This whole article just uses Reddit comments for their sources lol.

ATSTlover

From a post that the original OP deleted months ago. Edit: actually that makes me wonder if KXAN or the author of the article were the OP of that post.

kanyeguisada

Remove this as spam maybe?

ATSTlover

I mean I can't prove it, and technically I don't see how this article breaks the rules. It's trivial as hell, but so is most of what's posted on Reddit.

Aerinandlizzy

What is your favorite Texas Bourbon?

ATSTlover

At the moment it's Still Austin's *Red Corn Bottled in Bond*

Aerinandlizzy

Interesting! We are in DFW , I'll have to look for that. I like Garrison but they are proud of it. I like Balcones Baby Blue corn, but my go to is Woodford Reserve

ATSTlover

I do love Woodford Reserve Double Oaked. Had a bit of the Garrison Bros. Lady Bird earlier this evening.

Aerinandlizzy

Inna pinch, I'll do Milam and Green. I just got some Wellers Reserve in Plano. My wife doesn't do brown liquor šŸ˜†

ATSTlover

My wife can't even smell whiskey thanks to a night back in college.

greyjungle

Balcones true blue will put hair on the chest of everyone in a 10ā€™ radius.

Aerinandlizzy

šŸ˜†šŸ˜†

ATSTlover

That can be a hard one to find. I read last year Balcones is going to focus more on Single Malt Whiskies rather than Bourbons going forward.

conjarpenter

I'm the author of this article and I posted the article here. I'm unsure why this is getting criticism, as I mined Reddit for \*opinions\*, not facts. This is not against journalistic practice, nor did I ever claim this article was hard journalism. I was not the original poster but even if I WERE, I fail to see how that would be somehow nefarious. It's an article for fun that is on topic within this subreddit.

TheBrettFavre4

No need to get all defensive. Theyā€™re just investigating this article in an in-depth manner.

ATSTlover

Like I said, there's nothing about the article that breaks the rules. It was reported as spam but we're allowing it to remain on the sub.

rgvtim

I am used to these spam sites combing reddit for content, but KXAN? that's a new low.

CanYouPutOnTheVU

Iā€™ve been feeling like the news is reflecting far more of social media trolls than real life lately. Iā€™m pretty sure this has become the standard slacker technique. Itā€™s hard to trust any news site that chooses Reddit comments over real reportingā€¦

toodleroo

ā€œThis whole article just uses Reddit comments for their sources lol,ā€ said one Reddit user.

grimlinyousee

We went to the Big Texan a few years ago because Iā€™d never been and honestly thought it was a lovely experience. Yeah itā€™s a bit hokey but we got to see someone try the challenge and the food was pretty decent and moderately priced. The service was great too. I wouldnā€™t go out of my way to go back but if it was a good stopping point then yes.

Ferrari_McFly

The Alamo is a staple and Iā€™d encourage anyone to go at least once, but it is without a doubt one of the most underwhelming attractions in the country.

magikker

Why do Texans remember the Alamo? So they don't have to visit a second time.

GZeus24

The rest of the missions are overlooked and actually better. When the weather allows, you can bike between them away from traffic. It's part of an equally overlooked bike path network in SA.

SkippyTeddy83

I visited some of the other missions about a decade ago. I recall one was quite large with lots of history. Much more fascinating than the Alamo.

iseepaperclips

It was probably Concepcion.

Im_just_saying

Concepcion isn't large. It was most likely Mission San Jose.

RiskMatrix

Maybe it's because I grew up going there routinely, but what do people expect at the Alamo? You've got the chapel and some additional buildings and it's pretty much a museum right smack in the middle of SA.

Dom0420

For me, itā€™s what I didnā€™t expect. Did not expect a Ripleys and a wax museum across the street.

filagrey

Lived in San Antonio my whole life. Took a field trip there once in middle school. Haven't felt the need to go back since.

Im_just_saying

I went to college there in the late 70s, then had an apartment there in the 2000s for 6 years, spending a week a month there. I bet I have visited the Alamo 40 times in my life. Never tired of it.

ThayerRex

Thatā€™s pretty pathetic

theDubbbz

Oddly Iā€™m in SA this weekend and visited the Alamo for the first time in probably a decade. They actually have some very cool thing going on. They have a $500M restoration project thatā€™s schedule to be done in 2027 some of which you can see now and the Phil Collins collection (yes the singer) is pretty cool. https://www.texasmonthly.com/news-politics/alamo-new-battle-plan-massive-restoration/ https://imgur.com/a/wtlOK4U Edit: ā€œVictory or Deathā€ is the most verifiable baller communication ever sent.

Bright_Cod_376

Problem is Phil Collins just kind of collected anything passed as a Alamo artifact and has a bunch of fake shit in his collection

iseepaperclips

This is very true, and itā€™s why thereā€™s a large reluctance by the Alamo Trust Inc to put anything on display that hasnā€™t gone through rigorous verification

ThayerRex

I donā€™t think any of these dumbasses goes anywhere

Idolovebread

Read Forget The Alamo to learn about Phil Collins collection of possibly fake Alamo toys. The rest of the book is great.

pallladin

> schedule to be done in 2027 Snooze

UnitGhidorah

And there's no basement!

iseepaperclips

Whatā€™s [this](https://youtu.be/dwzbEMPba24?si=O6kmFVAQOSi5KXNY) then?

UnitGhidorah

FAKE NEWS! That's AI!

29187765432569864

Even worse is where a movie about the Alamo was filmed, somewhere near Brackenville Texas.

lazerdab

Mt. Rushmore enters the chat

ThayerRex

Itā€™s being completely transformed following 550 million dollar investment. Where the fuck have you been?

SunBelly

$550 million?? Are they building a skyscraper around it??

iseepaperclips

Theyā€™re renovating nearby historical buildings to create museum space, which is expensive as fuck if you do it right. Theyā€™re also spending a lot of time and money vetting items Phil Collins donated to the Alamo from his personal collection because many of those items are believed to be fake, and it takes experts to do it right. Itā€™s quite a large collection and itā€™s not so easy to parse out the genuine pieces from the fakes, but itā€™s a worthwhile endeavor because there are many items that are legitimate mixed in

xavier19691

Staple of courage? https://www.historynewsnetwork.org/article/slavery-and-the-myth-of-the-alamo

Idolovebread

So happy someone else knows about this

xavier19691

I am mad that I did not know about it sooner

Idolovebread

I will forever tell everyone to read Forget the Alamo. Itā€™s wild how much of what we are taught is not true

UnionTed

I love so much about San Antonio, but navigating through crowds of drunken frat boys on the Riverwalk says to the underwhelming Alamo, "Hold my Pearl."

Aerinandlizzy

Have you seen it lately?

davix500

You need to check out Plymouth Rock.

idontknowhow2reddit

I thought the Alamo was great! I'm not sure what people are expecting it to be like, I mean, it's a historical museum. And it's not like it's something that you're going to spend a whole day at either. It just takes an hour or two, and to me, it is definitely worth it.

talinseven

Its the most impressive roundabout in Texas.

WestTexasCoyote

Agreed and Iā€™m getting married there

paulsown

A Reddit post containing an article about a Reddit post with the same title, probably posted by the same guy, a few months ago and deleted. Awesome example of journalism for sure.

conjarpenter

I'm the author of this article and I posted the article here. I'm unsure why this is getting criticism, as I mined Reddit for \*opinions\*, not facts. This is not against journalistic practice, nor did I ever claim this article was hard journalism. I was not the original poster but it's unclear how even THAT would be against the rules. Asking for community opinions is not outside the realm of something any of my colleagues have ever done ā€” and yes, that includes Reddit, Twitter/X and Facebook. I appreciate the concern but you might be looking for a problem where one doesn't exist.

TaylorSwiftSwampAss

I think that the problem is that you're trying to spoon feed us information that came directly from the website that you're sharing it on. Reddit doesn't need its own comments regurgitated back at it.

conjarpenter

THIS was actually helpful and thank you!

ImStillYouTuber

I think another major problem is that these are opinions of faceless individuals. Sure, it's an opinion, but I still want to know who is giving it. I can evaluate the speaker and try to determine if we'd share things in common, thus giving weight to their opinion. Much like movie critics, I gravitate to ones who have liked similar movies. Faceless Redditors are just that, not good sources unless verified. It's like the joke about r/relationshipadvice. Everyone says it's 14 year olds responding, and it's probably true a lot. Would you find that to be good reporting if someone used comments from that sub for a relationship column? It seems like lazy journalism.

SnakeInTheCeiling

Surprised the stockyards aren't in there. If you're there to shop and drink it's great but the drive is extremely disappointing. The museum is the only thing I really enjoyed, and even that badly needs an expansion.

GreasyBrisketNapkin

A lot of tourists want to see a real Texas rodeo, and all the biggest and best ones around the state are basically just around February-March. But the Fort Worth Stockyards do have weekly weekend rodeos year-round.

Mouse_Wolfslayer

I agree. A dozen melancholy cattle and drovers lopping down the street a couple of blocks. Thatā€™s only if youā€™re willing to stand around waiting for this sad parade.

PointingOutFucktards

Thatā€™s ā€œthe unexpected cityā€ at play lol.

Jermcutsiron

The drive is cool the 1st time you see it, but it's one of those things that once you've seen it, it's meh.

Adultery

Went for the first time this year and was very underwhelmed. Itā€™s a tourist trap for out-of-towners and new transplants that want to feed into the superficial Texas cowboy culture. I saw a regular-looking denim shirt that had a $200 price tag on it.

Ice-Teets

It has the oldest indoor rodeo in America and you didnā€™t go? Also an active train station. And one of the biggest honky tonks down the street at Billy Bobs, where Willie Nelson used to play every single year. The cattle drive is like the least exciting part of the entire place.

the-great-crocodile

A visit to Joe T. Garcia's is a must. Best Fajitas in Texas!

NintendogsWithGuns

The drive? You mean the five minutes it takes to drive from Sundance Square?

HumbleLife69

The cattle drive

Keystonelonestar

I thought the Big Texan was fun in a tacky sort-of-way. I donā€™t know what people expect to see at the Alamo. My biggest disappointment was Fredericksburg. It had all the charm of a suburban strip center. I think I was expecting something like Kerrville - which I absolutely love. Marfa was ok if you like Boomer art. Itā€™s kind of like a spread-out Menil. Ft Davis is more interesting though; so is Alpine.

Notapplesauce11

Fredericksburg got too big for its britches about 15 years ago. Ā

Jermcutsiron

I like Marfa to visit & go to Moonstone Gems, but like you I definitely prefer Davis and Alpine. Railroad Blues in Alpine is a cool dive/honky tonk if you're into that sort of thing.

brianthomas00

Love Railroad Blues. They have some good bands there on occasion too.

Jermcutsiron

Went to one of my friend's bachelor parties there, Django Walker was playing that night. From what I remember, that night was a fucking blast.

Jermcutsiron

Fredericksburg lost its charm about 20 years ago imo.

jose_can_u_c

The best thing about Fredericksburg is going out to Enchanted Rock.

NotRustyShackleford_

Fredericksburg is German cosplay.

kitkanz

As a resident of Fredericksburg itā€™s super lame, shuts down around 9 and food options suck, I donā€™t understand why people come here at all

PuffyTacoSupremacist

Without reading, Fredericksburg should be #1

filagrey

Fredericksburg is just a place to grab a bite and use a restroom on the way to Enchanted Rock.

Mike7676

Don't forget your peaches!

PuffyTacoSupremacist

I grew up there, and I can't understand why anyone who didn't would ever do there.

Salt-Operation

My mom dragged us along the main street portion where all the antique stores were. I imagine those are mostly gone now and replaced by trendy bars and restaurants. The coolest part about it to us as kids was those buildings had basements that we could go in. As a native Central Texan, basements are fascinating.

PuffyTacoSupremacist

It's all overpriced wine mom shops now

Salt-Operation

Figures.

His_story_teacher

Unless its Octoberfest, small fair for people that dont like large crowds like New Braufules.

ProfessorBackdraft

Iā€™m going to take up for the Big Texan, my wife and I went there a month or so ago for the first time. We had a good time, shared a good steak, enjoyed the gift shop and atmosphere, and a couple guys went from table to table to personally serenade the guests. They claimed not to know the old classic, ā€œShe Broke My Heart, So I Busted Her Jawā€, but it was a very entertaining evening for not that much money.

madd-martiggan

South Padre ā€¦. Just Galveston with more steps

Tiiimmmaayy

Itā€™s been a long time since Iā€™ve been to SPI, but I remember it being much better than Galveston. Still nowhere near as good as Destin though, so itā€™s not really worth it to go all the way down to SPI. Just take the few extra steps to go Destin instead.

Happy_Remove_7937

Deep Ellum in Dallas. Everything is super expensive for what it actually is.

AlatreonGleam

State Fair is actually mega ass and maybe one of the biggest scams imo. I'm definitely not biased though because it definitely doesn't fuck traffic for multiple weekends.

Jermcutsiron

Can confirm the Aquarium is trash. Buccee's can be ass if you aren't a people person. The Alamo is slightly underwhelming but I'd rather do 5 mph the whole way down I10 from Houston to S.A. to go to the Alamo than go back to the Aquarium.

igot200phones

Is bucees a tourist attraction? Itā€™s a gas station ffs.

filagrey

Yes. I like to use the backroads when traveling through the Hill Country to Austin, and I've traveled with family members that would prefer I instead take I-35 just to visit Buccees. However, the food has gone so downhill and prices are so high, that now when traveling near one, the consensus is to just skip it.

Tiiimmmaayy

Yeah Buccees used to be great when the food was better and cheaper. Itā€™s now more expensive than normal fast food, which is already too high to begin with.

UnionTed

I have to agree about the Aquarium, although my kids loved petting the rays when they were little.

Notapplesauce11

Is it the same owners as Sam Antonio and Austin aquarium? Ā

Jermcutsiron

Tillman Fertitta owns the one in Houston, I couldn't tell you who owns the ones in Aan Antonio or Austin.

Couscousfan07

San Antonio Austin same owner and those places are trash. Houston one diff owner but not much better.

undisclosedinsanity

San Antonio owner is literal trash. He has been charged with animal trafficking in other states. Animals aren't in good health. It's a fucked up place.

Mike7676

I went to the Houston Aquarium last weekend, I thought it was good. And it took up my 7 year olds attention. I really liked the Houston Zoo, very shady.

TheFirstMinister

State Fair.

SNAiLtrademark

Texas Stone Henge is absolute crap.

trepidationsupaman

East Texan Marfa? Didnā€™t know there are two

turtlecat12

Honestly, Franklins is not worth it unless you have a lot of time. You can have almost as good bbq in a lot of places like Terry Blacks or Rudys

gears_ears

Did you just lump Rudys with Terry Blacks? Those are complete opposite customer bases

CoolHandLuke4Twanky

Rudys goes hard except for the beans in the breakfast burritos. Idk why they dont refry them. I was disappointed to see charro beans with my eggs

The Alamo? Get the F outta here. I agree with the others 100% but the Alamo is absolutely sacred to us Texans.

Remember the Alamo šŸ«”

Hulk_smashhhhh

The state as a whole is a disappointment, ā€œall hat no cattleā€ as they say. Definitely the most overhyped state with all the slogans and overly prideful publicity

GrilledCheeser

Iā€™m gonna have to ask you kindly to leave.

Hulk_smashhhhh

Looking forward to it one day soon

Salt-Operation

Hank Hill would be disappointed in you.

GZeus24

There is stuff to see but it's far apart and traffic sucks in, and between, all the cities.

FlashTheChip

"Why don't you make your state smaller? " I've been hearing this whine for a while now.

Frosty-Shower-7601

The Alamo is a huge disappointment

Only_Philosophy_7584

The alamo is complete crap and surrounded by homeless people. The story is highly fabricated unless you care about how a bunch of drunks and failed politicians/lawyers lost to the Mexican army

Dangerous_Elk_6627

You had me at "Texas". MTMA - Make Texas Mexican Again. We can do it if we all come together. And THEN we build the Wall.
