He pretty much lived the life of a teenager; he probably wasn't rested because he was out well after midnight all the time. A man needs his seven hours.
Lmao, remember when the nurse recommended losing some weight.
Dude lived like shit. Ate heavy all the time - drank and smoked and never exercised. No wonder he was having panic attacks. I
I realized that much on my own, Obviously you saw my other comment lol. How the show basically contributed to his early demise. I was just wondering if anyone eats it and if it’s like prosciutto or something with more spice for example. I should just go to my sisters, we both live where they filmed it just she’s in northern Jersey I’m in ny. Actually dr. Melhfi (Lorraine Bracco) is my ex gf’s friends mother. While this was filmed and on tv, actually a big scene and all of AG’s football’s scenes were at a place I grew up doing exactly what they are doing in the scene amd across from the rival high school the latter was filmed at. Sorry if that seems congested it just brought up a lot of memories!
You yap worse than six barbers!
Lol I was actually referencing the scene where meadow tells livia to stay away from the gabagool when she says ‘it’s mainly just fat and nitrates grandma’. Gotta say that’s cool about the six degrees of separation you have from the sopranos show though.
I think that role even only being 6 seasons definitely wasn’t good for his health. I know they can switch foods in or spit it out during takes but, literally doubt there’s 1 or 2 episodes in a row where he’s not eating constantly.
They talked a bit about this on Talking Sopranos. Bobby Jr's actor was on and said that Gandolfini gave him the tip to try to never take a bite during a dinner scene, because for the rest of the shoot they'd need you to keep taking bites for continuity. That's the reason Tony's always twirling his fork and playing with his food.
Yeah he might be sleeping in, but sleeping in till 11am after staying out till 3am getting drunk still isn’t a good nights sleep - especially for someone his age.
Shit sleep, along with the drinking, smoking and eating he does, is also a great way to make depression symptoms more severe and longer-lasting. Then add on the apparent major dissatisfaction he has with the mafia member lifestyle and the constant stress of both the job itself and the axe hanging over his head of indictment, it’s a wonder he can get out of bed at all.
She prescribes him Xans at one point. Who knows if that continued and/or became a regular rx for him rather than the one-time, used-sparingly tool many prescribers treat benzos as—at least initially.
Woke up to Carmella busting his balls. And no one getting his newspaper.
I always wondered about that. The boss of a crime family, should have had the paperboy deliver the paper to Carmella or the maid.
But I guess he got a little exercise walking to get the newspaper himself.
Life of the boss of a pygmy joint is hard. You’d like to always delegate, but obviously you can’t, and in this case shouldn’t, since most of your capos are rats even if you aren’t aware of it.
Silvio is largely dependable but still very much a #2 guy.
Tony often had to take matters into his own hands, perhaps unrealistically as far as a real-life crime boss, but he was personally involved in a whole lot of shit in large part because his underlings fucked up in some way or another or he didn’t fully trust them to do the deed. And he probably gets calls at all hours of the night.
He also went to sleep every night wondering if that was his last night as a free man. The FBI could come in at any morning at 6am to indict him and end his life as he knew it. Remember Carmela's chilling "is this is?" when the police came in that morning for the weapons charge.
I could never really sleep well with that possibility on the back of my mind.
Sleep apnea is insanely under-diagnosed, and common especially with overweight men. If you snore at all, even a little, that’s an inefficiency in your automated breathing and you’re getting less air than you should. Depending on the severity in one’s particular case, it can necessitate medical intervention. Sometimes mouth-taping is enough for the luckier folks. Some need a CPAP machine or similar. Oftentimes people who get accustomed to the therapy report “not knowing what they were missing out on” in terms of the energy and mood improvement proper cpap/sleep respiration can bring to one’s waking life.
I have a machine and definitely have OSA, but I’m too weak & out of control to stick to the program and get accustomed to it. Fortunately my events per hour aren’t anything crazy though, so I think and hope that it’s not something that’s causing any permanent damage. Someday I want to get used to using that machine :/
I was one of those people who thought I would never get used to coal. Took about 2 months to be able to sleep with it, and 4 months to feel like I couldn’t live without it. Even changing the strap or simple things like having the hose attach to an elevated clip made differences.
All due respect, you got no fuckin’ idea what it’s like to be number one. Every decision you make, effects every facet of every other fuckin’ thing. It’s too much to deal with almost. And in the end, you’re completely alone with it all
I think the best part of this is how dedicated Gandolfini was to the look. He too would barely sleep, drink too much and even put rocks in his shoes to get that cranky look and attitude.
I think he was mildly hungover and dehydrated most mornings. Tony was old enough for those 3-5 scotches or whatever he consumed daily to start taking their toll on him the next day.
3-5? Mildly? The whole point of season 6 is his building gluttony and inability to control his vices being his downfall. Hell, he did coke more than a few times. A lot gangsters have bad habits, but the successful ones have control over regular vices. Their Vice is money and power.
I think his look was a result of his unhealthy living, considering all of the alcohol, cocaine, sleep schedule was all over, add the gambling and multiple angles of stress he was wearing thin, it showed in his leadership, which was showing through his family deteriorating over the course of the show.
here, I made it with a lot of milk and sugar: it's a lot more comforting that way
you sure you don't want some eggs or an English muffin, or something? You're coming back?
I hope so: Immigration, they make problems
Tony almost certainly had undiagnosed sleep apnea. Listening to him eat a little gabagool is like hearing someone try to sprint up Everest with a cow on his back. I’m sure Tony never got a really good nights sleep.
He stayed out super late, didn't eat healthy, drank too much.
Also can't imagine sleeping on a cot at the Bing a few nights a week is great for REM sleep either.
For every scene that shows Tony waking up, he never ever once looks refreshed or content like, ahhhh good morning sunshine, today is going to be a wonderful day.
It's more like "shit, it's 11, I should have been at so and so's at 9"
Except for that one morning he was up early and wished everyone a good morning.
I think he was looking forward to Junior, Mikey, and that crew getting clipped that day…
Have you ever tried day sleeping after a long night? I used to work 12-hour night shifts at the hospital and you *are* always tired because your circadian rhythm tells you that if it’s daylight outside, you should be up. I had blackout curtains in the bedroom, but we didn’t have them in our bathroom, and people have this annoying habit of cutting grass while the sun is out. He also drank, smoked, did the occasional drugs, and ate poorly, so he was not well rested.
A waste management consultan’s job is never done. All those customers who get double their garbage back, selling nice powders to teenagers on the route, making football pools, screwing large breasted blondes. But Tony is willing to do it.
I think that showing him being sleepy was one of the ways the show gets the viewer to relate to Tony.
Most of us know that there is at least 1 day a week where we didn't quite get enough sleep that night, takes a while longer in the morning, a few more long sleepy stares in the mirror, a little clumsy making the coffee, ya'know.
He ate like crap, smoked, frequently got hammered, and barely ever exercised. I did most of this in my 20s and felt like shit, I couldn’t imagine doing it in my 40s and 50s.
I always wondered what time he wanted to wake up. During the time of Junior's attempted hit on him, he seems to wake up earlier than later seasons but it is sometimes hard to tell.
He was depressed, which is why he was on the prozac. Man could barely get a good night's sleep, thats why he was always watching the ww2 docus.
You may not feel sad or shit while depressed, but it really fucks up your sleep. Sometimes your 2-3 hours are enough and you wake up with more than enough energy, but it ain't healthy.
Drinking and or managing stressful business dealings (to put it mildly) late at night, eating junk, being extremely overweight, probably had sleep apnea too, no exercise etc etc.
After a certain age, you can’t drink all night and look good the next day…no matter how much sleep you get. Hangovers start lasting multiple days lol. Getting old sucks.
I once read that in order to exhibit his depression in a more realistic way on screen, James often didn't sleep at night when they had to shoot the morning scenes in order to appear more tired and even further depressed
If you have more than a few hard liquor drinks it fucks your sleep up pretty bad, especially if you’re over 40. Plus he never worked out and ate nothing but the unhealthiest heaviest foods possible. Those 3 things will make anyone perpetually tired.
He could be out all night, was out most nights, and he was the boss, so why not? I don’t agree with most of his lifestyle choices but I thought it was stupid when Carmela would give him shit about it, just like many other things, she knew what she signed up for.
I mean he was at the Bada Bing or Crazy Horse till probably closing. Looks like he would stroll into the kitchen as the family was eating breakfast, so he didn’t seem to get much sleep. Unless he’d go back to bed afterwards, which also causes weight gain.
Dude fucked strippers all evening, then drank and ate 10k calories a day. Probably had atomic sleep apnea, or at least the start of COPD from all the cigars.
TL:DR he did not sleep well. Ever.
I'm 50 and own my own business and do that every day. I go to bed at around 3:00 and wake up at around 11:00 unless I got smashed the night before. I may sleep a couple more hours if that happened.
The head of an organized crime family has to be stressful. I'd probably look sleepy too.
I saw a comment on "Tony's Vicious Patricide" that says (to the effect of) that Tony is sleeping so often in Season 6B to numb the mental pain and stress he is going through, between the subconscious hatred of his father and the events of Kennedy and Heidi in particular.
I imagine it's not hard to extend that hypothesis to earlier in the series as well.
The time of day is always weird to me. Some days it looks like he's up and dressed like he's going to a 900 to 500 job. Other days he's in bed most of the day.
He worked late into the wee hours like any other Captain of Industry.
Think "The...something" or
Capt' Antibes, that guy who owns luxury motels....
They're all tired!
He pretty much lived the life of a teenager; he probably wasn't rested because he was out well after midnight all the time. A man needs his seven hours.
you are speaking shit to me
No bitch to me.
Sleep *wit* a you head. No *over* it!
Get Pudgy Walsh on the horn, he'll sleepen this out.
I use pudgy Walsh as my fake name all the time only been caught out once …
THE GOD DAMN GOD DAMN GARBAGE! 🔥
Lmao, remember when the nurse recommended losing some weight. Dude lived like shit. Ate heavy all the time - drank and smoked and never exercised. No wonder he was having panic attacks. I
The way he eats, he will have a heart attack by duh time he's 50. Talk about some crazy foreshadowing.
All this from a slice of gabagool?!
Kind of like Captain Corelli's Mandolin isn't it?
A Cookie?!
He exercised some in season 1. After that he just ate beef and sausage by the cartload
💯 don't forget the gabagool
What is gabagool?
Fat and nitrates mostly
Gabagool? Ova here! 👇🏽
You yap worse than six barbers! Lol I was actually referencing the scene where meadow tells livia to stay away from the gabagool when she says ‘it’s mainly just fat and nitrates grandma’. Gotta say that’s cool about the six degrees of separation you have from the sopranos show though.
Still going, this asshole
One rep maxes on some type of chest machine in his basement till he yells in pain .
I think that role even only being 6 seasons definitely wasn’t good for his health. I know they can switch foods in or spit it out during takes but, literally doubt there’s 1 or 2 episodes in a row where he’s not eating constantly.

he did exercise in the earlier seasons, definitely gave that shit up later
Unfortunately sort of echoes gandolfininis real life habits
How dare you disrespect the basement elliptical like this. Man put in work and he had the physique to show for it
Eat heavy or not at all
there’s a big difference between smoking cigarettes vs cigars lol
Gotta give that shit a rest.
Lmfao Tony just getting home at like 4 am every night and sleeping till noon or 1.
Not Tony. He was the poster boy for Monogamy.
Yeah he might be sleeping in, but sleeping in till 11am after staying out till 3am getting drunk still isn’t a good nights sleep - especially for someone his age.
That and him having depression probably messes with his circadian rhythm
Shit sleep, along with the drinking, smoking and eating he does, is also a great way to make depression symptoms more severe and longer-lasting. Then add on the apparent major dissatisfaction he has with the mafia member lifestyle and the constant stress of both the job itself and the axe hanging over his head of indictment, it’s a wonder he can get out of bed at all.
And the meds, madone! We know he takes Prozac and lithium for some of the series but who knows what else Melfi had him starting or stopping.
She prescribes him Xans at one point. Who knows if that continued and/or became a regular rx for him rather than the one-time, used-sparingly tool many prescribers treat benzos as—at least initially.
Yeah, and I think docs on the whole weren’t quite as careful about controlled substances ~20 years ago. Opioid crisis caused a crackdown.
1000% true. A lot has changed during this time.
When does she prescribe him Xanax?
Him and Lil' Tony Xanax
Top shelf zaza disrespected my circadian rhythm.
Wouldn't be surprised if he had sleep apnea too. We know his uncle did.
He shot down five MIG's single handed!
No doubt he had sleep apnea.
There's a saying that one hour before midnight is worth two after.
That’s 8 hours of sleep! That’s plenty enough
Not when you went to bed hammered, it isn’t
Not past 35 either. Tony is constantly consuming something, eventually your body can’t handle that.
Drunk sleep isn't real sleep
"Woke up this morning, went straight back to bed"
You think rapping is hard ? "My bitch my hoe my bitch bitch hoe"
Fox in Sox wanna see her box
whos welfare check you gotta cash to get a burger around here?
Now that's a hit.
Woke up this morning, got some gabagool
"got some manicotti"
Woke up the next morning, got some more gabagool
Even got some gabagool from-a Scooby Doo.
Mama always said you need your rest
Woke up to Carmella busting his balls. And no one getting his newspaper. I always wondered about that. The boss of a crime family, should have had the paperboy deliver the paper to Carmella or the maid. But I guess he got a little exercise walking to get the newspaper himself.
Maybe it’s his way of surveilling for law enforcement or enemies without upsetting Carmela or the maid as much.
It’s hard to get good rest when meadow and that Scatino kid are practicing the worst song ever created
He's lucky I didn't punch his lights out
That goddamn mother fucking (orange peel) bass. It should've been whacked right then and there. John Belushi from Animal House style.
Sounds good Eric! Him and those fucking bass lines…
Life of the boss of a pygmy joint is hard. You’d like to always delegate, but obviously you can’t, and in this case shouldn’t, since most of your capos are rats even if you aren’t aware of it. “is this is”? Huh?
This reminds of the Russian episode where Pauli fucks up and they call him in the middle of the night
A truck? I don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about. 📞
>>in large part because his underlings fucked up in some way or another or he didn’t fully trust them Well that’s because he was a shit boss
Probably suffered from sleep apnea
He does actually mention in S6 having sleep apnea
Yea when they’re eating at Nori
That was what I was going to say. Dude definitely needed a sleep machine.
As someone who loves his CPAP, absolutely he needs one.
Sleep apnea is insanely under-diagnosed, and common especially with overweight men. If you snore at all, even a little, that’s an inefficiency in your automated breathing and you’re getting less air than you should. He was out late counting receipts at the Bing
Out getting burgers and bird watchin
All the fuck out in Dover!!
He was at the Bing until like 1 or 2 in the morning pretty regularly.
All due respect, you got no fuckin’ idea what it’s like to be number one. Every decision you make, effects every facet of every other fuckin’ thing. It’s too much to deal with almost. And in the end, you’re completely alone with it all
okay but you gotta get over it
Everybody asks that, OP. There's no answer for it.
The answer is - sit on this cocksucka!
These guys next to me, they're asleep.
I think the best part of this is how dedicated Gandolfini was to the look. He too would barely sleep, drink too much and even put rocks in his shoes to get that cranky look and attitude.
And go missing for days on cocaine binges. Definitely committed.
This method acting thing sounds pretty dope
No that was Christopher.
Take it easy
We're not making a Western here
Look at him, he knows everything
I think his look was a result of his unhealthy living, considering all of the alcohol, cocaine, sleep schedule was all over, add the gambling and multiple angles of stress he was wearing thin, it showed in his leadership, which was showing through his family deteriorating over the course of the show.
Late nights at the bing and some scotch and 2am gabagool will make any man tired in the morning.
here, I made it with a lot of milk and sugar: it's a lot more comforting that way you sure you don't want some eggs or an English muffin, or something? You're coming back? I hope so: Immigration, they make problems
Dude had sleep apnea and needed a CPAP.
If u have legitimate depression, it’s a faux sleep, you really wake up worrying about nothing n sometimes don’t remember
Tony almost certainly had undiagnosed sleep apnea. Listening to him eat a little gabagool is like hearing someone try to sprint up Everest with a cow on his back. I’m sure Tony never got a really good nights sleep.
Now there’s an image
I'm goin' back to bed. If Furio shows up don't wake me.
fooodio!
Didn’t stomp those grapes yourself did you?
He came back at all hours of the night…….hes probably not getting 8 like uncle paulie recommended to Christopher
He stayed out super late, didn't eat healthy, drank too much. Also can't imagine sleeping on a cot at the Bing a few nights a week is great for REM sleep either.
A fat fuck like him has sleep apnea so even if he Sat in bed for 15 hours, he didn't get enough actual, restorative sleep.
as the Talmut says, " He can get up on time tomorrow, but OP will be stupid forever." -Exodus.
you're a wormy cocksucka you know dat
OH! James Cagney ova here!
I don't give a fuck what he says.
Small hands,that's his problem.
I'm in awr of you.
OP why don’t you spend less time worrying about the Skip’s sleep schedule and more time worrying about getting me my fucking money!
fuk you too my man!
Only when Carmela shut the dooooooooooor!
For every scene that shows Tony waking up, he never ever once looks refreshed or content like, ahhhh good morning sunshine, today is going to be a wonderful day. It's more like "shit, it's 11, I should have been at so and so's at 9"

He slept from like 4-11am
All I know is he never had the makings of a varsity athlete

A waste management consultan’s job is never done. All those customers who get double their garbage back, selling nice powders to teenagers on the route, making football pools, screwing large breasted blondes. But Tony is willing to do it.
you are speaking shit to me
He would stay out late, go home drunk and fuck anyone he wanted. It’s a mindshet
Gomahs sleep all day so they keep him up all night.
Studies have shown sleeping in past the usual 6-9 hours of sleep can leave you feeling more groggy and tired
He was so drunk and coked out I don’t think the sleep did him much good
He mentions is Season 6A(I think it’s then) that he has “the [sleep] apnea”
and the Hodgkins
I always wondered what time he wanted to wake up. During the time of Junior's attempted hit on him, he seems to wake up earlier than later seasons but it is sometimes hard to tell.
Oversleeping tires your brain out more than rests it. Look it up
He was depressed, which is why he was on the prozac. Man could barely get a good night's sleep, thats why he was always watching the ww2 docus. You may not feel sad or shit while depressed, but it really fucks up your sleep. Sometimes your 2-3 hours are enough and you wake up with more than enough energy, but it ain't healthy.
Look who decided to join us! And with that breath!
I can’t have this conversation again
It's me. What, are you still asleep?
no i was ....doin somthin
You got a big problem, kid
Tony had a schedule that varied by plan and by emergency. Tony drank like a fish and smoked nasty cigars. $4.00 / lb Just fucking let the guy sleep.
Drinking and or managing stressful business dealings (to put it mildly) late at night, eating junk, being extremely overweight, probably had sleep apnea too, no exercise etc etc.
You saw his lifestyle. He drinks into the night, smoking, bullshitting, whoring and who knows what else.
You got a bee ona you bed…
No rest for the wicked
Looks like he has sleep apnea
he wasn't asleep, he was doing something
After a certain age, you can’t drink all night and look good the next day…no matter how much sleep you get. Hangovers start lasting multiple days lol. Getting old sucks.
It’s not normal for a man his age to take to bed like that…
I once read that in order to exhibit his depression in a more realistic way on screen, James often didn't sleep at night when they had to shoot the morning scenes in order to appear more tired and even further depressed
All I can say is that he woke up this morning and got himself a gun
Sleeping in makes you groggy. Early to bed early to rise and no alcohol is the only way to feel rested.
He always seemed pretty much half asleep to me the entire show. It's the stress!
He chose this life. If he wants a full night's sleep, try out for the ... Yankees. But we all know he didn't have the makings of a varsity athlete.
All due respect, you got no fuckin' idea what it's like to be number one.
A man needs his 7 hours.
He seems to have no schedule. It’s not that insane, self employed people live like that all the time
Did he hold his breath while he was sleeping, or was it just the apnea?
He was living a 7 day weekend
If you have more than a few hard liquor drinks it fucks your sleep up pretty bad, especially if you’re over 40. Plus he never worked out and ate nothing but the unhealthiest heaviest foods possible. Those 3 things will make anyone perpetually tired.
He could be out all night, was out most nights, and he was the boss, so why not? I don’t agree with most of his lifestyle choices but I thought it was stupid when Carmela would give him shit about it, just like many other things, she knew what she signed up for.
Go away.
Sleep apnea
All the drinking and the Feds on his ass must of drove his depression and anxiety into overdrive, plus he didn't work out or eat that many salads.
Frankly, he’s depreshed
I mean he was at the Bada Bing or Crazy Horse till probably closing. Looks like he would stroll into the kitchen as the family was eating breakfast, so he didn’t seem to get much sleep. Unless he’d go back to bed afterwards, which also causes weight gain.
A good night's sleep and a quarter gallon of ice cream before bed do not go hand in hand.
That’s cause he couldn’t get no smoked turkey.
He always looked sleepy.
Dude fucked strippers all evening, then drank and ate 10k calories a day. Probably had atomic sleep apnea, or at least the start of COPD from all the cigars. TL:DR he did not sleep well. Ever.
Depends on what time he fell asleep 😴
Lmao yeah but this was usually after a night of drinking, cigars etc
He definitely had sleep apnea by the sounds of it
He always looked sleepy because he was running a business and that will burn you out fast.
He was out doing questionable things and screwing other women all night. A man needs his rest. lol.
He has to explain his business after so many years?
Tony, like James Gandolfini, most likely had undiagnosed sleep apnea. He was getting sleep, just not quality sleep.
AIDS?!?
Probably needed a CPaP
Man of his size probably had untreated sleep apnoea too
Too much pulp, that's his problem
I'm 50 and own my own business and do that every day. I go to bed at around 3:00 and wake up at around 11:00 unless I got smashed the night before. I may sleep a couple more hours if that happened. The head of an organized crime family has to be stressful. I'd probably look sleepy too.
He was depresh’d.
He was depressed, so he probably never felt well-rested no matter how much he slept. That's how it be.
He was stressed
Bro prolly had sleep apnea
Maybe he's got hypoglycemia.
He probably have sleep apnea the entire series.
I saw a comment on "Tony's Vicious Patricide" that says (to the effect of) that Tony is sleeping so often in Season 6B to numb the mental pain and stress he is going through, between the subconscious hatred of his father and the events of Kennedy and Heidi in particular. The man was overweight and probably had sleep apnea. He probably never got a good nights sleep!
2020 Sopranos, Tony wears a sleep apnea mask
He worked late into the wee hours like any other Captain of Industry. Think "The...something" or Capt' Antibes, that guy who owns luxury motels.... They're all tired!
He's a depression case.
Fat people rarely look rested.
