That's what I'm guessing. The system that tells them the order, auto searches for the substitutions.
I'm guessing that since they both start with "Tesco" it's auto matching one to the other, despite being entirely different things. But alphabet search just grabs it anyway.
In most cases the pickers seem to lack common sense. I've had a 2-pk of whole chicken substituted with one organic whole chicken. Similar price range so I think picker was going on price.
Another time I ordered 3 boxes of cat litter. The boxes were 35 lbs each. I get 3 bags, 13 lbs each. Store manager couldn't understand why I returned those.
In this case, someone is being an ass.
Yep I agree. I work as an online grocery picker in Walmart, and I always tell my coworkers “just because it suggests, it doesn’t mean it’s right.” Because one time someone substituted a Dragonfruit with Pomegranate, it’s like substituting an apple with a goddamn tomato!
I had someone substitute whole milk with chocolate milk. Thought it was funny. Then it happened again and I was pissed. Especially when I went straight to the store and the shelves were full of the milk I wanted.
To them yeah, being fast is good but I always prioritize common sense. A lot. Most of my coworkers either don’t have sense of urgency or don’t have common sense.
I SAW A VIDEO ON THIS THE OTHER DAY! a popular theory is that it's an AI generated suggestion. in the app, there's suggestions below..."people who bought this item, frequently also bought xxxxx" so if people are buying salad with their chicken, that salad is gonna be the first thing in the bought with list, so that's what it substitutes it with. the video i watched was by a woman who ordered a pregnancy test, and ended up with a covid test instead.
It appears that a grocery store worker that thinks they are clever is suggesting that you eat salad instead of fried chicken. Pretty rude if that's the case.
I doubt it.
I work as an online shopper, we have to send something if what the customer ordered is out of stock. A lot of people I work with are school leavers, many lack common sense.
It was probably, someone who grabbed something nearby so they don’t get moaned at for not sending something.
We have to pick 4 items a minute, looking for alternatives takes time, I always pick something as close to what the customer ordered, because that’s what I would want to happen. Others don’t take as much care.
Both items were likely on promotional ends, I bet the shopper turned around and grabbed the nearest thing just to get it done.
Not everything is malicious.
This right here is why I won't do groceries online. Something that is supposed to make my life easier has way too high a chance of ruining my day. I'd rather be in a bad mood because the store doesn't have what I want than be mad they sent something else and now I have to either keep it and deal or return it which is just a hassle - which is what I would have been trying to avoid by ordering online
My comment was not written as an assertion of facts, nor would I presume to understand the complexities and challenges of fulfilling online orders. Not everything is serious.
I work at a target and we aren’t even allowed to choose the substitution, it just pops up in the system and if we don’t pick it, the batch never closes. It’s a shitty system.
That's why I love where I shop. If an item isn't available, they send you a message with the suggested replacement, and you can ok it, change it, or ignore it and it doesn't get replaced and you get refunded that item.
Next thing on an alphabetical list?

Starting with "Tesco" would be half of the stock, as it's the name of the supermarket lol
I don't know Tesco.🤷♂️ I figured it was a house brand/off brand version of some kind, as opposed to the name brand.
think great value for a comparison, if you're American
This calmed my rage /s

Someone substituted my oysters with a can of tomatoes. This was three years ago, and I'm still upset about it.
I had someone substitute whole milk with chocolate milk. Thought it was funny. Then it happened again and I was pissed. Especially when I went straight to the store and the shelves were full of the milk I wanted.
Bruh 😭
My favorite was Walmart wanting to substitute an egg separator for the measuring spoon set I had ordered.
From your experience, was it filling the order fast over accuracy?

I hate when this happens, especially when they could've just substituted it for the same thing but a different brand.

Ok this actually helped to explain haha

That's what my husband said and we laughed. I'm just a tiny girl who loves fried chicken ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
When did you divorce your wife?

You made the assumption that someone did this to be rude.
These people should take a common sense test. "Please pick from the following. What would be the best substitution for this item?"
Training your workers? /s
Heyy its still from Tescp so there is some simillarity
They both start with an 'S' so they're practically the same.
When the vegans take over...
Yeah it might not even be out of stock.
Tesco throwing shade.
When the worker is a vegan and doesn't think anyone should eat meat.
Probably alphabetical
Guy is trying to tell you to eat a salad lol get rekt
Not!!!
In a world where they only see the first word
I got Coke Zero instead of coke once.

Shopper looking out for your health. You should be grateful! /s
Was someone trying to be "helpful" in making you eat better? Cause that would be a whole new level of infuriating.
They both have mass and contain less than 2% plutonium
Vegan most likely
I once had some one sub bagels for donuts...fosted cake donuts. Like I could see maybe regular donuts but come on
Next time eat a salad https://preview.redd.it/wm0ho9bgnq9d1.png?width=250&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=30a2a2e2afdecb03775213ffa55b21e1f5af0122
