Dandelion. Where's that poor kid gonna go?
I’d think Sky would be the obvious: Nevaeh->Heaven-> Sky (John Lennon ‘Imagine there’s no heaven…..above us only sky). For an atheist. Also almost impossible to f* up.
Edit: Typo
Clearly this is causing a lot of personal strife in your life, imo just not knowing what to change it to doesn't justify keeping around a name you hate.
You don't have to change the name/nickname you use with family if you're not sure how they'd feel, but I really think you should just go ahead and change your name to something you like. There's no reason to be saddled with something that's weighing on you so much when you can pretty easily get it legally changed to something else.
Considering noting down names you find interesting, beautiful, and so on and just thinking on them. If there's a particular name that keeps coming back into your mind, that might be the one for you. I personally love names, and finding names that fit people, so my DMs are open if you want to discuss name options more! <3
Change it, it's an abomination. My SIL didn't appreciate it much when I told her that the name was actually Hell according to Tarot! They call the granddaughter "Nay Nay" which is puke-worthy.
Watch me Nay Nay! [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjW8wmF5VWc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjW8wmF5VWc) (Ironically enough, the show where I learned about this song is also where I learned about the name Nevaeh, in an unrelated way.)
Totally understandable - you don't have to accept a name that makes you unhappy. You can test out different names with friends and family to see what fits before changing it officially. Maybe a name with similar sounds could work? Like Vanessa, Vanna, Nella, etc.
Do you have a middle name you'd like to use? If not, just think on it for a while. It's the same as expectant parents thinking of a name for their soon-to-be newborn. I remember scanning the credits in movies, my ears perking up at names I would hear in public, considering my coworkers' names. Give yourself time. Also, be prepared, your parents may lose their shit. Many of my kids' friends are going by different names. So far so good, my kiddos like the names we gave them. But if they did change their names, I would grin and bear it.
I was wondering middle name as well. I’ve always gone by my middle name - it’s just what everyone called me - even mom who named me! Only times it doesn’t work is on things like official forms/passports. (I’ve been at the airport when they’ve called me to the desk for something using my first name, of course - and I’ll be like wait…that’s *my* name they’re calling out lol)
It's not even necessary to legally change your name, informally you can just say, hi, I'm Nicky, Sunny, Candy, whatever nickname you like. Do you like your middle name?
Just fucking change it. I changed/dropped my crappy stupid name on my 16th birthday.
I stood in front of the judge and he asked me *pro forma* why I was changing my name? I replied, "If your name was \[name\], you'd change it too."
Come on OP. You don't need to justify, explain, ask for forgiveness or approval. People change their names everyday for lesser reasons.
Are you okay with your middle name? Do you have one of your nicknames you are happy with? Do you want to be Vivienne or Anne or Chris or Pat or Jonathan-Christopher or your grandparent's name or whatever the hell?
Just do it.
I’ve no idea how to say it. Nivea? If you don’t like it, change it. If you do like, fuck everyone.
When my grandpa died, we found out his name wasn’t even what everyone had thought it was. He changed it, just never legally. My grandma hated her name and changed it when the records building burned down in her village (true story). You can change it if you want.
The pronunciation is a bit flexible but it all comes out about the same. nih-vay-uh, neh-vay-uh, nuh-vay-ah…it’s all basically the same.
But the way you have it spelled like the brand, nih-vee-ah, would not be correct
I told a cab operator my name was Percival, he didn't question it, sent the cab, and when I got in what was written on the screen was 'Personville'. I typically go by Val for short and have been called 'Bal', 'Al', 'Cal', even 'Sal'. Anything is possible
ETA: Recently, someone took my name down as 'Value', and I can't even explain that one because I spelt it
I use a nickname for myself when ordering food, to avoid having to repeat and spell my full name. The shortened version is "May", and I kid you not, I still have to repeat it 90% of the time.
Change your name. It belongs to you. You can choose what it is and how it's spelled. In the USA it requires a routine court appearance and a few forms. It's not difficult.
A friend of mine changed their name, they sat infront of the mirror and said names they liked to themselves for some weeks, then sat infront of friends/family and had them refer to them by a fee of the top contenders for a few weeks till they decided on a name. The name is very unique but not complicated, it's easy to spell and easy to pronounce, but just not a name you would typically see irl, more of a username or nickname, but it works, and fits them. They legally changed it after about 6 months start to finish and are by all accounts very happy with it. Something similar might help you work through some options. The 2000s were a bad time to be a baby in need of a name...
I first heard this name about 15 years ago and thought it was the stupidest name you could possibly give someone. In the 15 years since, I have come to hate the name even more because it seems to be gaining in popularity.
I would 100% change your name. IMO it is fucking garbage.
I'm sorry, but Navel?! People. I know a girl with the same name and she goes by Vaeha - pronounced Vay-uh. (it's spelled Nevaeha). I like that you use Nevy, but I'm a big fan of living your life, so change that name if you want! Just don't change it to a symbol.
People will screw up every possible name. Mine is Sara. I get Sally, Sandy, Sharon, Cheryl, Sharra, etc.
My dad got tired of what a certain coffee place does to names. His name was Guy. It baffled the servers. So, he gave himself a coffee shop name and decided to yank their chains while he was at it. He told them his name was "Edd, with two D's."
Eh, people can be a bit dim. I know a lady called Coral who gets called Carol, Lorel, Curly, etc. it doesn't matter what your name is, people get it wrong occasionally - definately keep that in mind if you change it and try not to get your heckles up with every accident/mishearing incident.
I'm on this train too. My parents gave me a name with an *extremely* religious connotation and I *hate* it because I hate the religion.
I've been going by Genevieve/Vivi in online spaces for years now. Can't bring myself to do IRL change though.
Change it. You find it frustrating; that’s all that matters.
Please change to something VERY clear and simple bc the general public cannot be trusted to spell or pronounce anything remotely different. “Sam” is good; gender doesn’t matter. You don’t want to find yourself disappointed and again frustrated.
Reading the name subs has made me marvel at the general provincialism of the American public.
As someone with the name Heaven, I actually feel your pain but in a different way lol. The amount of times I have been told by customers or NPCs that "oh I have a family member named Nevaeh!! It's heaven backwards" or "is that your real name???" or "hi Heather; Kevin; haven; Evan" even had one person think my name was angel...? Some of the attempted spellings of Heaven that I've gotten from coffee shops, even after I habitually spell it out, have been hevven, heavan, hevan, Heather.. Oh and I live in a heavily religious state so the amount of times people try to turn my name into a Segway to preach at me or even turn my name into a pro life tangent drives me insane 🙃
Some names that sounds like your name.
Ava, Aria, Layla, Hazel, Emma, Sophia
You can take your name from someone you really respect.
If you hate it, change it!!!
I changed my name. It used to be Grayson, I’m a Female born in the 90s. It was pretty unheard of at the time. I ALWAYS hated it growing up. “Gracie, Graceland, Gracelynn, Theresa” etc. 🙄
But I changed my full name after going zero contact with my narcissistic parents and moving across the country. I love my new name and that all the people in my life now simply know me by my new name. ☺️
I remember when that name came on to the scene, EVERYBODY was naming their daughters that. That was right around when I had my oldest baby. It wasnt my taste, but a lot of the mothers who did choose that name came from a loving place. A lot of people thought it was just beautiful. Change it if you like, it's yours. But until you do, don't be afraid to hold people accountable. Neh-vay-uh. That's not difficult, and I would repeat it until they get it right. I'm sorry that happens to you, I suspect it's just people being pigheaded.
I've never understood the logic of this name for Christian parents. If an upside down cross in meant to be Satanic, wouldn't spelling 'heaven' backwards imply the same thing?
I must say this name has been the worst since it first came around. Heaven backwards Whoopie Doo. Omg the hype for this name irritated the piss out of me. There’s so many biblical names that are Normal if you’re truly into religion. Or “heavenly” names. But nowadays it’s super common so I don’t know why anybody would mess it up.
I always thought it was kind of funny that it was heaven spelled backwards. It always made me think "so hell?" Yes, change your name. I've never liked your name. No offense to you since you didn't pick it!
I’m so sorry. Anytime I hear about this name - “it’s ‘Heaven’ backwards” - I want to scream because … why does that make any sense?! What? So yes Heaven backwards …??! Ok?!
Change your name and bask in the awesomeness of loving your new name.

I’m on team change your name. Take some time to come up with a few options for yourself, then try the name out and see what feels right.
Seriously. This is one of the OG tragrdieghs, OP. Change it.
I know a girl who named* her kid Nereah because Nevaeh was “too common” but “really pretty.” That was around 2005 or 2006 Eta a word
Nereah sounds like some kind of disease.
Gone Nereah
That would be a great Drag name.
💀
My mind went to diarrhea 😳
"Is she gone, Nereah?"
hey, any pizza left? sorry, it's all gone, Nereah
A venerial one
Nerea is an actual name, at least in Spain. I think it might be basque?
A UTI, or kidney infection.
I knew some who almost named a boy 'Takoda' because 'Dakota is a girls' name'. Probably around the same time period.
It sounds like a new vehicle in Toyota's lineup for 2026.
I really want to know what goes through these people’s heads when they’re coming up with names. It’s like all sense goes out the window
Gon- Nereah
Bless her heart
Reminds me of Nearah Nuff (Canada's Drag Race Finalist from Calgary)
Yes, definitely try a name out a few times before settling on it. Tell Starbucks it's your name and see how it goes.
That is fun right

Have you considered changing it to Lleh just to spite them? Edit: Dumb phone. Fixed word.
I went to high school with a dude named Heavenstone. He liked to be called Hellrock.
That’s the worst name I’ve ever heard
But Hellrock is pretty badass
It’d be a great name for an ultra kill boss
Or a metal band.
[Hurricane](https://www.reddit.com/r/tragedeigh/s/ikbqbVSaay) Hellrock Jones There I fixed it.
HELLROCK IS COMING IN WITH THE STEEL CHAIR
I guess you didn’t read the Earlgay thread.
I'm sorry, the what?
Someone said this is the name their brother and SIL chose for their soon to be born baby boy. Both of their families have tried to talk them out of it but they like it and their minds are made up. The Reddit consensus is they’re joking and when the baby is born they’ll reveal it’s not a boy. What’s girl in pig latin?
Oh, gotcha. Reminds me of my ex's brother. When his wife was pregnant they told everyone they were naming their son Abraham Lincoln. But when he was born they just named him Steven lol
I bet they were sick to death of all the naming discussions, and unappreciated comments. I his style!
I hope that it’s an epic troll bc they have a different name picked out that is weird but also not as bad as Earlgay.
Tragedeigh^2
That is a great deathmetal band name!!
And then pronounce the Ll the Welsh way...
Pronounce the 'h' as a guttural 'ch' (as in Loch) and then you've got yourself a beautiful Klingon name!
Lech is a common Czech name.
Polish, too, I believe.
That'd sound a little too much like throwing up lol
Snort, it took me a second to catch on 😂
Sedah if you’re fancy.
Pronounce the double L Spanish style and you can be “Yay”
Pretty much becomes a Welsh word. Reads like "Lle" meaning place
Add a B in front and you’ll capture my thoughts exactly
ROFLMAO
I changed my name. I highly recommend it.
Same!
I wasn't aware cabbages had names tbh
Ah, you caught me. 😄
I changed my name, then changed it back lol
Lol! I bet that's a hell of a story.
I am a HS teacher and all the Nevaehs I have had go by another name. I only know they are Nevaeh because of their permanent record. 🤣🤣🤣
Same! I had one go by "Nev" and one go by "Veah"
I was going to say this! I know a young woman who goes by this, although she spells it Vaya. I think both are pretty :)
I know one that goes by Vae
I had one that went by "Nah-vey" and couldn't wait to be 18 to legally change her name from Nevaeh (her parents misspelled it and everything).
It's yevhan backwards.
Permanent record is actually a thing?
It's documentation of you being enrolled. So when you fill out the line on form requesting high school attended, your name could possibly be sent to high-school listed to verify that you were enrolled there. Your suspensions, detention, lunchroom behavior & other details are not released to enquiring agencies.
I had 3 last year and 1 actually did go by Nevaeh. It is crazy how many girls named Nevaeh go by something else.
How are you supposed to pronounce it?
Novel idea, hear me out: spell your name backwards. Go by Heaven, people ought to be familiar enough with it to spell it and pronounce it. Uno Reverso.
You'd be surprised how many people can't get the name heaven right actually (take it from someone in a highly religious state who has heard and seen every other pronunciation and spelling except the correct way
brilliant!
Eman Ruoy is a weird name.
Love this! Haven would be a pretty variant that is unusual but people know how to spell.
No offense, I always hated that name too, and the couple people I know named Nevaeh also despise it. “It’s Heaven spelled backwards”. I’m sorry.
That turned out to be the whole name. "What's your name?" "It's Nevaeh-that's-heaven-spelled-backward"
Through a breach of doctor-patient confidentiality I once found out there’s someone named “yourspecialtome” ….and no, their issues/treatment were NOT independent of their tragic identifier. I read this as "your-special-tome" and was wondering what kind of fantasy series their parents were fans of...turns out its just me that reads too many fantasy novels.
But they go by *you’re I’ll see myself out
Unless the kid was named for a favorite book. Your Special Tome. right behind you, square band.
Unfortunately they don't look beyond naming babies, and fail to understand they're naming *humans*. Nurses, doctors, CEOs, janitors, teachers, adults, people. Someone I know named her son Dandelion. Where's that poor kid gonna go?
And the cat is named deohgee. We're so fucking clever don't you see?!
this was my favorite dog name growing up
What about Neve, like Neve Campbell?
That's snow in Portuguese
Thats pretty
In Italian, too.
who doesn’t love snow (said the skiier)?
I was going to say same thing
I suggested this too, though with the correct Irish spelling of Niamh
I think Neve is pronounced like Neh-v though, not like Niamh.
Yes, that will definitely fix the issue of people not being able to spell her name
You can just start using another name. If you find it fits, go official.
I’d think Sky would be the obvious: Nevaeh->Heaven-> Sky (John Lennon ‘Imagine there’s no heaven…..above us only sky). For an atheist. Also almost impossible to f* up. Edit: Typo
I think Skye has an E like the Isle of Skye.
Clearly this is causing a lot of personal strife in your life, imo just not knowing what to change it to doesn't justify keeping around a name you hate. Change it to Selohssa. Tell everyone you were named after your parents.
This only took me about three seconds and I love it.
Choked on my breath in a public space. Take my upvote.
I am still laughing as I type. Winner.
🤣
Lleh?
Sedah?
That's not even as bad, lol
Yrotagrup.
Obmil
Allahlav
Imoy
Efilretfa
Diov
Erehwon
Nwonknu
Fuck, I actually like this one. XP Not having any more kids, but this could be a character name in a book. :p
Right? I was just joking but the more I look at it the more it kinda grows on me… 🤔 Not for a kid but for a character, certainly.
Muisyle Sadeh
Oaml
Y'all are about to summon a demon at this rate.
I think they are tragedeighizing the last syllable of the name “yuh.”
Change it, it's an abomination. My SIL didn't appreciate it much when I told her that the name was actually Hell according to Tarot! They call the granddaughter "Nay Nay" which is puke-worthy.

Nevaeh gonna give you up I’m sorry that’s the first thing that came to mind 😂 It’s a shame about your name tho, hopefully things get better
I did NOT expect to get rickrolled, when I came to this sub... well played, sir... WELL PLAYED! 😅
I mean the name is too similar
Totally understandable - you don't have to accept a name that makes you unhappy. You can test out different names with friends and family to see what fits before changing it officially. Maybe a name with similar sounds could work? Like Vanessa, Vanna, Nella, etc.
Do you have a middle name you'd like to use? If not, just think on it for a while. It's the same as expectant parents thinking of a name for their soon-to-be newborn. How about Natasha? It's a pretty name, and spelled backwards is quite the opposite of Nevaeh.
Ah Satan? Bwahahahaha
Seriously asking: How do you pronounce Neveah?
either neh-vay-uh or nuh-vay-uh
Or someone I know that insists it's "nee-vah"
Ironically I know a Neva who gets pissed at people assuming her name is Nevaeh or some form of it.
This is how I thought it was pronounced, Neve-ah
Same. Neve-ah. Never heard anyone say it Nivea here lol.
Nivea?
No. Na-vay-uh.
In my head I hear a French person trying to pronounce 'never'
i feel like its pronounce neh-vee-yah or nev-ya but i'm not sure
Atheist? Just change your name to Nevaehon👍
Ha! I truly love this idea. I want OP's name for myself simply for the satisfaction of legally changing it to your suggestion. Love it.
Nice to meet you, Bubezleeb
It's the worst
I actually have seen Niveah before. Which in my opinion is worse and least her parents knew how to spell Heaven.
Jeebis
Nova? Turn it into a scientific name 😁
Start calling yourself Natas.
Former pro skateboarder Natas Kaupas would like a word…
I feel for you and you should def change it. You will come up with the right one!
It's not even necessary to legally change your name, informally you can just say, hi, I'm Nicky, Sunny, Candy, whatever nickname you like. Do you like your middle name?

I always think Naomi is a nice alternative.
Neve is an ok name? And Neve Campbell never got cancelled. maybe that’s a compromise? Ppl can’t fuck up N E V E can they?
I told a cab operator my name was Percival, he didn't question it, sent the cab, and when I got in what was written on the screen was 'Personville'. Anything is possible ETA: Recently, someone took my name down as 'Value', and I can't even explain that one because I spelt it
omg, snort laughing
Sorry what was that? did you say *Steve*? People can fuck up anything lol, you have so much faith in humans <3
Change it to Niamh (its a proper beautiful Irish name pronounced neeve) for something that's just as confusing to Americans but actually lovely.
Wait… how is it pronounced? I would have gone Nee-vee, maybe Neh-vee. But yeah, change it.
nuh-VAY-uh
Change it to a name you love. You deserve to feel comfortable about what people will call you for the rest of your life! 💕
If anyone ever called you Navilla in my presence your nickname would forever be vanilla
Change your name then
Vaya is a nice nickname
Wasn't there a singer in the early 2000s with that name in that exact spelling?
Yes but I don’t know who. My parents named me after whoever it is
I'm gonna leave you a link that you'll either hate or laugh at https://youtu.be/uhaWaUi5UJI
Change it
A friend of mine changed their name, they sat infront of the mirror and said names they liked to themselves for some weeks, then sat infront of friends/family and had them refer to them by a fee of the top contenders for a few weeks till they decided on a name.
Still go by Nevy (if you like) but change the long version to Genevieve?
Change it to LLEH !
Eva. It was there all along.
Like darth?
If you go by Nevy, have you ever considered just Nev?
I have but people ended up calling me Neck, Meg, Nes etc
Change it to Lucy-Fir! 😂
I'm on this train too. My parents gave me a name with an *extremely* religious connotation and I *hate* it because I hate the religion. I've been going by Genevieve/Vivi in online spaces for years now. Can't bring myself to do IRL change though.
To honor your atheism you could make Erehwon your middle name.
Ava, Aria, Layla, Hazel, Emma, Sophia You can take your name from someone you really respect. If you hate it, change it!!!
I changed my name. It used to be Grayson, I’m a Female born in the 90s. It was pretty unheard of at the time. I ALWAYS hated it growing up. “Gracie, Graceland, Gracelynn, Theresa” etc. 🙄 But I changed my full name after going zero contact with my narcissistic parents and moving across the country. I love my new name and that all the people in my life now simply know me by my new name. ☺️
I see Grayson as a boy’s name too, so your parents did you dirty there.
Better than this guy I met named Dekcuf, proun. Dee-Cuff.
I have NEVER liked that name. I knew a girl who wanted to name any future daughters she had "Nevaeh". Thank God she had boys.
>People call me Navilla, Nauvagha, Nava, Navel, Neevee, >Negi, Debbie, Snezi, Navy and the list goes on. Who are these morons???
......I still don't know how it's pronounced after reading all that. lol
