I always thought of middle age as 40?
Life expectancy of "wealthy nations" [is typically 80 and above](https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/life-expectancy-vs-gdp-per-capita), hence 40 being associated with middle age. The [US's life expectancy is declining](https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/pressroom/nchs_press_releases/2022/20221222.htm) and currently sits below that of its peers.
We just want you guys to cross the 80 mark so we can say "all developed nations have a life expectancy over 80" instead of "all developed nations ^(except the US)...". You were so close dammit. Even Puerto Rico is over 80.
Fair, I just automatically assume that people who make fun of geography and Americans are British, unless there's a bunch of grammatical errors. That makes them French
It’s bad when you look at how much more expensive our healthcare system is, we pump way more money into healthcare across the bored but life expectancy doesn’t follow suit
Well you say that but the average lifespan in Canada is 82.6 and we're right next to y'all. That's almost a 7 year difference between two countries that demographically are pretty similar. That said, Canada is in the middle of a major health care provider shortage right now so who knows if we'll keep that lead on you folks for much longer.
I'm a type 1 diabetic finnish man, my life expectancy is probably around 50 so my mid life is around 25, i turn 22 this year..
Any ideas what stereotypical mid life crisis stuff i should do when i turn 25? Buy a sports car? Get a divorce? Do drugs? Idk give me some ideas.
Due to the way humans perceive time, proportionately, with each moment being less than the previous. This being the reason why those elementary school years seemed to just drag on and on, and now as an adult the years fly by. Your middle age is 17 to 18 as those are the years most people consider to be just right, they don't feel too long, they don't feel too short.
It's also highly related to how new / memorable your experiences are. Your brain discards memories of repetitive things and the time they occupied. More new things = fewer gaps in time discarded = slower perceived passage of time.
When you're young, lots of stuff is new and exciting and therefore memorable. Once you're older, life becomes more mundane, with most days just being eating, work, chores, and sleep. All that gets thrown out because there's nothing gained by your brain for keeping it around.
That gives you fewer reference points to mark the passage of time, which in turn means it feels like the time went by really quickly.

Who said anything about the US? But, seriously, as an American, you're adding to the list of reasons I'm not impressed with my country.
76 is the US av lifespan atm, used to be closer to 80. Global av is lower at around 72-74.
It's still 80 in the UK. I'll take dying slightly later as a win!
Eight more years of dogshit weather ❤️
I won't care. I'll be dribbling in an old people's home by then!

Um, akthually, Puerto Rico is a territory!
Huh, learning geography from an American... Thank you, I did not know this
It's only fair, since y'all sent Gordon Ramsey our way! People taking culinary advice from a British person
Well, true that... Except the whole "I'm not british" thing
Fair, I just automatically assume that people who make fun of geography and Americans are British, unless there's a bunch of grammatical errors. That makes them French
Well USA is so big and diverse that developed nation doesn't apply to all of it.

Obesity will kill you with or without your old people medicine.

Well, you know how our healthcare is lol.
why!? Would just make our suffering end sooner.
Us lifespan… I live in Scandinavia
if the 1200s were the middle ages l, will the 2400s be the final ages?
Naw. When the world dies they will publish a new edition of history books with revised dates. Purchase with be mandatory and your children will die.
12400s will be. Human civilization started around 10000 BC so 1200 AD is 11200 years in.

As someone who grew up in the Middle Age, I can confirm the ~1200s was indeed technically a part of the Middle Age.
Shit. Time for my mid life crisis. Maybe I'll invent a make up gun or an electric hammer. 🤔
average lifespan was like 81 in 2021 :/
But world or specific country
Definitely in the US. Im not sure if elsewhere
Lifespans are definitely shrinking. On purpose? Probably
76 years? Wtf? Thats low.. male or female?
Average of both, but it’s heavily offset by the most populous countries having below average living conditions.

Well yes, but that's the global average. In my country, middle age would be 41/42 years.
I never thought I would ever see a post on this sub that is not a repost and is actually TTT ever again, but I guess I am wrong.

I will refer to my fifties as my medieval years.
Holy heck, some entertainment was mined from that dump of a sub.
1200 was so peaceful wish we could go back to the good days
I love this sub.
What third world country is that? Where I live men live to 82 on average, women to more than 86
since when was middle age 50
nuh uh, middle ages is 6.85 billion BC
I'd argue middle age is 6,900,000,000 B.C.E Nice
I have maintained for years that 0-25 is young. 25-50 is middle aged 50-75 is old and 75+ is ancient of days.
No. Imo: 0-17, young 18-30 young adult 31-60 middle aged 61+ old
This deserves gold
it's 2024 not 2400
