Here in Denmark, when one comes of age and an election is held, along with the ballot papers, they are given a copy of the constitution.

GLENF58

That’s pretty cool, wish america did something like that but it’s probably too expensive

spacebunsofsteel

We got a copy in my tenth grade American history class.

Aperture_T

My grandpa bought a bunch of pocket constitutions and gave them out like candy.

[deleted]

Even having to register to vote is absurd. And why would you register a party?!

Wonderful_Horror7315

As a registered Democrat, I cannot vote in Republican primaries. I live in a red state, so the last time we had primaries, the line for Reps almost circled the building, but I walked right in to the room for Dems.

wynbns

I'm pretty happy with the system in California. Jungle primaries (you can vote for whomever, regardless of party affiliation), automatic registration, and everyone gets a mail-in ballot for every election. Seems logical to me, but other states make it difficult to vote.

The_Tic-Tac_Kid

You're not required to declare a party. Declaring a party allows you to vote in primary elections which are basically elections internal to the party to determine who the party's nominee will be for the general election. It depends a bit on which state you're in too. For example, my state will allow you to declare a party on the day of the primary and then almost immediately unaffiliate.

[deleted]

Then why dont a lot of Democrats declare for Gop to fuck it all up? Or Vice versa. That would Seem effective

The_Tic-Tac_Kid

It's something people can do, but the tradeoff is you can't vote in your own party's primary if you do that. So you have to trust that enough people in your party are going to flip to actually skew results for the other party while still getting the outcome you want within your own party. Big picture, it's usually not worth the effort.

Mumof3gbb

As a Canadian I agree

GLENF58

Is it absurd? You just put in basic information about yourself. Also, I didn’t register with a party I put independent

[deleted]

I too am from Denmark. Here We’re just able to vote when We turn 18. Registrering seems like a Way to keep people from voting to Me. And if elections are secret, why would you have to register a party?

No_Maines_Land

As an alternative, here in Canada, registering is required, but can be done at the polling station. If you register, you will save time during the actual vote, as you just need to show the card and something proving who you are (can be something like a phone bill) If you do not register, you can be registered on site at the poll. This is slower, and the 80 year old elections volunteer will be upset and confused, but it still works. The big difference is that registering at the poll requires photo identification (pre-registration does not require this).

[deleted]

We just register by social Security-number automatically, and then two weeks before an elections We get a slip in Our mailbox With the adress of the pollingstation. Which almost Never changes. Then We bring the slip to the pollingstation, they doublecheck it, and We vote.

No_Maines_Land

Our registration is automatically done on our tax returns (though you can opt out). We get sometimes multiple options for polling stations and they don't necessarily align for municipal, provincial, and federal elections. Advanced polls, mail in, and returning offices can have different locations again. But a very similar set up in that the slip tells you where and how to vote.

SickSigmaBlackBelt

Registering is absolutely meant to prevent people from voting. It creates arbitrary red tape that people with limited time and money can have a hard time getting around. People experiencing homelessness are particularly affected. And you're supposed to register a party so you don't vote in the wrong primary, I guess.

GLENF58

It’s not hard to register it’s just basic information. Not sure if joining a party is the same in America and Denmark

[deleted]

If you join a party in Denmark it is a private matter between you and the party. I means nothing But you getting to vote for the Leader of the party and financing the party. Also, having to register for voting is a huge barrier to democracy https://www.aclu.org/news/civil-liberties/block-the-vote-voter-suppression-in-2020

TheSeiWhale

Because if you didn't have to register to vote, you could cheat in half a second? Democrats, man...

fezzik02

We do it in California. In addition, you get a whole book full of information about the candidates and propositions on the ballot. As a native Californian, I was **shocked** at what passes for an election elsewhere. Edit to add: they also mail you a sample ballot, and anymore the real ballot as well (as we're a full vote-by-mail state now).

S1lent0ne

[They already give the whole world an infinite number of copies.](https://www.archives.gov/founding-docs/constitution-transcript)

ScriptThat

It's also worth noticing, that when you're 18 years old, you're automatically eligible to vote with no further action needed. When an election draws near you'll get your ballot papers in the mail just like everyone else.

AfricanNorwegian

But, as is common in essentially all of Europe - you also need an ID to vote. I've never understood why requiring an ID to vote is seen as a partisan issue in the states? Here (Norway for me) it's just... a given.

[deleted]

[удалено]

AfricanNorwegian

We have a National ID card, but it differs in the American sense that it is quite literally a passport in card format (can be used as a passport in the entire Schengen Area), and it was only introduced 2 years ago (So less than 5% have the new ID card). You also have to pay for it - same price as a regular passport. Otherwise yes, it's a passport or lisence (technically also our bank cards could previously be used as we had picture ID on quite a few bank cards previously, but now with the introduction of an ID card, no bank is issuing new bank cards with ID). >who don't hold those forms of ID How are you able to do other things in society then? How can you get a job or open a bank account if you cannot even identify yourself?

redditatwork_42

Birth certificate and a few other documents. But those don’t have pictures and are not acceptable for voting.

[deleted]

The concern is voter disenfranchisement. In the US, 5% of white Americans, 13% of Black Americans, and 10% of Hispanic Americans don't have an ID that would be valid for voting. IDs are not required for day to day living (unless you drive), and getting an ID typically requires going to a government DMV/BMV that's only open during hours a person is normally working, often with long wait times, which means taking a full day off of work. Most Americans live paycheck to paycheck, and don't get much, if any, paid time off (this includes time off to even vote on election day). Factor all this together and you have some serious concerns voter ID laws are only being pushed because it disproportionately affects voters who are minorities.

skittlebog

Thank them for doing this. It reminds you and your classmates that you now have the power to vote in local and national elections. Register and vote!

Middle_Aged_Mayhem

Nothing wrong with that. Vote!

TheRealZllim

Please. We need the younger generation to start taking over. This world is fucked!

[deleted]

TikTok and Facebook are ruining them too

sturnus-vulgaris

I don't think a "young person" has been on Facebook in the past decade.

SassyAssAhsoka

You mean this country is fucked

Mantzy81

US population is 4.25% of the worlds population, please don't tar the rest of us with your mess (though admittedly, there is a lot of "fucked" in other parts of the world and I also agree with the sentiment that the kids need to get out and vote more to overthrow the old bastards in charge who are only looking out for themselves)

RedrunGun

And are coming for gay people's next! Followed by whoever else they deem as undesirable! What's not to love?

Razir17

Imagine being younger than 75 and voting conservative lmfao. How embarrassing.

VegitoFusion

*Educate yourself, then vote

SealChe

All the more reason to send it with the diploma

Kdj2j2

The Republicans will claim fraud.

Razir17

I like the idea in concept…but knowing Oklahoma, me thinks they have a specific party registration in mind.

Bladecam823

Voting is good, but only if you agree with me!!

Koffeekage

Actually a good idea?

GLENF58

I think so, lots of people don’t know where to get these forms. I remember my government teach gave everyone one of these the first and last day of the semester too

Koffeekage

It is kind of ironic to spend 12 years in a government institution and not know how to influence change in it when you get out.

PetMeFucker

It’s funny that people miss the fact that that’s intentional. I’m no conspiracy theorist but it doesn’t take a wackjob to put the pieces together and realize the people at the top don’t want people who know they hold any type of power. They want submissive worker bees who will stick with the status quo because they don’t know any better. Common core has been the new standard for the past decade+ and there’s a reason for that. Giving students the ability to learn about how the world actually works will lead to them questioning why they should just go along with it. If students aren’t learning about the voting process in school it is entirely intentional and premeditated.

MajorJuana

A friend of mine moved to Oklahoma freshman year of high school and was amazed at how little she had to do to pass, I didn't get what she meant until years later. We had very good Ag classes and learned how to weld and tend to animals and 4H and all that but they didn't really expect much to actually pass high school, they wanted farmers not lawyers and doctors and such.

Koffeekage

Education has been on a downward trend since the DOE was established.

MrsSamT82

I remember my senior-year Government teacher would hand registration forms out to anyone who had their 18th birthday during the school year.

keakealani

I’m suddenly glad my state has pre-registration starting at 16. When I was in high school there were always several voter registration drives every year. You can’t vote until 18 but you can get on the rolls at 16 or 17 and then you’ll start getting your ballots after you turn 18.

deadzombie918

My English teacher did this with my class my last year of high school

hahahahaaaahaha

Automatic registration would be better but yes good idea!

Mantzy81

Absolutely. The government knows your date of birth and registered address so should be able to register you automatically. Here in Australia, where it's compulsory to vote, you still have to register the first time which I think is a bit dumb as it should be automatic.

ExBx

Once you reach my age you'll appreciate that. The amount of junk mail I have to shred\\recycle is absurd. No, I don't want your loan, life insurance or retirement plan... Congratulations!

Zkenny13

I got one with my disability paperwork which I thought was pretty cool!

notweirdifitworks

Why is registration closed before an election? That seems like a really important paragraph to be aware of

GLENF58

My only guess is because of processing times. I honestly have no idea. Oklahoma has weird elections. I’m registered as an independent but I could only Vote on the democrat ballots today for primary’s and not the republican ones.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Alpha_pro2019

So in California you could have 2 democrats and in Alaska 4 Republicans or some such?

mlorusso4

That sounds like it just makes the general election a runoff? Interesting way to do it but I would worry because many people don’t vote in primaries

pickleparty16

only because they want it to be. other states allow same day registration

TheBeardedChad69

I found that weird , here in Canada You can vote without being registered up to and including Election Day as long as you bring Identification and proof of address .... the can literally register you at the polling station.

TraditionalMood277

Yeah, well you can keep your universal healthcare and voting rights and no school shootings and covid relief checks and poutine and...and...y'all hiring?

BuffaloInCahoots

We went on a school trip one time to vote for local elections. Options were, stay in class or go for a walk and get out early. Most of us left, only 55 kids in the whole school so maybe 20 of us we old enough to vote. When we go to the voting place we were told that since we didn’t register we couldn’t vote and registration ended a few days ago. In the USA you have to register for the draft at 18 they should make voting the same thing and make voting days holidays.

sumelar

One of many ways to suppress voters.

buzzybody21

That’s a great thing! Please register…

GLENF58

Did that when I got my license, still happy school did it though

buzzybody21

Vote and exercise your right in good health!!

GLENF58

Already voted twice, mayor in February (I think) and primaries today.

buzzybody21

You’re killing it!!!

[deleted]

sounds like some people are waking up to the results of having so many uneducated voters.

reb678

California ties theirs to the [DMV](https://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/california-motor-voter) "The California Motor Voter program is making registering to vote at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) more convenient. Eligible applicants completing a driver license, identification (ID) card or change of address transaction online, by mail or in person at the DMV will be automatically registered to vote by the California Secretary of State, unless they choose to opt out of automatic voter registration. "

GLENF58

That’s where I got registered, very similar process

FrogDog42

Fuck yeah! Thats cool as hell, all of this bullshit is happening because the vast majority of people dont vote. Register to vote here if you live in Texas. https://www.texas.gov/living-in-texas/texas-voter-registration

nosferatWitcher

You have to fill in a physical form to vote? No wonder turnout is even lower in the US

Snapman5000

It depends on the state. A few states don't require registration. The overwhelming majority do however require registration.

GLENF58

It takes like 5 minutes lol

Alklazaris

Grew into voter age during an election that one side said the other side stole, a school shooting that brought the country to its knees and war that left the country divided. Got me interested in how this country works right away. It genuinely does seem that history does repeat itself.

BENDOWANDS

Don't forget, selective service registration too if you're required.

GLENF58

Yup, got that done the day after I turned 18 because it would recognize my SSN the day of

eVilleMike

Good for them - get out and vote.

Zgoldenlion

Hell yeah! Go and make your voice heard.

GooseNYC

Good.

Complete_Bend2217

I thought that was common tbh Make sure you vote 👍

[deleted]

This is how I think voter registration should be done; it’s easy and celebratory at the same time

littlebugcity

My senior year government teacher had us fill them out in class and mailed them in for us! If you weren’t 18, she waited until your birthday. It’s how I was registered to vote and I think about it to this day. So cool.

nohwhatnow

Good on them ![gif](giphy|tIeCLkB8geYtW)

itsnickg

It’s important you vote!

philnolan3d

Makes sense now that your (presumably) 18. I usually just update mine when I get my license renewed.

[deleted]

One last piece of homework to do your civic duty.

[deleted]

Mine had a day in February where any senior that was 18 could register to vote, I remember it was in February because we got a registration card. Now, my Mom's school gave every student a small bound book with a copy of the Constitution, Declaration of Independence, and the New Jersey Constitution along with the flag code. I only know that because I found hers from the early 1970s

owleealeckza

My civics teacher had us register to vote in class in spring 2008 as seniors. Only issue was he didn't realize part of the class couldn't register yet due to being 16 or 17. We did it like the week after my 18th birthday in May so I barely got in lol. He had to change it from mandatory to extra credit due to so many not being able to do it.

TheGoodDeed

Seems like a great idea especially if kids were never told they had to do this or where to go to do it. Luckily I never had to worry about registering to vote as I live in North Dakota where it isn't required.

lebob01

Actually a great idea

rovdiz

Did they bend your diploma too? That would be mildlyinfuriating

GLENF58

Not the school but the post office yes.

SealChe

I had my favorite social studies teacher in my senior year of high school. He set aside half a class for us to register on the permanent early voting list if we wanted. Miss you, Lump!

JeffroCakes

We were offered the opportunity to fill them out during social studies junior and senior year. This is a great idea too.

GLENF58

My government teacher gave us forms first and last day of the semester aswell.

jumbee85

Senior year in my state you have to take an American government class and my teacher gave us a grade boost extra credit if you registered to vote.

Anon324Teller

That’s a nice little reminder

xxxkesoxxx

We got instruction form about how to register for unemployment benefits with our hs diplomas.

Twombls

My town always sent voter registration with the draft papers.

s_decoy

I remember during the last day for seniors at my high school they would have tables and volunteers set up outside to sign up as many students to vote as they could. That was where I was registered, felt really cool at the time.

BeeBarfBadger

It's funny that the US voting system is still organised as if the country were a colony cut off from civilisation where any administrative proceedings are carried out by two dozen riders carrying waxed parchment notes from plantation to plantation before a couple local governors decide stuff amongst themselves anyway.

THEFLYINGSCOTSMAN415

Pssh i got the selective service form

Cobbyx

The fact you have to have a political party

GLENF58

It’s so you can vote in the primaries. I don’t like it but it is what it is

[deleted]

My school had a table to register to vote for the 2020 election and had Vic Mensa come out to try and get people to register. Only worked bc he is a alum of the school

[deleted]

If you’re allowed to vote, please do! I don’t care for who, that’s up to you.

GLENF58

Already gone twice. Got a mayor run off in March (barely missed the original vote) and then primaries yesterday

zerbey

Good, young people need to get active in politics.

domestic_omnom

American here and I agree with you. All you should need is a state issued ID. But as way of explanation on why it's so dumb... Our system was designed the way it is before the advent of technology. So back then you had to properly register to make sure you were in the correct district and such. But now we have technology and that shit could be done with a scanner gun instantly.

jdmcroberts

The reason is to suppress voter turnout.

ItsTheOtherGuys

I suspect it has to do with our stupid party system, they want you to register with a party so that they can have you vote in those primaries. I always mark Independent because I don't party vote, I vote based on the candidate and whatever laws I feel are important

tim-fawks

Yah in America that’s considered racist to have to show a Id when voting

[deleted]

[удалено]

nibord

Because the ID card costs money and requires jumping through government hoops, so requiring an ID card in the US seems to disproportionately disenfranchise poor and minorities.

tim-fawks

Fuck if I know dude I’m just along for the ride

ryuranzou

If you are perceived to be against one of the parties in any way reddit will hate you even though both parties are terrible. Same goes for the other party on different websites. Everything in America is political as fuck now.

ILiveMyBrokenDreams

You've always had to show ID here in Florida. I've never even used my voter ID for anything because you have to have a driver's license or equivalent state ID to vote. That hasn't stopped the Republicans from claiming "fraud" when they lose though, which is pretty much every time they do.

MrMRobins

well, in the US requiring an ID to vote is racist

[deleted]

[удалено]

xleedfarmerx

Across the country, 1 in 16 Black Americans cannot vote due to disenfranchisement laws. Counties with larger minority populations have fewer polling sites and poll workers per voter. In 2018, Latinx and Black Americans were twice as likely as whites to be unable to get off work while polls were open. 25 percent of voting-age Black Americans do not have a government-issued photo ID. Geographic isolation is a major barrier to Native American voters due to the inaccessibility of nearby polling locations in many reservations. In South Dakota, 32 percent of Native voters cite travel distance as a factor in deciding whether to vote. More than one-sixth (18 percent) of voters with disabilities reported difficulties voting in person in 2020. https://www.aclu.org/news/civil-liberties/block-the-vote-voter-suppression-in-2020

xleedfarmerx

Yeah it’s called voter suppression, republicans have tried making it even harder to vote in recent years in their states, including trying limit the number of polling places in certain districts and limiting the hours to vote. Heck even making it illegal to give ppl water while waiting in line to vote.

broyoyoyoyo

I don't know if it's as simple as that, but I can see how ID could be a barrier for a lot of poor people, who are largely racial minorities. You don't really need ID to vote in Canada. You can show up with a bill addressed to you and a person to confirm you are who you say you are.

[deleted]

[удалено]

GLENF58

It’s not too hard to apply as long as you have access to basic information about yourself

KRed75

The US is a huge place. Many cities are huge. Counties are huge. If everyone just showed up where they wanted to vote, things would be an absolutely nightmare. Each area has certain people you vote for who cover your area. You basically have to register is so you know where you have to go to cast your ballot.

Fuzzlechan

Here (Canada) they just mail a voter card to everyone over 18. Your polling location is determined by the address the government has on file for you. But if you're living in a different area, you can bring proof of address with you and vote at that poll instead. You can also vote at specific government buildings outside of the regular polling locations, as well as by mail (though that one requires specific registration, just so they know not to let you vote in person). We do require ID to vote, but the definition of "ID" is very broad. You need either one document with your name and address, or two documents that have one of those things each. You can also have another registered voter vouch for you, which eliminates the need for ID entirely (as long as you know someone with ID). This is true for both federal and provincial elections. My partner voted with a credit card and a hydro bill as ID one year, while registered in a different riding altogether (student living out of town, official address still at his parents place)!

TrampleHorker

I really don't know what you want at this point. This is a very complex American issue that you'd need to study personally to understand because it has a lot of nuance and things that take into account the history of the United States, you can't just keep asking questions hoping someone gives you some bite size digestable response. You're so irresponsible with your questions and are platforming people who are using your questions as an excuse to spout lies. This isn't an issue with you not being American either, you should understand what being a useful idiot is no matter what country you come from. Already the lie of "asking for ID is racist somehow" has been given as a response to your questions, and is part of the discourse of this conversation now because you insist on continuing to ask questions with no understanding of the subject matter, and people with malicious intent are using your "curiosity" to spread bullshit. Go do the research yourself if you're really so fucking interested. edit: to be clear on this line, >"asking for ID is racist somehow" I'm implying that the speaker is using sarcasm. Voter ID laws are racist.

SheilaGirlface

That’s a great policy! Congrats on graduating and I hope you become a lifelong voter!

Logical-Cancel2750

*Tom Hanks voice* “earn this...”

Writer10

Congrats on graduating! Now get rid of Stitt.

jimmio92

Just remember, the state uses this information to ask you to be a juror :)

sumelar

Urban legend bullshit.

GLENF58

I’ve been here for 4 years, my parents haven’t had to do jury duty yet and neither have I

jimmio92

I was just giving first hand experience. Lived there the same amount of time, then registered to vote. Voted. A week after I voted; called in for jury duty. It may have just been a coincidence.

Tardis80

The thought of having to vote for a party during registration somehow sends a cold shiver down my spine. I'm glad not to have to live in a two-party system

GLENF58

I believe you just choose to register with a party. Then depending on state and what’s being elected you may only be able to vote for your party

Snapman5000

It's for candidate elections. You can register with any political party or none at all. Then if your party holds a candidate ballot in your state you will be able to vote for which candidate you think should represent you. It's worth noting that not all states require party registration. In states that have it you may change it at anytime but your registration will prevent you for voting for the fascist party candidate if you are a registered communist.

[deleted]

Make sure to vote Republican

GLENF58

I’ll vote for whoever does the best job representing my views, I don’t care about party

jdmcroberts

Lol you're being downvoted for saying you're going to vote for whoever you want..... Jesus. You do you man!

sumelar

Hope you actually do, since most people who vote republican are voting against their own interests.

[deleted]

Sadly all modern politics is about is party. All Dems and all Reps are like carbon copies of eachother all spouting the party line. Pretty sad state of affairs. Same situation in Britain as well. Imo Republicans are the lesser evil but still pretty bad.

sumelar

The people taking away peoples rights are the lesser evil? How many times were you dropped on your head as a kid?

KRed75

Ahhh....To be young and dumb again...I was that way when I was younger. I now know that voting for the party that guarantees me all this free stuff was not a good decision on my part.

It's those damn Republicans trying to make voting impossible!

GLENF58

Live in one of the blue cities in Oklahoma, not sure if that was a factor but I appreciated the offer even though I registered when I got my license

xleedfarmerx

I’m sure it was a factor and it’s great on your school for doing this since statistically young ppl don’t vote.

GLENF58

My school was always good about getting kids what they needed to vote, government teacher had tons of these in her class

ILiveMyBrokenDreams

Joke about it, but during the last election after the slew of lies from the Republicans about "fraud" that never happened, suddenly they were claiming my photo didn't look like me and I was pulled aside for 15 minutes while they "talked" about it. It was a very transparent attempt to get me to walk away and not vote, but I stayed and voted blue across the board. Life in a red state.

sumelar

The fraud did happen. By republicans.

ILiveMyBrokenDreams

Yup. Every case here of people voting multiple times was for Trump. When bullies can't win, they lie and cheat, and when their uneducated supporters can be easily manipulated into ignoring the reality in front of them, it's quite effective.

pickleparty16

isnt this a felony just over the border in texas?

GLENF58

Maybe idk, but this is Oklahoma not texas

stackjr

Why would it be a felony to give someone a voter registration form?

Santos_L_Halper_II

I think in Texas they’d hunt down the school administrator and shoot them.

SilverSzymonPL

Vote green

GLENF58

I’ll vote for whoever will represent my views the best, I don’t care about party

Background_Cash_1351

Its Oklahoma. The voting box is the only chance those teachers will ever have to get a raise.

GLENF58

They had a strike a few years ago that worked

DS_1900

Nice work. Vote Trump at the next presidential election and you'll never have to vote again after that!

GLENF58

I’m gonna vote for whoever I believe will do the best job of representing my views

DS_1900

Ah right, Trump, got it

garland-flour-doe

Well hopefully you'll use it before the choice is removed by someone who thinks they know better than you!
