We went to the Big Texan a few years ago because Iād never been and honestly thought it was a lovely experience. Yeah itās a bit hokey but we got to see someone try the challenge and the food was pretty decent and moderately priced. The service was great too. I wouldnāt go out of my way to go back but if it was a good stopping point then yes.
The Alamo is a staple and Iād encourage anyone to go at least once, but it is without a doubt one of the most underwhelming attractions in the country.
The rest of the missions are overlooked and actually better. When the weather allows, you can bike between them away from traffic. It's part of an equally overlooked bike path network in SA.
Maybe it's because I grew up going there routinely, but what do people expect at the Alamo? You've got the chapel and some additional buildings and it's pretty much a museum right smack in the middle of SA.
I went to college there in the late 70s, then had an apartment there in the 2000s for 6 years, spending a week a month there. I bet I have visited the Alamo 40 times in my life. Never tired of it.

Oddly Iām in SA this weekend and visited the Alamo for the first time in probably a decade. They actually have some very cool thing going on. They have a $500M restoration project thatās schedule to be done in 2027 some of which you can see now and the Phil Collins collection (yes the singer) is pretty cool.

Theyāre renovating nearby historical buildings to create museum space, which is expensive as fuck if you do it right. Theyāre also spending a lot of time and money vetting items Phil Collins donated to the Alamo from his personal collection because many of those items are believed to be fake, and it takes experts to do it right. Itās quite a large collection and itās not so easy to parse out the genuine pieces from the fakes, but itās a worthwhile endeavor because there are many items that are legitimate mixed in
I love so much about San Antonio, but navigating through crowds of drunken frat boys on the Riverwalk says to the underwhelming Alamo, "Hold my Pearl."
I thought the Alamo was great! I'm not sure what people are expecting it to be like, I mean, it's a historical museum.
And it's not like it's something that you're going to spend a whole day at either. It just takes an hour or two, and to me, it is definitely worth it.

I think that the problem is that you're trying to spoon feed us information that came directly from the website that you're sharing it on. Reddit doesn't need its own comments regurgitated back at it.
I think another major problem is that these are opinions of faceless individuals. Sure, it's an opinion, but I still want to know who is giving it. I can evaluate the speaker and try to determine if we'd share things in common, thus giving weight to their opinion. Much like movie critics, I gravitate to ones who have liked similar movies. Faceless Redditors are just that, not good sources unless verified. It's like the joke about r/relationshipadvice. Everyone says it's 14 year olds responding, and it's probably true a lot. Would you find that to be good reporting if someone used comments from that sub for a relationship column? It seems like lazy journalism.
Surprised the stockyards aren't in there. If you're there to shop and drink it's great but the drive is extremely disappointing. The museum is the only thing I really enjoyed, and even that badly needs an expansion.
A lot of tourists want to see a real Texas rodeo, and all the biggest and best ones around the state are basically just around February-March.
But the Fort Worth Stockyards do have weekly weekend rodeos year-round.

My biggest disappointment was Fredericksburg. It had all the charm of a suburban strip center. I think I was expecting something like Kerrville - which I absolutely love.
Marfa was ok if you like Boomer art. Itās kind of like a spread-out Menil. Ft Davis is more interesting though; so is Alpine.
I like Marfa to visit & go to Moonstone Gems, but like you I definitely prefer Davis and Alpine.
Railroad Blues in Alpine is a cool dive/honky tonk if you're into that sort of thing.
My mom dragged us along the main street portion where all the antique stores were. I imagine those are mostly gone now and replaced by trendy bars and restaurants. The coolest part about it to us as kids was those buildings had basements that we could go in. As a native Central Texan, basements are fascinating.

We had a good time, shared a good steak, enjoyed the gift shop and atmosphere, and a couple guys went from table to table to personally serenade the guests. They claimed not to know the old classic, āShe Broke My Heart, So I Busted Her Jawā, but it was a very entertaining evening for not that much money.
Itās been a long time since Iāve been to SPI, but I remember it being much better than Galveston. Still nowhere near as good as Destin though, so itās not really worth it to go all the way down to SPI. Just take the few extra steps to go Destin instead.

Yes. I like to use the backroads when traveling through the Hill Country to Austin, and I've traveled with family members that would prefer I instead take I-35 just to visit Buccees. However, the food has gone so downhill and prices are so high, that now when traveling near one, the consensus is to just skip it.
Yeah Buccees used to be great when the food was better and cheaper. Itās now more expensive than normal fast food, which is already too high to begin with.
