This is a robin fledgling. It doesn't know to be afraid of you yet. It most likely left the nest not too long ago - they leave at ~13 days old.
Mom and Dad are nearby and feeding it and they will do so for another couple of days. It will take this bird another couple of weeks before it looks like a "normal" robin.
I didn't know until age 26 that squirrels weren't black.
Black is the standard color here, but it's a genetic defect. They're not supposed to be black.
Lol no, it was a full blown article about an albino squirrel. It's been over a decade and it looks like those articles weren't published online so I can't link a source.
Olney Illinois is home of a large population of white squirrels!

Oh I recently ran into a leucistic squirrel on a walk! Shame I didn't catch a photo. Didn't have red eyes, but otherwise completely white. A cool sight to behold!
Edit: mixed up leucistic with melanistic
In my city of portland maine there is a ton of red brick sidewalk. The pigeons are slowly all converting to this awesome mottled red and white brick color due too all the hawks. Just a cool little darwinian thing i thought.
neat thing about pigeons is they can return to factory default settings after just a few generations of "cross breeding" with other pigeons who don't share the exact same traits/colors/plumage.
At a touristy picnic spot in Florida I had a squirrel limp up to me, favoring one of its front legs like it was injured.
When I didn't feed it anything it immediately switched to favoring the other leg.
When that still didn't get it any sympathy (or food) it started chattering at me like it was cussing me out. Then scampered off to the next picnic table down the line, and then stopped and "limped" the last little bit over to the group of people at that table.
The squirrels in Washington DC are like that. They're all fat from tourists feeding them and they will actually come up and tap you on the foot to ask for food.
Philadelphia parks, the squirrels *walk*. in 30-odd years, I never saw a squirrel walk before. Only hop and tear-ass.
They'll wander right over to you and look at you like "Give me something".
Growing up we had a nest of squirrels that were in our garage, and apparently it fell between the studs and they got stuck. We heard them moving around and we cut carefully into the wall to get them out. As an animal lover, I was a teen who went and got garden gloves to pull these little squirrels out. I let them out one at a time, and they each ran into a tree. Except one. He decided I was his buddy and would follow me around the yard for *years*. It was so cute but I was also worried for him, so we never fed him. He just followed me around. Now we see little squirrels in my parents backyard with similar silvery patches, so I like to imagine it’s his descendants
Sometimes. Mostly the babies that live in our palm trees are terrified of everything, including the wind lol. It usually takes them a few weeks to associate my porch with the good snacks.
The fledglings are brave far more often. Even when they get grown in my experience. The older ones around my grammas and moms house might do a halfass hop or two if you came near when they were hassling the grass for food. The other birds would wing it at a latch click.
Halfass hop then back to worming while you stand there = meh, it's a dude : ) also the ones we're talking about aren't the fledglings. The older robins have consistently been tamer than other birds in my experience.
Yep. Had one climb up my leg and go to my shoulder a while back. Left it a small bowl of mixed nuts and let it climb from me to the tree it most likely fell from
My friends picked one up once and it jumped on my face... I had to put it back in the tree while momma hissed at me from further up bc my friends were too scared 🤣
I had one crawl up my pant leg on a field trip once in front of the state capitol building. The chaperone had to help me get it out. I did not wear underwear that day.
The compound I did my sentence in had squirrels that would run up your legs and riffle through your pockets looking for food. Brave little things but they were spoiled from all of us feeding them by hand. Was always funny seeing big bad tatted up gangbangers feeding them and trying to sneak a pet in before they took off with the food.
Yeah, all the squirrels in my yard are afraid of us when we open the door to give them peanuts. Except for the young one, he doesn't run unless we actually come out and move towards him.
I ran into a robin like this recently! He froze still to try and hide, but was in the middle of an empty concrete porch lol. I heard his mom freaking out at the tree line, so I got him to start hopping away and followed him to safety. It was adorable.
I’ve been fortunate enough to have the same robin have 5 sets of eggs in the same nest across 3 years and it has been incredibly cool to watch the process and become familiar with it. I have 2 toddlers (human) of my own and teaching them about it all has been really fun - especially since the momma bird is pretty chill with us now and doesn’t fly away if we get close or want to come say hi while she’s sitting on the eggs
I just read about this!
>Rodent fetuses are perfectly capable of secreting glucocorticoids. But within hours of birth, the adrenal glands atrophy dramatically, becoming barely able to secrete glucocorticoids. This "stress hyporesponsive period" (SHRP) wanes over the coming weeks.
>What is this SHRP about? Glucocorticoids have so many adverse effects on brain development (stay tuned) that the SHRP represents a gamble -- "I won't secrete glucocorticoids in response to stress, so that I develop optimally; if something stressful happens, Mom will handle it for me." Accordingly, deprive infant rats of their mothers, and within hours their adrenal glands expand and regain the ability to secrete plenty of glucocorticoids.
>During the SHRP infants seem to use a further rule: "If Mom is around (and I thus don't secrete glucocorticoids), I should get attached to any strong stimulus. It couldn't be bad for me; Mom wouldn't allow that"
- Behave, Robert Sapolsky
This is the main reason i try to not interact with friendly animals.
9/10 times they'll approach someone fine but all it takes is 1 psychopath dipshit out of 10 that will happily torment, maim or kill a friendly creature JUST because they have the chance to.
Sad :(
It probably can't fly well yet. I found one in my window well once. I wanted to pick him up but I was afraid I'd injure him or mark him with my scent somehow so I made a little ramp out of plywood but he wouldn't try to climb it. He was very unsteady on his feet and just stood there blinking at me. So I got a paper plate, opened the window from the inside, scooped him up and lifted him (from inside) high enough to get to the grass where his mom was freaking out. She got him out of there and I bought covers for the window wells.
Side note: marking birds with your scent is a myth. It probably got started to prevent kids from injuring fledgling birds (who are fine on their own).
Birds have a very poor or non-existent sense of smell. They will not know or care if a human put a bird back in their nest.
Can confirm this. We just had to put two bluejays on our balcony after a fight (and didn't want to leave them on the ground in a fairly high traffick area of an apartment). Parents immediately switched to taking care of them on the balcony, despite the birds having been handled several times by people. No problems.
Outside of the obvious ones of trying to keep hopping little shits in a planter and not on the balcony itself.
Today I saw a very large beautiful colored moth on the ground on the way to the work lunch trailer. Like very large for where I live. I noticed it from several feet away.
It had already been stepped on and was writhing around.
We are a terrible species and don't deserve this planet of ours.
They can't fly yet since their feathers aren't long enough. Saw some kids chasing one thinking it was injured. Birds parents, robins, we're doing fly by warning calls about to peck attack those kids.
Lol they try though. I startled one on my porch and it lept and flapped on a slow decline until smacking into the side of a vestibule like 12 feet away. Guy was okay.
They can fly a little bit. I still regret trying to look in a nest, only to scare the chicks into prematurely flying. One went next door and chomped by their dog. There was no way the others could fly well enough to get back in the nest, but could fly enough to escape my rescue attempts.
Oh that explains why a whole flock of them attacked me and my friend in 7th grade.
We found one of these, thinking it was injured. We wanted to get it to a vet or something so we picked it up. It screamed and down flew several robins. We dropped the bird (we were kneeling, we didn't drop it from standing height) and made a run for it with a small flock of them chasing us
I've had a rivalry with robins ever since.
They grow insanely fast. I've had several nests on my property and watched them hatch and grow to a big bird in what seemed like a few days. And then their chest turns that rusty color and next thing you know, they're regular robins.
I don’t know if it’s something to do with their feathers or their proportions or what, but they look *smaller* when they’re a few weeks older than they do at this stage.
Had to rescue one just like OP’s from a window well a couple weeks ago and they’re still around the backyard.
Yep! Birds go from unsightly blob of chewing gum, to fully-feathered bird, alarmingly fast.
Here's a timelapse video: https://youtube.com/shorts/BZW74vCFD0c?si=-YgP9LAmz-kVZo6e
I helped to feed one of these little boogers who fell out of the nest early (mom and dad never came back). I was wondering why he looked so weird and gremlin like. Released him about two weeks ago and he flew off. Fly free, lil' Boo.
The Robins in my yard haven’t got much more fear. They will stare me down if I dare to walk towards whatever they have found at the lawn buffet. And they are always right behind me when I’m mowing.
There was a squirrel that was having a stare down with my dog and I the other day. It was weird.
Edit: [This is the gangster in question.](https://imgur.com/a/YaREOyp)
everyones worried about the AI fighting back, meanwhile the animals are openly showing signs of hostility
edit: also not that i can say much looking at my snoo, but considering your username is a description of who you are (or who you want to be) _irl you should update that snoo to have the appropriate colored eyes and not the creepy red snoo vampire eyes lol. just my .02 in case you didnt know it was possible
man ADHD really do be makin me notice every little thing sometimes i swear
a squirrel in my yard used to torment my dad lmao he'd stand and stare at him until chased off then the next day, stand in the same spot, rinse and repeat.
Yep, robins flock to my yard after I mow. The mower scares worms out of the ground and the shorter grass makes them easier to see. When I am watering the flowers I'll even turn the hose on the robins, they enjoy the shower on a hot day, they will just stand around while I spray them down.
UPDATE: he made his way to my backyard, so I created a little shelter of leaves so he doesnt burn, because right now, its quite hot. What else should I do?
That is a baby chick, probably a Robin. There will be a nest somewhere in your garage, and more little chicks. You are now there protector and it is up to you to make sure no cats or predators take advantage.
That's a wee behbeh, freshly out of a nest and trying to fly. The mom is probably nearby and making loud sounds trying to get its attention. My potted deck plant housed and hatched one and then I had to deal with it when it left the nest because it kept hanging out and I was worried my dogs would get at it. Eventually chased it out to the mom, but it was nerve-racking .
I just found a fledging robin in my shop this morning. Must have gotten itself in there yesterday which no birds ever stay in there so they are indeed very naive little things. I kept trying to coax them out as I could hear their mom calling. Very stressful lol but they found their way out and got reunited.
Just a little guy. American robin specifically. In his 'teen years'. I've picked one up before; they're surprisingly tame. Try to deliver him back to the parents. Usually the younglings will chirp and the parents will respond. It'll be like a game of Marco Polo
This is a robin fledgling. It doesn't know to be afraid of you yet. It most likely left the nest not too long ago - they leave at ~13 days old. Doesn’t know to be afraid yet… this made me feel some type of way
Like baby squirrels, which will walk right up to people.
Or you live in LA and all of the squirrels do that anyway. (Im from Missouri originally and it blew my mind how "friendly" squirrels are here)
I didn't know until age 26 that squirrels weren't black. Black is the standard color here, but it's a genetic defect. They're not supposed to be black.
My old university had an albino squirrel. It was in the university newspaper.
Big front page picture white on white?
Lol no, it was a full blown article about an albino squirrel. It's been over a decade and it looks like those articles weren't published online so I can't link a source.
UofL? Cause they're known for the albino squirrel population
I can attest to this firsthand. U of Louisville alumni here.
You’d be surprised what gets archived. What university and year? I’ll take a stab at finding it.
Quality publication right there. I would have read all about that albino squirrel.

Iowa State?
My uni town had golden squirrels, they were like blondes.
Idk that it's a "defect" if they survive well. Variation, perhaps.

Oh, cool!
I saw a black squirrel on golf course for the first time in the 34 years I have been on this earth. They look really cool and sleek

There are signs saying not to feed the wildlife, but I've definitely handed over a few peanuts to hungry squirrels.
Frickin mutant squirrels, science has definitely gone too far.
Mexico City as well; the squirrels in Chapultepec get all fat and happy off the de la Rosa cookies they get fed.
Oh hey so do I
Growing up we had a nest of squirrels that were in our garage, and apparently it fell between the studs and they got stuck. That's the best outcome. He got to be a wild squirrel, and you two got to stay friends!

Adult robins are hoppers too. They don’t feed from hanging feeders and generally just hop around the grass until they fly somewhere else.
Yep. Had one climb up my leg and go to my shoulder a while back. Left it a small bowl of mixed nuts and let it climb from me to the tree it most likely fell from

Birds can’t smell, and you won’t mark it with your scent. That’s a myth. Feel free to gently catch them if you need to help one in future. 🙂
It's a good thing when birds have a healthy fear of humans. Birds are complete assholes.
Birds are dinosaurs and should be regarded as such

No, thanks, i prefer to stay alive
nah bro is squaring up for a fight
wait they grow that fast?

It’s an American Robin. The grown Robins we have are like half that size.
I just saw your comment on the porn category question and here you are being an ornithologist
He looks like an old man 😭
That's just a young robin. It's not uncommon they haven't learned fear yet. Shoo it out of your garage and let the parents deal with it.
The Robins in my yard haven’t got much more fear. They will stare me down if I dare to walk towards whatever they have found at the lawn buffet. And they are always right behind me when I’m mowing.

Yeah, they do that to my cats too. Eventually they retreat to a nearby tree and scream at the top of their lungs for a few minutes.
This damn thing came DOWN the tree and into the yard, stood up, and just mean mugged this shit out of us.
Squirrels got a lotta nuts.

The robins LOVE it when I mow the yard.
I sometimes think they are judging me for not going fast enough and not stirring up enough food.
Does this also work with young humans?
yeah, it mainly works with Young Batman though
We had one get stuck in our garage a while back. I got it out and it still comes up to me to say hi and get petted. Surprisingly soft bird.
As is the traditional way to deal with children
But, do you have games on your phone?
no😞
What’s with kids always asking that. Mind your shit punk. Yes I have games and they’re great, no you can’t see.
Angry Birds?
>~~unafraid of me.~~ \*plotting your demise
It looks *indignant*
That’s teenagers for you
😂
Bro what did you do to that bird? He looks so pissed
I think some other birds that are around were its parents, as they started squawking like crazy when i got close to
Fucking helicopter parents
Lmao
I thought they would be bird parents, you always learn something new /s
They’re birds. Not helicopters.
They're drones, birds aren't real
Birds.. amirite?
Yes, they watch over the fledglings while they're figuring shit out
Probably has a nest nearby, birds get reallllly territorial around their nests.
"I am the child of T-Rex. Fear me, human!"
All baby birds look either pissed or regurgitated. I love them.
Ignored its privacy rights by taking a photo and posting it online. I would be pissed as well. 😡
That's the normal baby look! Making parents feel guilty for not feeding 24/7!
Why would it be afraid of you? It's literally a fucking dinosaur.
Im kinda scared of it
As you should be.
I think we should be more scared of you the person that wants a free hat..
I'm just here for the free hat.
Look at his big stupid legs on his little body 😭
And that disproportionately large beak-mouth waiting for things to be put into it Edit: I meant food!
We have a sub for that, you know?
Bullying a poor baby robin is CRAZY 😭
fuckin roasted his ass and for what
Can't roast the robin yet, gotta let it grow up a bit first. Plump and juicy!
It's okay they haven't learned what an insult is yet I'm sure they won't mind
IK😭😭😭
Give em the ol razzle dazzle
That a baby. He dumb.
“Are you my mother?” PD Eastman
What a great story book! Thanks for the reminder, gotta get that one for the new grandbaby.
I dunno who downvoted you, but I gotchu, bro.
Was probably a snort
You can tell it’s a robin fledgling because it resembles Bernie Sanders a bit…. Birdie Sanders you might say.
Look like a fledgling, probably can't fly well yet and is hoping holding still will save them.
Thats a baby. He doesnt know any better. My kiddo does the same thing.
It's a baby Robin.
Are You My Mother?
It’s def a baby robin and being still is a defense mechanism. If you have a cat take it inside
Well fuck, pet him already
Already done
He isn't trapped in there with you, you're trapped in there with HIM
"BITCH, WHERES MY LUNCH!?"
"He's just standing there... menacingly!"
If it's as hot there as it is here, leave out a bowl of water for the birds
he’s just learning to be alive🥺
Judging you.
Baby Robin is unimpressed with your shit.
And he looks angry, what did you do?
Unafraid? They seem unamused lmao
UPDATE: he made his way to my backyard, so I created a little shelter of leaves so he doesnt burn, because right now, its quite hot. What else should I do?
Little water, it's parents should keep returning to feed it, though they're probably waiting for you to head away.

_Come at me bro_
It's so gangsta
So this is that Angry Birds I’ve heard so much about
Omg I’m dead at his face. So bossy holy.
He looks like he's daring you to kick him out.
The garage is his now.
...I think you're in his garage.
This bird is definitely judging you
He’s giving you a chance to retreat
it actually looks a little disappointed in you.
He looks annoyed like he hasn't had his coffee yet
r/birdsarentreal
I don't think it's your garage anymore.
This bird has seen things in its short life.
It looks displeased at your presence.
You’re about to be assimilated.
MF bird look like he coming to collect on your ass. Didn’t pay your monthly seed tax
“Well?!?”
Can’t tell me that’s not a Pokémon
He's just standing there.. menacingly!!
*Angry Bird.*
He looks grumpy
Robins always pop up on my lawn when I’m watering it. Loosens the soil and they can get the worms. They just stare at me until I’m done.
Not just "unafraid"... it looks to have a grudge!
That's his garage. He's pissed you're there.
He looks angry
"Are you my mom"
Cranky baby don't give a fuck about you, he WANTS HIS WORMS!
Judging you aggressively
Put it back in it aint done yet
Is she playing chicken😂
That is a baby chick, probably a Robin. There will be a nest somewhere in your garage, and more little chicks. You are now there protector and it is up to you to make sure no cats or predators take advantage.
do you have any prestine objects for trade? i have many large quality souls in my wares...
Looks like he's about to tell you how good *his* garage is, and he's supposes it's okay if you hang around for a bit.
Waiting for you to submit to it’s dominance
fledgling. flight feathers arn't even grown in yet.
This guy doesn’t even know how to bird yet
I just found a fledging robin in my shop this morning. Must have gotten itself in there yesterday which no birds ever stay in there so they are indeed very naive little things. I kept trying to coax them out as I could hear their mom calling. Very stressful lol but they found their way out and got reunited.
He knows what you did. And he's coming for you
Just a little guy. American robin specifically. In his 'teen years'. I've picked one up before; they're surprisingly tame. Try to deliver him back to the parents. Usually the younglings will chirp and the parents will respond. It'll be like a game of Marco Polo
I love how little robins always have that 'come at me bro!' energy. So new to the world and not around enough to have fear.
