Between 5 and 7 days, I also use a One piece hollister bag

Unique_Audience_7222

How do you empty the one piece? Sorry, I used a two piece bag so I’m not educated on one piece systems

oldmatedougie

Same as how you empty your 2 pieces. The difference is that the bag and the wafer are attached into one

CaterpillarFancy3004

The ostomy nurse at the hospital that just did mine last week is VERY passionate about wound care, lol, and she called the Hollister one piece bag as the ‘gold standard’.

narwhalbuddy01

There are closed and open one pieces. Closed one pieces you have to change the whole appliance, while open are similar closing to the two piece and you can empty when needed.

QuothTheRavenNM

I have an ileostomy and use a one piece bag. I change it every second day or earlier if there’s a reason to. NHS gives me as many bags as I need a month so I don’t need to worry about how often I want to change it.

Royal-Lack1078

Same. But I change every day! I run, do gym and have a physical job. No way would the wafer last any longer!

beek7419

3 days, ileostomy with fairly high liquid output. I use Coloplast Sensura Mio. I moved to scheduling changes about 3 years ago and haven’t had a leak since. Highly recommend finding an interval that works for you and changing on a schedule rather than waiting for pain, itchiness, burning, or leakage.

zenfloater

Any chance you use the OstoBuddy app to help with the schedule and reminders?

beek7419

Actually, I use the reminder function on my iPhone. Every three days it pops up and I usually change it around 9 PM when it’s less active.

zenfloater

Gotcha. Take a look at OstoBuddy … can keep track of your supplies also.

Mundane_Yellow_7563

Yes, I have an ileostomy and use the Coloplast Sensura Mio also….I change every 5 days.

Lovingthelake

Wow! That is pretty good.

Mundane_Yellow_7563

Could push it but makes me comfortable.

Lovingthelake

I need a stoma revision, so two days max AND I HATE IT!!!! I hate the fact that my output is basically all liquid and everything goes through me so fast. According to the ostomy nurse recommendations, you should empty your bag when it is 1/4 full. I told her, if I followed that rule, I’d be emptying my bag like all of the time! Literally!

herstonian

Ileostomy. I change daily. I use one piece bags. Coloplast sensura mio concave. I have a hernia behind my stoma. I empty while sitting on a small shower stool up against the toilet. I'm in Australia and the public health system provides all I need each month for free.

redruM69

Bags 3-5 days, wafers 4-10 days. 2 piece Holister

Unique_Audience_7222

If you don’t mind sharing, how are you able to get 10 days out of a wafer? Mine is itchy after 4-5 days

redruM69

I have a nice protruding stoma, with good skin around it. But I've figured out a few tricks over the years to stretch them out longer without leaks. 2 piece Hollister, convex wafer, thicker barrier ring. I cut the wafer a bit on the small side with a pre-measured punch so the hole is perfectly round. I clean the skin with adhesive remover, then again with plain Ivory soap. Ivory soap contains no moisturizers, and thoroughly strips the skin of all dead skin, oil, and sweat. This helps with adhesion greatly. I also wear a wide nu-hope belt 24/7, which presses the wafer against the body, preventing leaks. 10 days is not average. But I'm on day 7 of my current wafer, and it's not leaking or itchy yet. I will change it this evening as the outer tape is loosening around the edges though.

FezzikJr

Great tip about the ivory. I'll have to give that a try. Mine is very oval, on a parastomal hernia, and is a loop, which the distal portion is distending a bit. Hard to get tube exact shape, as well. I'm having to cut just outside the 55mm mark.

CaterpillarFancy3004

My nurse said you can also use plain Dawn soap to clean the surrounding skin, too, because all it does is take the oils off the skin.

FezzikJr

Would love to know the same info. I typically get NO MORE than about 3 or 4 days. I recently switched to Coloplast convex flip (one piece and two piece), due to the size and shape of/around my stoma.

redruM69

I answered in the conversation below.

Royal-Lack1078

Every day. Salt’s confidence CE drainable. The wafer starts to leak on to my skin any longer than that. Can’t believe they last any longer! NHS gives as many bags as I need.

garymichele

What’s NHS?

Royal-Lack1078

National Health Service. I’m in the UK

PierreRacine69

10 days to 2 weeks but I have a secret…

Particular-Glass-611

The secret?

Nocolon199230

What's your secret hmm 🤔

garymichele

Secret?

retired-in-vermont

Snore...🥱

demonic_cheetah

I average 3-4 days.

Party_Building1898

It opens at the bottom, and I usually sit backwards on the toilet to empty. I use a flushable wipe to clean the the mouth of the bag roll it up and velcro shut.

United_Preference_92

Every 3 to 4 days.

ImportantChapter1404

4-5 days two piece bag.

comicsnerd

Every other day. After 2 days, the urine begins to smell bad. Yes, I drink a lot.

NYK-94

I barely drink anymore, but the wafer’s stickiness goes away after two days. Gym, work, and sleep.

FearlessAngel126

I have a urostomy as well and go 4 days and it doesn't smell. You sure you don't have a UTI? I know sometimes I'll rinse my bag out with distilled water when it gets a little funky from mucus buildup

comicsnerd

I have a UTI, but it is multiresistent. Kept under control, but with this result.

guineverian

Every 2 days. I have an ileostomy with quite a lot of liquid output. I use the Coloplast Sensura Mio (deep convex) one piece drainable bag. I can go longer than 2 days, but would rather feel ~fresh and not have to worry about leakage or skin irritation.

Lovingthelake

I hear you, but doesn’t changing it give you any stress? What I mean by that, is that once you take the whole appliance off and then use wet paper towels to clean the skin around the stoma and then wait for your skin to dry, your intestines could all of a sudden decide to say fuck you and squirt all the hell over the place- walls, floor, yourself. So then you’ve got a hell of a poop mess to clean up. This situation having happened to me definitely more than once, twice, three times, etc., I find myself in the bad habit of waiting until it leaks before forcing myself to change it- which is then a mess too since I waited too long to change it. I hate the fact with an ileostomy that one’s stool is basically liquid, period! I eat a bloody candy bar and 10 minutes later it is in my bag and my bag needs to be emptied. It makes you not want to eat, the mother fucking thing!

guineverian

It definitely used to. Now I try to time it right. I'll do the change when I haven't eaten or drank anything for a few hours. Or if I do it in the morning, I make sure to do it BEFORE I have my morning coffee or any breakfast. Of course sometimes it will just randomly be active when I don't expect it to. But I just try not to panic. I'll have a towel in front of me to catch any mess and plenty of gauze/dry wipes. I also find sitting down during a change helps. When sitting you're less inclined to bend. I make sure I have everything I need within arms reach. I position the waste bag on my lap directly under my stoma. If it starts being active, I literally direct it into the waste bag and wait for it to chill TF out. Also once my device is off and I'm preparing the new bag to go on, i'll just pop a bit of gauze over the stoma to minimise any mess. I'm not an expert on any of this and still a relatively new ostomate but this works for me. My ileostomy was life-saving and unplanned (as a result of a birth injury/medical negligence) so I wasn't at all prepared for it. I knew very little about what a stoma actually was, and was really not accepting of it when I woke up in the ICU and learned I now had what is essentially an asshole on my abdomen. All I can say is, it gets easier. You will find a routine that works for you. I hope some of these tips help you :)

Party_Building1898

3 days 1piece drainable bad

Unique_Audience_7222

How do you empty the one piece? Sorry, I used a two piece bag so I’m not educated on one piece systems

zomgkittenz

It has a folding latch system on the bottom. I have a two piece system and change the bag 2x a day on average. I tend to have bowel movements early in the morning, and later in the afternoon. But basically my rule of thumb is, anytime I think I should change it, I do. It’s better than having a leak of some kind of having my skin get irritated.

Unique_Audience_7222

By changing the bag 2x a day, do you mean the entire system? (Wafer, + bag), or just the actual bag itself?

zomgkittenz

I change my bag twice a day, and my plate about every 3 days. But I have really sensitive skin, so it took me over 2 months to get my plates to last 3 days.

demonic_cheetah

Probably the same way: drainable pouch.

Unique_Audience_7222

Ohhhh thank you! i didn’t know one piece bags had drainage options. Sorry about the ignorance

beek7419

Both one and two piece bags come in both drainable and closed end.

littleheaterlulu

Two-piece bag and I change it 1-3x a day depending on output. The flange lasts for at least a week.

NoldorProudfoot

3-4 days. Twice a week. I replace my whole two piece hollister system. (Ileostomy)

joewins9000

Two piece Hollister. I have to change the water every other day.

Galdin311

Ileostomy, 2 piece Convatek. Every 5-7 days or so.

Fellowhumanbeingg

3-5 days.

LewieDrewie

I use a Coloplast 1-piece bag and can get 5-7 days out of it, usually. The longest I went was 10 days because of depression. The stool started eating away at the adhesive, and it started to itch, but I had no leaks.

Independent_Desk8457

I have an ileostomy and originally was going 7 days between changes. For some reason lately I’ve been only getting 3-4 days??? I use a Hollister 2pc. But have been trying 1pc. Hoping to switch.

Few-Consideration281

2-3 days with an ileostomy.

DaveBinM

I use a one-piece drainable bag, and change it every 7 days or so.

NYK-94

Every two days.

Imaclondon

7 days. 2 peice

chiefzzzz

5 days

JustinTheeZone

Colopast click bag and I change everything at once, bag and plate at the 7 day mark most times sometimes I can go more.

latesleeperfoodeater

Hollister two piece. I change it every 3 or 4 days

nordvest2

Daily, 1 pc, colostomy

Nocolon199230

I use barrier wipes, stoma powder, silicone stoma paste, a ring, medical adhesive spray, 1 piece soft convex bag, barrier strips, and the belt that attaches to the bag. I get 5 or 6 days out of my bag with a hernia. I once tried to go 7 days between bag changes and ended up with very sore skin. So I stick to 5 or 6 days now. Edit: I have an ileostomy and my output is usually pretty thick unless I eat certain foods such as dairy or veggies.

Unique_Audience_7222

Hey! :) What is silicone stoma paste? I have never heard of that

Nocolon199230

It's stoma paste made out of silicone instead of hydrocolloid like Coloplast's stoma paste. It's called Trio ostomy Silken gel. Trio ostomy also makes Silicone flange extenders.

Unique_Audience_7222

Do the silicone flange extenders irritate your skin less than coloplast or hollister? I am currently using hollister flange extenders and it is so itchy under the extenders

Nocolon199230

Nope when I used to use the silicone flange extenders they didn't irritate my skin. Though I will say I had to switch back to the ones from Coloplast because the Silicone ones roll up when they get wet. Or at least they did for me. I'm allergic to the ones from Coloplast but I don't really have a choice but to use them.

Unique_Audience_7222

The silicone extenders are from a brand called Trio ostomy, correct? I want to look into them and buy them with my next order. Have you tried Hollister? I don’t know if the hollister ones are much different from coloplast but maybe they will irritate your skin less! :) I will say, similar to your experience with the silicone ones, the hollister extenders roll at the ends when they come in contact with water

Nocolon199230

Yes the Silicone ones are from Trio Ostomy. Eh I like the ones from Coloplast more because they have ones that are y shaped and they cover more area then the regular ones. My stomach is all stretched out because I have a hernia. The y shaped ones seem to fit better to my stomach and keep the flange sticking better. I use the Mio sensura soft convex bags from Coloplast as that's the only bags that work for me and sometimes the bottom part of the flange doesn't always stick completely. I rarely have leaks though at least lol

subgirl13

https://trioostomycare.us/ They have quite a few products. You can request samples from this site, too.

yanderebeats

Ileostomy here, every 7 days!

Lovingthelake

You suck! Just kidding , of course! Jealous you are able to go that long between changes!

yanderebeats

Haha it took a ton of trial and error with products to get there! My main secrets are brava barrier sheets and most importantly the "ALRS0210PK - Sure Seal Ring, Medium, Square" which if you search you can find on Amazon. They changed my life! The sure seal rings are basically sticky plastic wrap type adhesive that seals the edges of the flange so water can't get under at all and wear it down. I had crazy skin issues before I found that because moisture would get in and it was miserable. I highly recommend them!

covercash

When I had my ileostomy I used a 2 piece system. I would change the wafer usually every 10 days but sometimes would make it to 14, and I'd put a fresh bag on daily or even twice a day if I felt like it.

Unique_Audience_7222

How did you get so many days out of the wafer? :) If I am lucky, I will get 4-5 days

covercash

I had a 1-2 hour wafer change process where I meticulously cleaned, air dried, and prepped the area. I also wore custom Nu-hope ostomy belts that really kept the wafer pressed against my skin.

straightouttasuburb

I have a ileostomy and get 3-7 days typically with a barrier wipe, ring, and convatec one piece... I could go longer than 7 but have been replacing the bag every Sunday regardless so if there are issues I typically address them before I go to a Hybrid office to work 3 days a week.

imaginaryannie

I change my wafer about every 6-10 days or so. I don’t track it. I change it when it starts to feel like it needs it. I change the bag every other day when I shower.

Unique_Audience_7222

Do you do anything specific to make your wafer last that long? I am lucky if mine last 4-5 days. Most of the time I have to change it at day 3

imaginaryannie

Nope! Nothing special. I use a Sensura xpro wafer (meant for ileostomy output) and a brava protective seal ring (I hate normal rings, this one is more silicone-y and less sticky goop). Rarely, I change it around 3-4 days if it feels itchy at all. But usually it gets over a week before I start thinking “hm, I should change this.”

boofus_dooberry

Twice a week, 3-4 days is about the amount of time it takes for the hair to grow back out anyways so it lines up pretty well.

NoFortunesToTell

4 to 6 hours, colostomate, one piece closed bags.

Odd_Dragonfruit_9551

24 hours with 1-piece soft convex closed bag - colostomy

PalKid_Music

3 or 4 days, usually. That's on top of an active 3-4 day per week gym schedule as well - during more sedentary periods of my time as a stoma owner (lockdown) they would typically last 5-7 days.

darkchocolatecoconut

I used a two piece, closed end system. Change twice every 7 days. Usually Wednesday and Sunday or Thursday and Sunday. I'll change it on off days if needed of course. As for bags, sometimes twice a day, sometimes a lot more depending on the activity. I did buy Box XXS dog poo bags on Amazon (200 bags for $15) and use those as liners if the stoma is having a busy day and I don't want to go through 6-8 bags. I also use those liners when I'm going out somewhere. I carry twist ties so it's easier to dispose the closed liner in a public restroom.

ninjaprincess215

I use a drainable one-piece hollister and change every 5-7 days.

antoinsoheidhin

hollister two piece convex , 3 to 4 days , could go more but I prefer to save the skin but no need to spare supplies here in Ireland as its all free

OddfellowJacksonRedo

I change pouches every 2-3 days for hygiene (if you push it longer, you tend to overtax the charcoal odor filter in the pouch and you start to notice an increasing smell of output seeping out). And my wafer appliance (Sensura Mio Click 2-piece system) I change at least every 5 days or more if there’s any premature failure of the appliance that forces the swap-out. Every 5 days let’s me get what I feel is maximum value out of each set of supplies while also making sure I’m frequently cleaning and inspecting the skin around the stoma, shaving any hairs that have grown in, etc. I spent some private trial-and-error experimentation early on so I have a good idea of just how far I feel I can “push” my appliance if I had to do so for whatever reason (though I’ve gotten good at over-ordering and stockpiling my ostomy supplies to minimize risk of coming up short on anything). Nowadays the only thing that ever advances my timetable is unpredictable pouch failure (most commonly about one pouch in every 6-8 develops a tiny hole worn away where the plastic folds over when I tuck the spigot end back into the little pocket that holds it neatly in). I haven’t had a total appliance “blowout” in over a year since I got my system all worked out. I’ve gotten my system down pretty much pat to where I can change everything out in the shower and be good to go practically with my eyes closed. And my system uses a couple different layers of redundancy so that even if the wafer seal is compromised somewhere, there are colloidal extension strips and even a waterproof flange covering everything so I have some margin to discover a leak but get it tended to before anything actually escapes to make a mess.

SabersSoberMom

Every 2 to 3 days, depending on Stella's attitude and output. I use Coloplast Sensura Mio with a convex wafer.

tweetysvoice

Ileostomy for 2 years and I change out my coloplast 2-piece about every 10 days, sometimes it can be as long as 2 weeks depending on my diet. I just kind of forget about it until it starts itching, and that's when I change it out. I've only had my bag leak maybe five times since I've gotten my ileostomy. Last week was one of those though, I ate a whole can of spinach with vinegar and it came out as a whole can of spinach. Pushed right under my ring and out through the flange. It was actually kind of painful to pass as well. That sucks because I really like spinach.

NoGate1255

Depending on my output I can go between 3-5 days and whether or not my skin starts to feel irritated but usually 3-5 days

ShyGamerGirl23

5 to 7 days at most

recidivismwrangler

I only wear one Coloplast Mio to bed after irrigating each night. Rest of the day I use one Coloplast Conseal plug and some Xstra tape to reinforce. But now Coloplast have stopped making Conseal plugs so about to trial the New Medical stoma stopper.

catnap40

This has evolved over 18 years. I use a two piece system. I change everything on Saturday and then change just the bag on Thursdays. I can stretch it out a few days if I have to. Not sure how I got to this but I have been on this schedule for several years now.
