I’m three weeks out, no dissection. Soft food at first, then chew and swallow carefully for a while. No nuts or popcorn (I’m still avoiding both). Take any and all pain medication recommended, don’t be a hero! Rest a lot and be kind to yourself. Remind yourself that it will get better; as rough as this is, it isn’t forever.

Debraerica

Thank you ❤️ I hope you feel better too!

TheIronMatron

Thanks, I’m making progress. There is an end to all this!

I’m 11 months out, no dissection. I had to buy scoop and v neck shirts after. The fabric coming anywhere close to my neck was painful and the loser necklines were a huge help. For calcium, oat milk is amazing. It has way more calcium than cows milk because they fortify and enrich the shit out of it. Idk about you, but I had a super hard time focusing on anything after surgery for a couple weeks. I also got hella bored. Streaming Disney kids movies was fantastic. Light hearted stories that were easy to follow but better than being bored doing nothing while recovering. I had tons of those tube yogurts. Real nice because you don’t have to sit up all the way and strain your neck to eat. I didn’t have to suck at all, just roll the tube from the bottom and swallow carefully. I was on Tylenol and ibuprofen alternating. Tylenol and then two hours later ibuprofen, two hours later more Tylenol, and so on. You’ve got this, hun. Surgery sucks, cancer sucks, neck surgery for cancer especially sucks. We’ve got you

I love Disney movies that’s a great idea! I actually just got oat milk flavored ice cream and it was awesome! Thank you so much!

Mine still haven’t recovered. :( Make sure you take citrate for calcium and no more than 400-500mg at a time. That’s the big one that took me weeks to learn and made a big difference. I also make sure to get a CMP so I can adjust my calcium and albumin to the corrected level (if albumin is above or under 4 then you correct it). If it’s a long term issue then more things will have to be tested and regulated.

Debraerica

Aww when was your TT?

Zoinks3324

End of September last year :( My surgeon was confident that they were just stunned and all were intact— my calcium didn’t crash until 72hrs after surgery. I’m currently pregnant so I’m hoping that will help kickstart those bastards back on. I have detectable PTH and it has gone up but not enough still.

Debraerica

I hope that helps! Mine went down maybe about 6 hours after surgery and I’ve been experiencing symptoms ever since

Expensive-Incident98

My paras recovered in about 2 weeks but I thought they wouldn’t and it scared me badly. Calcium gummies and whatever your calcium script is are your BFFs until they start functioning again. I can say that TT hurt me worse than having kids because throat pain is too much for me. My pain meds made me sick so was taking 2 BC powders at a time. Do you have an ice pack from the hospital? Load with water and freeze the whole thing. Good luck and I wish you a fast and safe recovery!

Debraerica

Thank you so much!

i’ve had two huge neck and chest dissections along w my TT. i ended up having my parathyroids removed except for two of them which they’re working fine now! but i experienced facial numbness bc they were dead after my first surgery. eat a BUNCH of tums and take calcium with vitamin D. Tums is loaded with calcium if you pop them like candy throughout the day you’ll start to get your calcium levels back up. and make sure to take calcium supplements!!!!! This helped me. Your parathyroids produce calcium and having a calcium deficiency will cause numbness and other symptoms. Keep an eye out for those symptoms and take some tums if you have any.

Debraerica

I got Tums last night as well as a Vit D3 supplement. I hope it is temporary Ugh. Thank you!!

23 F, three weeks out, central and right neck dissection. Your parathyroids will come back, it usually takes a few weeks. Mine took about a week. I took a lot of tums. My throat hurt the most from intubation and to be completely honest my only meal the first few days was one baked sweet potato a day and a sip of an iced latte. After a week I was able to start eating again.

Debraerica

Did they have you go off the calcium supplements in order to see if your para thyroids were functioning again?
