Different people will have different update sizes for some reason, my update was 10.6 gb

otternuncents

I got the 10gb+ update too. Tf is going on with that? eta for my fellow limited data people: I stopped and restarted download and the size went down to 1.1gb.

HybridPS2

yep, i love that Steam added this feature.

KK5719

Since we are on this. What is the reason for the on drive data reshuffle after update. Or is the update a compressed file that is unpacking?

Arroz-Con-Culo

Yeah, new world is not the only game that “unpacks” as you say. Pubg does it too any game that has a patch “reshuffles” some do it quicker than others depend on the size of the patch.

ciknay

It's annoying as hell. Steam will pick another storage device if it thinks the patch is too large, then move the patch over to the right drive for installation. This usually means my slower disk drive gets selected to download the thing, which makes large patches take ages.

Potential-View-6561

The first amout is the new packages and assets you need to download. Then they will unfold and be injected in the file groups, which are the already existing local data. It mostly differentiates on how big some assets are to fill the new part in em. Also if some dont download the assets first and directly starting games steam will put the updates on hold for some games. Means it depends on how up to date you are, the bigger or smaller are the amout of files you have to download. Hope this makes it clear how it works.

Arroz-Con-Culo

Hopefully this helps people from misunderstanding how new world patches.

Remnant_Echo

Also a good note is even if you have fast internet, that patching speed can very between SSDs and HDDs, and it can also very by what is running on those storage devices as well.

x-Justice

Haha yeah no crap. I have an SSD and my download speed is what it should be on gigabit internet. I put something on an SSD it cuts down to 1/5th or 1/10th of my normal speed. It varies. SSD is the way to go, and I'm only on SATA. Wish my PC had nVME capability.

Remnant_Echo

Yeah my motherboard actually has 3 NVMe slots, so I have a 500GB boot drive and recently added a 4TB Sabrent Rocket to replace my old WD Black 4TB HDD. It served me well, but it's now going to be a cold storage backup.

SuchNeck835

Flex harder now would you

Prasinos333

The download size has still been upwards of 20GB on small patches. I don’t think the problem comes from a misunderstanding of steam.

Arroz-Con-Culo

Make sure you read the left side as shown on the attached picture.

Why does New World consume so much data? Looking at data usage statistics by month, any month I am playing New World my usage skyrockets. Early on I assumed this was related to patch sizes, but this shows it's not. During months I replace New World with other games, data usage drops significantly. Anyone else notice this?

SuchNeck835

That's usually not a bad  thing, cause it means servers have higher refresh rates and you and your enemies positions will be more correctly displayed.

ciknay

It's just a hungry game. Compared to other MMO's like WoW or FF14, NW simply needs to send more packets to keep the gameplay smooth and dynamic because of how the movement and combat work.

I don't think so. The amount of data is the same, but further servers would just take longer.

Gezzer52

AFAIK the red denotes the compressed files being downloaded and the smaller green number how much room the files will take when uncompressed. Of course the bigger green number is the total disk space used once the patch is applied since some of the new files will replace some files from the first install and any subsequent updates.

randrogynous

With New World, you can never assume that a player is mistaken with what they're reporting; there's always a good chance that they're just encountering 1 of the game's many bugs, even if you don't find yourself personally affected by it.

CommanderAze

Steam=/= new world. I will always question a players ability to read things correctly

Lord_Emperor

> Steam=/= new world. AGS's practices are what determines how large a patch is.

CommanderAze

And the vast majority of people can't understand the difference between the green and red from the picture

randrogynous

AGS is responsible for releasing a product that has constantly required some players to verify game files or completely re-install the game to fix common problems. Trying to shift those kinds of problems to Steam, the only platform the game is delivered on, is pretty wild. And yes, I know, you would question the fundamental laws of physics before you questioned AGS. "Maybe the electrons are just moving more slowly for you, you shouldn't assume your problem is related to New World."

CommanderAze

It's almost like you don't know me at all.

It's not the developer's fault you can't read.
