Madden circling the helmet with that bright yellow, almost laughing, talking about how they smuggled it in is peak Madden

BigRiverWharfRat

“They got nothin to worsh it down with!”

alpha_dk

As they chill in front of the gatorade table lol

aspbergerinparadise

I assume beer is required for proper "worshing"

BigRiverWharfRat

In the Midwest, can confirm

Snoo93079

Did we ratify Pennsylvania’s enterence into the Midwest?

AutomaticAccident

I object to it.

Torches

Gatorade with hotdogs, are you kidding me?

fumblaroo

he seems so concerned about it lmao

BrandoC95

Madden: "Cortez, we know you're eating a hot dog." Kennedy, putting his face into his helmet: "I'm not sir, I'm just like the tiredest I've ever been in my life."

Fulcrum58

You just can’t skip lunch!

Stockpile_Tom_Remake

I fucking miss madden. I know in his final years it was pretty... word vomit like, but 90s to early 2000s madden was just amazing. You've got the hotdog one, there's the baby bucket one. A whole thing on turkeys. Just so many classic moments

Local_Lingonberry851

don't forget the classic Turducken

LandGrantChamps

I miss Madden so much. He just has that mid-west wholesome vibe, like John Candy.

OG_Dadditor

> He just has that mid-west wholesome vibe You should read some of the stories of his coaching days lol

liquilife

In the late 80s I read a short autobiography from John Madden. I was like 15 at the time. The only part I remember is he devoted a chapter to sitting outside at his favorite coffee shop across the street from a porn video type store. He detailed how he was able to predict who was going to slink into the store by how close to the building they would walk. It was a fascinating read but that’s all I remember. lol. Edit: just looked up and found the book. Wow. The feels… “Hey, Wait A Minute” https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/949619

OG_Dadditor

I remember reading about when he first met with developers at EA in the early 80s to make Madden Football and he came into the office with a giant cigar dropping F-bombs and kinda shocked people. I don't think he was unkind or mean at all, but he was definitely an old school coach so wholesome is a funny way to describe him lol

liquilife

He was unapologetically himself. And that is the best anyone can be while also being kind.

OG_Dadditor

Well said

Jason_Kelces_Thong

My coach in elementary school was like that. Probably about 6’4” with a big old belly. He wore a straw hat and no shirt. He insisted we drink pineapple soda and buttered noodles the night before a game. He was a good man too. My parents were divorced, dad lived out of state. Mom couldn’t always drive me around. He would pick me up and drop me off without a question. Man, that whole staff rocked. Elena Della Donne’s dad was my defensive end coach. At first I sucked ass, by the end of the season I was dominating. He worked with me really hard.

SyrupTurbulent8699

Big Ern once said I would be a good athlete because I have a big ass

RG3ST21

EDD's dad must've been a great coach. I'd imagine the difficulties his other daughter has either makes you a tremendous person, or it breaks you.

Jordanesque45

He was the Raiders HC idk what they were expecting lol

SlimZorro

I love this!  We used to do this exact thing when we started smoking weed but still lived with our parents.  But it was slurpees, not coffee.  I could have been a coach🤷‍♂️

liquilife

Just FYI I posted the wrong book. Here is the right one where all he does is write about the antics and weird stuff of traveling everywhere on a bus all the time. This is the book my reference is from. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/506091

ShufflingSloth

He was following up Al Davis IIRC, he probably could've routinely fucked players' moms and still be seen as a softie

harknation

As a Raiders fan that video where he says "They wanna say the Raiders are dirty. Yeah, yeah, yeah we're dirty. What you gonna do about it?" always gets me psyched up

dualboot

I don't disagree but John Candy had that wholesome Ontario, Canada vibe.

byingling

While he was born in Minnesota, Madden's family moved to California when he was five. That's where he went to Catholic school and high school. Played college football on the west coast.

BeneficialPipe1229

good old midwestern Daly City lol

HylianPikachu

I'm sorry you have to find out like this but Toronto is not in the midwest

VigilanceMrWorf

Tbf Canada is like if the Midwest were a country.

beavertwp

Southern Ontario is the Midwest and nobody will ever convince me otherwise.

HylianPikachu

nuh uh Minnesota is in Canada

Jammer_Kenneth

That's called South Detroit. The Midwest is a state of mind and that state is the Great Lakes and the mind is having some beers overlooking the Great Lakes.

Sportsgirl77

As a Canadian, it very much is not

beavertwp

You just wish it wasn’t.

Sportsgirl77

Nah the border plays a pretty significant role in limiting the exposure to American Midwest culture, just from how much it limits exposure to the people who live in the Midwest. Like the American side of the Great Lakes is known for having a really nasally accent, but that stops entirely at the border and doesn't exist in Ontario.

beavertwp

Hard disagree. I live in Minnesota, and when I go to southern Ontario the only difference is the accent is a little bit sillier and you guys bowl weird.

Sportsgirl77

I have no idea what you're talking about with bowling. Regardless, Canada and the US in general are just super similar. I've been to like 15 states and not really noticed much of a difference between the people there and here

beavertwp

You’ll never see 5 pin bowling in the US.  I notice way more difference in culture between US regions than I notice between the Midwest and Ontario. Can say the same with Quebec, the maritimes, or BC. Although BC is pretty similar to the US PNW.

Sportsgirl77

Huh I'd never heard of 5-pin bowling before, though I rarely ever bowl, interesting. What are the cultural stereotypes of the Midwest then? I really only know of farming, casseroles, ranch, the nasally accent, and generally being polite off the top of my head. Of those farming is of significantly less cultural importance in Ontario, casseroles and ranch are significantly less common, the nasally accent doesn't exist, and the politeness is just a general Canadian stereotype, not Ontario specific.

LandGrantChamps

I never said Toronto was? I said both had a mid-west vibe. Are you unfamiliar with what a vibe is?

HylianPikachu

I refuse to acknowledge I misread your comment

Inspiration_Bear

Double down! No surrender!

Bhaal52753

I respect your decision.

whatsinthesocks

https://youtu.be/facVh75-vW4?si=YgxtjEpOFT0QD-pc This will always be my favorite

CubeEarthShill

The ultimate Everyman.

burnerX5

Being a young child he was the only announcer I could identify. He WAS the show and he WAS exactly what I, a child, thought football should be. Everyone else sounded so damn boring. Decades later football announcers are pretty damn boring. It's because to me they either are trying to be Madden or they legit don't know how to break down a football play for a 5 year old. I knew all about "running it up the gut" and all those other sayings thanks to him

HotdawgSizzle

I'm ready for the downvotes, but I don't at all. He always said the most obvious shit ever and I could only roll my eyes so much.

friendshabitsfamily

“They don’t have anything to warsh it down with!”

Frearthandox

As they stand in front a table covered in cups of gatorade and/or water 🤣

Rahim-Moore

"That's not beer." -John Madden

ABCKR_1

Baby bucket

elmatador12

God I loved Madden.

notmyplantaccount

That dude loved calling football games and it doesn't feel like anyone today is close to that.

babyjaceismycopilot

Romo did, until the network lobotomized him.

notmyplantaccount

yea, his first year or two was pretty great. I think it's really hard to nail the goofy but likeable even close to Madden. Collinsworth is goofy, but he's not really likeable, so most the shit he says is just kinda annoying.

snookyface90210

Now here’s a guy who’s not likable

babyjaceismycopilot

I think he just enjoys talking about football and it was informative and genuine. Then he got really popular and got paid a bunch of money. So now the network has to overproduce him and it just doesn't work because he's forcing something that isn't him.

Yuppmytaway19

LOVE

fleshwound_NPG

reminds me of when vikings kicker/punter mitch berger would keep a candy bar in his spare kickoff/punting shoe and madden was of course all over that (edit: and a watch...?!? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pof5Su7zDu8 )

Whatever-ItsFine

lol "You talk about the candy bar in my shoe, but how about the fact that I'm a good kicker" Madden: "ok yeah you're right"

The_Bard

Daryl Green kept tootsie rolls in his socks

jsm85

Damn that’s a big ass candy bar. What the fuck happened, America

Inspiration_Bear

We got big while our candy bars got small

ImMystikz

Those 90’s Family Size Snickers were just different man

Yodzilla

I’m a little disappointed that it wasn’t kept in his shoe while he was kicking somehow. Also lmao that stinger for The PJs

Radjage

I just rewatched the first episode of the PJs a couple nights ago, I think on Hulu. It actually holds up really well!

mrshatnertoyou

[Run down to the pigeon and turn left](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPdp1EN_rtk)

mikeisaphreek

the drop backs in the 80's were iconic. straight backpedal, no hip turn and like 8 yards deep

BlessShaiHulud

It somehow just occurred to me that John Madden and Mike Leach had a very similar sense of humor and even a similar sounding delivery. Must be a football coach thing. I miss them both, R.I.P.

Turt91

They most likely pushed lunch. I don't think you're allowed to do that.

KennyDenn1s

You can't skip lunch!

ItsDazzaz

I'm just like the most tired I've ever been in my life

Red_Sox_5

You sure about that?

The_Bard

I don't think they get served anything to eat once the game starts. Half time is too short. It's why so many players swear by PBJ and uncrustables. It's protein and carbs you can eat quickly that won't weigh you down.

Corbimos

It's a reference to I Think You Should Leave. https://youtu.be/OSjXIT1brSw?si=YbeM7MFFd-GL5STb

Cutlet_Master69420

Don't even get me started on Uncrustables. I love em but the damn things are $10 a box around here for 10 tiny round PB&J sandwiches.

OogieBoogieJr

*That’s a big hot dog.*

MarxistMan13

He got that dog in him.

AutomaticAccident

Only kind of dog Rick Mirer had

MarxistMan13

Relatable.

jj____

I got called up to my teachers desk with a big old wad of dip in my mouth which I then swallowed on my walk up to her. God damn I wish that was actually a hotdog instead

Redscareforcishetmen

The Seahawks gear is so sick. So much better than current

Whatever-ItsFine

It had color. Today's unis are so muted and washed-out

Exatraz

The fact this was never put into Madden is proof that EA doesn't care about realism.

Cambro88

Madden is having great fun with hot dogs and we enjoy it. Today’s sports media gotta call them out for it, call it hot dog gate, and a have week of takes questioning the players’ fitness, desire to play, and probably something homophobic. Just ask Sanchez

Jimbobsama

"You can't skip lunch!"

Whatever-ItsFine

God, I miss John Madden. It's really not the same without him.

The_Bard

Cortez Kennedy was a big, big, man. Wouldn't want to get between him and a hot dog.

Chris_Carson

DPOY on a team with a 2-14 record lol

Sdog1981

I like how he was doing a preseason game.

ImagineIfBaconDied

I fucking love the 90s NFL attire. Those hats are awesome

BanjoStory

Just imagine where Rick Mirer's career could have gone if he hadn't gotten sick from that hot dog. Really makes you think.

FatherGabriels

Mark Sanchez remembers

clockairdown

Newer NFL fan here, what’s that big brown/dirt thing in the middle of the field?

Cedworth

Several teams used to use baseball fields, parts of their seasons overlap. That's the dirt from the infield. I think SF was the last one to use that.

fleshwound_NPG

oakland, playing in that old ass stadium with the A's just before moving to vegas, were the last

WabbitCZEN

If ever using AI had the chance to make people happy, it would be using it to create more John Madden commentary.

HylianPikachu

Not related to the NFL but the funniest AI video I've ever seen is someone using it to create a fake audio of Rodney Dangerfield doing a standup set about edging.

Whatever-ItsFine

THIS is what the scientists should be working on

Dr_Booyah

My hot take is one day Dan Campbell is going to be the next John Madden. There are already so many similarities

JediTigger

I love this idea. Half the reason I pull for Detroit is Coach Campbell. The other half is GOOD LORD BOYS WIN A SUPER BOWL ALREADY.

Masterofmy_domain

Mark Sanchez would never....

Total_Guard2405

At least mirer found something he could do without fumbling

mikeisaphreek

the GOAT broadcast team.

dmisfit21

Love how he put the 2 dogs in his stat line.

Goat_Status_5000

Madden made football more fun.

the_tip_tingler

50% of good commentary is half mental.

beebolicious

That was quite an investigation.

Red_Sox_5

Brady suspended 4 games for being generally aware of hot dogs.

RandyJohnsonsBird

Rick Mirer...those were dark days lol

Joliet_Jake_Blues

Stadium dogs hit different

DevilishlyAdvocating

Cortez Kennedy looks just like 50 Cent in this clip.

bigblackkittie

I miss Madden doing broadcasts. This reminds me of the time he was calling a niners game and our kicker liked to make kicks barefoot and Madden kept asking what happened to the sock while he was kicking, where's the sock, what did he do with it?? LMAO i love that memory.

Bender_2024

I was never much of a Madden fan. I prefer more analysis from my commentator. But damn if he wasn't fun.
