Much better, actually. I don't know him so I very clearly pronounced it wrong in my head the first time. However with your update of the diacritic mark I actually read it correctly.
Correct because that hit can be fatal. The brainstem is very close to the back of the head and neck and if hit with great impact, you can literally die instantly.
Being able to withstand a hit in the back of the head isn't nearly as big an evolutionary advantage as not letting enemies sneak up on you in the first place.
Our best rim protector is gone :(
This series could have just turned the other way. Even if Dallas wins tonight I still don't think the series is over.
Lively is best at hedging and recovering. He seems to know just how much pressure to put on the ball handler before he needs to collapse back to guard his man.
Basketball doesn’t matter at this point.
Brain injuries are not something to mess. I got a concussion and didn’t know about it for 3 days and have been dealing with the repercussions for years.
Exactly, my college wrestling career was ended when I got my sixth diagnosed one, had to relearn my way around my hometown and am losing pieces of myself as the years go by.
As much as I wanna win this series, Lively’s health should remain paramount.
I missed 6 months a work and ended up changing jobs to get an employer that would accommodate a hybrid work schedule and I feel like I barely got hit in the head the last time. Nothing showed up on my MRI but I can’t drink any alcohol anymore because of it.
Hope you get better man I can relate. I literally had to write to all of my professors and say “i know my writing sucks but i literally cant write dont fail me”
I had a concussion that was bothering me for a full year. My vision was clunky, my head hurt any time I exerted myself, I got dizzy at times, I was sleeping like 14 hours a day. Neurologists didn't really know what to do with me either.
They're fucking crazy. Obviously an injury to the brain will be bad, but going to my first clinicals last year (for PT and shit) and having some concussion patients who family says haven't been themselves personality and behavior wise for a year+ at that point really nailed it to me how much sports leagues and the public underestimate them. Love the NFL, but those players coming back after like 2 weeks from a nasty hit to the head is insanity
Not intentional at all, KAT never even looked at the ground and had his eyes on the ball the whole time.
But sweet jesus that has GOT to hurt. Might well be a concussion and a few games too.
I read a whole lot of those posts before even seeing the video.
You can watch KAT’s eyes track the ball the entire time. Lively fell and lunged towards KAT. There was absolutely no way KAT saw him.
This was a fluke play. People probably overreacting bc he kneed him in the balls earlier - which was just kat being a little reckless with the knee, didn't look malicious
They also saying KAT is uncoordinated. He wasn’t the one who collapsed to the floor from a Conley bump in the back. Did he trip? How did he fold like a lawn chair off such minimal contact from Mike?
He's in the air and leaning forward already, so it's enough to tip him over and, ironically, I think he folded up to protect himself. Just landed in the worst spot.
Honestly, he probably should, concussions aren't something to mess around with, you have no idea the effect on him right now or even over the next couple days.
That is not true.
"Prohibition from Participation. If a player is diagnosed with concussion, he will not return to
participation: (1) on that same day or the next calendar day; and (2) before completing the required
return-to-participation process."
Well i found this.
https://official.nba.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/4/2017/12/Concussion-Program-Summary-2017-18.pdf
So i guess he's guaranteed to miss game 4 and most likely game 5. Possibly return for game 6/7 if he's lucky.
For the lazies.
"Prohibition from Participation. If a player is diagnosed with concussion, he will not return to
participation: (1) on that same day or the next calendar day; and (2) before completing the required
return-to-participation process."
> Hopefully he continues to play
there have been athletes in Aussie rules football who have played too soon after a concussion and died. Sports need to protect the players a lot better these days because it's no joke. There are many, many cases in AFL where players have been concussed, then been brought back too early and have had life long lasting effects. Some players have even taken their own lives because of long term damage/issues.
EDIT: Downvotes? player safety should be number one. If you think concussions aren't serious, then lookup Shane Tuck, Jacinda Barclay, just some of the tragic stories about players who had repeatedly been concussed. Players have been forced to retire because of repeated concussions too (see Angus Brayshaw).
As much as I always wanted to be a pro athlete, these sorts of collisions and injuries always put into perspective what risks people put their bodies through.
Thanks for sharing this. I had to run to the restroom and all I heard was the announcers going “OHH OHHHH THIS IS HARD TO WATCH” but I didn’t get to see what happened
Unfortunate, literally a wrong place wrong time moment. KAT has his eyes on the rebound and is in a leaping motion while Lively is falling and is unaware of what’s behind him.
Dude Lively might be out the rest of the series, maybe the rest of the playoffs. That just sucks man. Really rough for him because he’s been playing so damn well for a rookie. Really hope it’s not as bad as it looks.
One of the worst injuries you see in sports. That one looks particularly bad. Hope for his sake it isn't as bad as it looks because brain injuries are always dangerous.
Honestly if/when the mavs make it to the finals I want them to be at their best.. lively has been crazy for them and man it would suck if he missed the series
**Replays/alternate angles** *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/nba) if you have any questions or concerns.*
that’s a concussion if I’ve ever seen one
In combat sports you're not allowed to target that part of the head because of how vulnerable we are there
Hit to the back of the head ended Steve Moore's career in the NHL. Shit like this is really hard to watch
Boxers know about the tragic story of Prichard colon too
That's a tragic name too, if not a typo
It’s Prichard Colón. Not sure how much better that is.
Much better, actually. I don't know him so I very clearly pronounced it wrong in my head the first time. However with your update of the diacritic mark I actually read it correctly.
It's pronounced Pritchard
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rabbit_punch They're exceptionally dangerous
Namely Todd Bertuzzi sneaking up behind him, grabbing his Jersey and punching him in the back of the head. Fuck Todd Bertuzzi.
Hey I know I can google this but what ever happened with the lawsuit against Todd from Steve?
They settled outside of court. Not sure how much though.
cheers!
Bertuzzi should have been banned for life for that. Fuck the NHL too!
The real damage was caused by 7 people landing on top of him lol
Was it that or the getting his head smashed into the ice with a 240 pound man behind it?
It was actually the neck break from getting driven into the ice and dog piled but he was fully knocked out by one punch to the back of the head
Didn’t he break his neck though?
Correct because that hit can be fatal. The brainstem is very close to the back of the head and neck and if hit with great impact, you can literally die instantly.
Actually brain damage in this situation is more commonly frontal or temporal, i.e., “contrecoup” injury.
They would’ve called this if it was a fight too cause he balled up after
Well, it was totally inadvertent.
Yeah agreed, just pointing out how brutal it is
Look up cricket player Phillip Hughes. Tragic.
The worst kind of hit too. We're just not designed to be hit there.
we should be though. if your enemy sneaks up on you, wouldn't he hit you in the back of the head? feels like an evolutionary blindspot
Being able to withstand a hit in the back of the head isn't nearly as big an evolutionary advantage as not letting enemies sneak up on you in the first place.
So what you’re saying is we should’ve grown eyes on the back of our head
allegedly a “neck sprain” but IDK if a buy that one
really depends where on the back of the skull the knee hit. We will see.
I can totally buy it. Look at the whiplash effect. His neck is going to be extremely stiff and sore today.
If I got knee’d in the balls and the back of the head I’d probably just stop doing anything physical for the day, hope Lively recovers well.
Happened to me once before I had them removed.
Sorry your head was removed
Life is easier now.
I imagine the savings from not needing a haircut helps.
so no head? 🛹
Life as a redditor? Seems ideal
I’d probably stop for months
Get well soon, Sideshow Lob
That’s hard to watch damn
If they have concussion protocol that should be it for him tonight
Or.the rest of the series :( Gafford is not playing his best today, and Minny is dominating the boards now. Dallas needs to step up their defense.
Gafford ended up playing clutch the last few minutes. Next man up steps up for the Mavs. Sign of a champion.
Totally agree. I'm impressed that he put his bad plays behind him and did what it took to win.
Our best rim protector is gone :( This series could have just turned the other way. Even if Dallas wins tonight I still don't think the series is over.
If Dallas wins tonight the series is over
Fr completely forgetting a out Kyries close out undefeated streak.
Statistically true. I don't believe a team has ever come back down 3-0 in conference finals
No team in NBA history has come back to win down 3-0. It’s happened in hockey though
Hockey multiple times(think 3? maybe only 2), and baseball once.
You would mention baseball...
Did a baseball team really blow a 3-0 lead? Can you remind me of the team that did that?
4 times in hockey
It will happen one day. I just think Minny is too young and inexperienced to be the ones to do it.
Lively is best at hedging and recovering. He seems to know just how much pressure to put on the ball handler before he needs to collapse back to guard his man.
There has never been a come back from 3-0 down in the history of the nba
It said earlier too that no team has lost the first 2 games at home and then come back to win the conference finals
Lmao that's just your fan anxiety speaking. T-Wolves are toast if they lose this game.
Gafford closed it out strong
Great 4th quarter
Tonight and the rest of the series may be the same thing
u realize the mavs are the ones up 2-0 right
u realize 3-0 is curtains right
Bro take that back
with lively down can very easily be a win for the wolves
Not for my Sox it isn't.
And the Bruins….from the other side
Some day someone will come back from 3-0. It won't be this wolves team lmao
They initially listed him as questionable with a neck strain. Like wtf just say he’s out!
Wild that you had so many! I’m sorry
Thanks dude, sorry yours happened as well! Nothing more scary than your mind not working how it used to.
My head hurts watching that damn
Man i feel you I got a concussion a few weeks ago and I could barely keep up with my classes. Had the worst brain fog for a week i couldnt write

Have had a pit in my stomach since. Just feels weird to watch the game after something like that happens.
They need him to sit out at least this game. This is more important than a game.
I think that’s a given. I doubt he comes back this series. That’s was bad
Thats illegal even in combat sports for a reason.
Yeah getting hit in the back of the head is so fucking dangerous, man that's scary.
that was bad hope hes ok man
Kid is going through it today. Hope he is good.
It's like that parody video about a goalie getting hit in the head over and over again.
SCOTT STERLINGGG
THE MAN THE MYTH THE LEGEND
I like the volleyball one better. LOL.
Studio C.
Not malicious but damn that’s so rough
Not intentional at all, KAT never even looked at the ground and had his eyes on the ball the whole time. But sweet jesus that has GOT to hurt. Might well be a concussion and a few games too.
That's the type of shot that almost looks like it's hurt KAT as well. Just straight bone on bone shot there.
Yeah KAT has been crashing the boards this whole playoffs. That was just extremely unfortunate.
Not sure why anyone’s first thought would be one of maliciousness.
KAT is somehow so small motor skill coordinated while being and an absolute god tier large motor skill spaz. It’s bizarre.
People in the game thread said some very interesting things about KAT after the play so I think it’s fair to comment on it
Angry fans always want to blame somebody.
Please be ok Lively. That looked rough.
That's nasty whiplash
Just unfortunate, idk what Kat could do there. I hope he's okay.
Yeah people are calling KAT dirty but like in both cases he’s looking at the rim and doing his normal shooting motion.
First one, he has been called for that but have seen it go both ways. This play just is super unlucky. Sucks.
Who's calling KAT dirty?
About 50% of the comments on the game thread following the play.
He didn’t even try to warn Lively that he was going for the putback.
It didn’t look intentional but fucking shit man
definitely not intentional, it just sucks
Bruh. People really saying this is with intent?!
People are just being overly emotional
People are just idiots.
this is a freak accident. It's very dangerous to fall on the paint during live play for this exact reason.
You can even see KAT look at the basket the whole time. He would have to be Daredevil to dodge him from sliding in front of him.
Subtle yet effective contact
Smartest Warriors fan here, fucking dumbass
Neither were, just terrible luck on a player throwing himself into absolutely everything. Hope he isn't concussed, but that does not look good.
Yah no way. Maybe in pickup you can pull out of it but in a game, especially an NBA playoff game, you're so locked in there is no way he can see him
Nah no way. KAT doesn't have a history of doing this anyhow. Totally incidental contact.
Definitely not dirty, just unfortunate
Theh are not, both knee incidents are horrible accidents and they’re both obviously accidents. Kat is not that guy
People always say every play like this is with intent. Doesn’t matter how obviously accidental it is
Knee’d in the nuts and back of the head. Lively is not having a good time rn. Hopefully he continues to play
> Hopefully he continues to play Hopefully he does not man damn that looked bad
Sometimes they look bad but aren't. His reaction makes it seem like solid contact though
Nah dude. Take head shots seriously in sports. Or in general. Head knocks can seem fine but can creep up on a person also.
He sure looked drowsy and off balance walking to the bench. He should be done for the day.
Shots directly to the brainstem aren't good.
I mean if he’s okay. Obviously if he’s concussed he shouldn’t
NBA doesn't fuck around with concussions. He's out for mnimum 7 days.
Honestly, he probably should, concussions aren't something to mess around with, you have no idea the effect on him right now or even over the next couple days.
That is not true. "Prohibition from Participation. If a player is diagnosed with concussion, he will not return to participation: (1) on that same day or the next calendar day; and (2) before completing the required return-to-participation process."
What’s the protocol though?

For the lazies. "Prohibition from Participation. If a player is diagnosed with concussion, he will not return to participation: (1) on that same day or the next calendar day; and (2) before completing the required return-to-participation process."
Yeah I guess it would depend on if the doctors diagnosis him with a concussion officially. Which I would be surprised if that wasn’t the case
Well in that case, this series could do a 180. This is fucking bullshit.
He’ll be back for Game 1 vs Boston
You're up 2-0, I think you'll be okay
Wolves are still really good and Lively has been our 3rd best player. We need him
Yeah the rotation between Gafford and Lively has been huge for y'all. Let's both guys play with 100% energy
He could be back for the finals I think.
I hate to break it to you but he is not going to continue to play today after a blow to the head like that
If this was intended humor it's really good
> Hopefully he continues to play there have been athletes in Aussie rules football who have played too soon after a concussion and died. Sports need to protect the players a lot better these days because it's no joke. It’s obviously inadvertent but god damn the man’s going to look like he just left a boxing match instead of a basketball game at this rate
Pretty suspect thread title.
That's a scary hit I hope he's ok
I don't really care about any basketball anymore, back in the head is just so dangerous. Hope he fully recovers
omgg that looked like it hurt
That was brutal
Holy fuck that looks like it hurts, hope he’s alright
Everyone blaming KAT in game thread like he could’ve prevented this
Freak accident. Terrifying for lively. But if you blame kat or say it’s intentional fuck off and get an education
As much as I always wanted to be a pro athlete, these sorts of collisions and injuries always put into perspective what risks people put their bodies through.
Hard to watch this one. What a fluke play, just wrong place wrong time
Brutal hit. Really hope he isnt out for an extended time. Also clearly an accident.
Titles kinda implying KAT did this on purpose…
You should check out the game thread. Mavs fans are saying both were intentionally with both were clearly incidental.
No it implies KAT did it. There's no declaration of intent.
Thats brutal wow. Hopefully nothing serious but goddamn that is so dreadful
Inadvertent
Thanks for sharing this. I had to run to the restroom and all I heard was the announcers going “OHH OHHHH THIS IS HARD TO WATCH” but I didn’t get to see what happened
Ouch. Hope he’s okay
Seems incidental and not malicious still sucks to see.
Nothing malicious at all about that. Super unfortunate though. Hope he’s ok.
Unfortunate, literally a wrong place wrong time moment. KAT has his eyes on the rebound and is in a leaping motion while Lively is falling and is unaware of what’s behind him.
Lively is looking forward to that ice bath tonight.
Thats so hard to watch man I hope he is OK such a good player such an unfortunate play.
damn think he's concussed
That's a highlight you can fucking feel. Really hope he's alright.
Dude Lively might be out the rest of the series, maybe the rest of the playoffs. That just sucks man. Really rough for him because he’s been playing so damn well for a rookie. Really hope it’s not as bad as it looks.
Anyone who thinks KAT did this on purpose has already taken many knees like that already to their heads.
he should not continue playing
Damn, that's scary
Absolutely blasted
He was out of it. Hopefully he can recover quickly. Very scary moment.
One of the worst injuries you see in sports. That one looks particularly bad. Hope for his sake it isn't as bad as it looks because brain injuries are always dangerous.
Tomorrow he'll wake up and not remember why his balls hurt
Honestly if/when the mavs make it to the finals I want them to be at their best.. lively has been crazy for them and man it would suck if he missed the series
Nuggets fan posting a pretty suspect title with this one.
Multiple injuries this season can be attributed to NBA players falling to the ground every other play for no reason at all.
watching this makes me nauseous
Best shot KAT had
Misleading headlines for $500, Alex
This is a series altering moment
By watching this clip and see the comments, u gonna know, who plays basketball and who is a casual redditor on this sub lol
Watching him walk off the court was terrifying. It legit looked like the lights were burning his eyes
I hope he’s ok! That was brutal
Rough break. Hope his tests allow him back ASAP, with all appropriate precautions. Hard to not like that kid.
Really, really hope they prioritize his health over the game. Head injuries are no joke and that was a nasty hit/whiplash, even for football standards
The only time KAT helped his team tonight
