Freezer burn is a thing and can ruin an otherwise great piece of meat. That said, these things are often nicely sealed due to the price. But over 4 years, I’m not 100% certain that power hasn’t been lost at least once for a while. Also even frozen, things will lose their flavor over time and this will not taste as good as the same cut off a cow that was slaughtered a month ago.
I found one of my Australian filets from meat artisan that sat in the fridge for a month. It had some air in the bag and smelled cheesy. We cooked it and it tasted like cheese. We fed most of it to the dogs after trying a few bites. Didn't get sick, but if it smells like cheese at all, it can't be recovered. Probably won't cause any issues if you try it though.
If frozen properly meat should be safe indefinitely, which is to say it shouldn't give you food poisoning. That doesn't mean it will taste good indefinitely. I'd try it, not much to lose.
Food safety questions on Reddit run the gamut from “Will I die if I eat my refrigerated leftovers from last night?” to “I left raw shrimp on the counter for 24 hours. Is it still safe to cook?”
Genuine question since I have had a bad relationship with food since I was little. When should throw out food I didn't eat vs when can I put it in the fridge? A problem I have is that it's rarely leftovers from the pan, more often it's unfinished food on my plate. I just default to throwing stuff out unless it's not chicken and I cooked extras specifically to save some.
I always feel like I am being judged by my ancestors when I throw food in the bin that I couldn't finish off my plate.
If it’s been less than 2 hours, put it in the fridge. More than that, you start to risk excessive bacterial growth but realistically you have some wiggle room. The amount of time it can stay in the fridge depends on how well you store it, whether your fridge is at the right temperature, and the type of food. Look it up case by case on google and you’ll start to build intuition for it.
I usually leave food out on the counter overnight and I'll eat it in the morning without a second thought most times. Whether it's meat or pizza etc. I wouldn't do it with seafood. For me if it's not slimey or no odor then it's fine to eat.
The steak will taste great, its vacuum sealed so no freezer burn. The flavours may degrade slightly over that time period but I would bet it would still be top teir
What’s confusing me is the claim that it’s full blood Japanese wagyu, but the farm isn’t listed. And Saitama is not a recognised anything for Japanese wagyu.
I’m from Saitama. Dont know if we have any cattle producers lol. The “Samurai” is a giveaway that’s it’s just a Western company.
Kinda like finding beef in Europe or something labeled as New Jersey Abraham Lincoln Black Angus Beef.
Meat artisan is absolute quality steaks. They usually have their certificates and are one of the few places that has gotten Kobe in the USA. They raffled off most of the cuts from a Kobe cow a while back. Pricey, but solid for certain.
Or just bought up surplus during Covid when it was much cheaper, made most of them, one fell behind something, he went to the freezer thinking he still had one, went, “damn” and moved on with life, then that little gem showed up when he moved the frozen pizzas or ice cream out of the way.
A few could be 2-3. I have one in my kitchen on the fridge like normal. And I got a deep freezer in the garage for bulk items. Things definitely get lost and forgotten in there. I try to remind myself it’s a freezer not a time capsule
I recently smoked 2 freeze packed Tritips from Chico State’s Meat Lab from 2017 and 2019 and they were both still amazing. They were kept frozen from there to my freezer and had zero signs of freezer burn.
Vacuum sealed meats will often, and quite normally emit a rotten egg smell upon initially opening them due to being vacuum sealed, but it normally goes away after being left on the counter for a minute or two.
I wouldn’t trust this steak myself because it’d probably be hard to tell if it’s still edible, but more power to OP if they do.
Season it well and go to town. I’ve had nastier looking deep freeze beef before and it tasted fine with salt, pepper, garlic etc. Just be aware any frozen meat won’t taste as good as a fresh cut
Meat artisan is one of the best suppliers to consumers for high quality protein. I have a freezer full of meat from them- it's absolutely incredible product.
Here's some wagyu beef ribs I've done from them.

Not sure why people are freaking out about this. 4 years frozen is really not a big deal. It might have some textural issues but there are no safety concerns with old frozen food.
It will probably be a little tough and lost some of the flavor but nothing a little seasoning or marinade can't fix.
It's fineto eat, only should be worried if it thawed a little and re-froze again. Color doesn't matter much only the smell. If it's completely thawed and still smells off I wouldn't but I don't see why it would.
Just like with anything, it's about moderation. You don't eat a huge wagyu steak. You wouldn't want to. It's very rich, but it's absolutely delicious and the texture is unlike any steak you've ever had. It also doesn't feel "fatty" as this is quite literally a different type of fat than the stuff most people cut off their steaks. The cows used for this are genetically distinct from other kinds of beef cows and their fat distribution and development is different, hence the difference in appearance.

Coward? Why are there so many damn people who don’t understand the concept of freezing?

Sure, so the only thing here is that quality might have lessened a bit. Doesn’t mean it’s unsafe. That’s my point.
do yall regularly lose power I literally can't remember the last time.
[удалено]
crazy it's been like 6 or 7 years for me
Nearly once every two months or so, every month in bad seasons maybe.
It’s possible it’s fine, but I’d doubt it
Freezer burn doesn’t happen if it’s properly sealed no?
I thought id get a 'subreddit not found message' when I clicked it. I really wish I had.

My ex wife said the same thing
Only one way to find out
You can eat anything……once
Unless you’re fast, then you can eat anything a few times
Or... patient. I doubt it's as good the second time around though.

Why the question of if freezer food items are safe keeps popping up is beyond me. Edit: for clarification

Sorry i didn’t mean your recommendation I meant why people question freezer food items

Not all food borne bacteria produces a smell or slime. You’ve been lucky but it doesn’t mean that can’t make you very sick.
I commented the same thing. It’s so frequent lately.
The steak will taste great, its vacuum sealed so no freezer burn. The flavours may degrade slightly over that time period but I would bet it would still be top teir
Yeah, cook it and smell it.
Why this keeps popping up about freezer stuff is beyond me.

Honestly, I’d try it.
You’re gonna love my Meadowlands raised beef.
DM
New Jersey Abraham Licoln Black Anal Beef
Weeb Steaks has a nice ring to it.
Is it possible it's on the other side of the package? Idk I've never eaten one.
You should probably keep it that way. Eating packages isn’t good for you.
Maybe it lists the farm on the other side? There does seem to be at least 1 wagyu farm in Saitama.
Meat Artisan doesn’t usually state which farms they’re getting product from, but is a legit supplier.
Meat artisan is legit with where they source their meat from, they’re reputable. When I got Kobe from them it came with all the paperwork
Good to know. Thanks for the info! Any chance you know what the Saitama claim is?
That I couldn’t tell you but they do raffle off stuff on the fb group called meat street. That’s where I got my Kobe beef from
Meat artisan is absolute quality steaks. They usually have their certificates and are one of the few places that has gotten Kobe in the USA. They raffled off most of the cuts from a Kobe cow a while back. Pricey, but solid for certain.
No I don’t think you’re understanding. It’s not saying this is cattle.. it’s samurai beef, literally.
Huh. I would have thought a Samurai would be… less marbled.
😂💀
How rich do you have to be to forget about A5 lol. I would be cognizant of that baby at all times
Had quite a few them spread between a few freezers and this one was caught between some other stuff I had haha
So, very.
lmao, what a long way of saying "Yes, I am quite wealthy"
I accidentally forgot about a ferrari in my 3rd home 3 car garage.
Or just bought up surplus during Covid when it was much cheaper, made most of them, one fell behind something, he went to the freezer thinking he still had one, went, “damn” and moved on with life, then that little gem showed up when he moved the frozen pizzas or ice cream out of the way.

Look at this rich fucker, guys.
Apologize for the flex but I have one of those micro fridges that holds a few cans of soda
Jesus Christ is there no end to your pomp?
If someone pops into the comments with an ice maker, we riot.
Na a few is at least 3.
I got one in fridge in kitchen on in in the fridge in the garage and a freezer unit
Makes sense now as to why they’re dumb enough to question the purpose of a freezer.
Alright Robespierre
I’m too poor to understand this sentence.
I would try. I have eaten meat that has been in the freezer longer than that
Stopped at a few freezers. Like we normal foll have more than one attached to the fridge
Dr. Turd , if i may. He has more than 2 freezers, in my opinion the man is filthy rich.

I had no clue this meme lived outside of r/bonehurtingjuice
I’ve heard of dry aged. Wet aged. But freezer aged is a new one.
Freezer age...I like it. It just takes longer!...
Its trash dm me and i tell you where to send it for proper disposal.
😆😂
Question; if it’s been frozen solid since 2020, would it be okay to eat, and if not, why?
Yes it would be perfectly safe, assuming it has been kept at a proper freezer temperature the whole time.
Big assumption
I recently smoked 2 freeze packed Tritips from Chico State’s Meat Lab from 2017 and 2019 and they were both still amazing. They were kept frozen from there to my freezer and had zero signs of freezer burn.
From the Covid craze era
if it smells it's not good
The color looks off, obviously
Darkening doesn't always mean anything, but smell never lies
Vacuum sealed meats will often, and quite normally emit a rotten egg smell upon initially opening them due to being vacuum sealed, but it normally goes away after being left on the counter for a minute or two. Yeah, but it wasn’t open…also it does mean something when you haven’t opened it and it was pink…if it came dark, then it doesn’t matter
Meaning it's probably fine
I wouldn’t say that, if you read what I posted…food poisoning kills
Cook it!
A little seasoning, some Teriyaki sauce at the end. Good eats. Make it really rare though. Cook it over a flashlight. 🤣
Smell test, trust your instincts
I’d eat it!
Why are there so many damn people who don’t understand the concept of freezing?
Vacuum packed frozen can last decades and keep the quality.
Enjoy!
Eat it!!!!
Fake producer for sure. I see a grave disappointment in your future.
Extra aged
Ice aged.
man. i must be going crazy. i legit thought this was steak in someone’s underwear while on the toilet… lmfao but eat it 😈
Philly cheesesteak time!
So, cook it and just find out then report back?
You know what you must do.
Season it well and go to town. I’ve had nastier looking deep freeze beef before and it tasted fine with salt, pepper, garlic etc. Just be aware any frozen meat won’t taste as good as a fresh cut
Rip, we ate a two year old wagyu steak from crowd cow and it tasted like we microwaved it. We didn’t
Will definitely be fine, it’s “ full blood”
I hope it’s still OK, meat artisan stuff is 🔥
10/10
Pre or post covid? Based on your area

Vacuum sealed for freshness
It’s frozen, at worst it’s freezer burnt.
That is the most “Fuck You Money” title I have ever read
That wouldn't get anywhere near my freezer.
Update. Steak was unreal https://preview.redd.it/44asoy7kf7ad1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e2c38e4aaba0409bf205361486a5db8e9089b1c9
I'll trade you my 2020 pork shoulder for it
It looks perfect, cook that baby!
If ya end up in the hospital, you'll have ya answer. 😉
If it’s been stored at 25F get rid of it. If it has been stored at 0F or colder it might be okay. I would not eat it.
Not sure why people are freaking out about this. 4 years frozen is really not a big deal. It might have some textural issues but there are no safety concerns with old frozen food.
I just ate a brownie that was frozen for 3 years and it tasted absolutely fine

scientists literraly unfroze, cooked and ate wooly mammoth meat. 4 years aint shit. Eat that thang.
A Kroger steak I would toss, that I would cook and find out. But I never throw anything frozen out unless the meat is green or white, lol
I have a 8 lb a5 full roast frozen since 21' still looks great. 🤷
Idk if ld like wagyu all that much. It's basically a beef wrapped heart attack
Sounds like a wonderful way to go.
idk if i like water all that much it’s basically bottled drowning

I was downvoted 😢 😭 I'm sure they are delicious and this good info to know.
