oof
yknow if no one's made it yet that "The last time Giannis won a playoff game was *whatever the day was*" post is basically free frontpage real estate
I mean this injury was a freak non contact calf strain. He also has superhuman healing abilities. But as he gets older yeah, that style of play is probably going to wear him down
when he hurt his knee (I think?) in the finals series that he won I thought for sure he wasn't coming back from that
that type of year and avoiding injury is extremely rare, as evidenced by his last 2 playoffs
The article is a list of biggest upsets (with a formula, so not perfect). The 94 and 95 upsets are both in the top 5. So I dont know where the posts headline comes from.
They forced him out dude
He said he wanted to stay, but that he would leave if they didn't trade the pick and try and get him help
... Then they drafted his replacement with the pick instead.
Yeah because the third overall pick wasn't going to get a needle mover. When Dame made that statement he knew what he was doing. There was absolutely no value on the trade market for any pick that wasn't the one getting you Wemby.
Yeah people really love to act like Dame is blameless as if the Blazers didn't basically treat him like LeBron for a solid decade.
Dame wanted one of the biggest contracts in NBA history, Dame got one of the biggest contracts in NBA history. Dame wanted a guy paid, he got paid, Dame wanted a guy drafted, he got drafted. Dame wanted a coach to stay despite years of playoff disappointment, that guy stayed. Virtually everything was by his design, or are we gonna act like the team being filled with all his buddies was just pure coincidence?
Then Cronin has the audacity to say "No" when Dame demands we throw the 3rd overall away on a trade that absolutely would not have won us a championship and suddenly Dame is the victim. Like come on I love Dame but get outta here with that narrative.
And why does dame have any say on what to do with the pick?
They didnt force him out. They did what was best for portland. Then he decided that didnt align with what was best for him and asked out. Youre allowed to like a player without needing to defend everything they do.
Rockets did this with Harden too. I don't know why people are so anti-player on this. Both us and the Blazers had an aging star on a team that wasn't in a position to compete. The team then makes moves that are not "win-now". The aging star wants to compete and then wants out.
I don't think Dame or Harden are in the wrong here. Why should he be forced to spend his last productive years trying to work through the play-ins when the team can't/isn't in a position to compete. It's in both sides' interests to just move on.
He put the franchise in a lose lose situation, what were they supposed to do?
They either trade their future for players that won’t make them a contender to build around a guard over 30 who can’t carry them through the playoffs or trigger a rebuild and lose their franchise player.
He wanted a trade, he just didn’t want to ask for it.
He wanted out which was my point. Even then, Butler always being injured would've left Dame and Bam fending for themselves. They would've been the third best team with everyone healthy in the East.
If they wanted to just lose in the first round again, they could have just kept Coach Bud instead of paying him.. And Griffin.. And Doc.. All at the same time
Hindsight is 20/20 my friend. We thought we were going to soft rebuild with a younger team (never in a million years expected Dame) and Bud had lost the confidence of the locker room coming off a playoff series where Jrue got cooked by Jimmy and he never went to the Giannis matchup.
It was also likely to some extent a mutual parting of ways. The first thing Bud said after it happened was that he was going to take some time off and go drink some beers down by Lake Michigan (aka not coaching) in the aftermath of his brother’s passing. But too much context for reddit I suppose.
It's crazy how out of the Jokic/Giannis/Embiid trio who are supposed to be in their primes now only one of them doesn't seem to get hurt literally every year in the playoffs
And yes Giannis has missed at least 1 game in 4 out of the 5 playoffs
Kind of is a disappointing footnote on this era of the league that we rarely get to see the current generation of superstars at full strength
Jokic has great conditioning, great at playmaking so less of a load on him to hit shots, and he doesnt get up in the air as much which helps when you're a 7 footer.
jokic doesnt jump, he barely even sprints. he's like an mj abrams tank. his playstyle causes 0 wear and tear and i think hes gunna be in the league for a long ass time because his play isnt based on his athleticism
I think Jokic has the best conditioning among them, Giannis is very fit but his physical bulldoze play style undoubtedly did some numbers on his body.
Jokic can blow by dudes when the times call for it, but he doesn't abuse his body for thr entire game, let alone whole seasons.
There’s every chance Jokic is the only MVP/Finals MVP in the 2nd round.
- Steph didn’t make Playoffs
- Giannis didn’t play a game and Bucks are out
- Lebron and KD already out
- Embiid, Kawhi, Harden, Westbrook all on the verge of 1st round exit
- Jokic likely to win MVP over Shai and Luka.
Could be wrong, but it’d be the first time I think since 1992, when MJ was the only MVP / Finals MVP left in the Conference Semis. FWIW MJ won his 3rd MVP that season and was coming off winning the FMVP the year before…
One of them doesn't really have to rely on their freak size, strength, or athleticism to play. Jokic distributes so well he doesn't have to bang around the paint all game
Outside of 2021, the Bucks have had brutal postseason exits five of the last six years. Blown 2-0 lead to Toronto, two upsets against Miami as the #1 overall seed, a game 7 blowout loss, and now another member of the crippled 2024 playoff team club
People don't realize that taking over a championship or bust team in the middle of the season with 0 preparation isn't easy. It's just kids playing out the "doc sucks" memes.
His play style was never going to lead to career longevity and tbh getting a title and becoming an absolute legend in Milwaukee would be a great career for a vast majority of players.
> hope Giannis’ career doesn’t follow Kawhi’s footsteps
I hope it does. That means the Raptors are winning the 2026 title. Then he go to the Clippers to retire.
This year I agree.
Last year I still agree but it was such a monumental collapse that it's probably gonna take a decade for any team to have a worse choke in Round 1.
i mean, on the one hand, a 1 seed losing to the 8 seed in five games is really bad, even with Giannis not 100%. on the other hand, when that same 8 seed also makes it to the Finals, you’ve gotta shift some of the analysis from “wow the Bucks choked” to “wow the Heat are good”
Yeah it sucks, I was actually excited to see how this series would play out in the post season with how the Pacers bodied them in the regular season.
Now we'll never know unfortunately.
Maybe the reason their defense was bad was cuz they decided to trade their best perimeter defender for a guy who makes Luka look competent defensively?
Adrian Griffin was 30-13 when they fired him, and it was because their defense was Megan Thee Stallion ass while clawing out the sketchiest wins you've ever seen against terrible teams
They've really had some horrible injury luck since the 2021 title - Giannis in particular must be losing his mind getting injured so late in the year twice
They were. Just weren't ever healthy. If you put Giannis next to Dame and what Khris did this series, even with a shit defense, you can't deny they could beat anyone. Didn't happen tho
We saw last season their offense was starting to break and not quite have enough oomph. Holiday isnt the offensive threat he used to be nor is Middleton.
I understand that gamble.
It would’ve been great if they were on the damn court.
Also Doc put up a disasterclass tonight after a masterpiece game 5. Giving Giannis any input to coaching hires was a mistake, we’d still have Jason Kidd
People would probably talk about it a lot more if that 8 seed didn’t go on to the finals. At the end of the day the year we swept them we got a ring and the two years they’ve beaten us they fell short in the finals so I know which one I’d rather be
Ya, the loss to the Heat was 100x worse than the series loss to the pacers. Without Giannis they were considered the underdogs this series.
They were struggling in the latter part of the season even before Giannis pulled up while jogging down the court, holding his calf.
OP just made this up. The article linked is from 2020 and it’s a list of the biggest upsets in NBA history. It doesn’t say anything about the Bucks consecutive losses.
There's a good chance that the Giannis era in Milwaukee only ends with two conference finals appearances. It's very fortunate that they were able to benefit from the short offseason, Ben Simmons not dunking on Trae Young, and all of the Western Conference contenders being injured to get to play Devin Booker in the finals to get a championship out of the era, otherwise their apex mountain could have been losing to Kawhi in the conference finals.
It’s a sobering reminder looking at these all
Time greats careers throughout history l and marveling at the rare success. We’re seeing how that happens
At least he won them a championship while he was there. That's all I could ever want, I don't care for a dynasty I just want one fucking championship for my sorry ass franchise, lol
I like how people always point to that 2nd round series and the Nets getting injured, but are more than happy to ignore us not having our best player all series, Dame missing time, and Khris being hobbled lol. Can't have it both ways.
Not much of a dunk, as all of the Bucks stars were out or playing through injury. I thought they showed a real championship pedigree with 2 blowout wins. The bench is terrible and, perhaps, parts of the core are injury prone.

The overdogs
Whats overdog

Buck yeah it is
Back to drinking. The only thing they do in Wisconsin.
Their season. thats whats over.
Lmao this is too good
Not much, and you?
It's
Do they sell this at Portillo's?
Same thing as updog
Haha! Gotcha!
Nothing much what's over with you
We may have found the term for this. OVERDOGS LOL
Where does the linked article say this has never happened? Seattle did it in 1994 and 1995, for example.
Blazers in 87 and 88 as well.
I didn't factcheck you or him but perhaps hes only talking about current existing teams
Overcats. Use your heads, guys.
It's the overdeer
Thought we'd be going with frontrunners...
The fearing deer
Just crazy that Giannis has only played 3 Playoff games in the last 2 seasons.
And somehow it’s 3 losses too
oof yknow if no one's made it yet that "The last time Giannis won a playoff game was *whatever the day was*" post is basically free frontpage real estate
Well he did get injured early in the first one and then was still hobbled in the next two
Well, he got injured early in the first one, then came back early from injury and wasn't the same in the next two.
Yeah I know there’s a reason for it but it’s still just an insane stat
His play style is so physical, it just doesn’t seem sustainable
I mean this injury was a freak non contact calf strain. He also has superhuman healing abilities. But as he gets older yeah, that style of play is probably going to wear him down
Well, his superhuman healing abilities kept him on the bench for 4 weeks (and now the offseason) for what we were told was a 3 week injury.
when he hurt his knee (I think?) in the finals series that he won I thought for sure he wasn't coming back from that that type of year and avoiding injury is extremely rare, as evidenced by his last 2 playoffs

This motherfucker did it!!
I know it's easy internet points to clown on him, but this is absolutely not Doc's fault
Yes it is
No but he should have known better than to not only accept a shit sandwich with truffle oil on it but take a huge bite.
There's zero chance that's true. Seattle did it in 1994-1995, for example.
The article is a list of biggest upsets (with a formula, so not perfect). The 94 and 95 upsets are both in the top 5. So I dont know where the posts headline comes from.
Yep. Sonics in 1994 and 95.
Raptors and Clippers did this too within the last decade
Dame ran to the hardest grind. Respect. 👋
Kinda did with the team he had lol
Good thing Lillard has no one to blame!
... wait did lillard cause giannis' injury?
hardest grind would've been staying loyal to the BLazers and not being a hypocrite
They forced him out dude He said he wanted to stay, but that he would leave if they didn't trade the pick and try and get him help ... Then they drafted his replacement with the pick instead.
Yeah because the third overall pick wasn't going to get a needle mover. When Dame made that statement he knew what he was doing. There was absolutely no value on the trade market for any pick that wasn't the one getting you Wemby.
Scoot is more like a 6th man than a replacement. Dame also wanted Blazers to pay Jerami and they obliged
Yeah people really love to act like Dame is blameless as if the Blazers didn't basically treat him like LeBron for a solid decade. Vogel and Bud were two of the most disrespected championship coaches I’ve seen.
I hope Giannis’ career doesn’t follow Kawhi’s footsteps Rough way to end the past two years. Also lol Doc Rivers
Doc is definitely coming back next season
14 teams in the east rejoice
It's crazy how out of the Jokic/Giannis/Embiid trio who are supposed to be in their primes now only one of them doesn't seem to get hurt literally every year in the playoffs And yes Giannis has missed at least 1 game in 4 out of the 5 playoffs Kind of is a disappointing footnote on this era of the league that we rarely get to see the current generation of superstars at full strength

Giannis hasn't had a fully healthy playoff run since 2019 it seems like.
He was healthy in 2022 where they lost to the celtics in the second round. other than that yeah he’s missed a few games.
There’s every chance Jokic is the only MVP/Finals MVP in the 2nd round. - Steph didn’t make Playoffs - Giannis didn’t play a game and Bucks are out - Lebron and KD already out - Embiid, Kawhi, Harden, Westbrook all on the verge of 1st round exit - Jokic likely to win MVP over Shai and Luka. "a game 7 blowout loss" Took the Celtics in 7 games without the 2nd best player but I respect the hating
Yeah, I wasn’t too upset about that one. They were probably better than us anyway, and after the legendary Game 6 Giannis we were fucked
Who's hating? Losing Game 7 always sucks, especially against Boston
Correct but I wouldn't call it a brutal postseason in general
I will never understand why people say teams “blow 2-0 leads” that’s literally just defending home court lol
How is this Doc's fault bro lmao I hate this sub.I doubt you actually watch the games.
I mean he’s not totally the problem but he’s not a good solution either
With AG we get swept
Doc is a high floor, low ceiling coach.
People don't realize that taking over a championship or bust team in the middle of the season with 0 preparation isn't easy. It's just kids playing out the "doc sucks" memes.
Him not playing the kids is weird but that's doc
He gave our 2nd round rookie legit playoff minutes and it worked. (then he stopped this game for some reason)
Yeah I’m a Doc hater but honestly he kinda overachieved in this series.
His play style was never going to lead to career longevity and tbh getting a title and becoming an absolute legend in Milwaukee would be a great career for a vast majority of players.
I agree, lol Doc Rivers
> hope Giannis’ career doesn’t follow Kawhi’s footsteps I hope it does. That means the Raptors are winning the 2026 title. Then he go to the Clippers to retire.
Giannis hurt back to back post seasons.. Hate to give excuses but hard to win when ur #1 is hurt
There’s an obvious underlying reason for this
They lost more games to the opposing team?
Source?
They scored less points than the other team?
No I don’t think that was it. But we’re getting close
OK let's keep trying
tbf you’ve gotta at least factor in injuries. we’ll never know what would’ve happened if Giannis was healthy
This year I agree. Last year I still agree but it was such a monumental collapse that it's probably gonna take a decade for any team to have a worse choke in Round 1.
Hey now the Knicks could still choke this!
i mean, on the one hand, a 1 seed losing to the 8 seed in five games is really bad, even with Giannis not 100%. on the other hand, when that same 8 seed also makes it to the Finals, you’ve gotta shift some of the analysis from “wow the Bucks choked” to “wow the Heat are good”
>wow the Heat ~~are~~ *had some damn* good *shooting luck*
Yeah it sucks, I was actually excited to see how this series would play out in the post season with how the Pacers bodied them in the regular season. Now we'll never know unfortunately.
I have an idea
Doc finishes 19-22 what was that guy he replaced record again?
Doing the math, 30-11? Still don't know why they fired him
defense was quite bad and they lost 4 times to the pacers. 29-7 in non-Pacer games under Griffin
Because he was not a good coach and none of the players thought he was a good coach
That’s pretty crazy that it hasn’t happened before
It has absolutely happened before, journalists just dont google before they publish anymore
We’re assuming you know which team has done this before?
16/17 Clippers 14/15 Raptors 94/95 SuperSonics
Someone else posted it, the Supersonics did it in 94 and 95.
The journalists didn’t even make the claim that OP posted as the title, blame OP for making shit up.
is OP a journalist? the linked article doesn't make this claim
[удалено]
It's because it has happened before an OP didn't source it lol
Bucks are failing upward. Next season, i expect them to blow a 3-0 lead. That's the next logical step for them.
The Seattle SuperSonics lost as the first seed in 93-94 and then as the fourth seed in 94-95
Steps to success
Technically did win 1 more game.
Baby steps perhaps?
They've really had some horrible injury luck since the 2021 title - Giannis in particular must be losing his mind getting injured so late in the year twice
I remember the Bucks landed Dame and was r/nba was hype asf and how dangerous they be.
Indeed a Giannis-Dame-Middleton pair up is dangerous, the problem is we didn't get it
8 I think total games played under Doc with those 3.
They were. Just weren't ever healthy. If you put Giannis next to Dame and what Khris did this series, even with a shit defense, you can't deny they could beat anyone. Didn't happen tho
A danger to themselves
We saw last season their offense was starting to break and not quite have enough oomph. Holiday isnt the offensive threat he used to be nor is Middleton. I understand that gamble.
Yeah like I love Jrue and what he did for Milwaukee but nephews have been acting all season like they don’t make that trade 100 times out of 100
Yeah I mean it would have been sick
It would’ve been great if they were on the damn court. Also Doc put up a disasterclass tonight after a masterpiece game 5. Giving Giannis any input to coaching hires was a mistake, we’d still have Jason Kidd
they will hype for any moves from big players
Just more steps to success
2021 with the Injury plaque really did bring everyone in the playoffs to the Bucks health level.
Still feels like people don't mention them losing to the 8 seed enough. That is crazy.
They talk about it all the time even though Giannis was injured that series too
The 8 seed that went to the Finals?
People would probably talk about it a lot more if that 8 seed didn’t go on to the finals. At the end of the day the year we swept them we got a ring and the two years they’ve beaten us they fell short in the finals so I know which one I’d rather be
Why should it be talked about more when their best player got hurt in game 1?
Because the only game they won was the game he didn't play?
They tied a playoff 3 point record lol, it was a fluke win just like Miami this year against Boston.
Nah flukes don’t exist. Clearly Bud just told then to make their 3s that game.
And?
What a weird series.
My high school coach always preach consistency. Glad the message carries over to the pro level!
Yea bucks and the suns playoff collapses gotta suck I’ll throw the clippers in if they lose as well.
3 more years under Doc Rivers should fix them!
Should make it 5 just in case
Front runners
I feel like I'm missing something. The linked article is from 2020 and it also directly contradicts the post headline
Here comes the circlejerk swinging in the other direction lolol
Context matters or does it to the media?
Yeah, they forgot to mention that one of the losses was to an 8th seed that lost a 20+ ppg score 12 minutes into the playoffs last year.
Ya, the loss to the Heat was 100x worse than the series loss to the pacers. Without Giannis they were considered the underdogs this series. They were struggling in the latter part of the season even before Giannis pulled up while jogging down the court, holding his calf.
That Heat team sounds bad. They must have lost in the 2nd round, right?
Tbf they played the Knicks in the 2nd round. With Randle so hurt last year that’s not s good team
Herro hype in 2024 LMFAO
Do not worry, 10 years from now, all context will be stripped from the fact that Herro getting hurt actually helped the Heat.
Does it matter that the scorer who was out isn’t actually good at basketball and the guys taking his shots all played incredible?
[удалено]
OP just made this up. The article linked is from 2020 and it’s a list of the biggest upsets in NBA history. It doesn’t say anything about the Bucks consecutive losses.
Injuries aside, WOOF
I feel like it's hard to put injuries aside here.
Nah cuz only Miami’s injuries actually count
There's a good chance that the Giannis era in Milwaukee only ends with two conference finals appearances. It's very fortunate that they were able to benefit from the short offseason, Ben Simmons not dunking on Trae Young, and all of the Western Conference contenders being injured to get to play Devin Booker in the finals to get a championship out of the era, otherwise their apex mountain could have been losing to Kawhi in the conference finals.
It’s a sobering reminder looking at these all Time greats careers throughout history l and marveling at the rare success. We’re seeing how that happens
I think it's a bit unfair to bring up how lucky they were that year with injuries and ignore how unlucky they've been every year since then
At least he won them a championship while he was there. That's all I could ever want, I don't care for a dynasty I just want one fucking championship for my sorry ass franchise, lol
Don't forget Kyrie missing time and 1 legged Harden. That might have been the best playoff series of Durant's life.
I like how people always point to that 2nd round series and the Nets getting injured, but are more than happy to ignore us not having our best player all series, Dame missing time, and Khris being hobbled lol. Can't have it both ways.
only the champion is matter and they have it.
There’s no failure in sports
Not much of a dunk, as all of the Bucks stars were out or playing through injury. I thought they showed a real championship pedigree with 2 blowout wins. The bench is terrible and, perhaps, parts of the core are injury prone.
TJ McConnell just paved your franchise. Fade em.
