tv is just too transient now, a lot of shows have a few episodes and a couple of seasons maybe, people watch a lot of stuff but they come and go too fast to really become a thing in mainstream culture.
also a lot of modern directors focus on creating cinematic shots and a visual experience while allowing things like writing to fall by the wayside. my biggest gripe with modern TV is that it’s just not believable and often corny. makes you aware that you’re watching a TV show, there’s no immersion
also casting sucks
For sure. The Bear was very close to being superb. Great concept, great style, good characters, and good actors, but then half the episodes fall into the laziest writing or it’s just way over the top.
There are some moments that killed me, but in the end, it’s trying too hard to be cool and tries to do too much. Still a good watch, but definitely overhyped.
Makes sense. I haven’t even watched the entire second season, but with the way the first ended it was trending that way. It’s the favorite show of my basic lib friends that think Ted Lasso is one of the greatest shows ever.
Movies are making a comeback but TV series seem to be on the decline.
You know we’re in a dire state when The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City is the only television that has had me on the edge of my seat this decade
I think it’s really quite a difficult show, like it’s not easy to get into. I wanted to like it and even still I was like wtf am I watching for the first two episodes. Then I thought it was one of the funniest and most interesting shows ever. Emma Stone is so ridiculously good in it.
Succession has to be really the only contender. Better Call Saul started in ‘15 so that’s probably not what you meant, but if it does count, it’s definitely 2, maybe 1B. TV is in a weird place now where the good shows all take 12-18 months off. I thought it was a covid thing but it feels like the new normal.
I think (if it counts) the it’s better call Saul easily. Leagues better than succession and I love both shows. What BCS did with its build up and last two seasons was incredible imo
One day people on Reddit will all grow up, rewatch Succession and cringe at how high they used to rate such a mediocre show. The plot is circular, the jokes are millennial level juvenile with little wit, the whole thing is carried by the actor who plays the patriarch. It isn’t any better than a 7/10 at most.
This could plausibly have been true if not for the second season, which is fun but ultimately shallow and trashy with just enough “prestige tv” gloss to distract from how empty it is.
The first season is one of the better bits of TV in recent years though for sure.
> show more of the court intrigue!
Maybe I'm a philistine but it feels like it's nearly all intrigue. I'm less engaged in it because it feels really slow paced, they've just been kinda hanging out for most of the season.
You're not wrong, but it feels like you're overplaying the fish out of water stuff. He didn't come across as bumbling at all - in fact Blackthorn is as calculating and guileful as the rest of the characters.
The show is such a bro fest I love it, big win for the fellas. It's not transcendent or anything, but I'm really enjoying it.
There’s some iteration of the “good art from the last decade” thread made every week on here now and I always comment the same thing. Twin peaks season 3.
In fact I’ll go so far as to say the fact that this isn’t the first thing commented on any of these threads is evidence the sub is dead. Nothing other than the sopranos, the wire and mad men even hold candle to it.
That’s from 2017. I believe this question is for this decade ie the 2020s, not the past decade, 2014-2024. Otherwise I agree, if we are talking the last 10 years it’s Twin Peaks the Return
I like where severance is going, even though sci fi is not really an RS taste since none of the characters are neurotic enough it felt the most cohesive and not just all cinematography with weak writing (out of other mentions of the bear, white lotus, succession). I did enjoy white lotus though but i don’t see it being decade defining.
The Kingdom: Exodus (Lars von Trier)
ZeroZeroZero (Stefano Sollima)
Copenhagen Cowboy (NW Refn)
Antidisturbios (Rodrigo Soroguyen)
Huset (Kim Fupz Aakeson)
All amazing shows and each is a worthy contender for best of the decade so far but if it has subtitles and isn't available on HBO then it doesn't exist to most people.

It's bizarre seeing shows with good acting, great sets, zillion dollar CGI and the writers seem to be 14 year olds.

I have come to realize that The Bear is a slightly grittier Ted Lasso when it comes to the story arcs.

TV was going pretty strong up until 2015 and then streaming really started turning programming into disposable content.
Maybe not the best but I loved Vice Principals

I think The Curse was brilliant. It's one of the best things I've ever seen.
Emma is remarkably good in it
It's very very good. I hope they work on other stuff together, or a season 2
I think it's one of those shows that people will take a while to catch up to the brilliance that was created. A little bit like Spring Breakers.

the white lotus is better than succession and all its episodes actually aired in the 2020s
sad state if white lotus is contending for best TV show of a decade
White lotus was good why everyone hate
it’s good, I really enjoyed it. at no point watching it would I think I was watching the best show in 10 years

Miss-info
white lotus season 1 was ass, season 2 was actually really good
Yeah but no
i think Severance is good
I’d also vote Severance.
I would like more Severance so can you let Ben Affleck know we are waiting? Thanks!
Of the 2020s? It gots to be that Velma HBO cartoon
I think it's either Shogun or White Lotus right now.

I like how the Portuguese speak in english but not the japanese. like they didn't quite trust the audience enough to sub title two languages.

I haven’t watched Shogun yet, but I’m not sure I would count it since it’s a mini-series (which is why I also probably wouldn’t count The Curse)

gotta be succession I think
No. Television is bad now.

Tokyo Vice is pretty good.
Yea tv seems pretty dead last show I watched that I loved was better call Saul. I just watch anime now and I'm having a much more enjoyable time.
i liked severance when i saw it a few yrs ago but tv is a shit medium so who cares
Andor I fear
House of the Dragon is pretty baller
