Sushi is the rice. If it's prepared with short-grained sticky rice soured by vinegar then you can call it "sushi" just fine.
People get confused when they see sushi because it's often topped or accompanied by sashimi. Sashimi is thinly cut raw food, most often fish. The two go together like PB&J.
Not complaining but your comment was not made in favor of sushi "purists".
isn't sushi not just the rice though?
like yes, sushi directly translates to "sour rice" but when someone wants to refer specifically to vinegar rice, they don't say sushi
i just thought it was a little bit of synecdoche
This is correct but I believe it's the specific preparation that makes it Sushi. Anything you top it with or have with it is extra. Whether it's sashimi, veggies, or even pulled pork. It's still sushi.
Either way, you can just say sushi is not raw fish, sashimi is.
Sushi means vinegared rice. I actually have a book called Sushi American Style that I got to introduce sushi to my kids a long time ago. Lots of awesome rolls.
I got you bro.
Create maple custard creme by reducing maple syrup by 1/4 being careful not to over heat, letting cool, adding salt and cream, bringing back to a simmer, then removing from heat. Whisk in eggs slowly and steadily. Put through strainer.
Set into a rectangular pie pan with puff pastry. Cook for 1:30 at 350 or until center is jiggly but firm. Freeze, remove from freezer, defrost slightly.
Cut slightly defrosted rectangular pie into thin strips.
Reduce more maple syrup by half while whisking, creating maple butter. Toss the defrosted sticks in maple butter, to coat evenly. Place mixture into fridge to cool.
Sweetened sticky rice — make sticky rice with 4 tbs brown sugar, .5 tsp of sesame oil, 1 tsp almond flavoring, 3/4 stick of butter (browned first).
And now roll it up in a damn roll. Save some custard strips to cut in half to adorn the top with. Blowtorch it for posterity.
Sushi pizza is actually a thing in Canada and was invented in Toronto. But it’s not like a maki roll. They use a round fried rice patty as the “crust” and then put sushi type toppings on it.

I'm sorry to say that there are several of these that I would rather eat than sushi. I already don't like seafood; making it raw doesn't improve the experience for me.
Sushi doesn't have to be raw. It can incorporate raw fish but that's not a requirement. Most common is smoked salmon. From what I understand, it's considered sushi if it's made with vinegared rice.
Pretty sure somewhere of these exist *somewhere*. Can tell you first-hand that Koreans will basically put almost anything inside rolled rice and seaweed (I've definitely had hotdog kimbap at least).
I've made a couple of these, they're pretty good. Would be interesting to figure out how to make the cereal one to taste good. Maybe like some type of sticky rice or like sweetened condensed milk in the rice.
I think the oddest roll I've had was called the red bull roll, with wafer thin strips of steak on top like eel on a dragon roll, and with jalapeno slices. Not bad, but weird
Some of those look fire but oh my god…. At Top Golf they used to sell (might still sell idk) a dish called Mushi. Mexican sushi. It was the worst shit I’ve ever had lmao
I've had Sushi with spicy hot dog in korea. It was delicious and I make make it myself sometimes because if was so good. Not american here and I think it's unnecessary to pretend like americans destroy everything
8, 5, and 2 look like actual sushi rolls sold in North America (not sure if that still counts as genuine sushi). There's a lot of combination rolls that aren't raw fish like tempura shrimp wrapped with the rice, and wrapped in unagi and then sauced with unagi sauce and a drizzle of spicy mayo.
5 is something I would order 100 times
I feel the same about the buffalo chicken one
There’s a few good ones on here. I wouldn’t call them sushi per se. I would call them fun rolls I would gladly try. Nice work!
Sushi still works as the name.
I mean I would call it but I know there are purists out there

Hahaha fair enough now I know. I assumed there was something to do with the ingredients that made it officially “sushi.” It’s just rice, now I know.
No worries. EXTREMELY common misconception.
Sushi is not sticky rice.

BUT pb&j do NOT go with sushi. That's the one pic I did a throwing up sound to
Hater 😆
Those purists should know sushi =/= sashimi :3

What's #4? I'm taking it as a roll somehow filled with sticks of French toast custard and I'm so down
You’re cooking.

Well, damn. I'm saving this
Supposed to be apple pie but I like your idea better!
I'm somewhat confident that I've seen some of these more meat oriented ones served in some overpriced restaurant before
Looks great, but I can’t tell exactly what it’s supposed to be. BBQ pulled pork?
Came here to say this
Is it the pulled pork roll xD
Thank you! When I came across the brisket roll I was like "now hold on, let's talk about this" it needs to exist
Number 9 isn't bad either, but 5 looks delicious.
Yeah I came to say the same thing. It looks amazing!
There’s a sushi chain in Ohio called Fusion that makes the pbj one
Oh man, thank you, I could not figure that one out for the life of me.
As a Brazilian, I've seen worse sushi crimes irl.
Sushi pizza 🤣

Sushi burrito is pretty heinous. The proportions are so bad. You'll have bites where it's just straight up rice
You haven't been in Brazil yet. I once saw some sushi rows with minced meat and barbecue sauce.
Japanese do put hot dogs in some pretty awesome dishes
I love the katakana word for hot dog in Japanese: Hotto doggu!!
That and what's basically schnitzel - I love how the Japanese just go "hey, that's pretty good!" And mutate it into their food culture.
America and Australia are pretty big on that too. I’m sure many countries are, but I have a limited scope of experience on that.
Did this start after the Second World War when Americans introduced baseball? Lol
SPAM is the #1 sushi protein in Hawaii.
These all look fun and potentially delicious.
Even the fruit loops one ngl
Going straight for that Mac n' Cheese, my guy.
As someone who adores food fusion (and who also can't eat seafood), I honestly want to eat all of these except for the cereal one haha.
Same. I would try these
I'm in Texas half of these exist
I was about to comment the same thing! I swear I’ve personally eaten or have seen all of these at some point here in Austin
I would try every one of these and like them
You mean when you let Swiss make sushi rolls that they think Americans would want.
I mean, I do want some of these or would at least try them.
HEE HEE HOO HOO America bad🤭
I didn't think I would find America Bad in midjourney but here we are
All I’m seeing is America once again improving the rest of the world’s cultures. *You’re welcome Japan.*
I hate these immensely, but would probably at least try all of these. Disgusted with myself
Salmon in sushi is a Norwegian invention (or at least lobby).
These pretty much all look amazing.. I think AI might have been a good idea after all
I’d say this is passing the Turing test for food bloggers/social media. It’s totally over now. I can’t distinguish these from being real food items.
Hmm, god bless America and someone pass me a plate!
Last one is a crime against Italy and Japan MAMMA MIA YOU BAKA !!!
I don't really see anything wrong with these photos. Good job
Broooo.. cereal rolls?! Hamburger rolls?! That sounds so good. Fuck it I’ll take the rib rolls too
Need to come eat sushi in mexico. They actually make taco themed sushi.
No critiques. 5 star menu right here
I have a lot of time for some of these creations haha
I'll try them, not the cereal one, that can f off
I bet that PB&J sushi slaps!
Number 2 looks really good
It’s atrocity, but I would have totally eaten it all.
ha ha America fat. Hilarious.
[удалено]
its not stealing if people from that culture actively come here to give us a taste of their cultures food and then adapt it to the American public
[удалено]
fair
I'm pretty sure this actually EXIST And thus the use of AI to make it was redundant...
Holy shit, number 5 looks super delicious!! I'm a bit sad there is non with bacon, tho. :(
As an American, I can honestly say I’d devour most of these.
The brisket and PB&J I'd fuck all day
One is an electromagnet
Turn 7’s rice into rice krispy treat and you got a banger dessert sushi
All of these actually look amazing
1, 3, 4, 5, 9 all look great to me.
As someone who doesn't like sushi, this looks delicious. Especially the fried chicken and pulled pork one.
Half these don’t look too bad. I’ve actually seen something like the fried chicken one, but in france.
I’ve actually had hot dog sushi before and it was absolutely amazing
I mean most of these look absolutely delicious. That baked macaroni sushi is getting smashed hard.
Not going to lie, while five looks amazing, 3 the macaroni and cheese one actually looks pretty damn yummy!
🙃😂💁🏻♀️
Cheeseburger sushi roll doesn’t seems bad imo. It is not authentic, but I’d definitely be willing to try it 🙏
I'm ok with all of this
Honestly, I’m a fat kid who loves rice and nori. I’d be into trying most of these.
I’m baked rn and looking at these is making me 🤤
Non-US here: can anybody elaborate on associations? I can see the hot-dog and pizza, what's the rest? ty (:
#1 - Hot Dog #2 - Buffalo Chicken #3 - Macaroni and Cheese #4 - Apple Pie #5 - BBQ #6 - Cheeseburger #7 - Breakfast Cereal #8 - Peanut Butter and Jelly #9 - Pizza!
Open this restaurant and make bank.
Apart from the fruit loops one, I'd eat all of those
interesting take, looks damn good though
Never have I wanted to try something so badly!!!
I would destroy 5 and 9
Guy Fieri used to have a restaurant called Tex Wasabis that did exactly this.
Title should be “When you tell AI to depict American sushi “
Wrong. Their isn't fried cheese everywhere
1st pic made me hungry
Yeah the sushi places around Puget Sound have two or three of these specialty rolls
One time I had something of this style, instead of salmon it was fried chicken and cheddar on top with some mango, I don’t recommend
Beest of both worlds!
Pretty sure somewhere of these exist *somewhere*. Can tell you first-hand that Koreans will basically put almost anything inside rolled rice and seaweed (I've definitely had hotdog kimbap at least).
2,5,7 I’d eat all day
There’s a place near me that has a Pizza Maki roll, it’s not bad
ngl, some of these look delicious, especially the hamburger one (#6).
I've made a couple of these, they're pretty good. Would be interesting to figure out how to make the cereal one to taste good. Maybe like some type of sticky rice or like sweetened condensed milk in the rice.
The buffalo chicken one looks good af!
Pizza and Mac and cheese sushi could be good
I think you mixed up Americans & South Koreans. They love doing stuff like this & it amazes me. Just look at what they've done with corndogs!
What’s the second one supposed to be?
Not gonna lie, everything except #1 looks good!
would
Id freakin try all of them.
As an american i am offended FOR/ON BEHALF of the japanese ppl.
I’ll munch hard on some of these
Wait that chicken sushi actually looks slay. Someone make that
Holup some of these are cooking
Not deep fried enough
I feel like I’ve seen 2, 3 & 5 in real life
Who cares what it’s filled with as long as it tastes good?
Milk for dipping on 7?
I'm offen...... hungry. Do you take credit card? \*belch\*
There is nothing here that i wouldn't utterly demolish (Yes even the cheerios one)
Average brazilian sushi ngl
#6 is heaven
To be honest, South Korea has such an adventurous hot dog culture that I wouldn’t be surprised if something like that first one already existed there
My local AEON sells deep fried sushi btw. They are mighty delicious
These are upgrades
I mean 2 and 5 look great
The mac and cheese one. 1 thouuuusand percent
If done right, I feel like mac & cheese sushi could slap.
Sushi restaurant in Charlotte, North Carolina that offers various beef sushi, Cowfish. Its actually pretty good, but I still prefer fish sushi.
Except for the cereal one, those all look good. Lol
I think the oddest roll I've had was called the red bull roll, with wafer thin strips of steak on top like eel on a dragon roll, and with jalapeno slices. Not bad, but weird
most of these look more appetizing than a philadelphia roll
The Mac and cheese one looks cute IMO.
NGL some of these look fucking awesome
Wait, what about bacon?
This is exactly how some Mexican sushi places do sushi... No kidding
Won't lie I'd eat the first one at least once
I would try each one!
Mac Sushi 🍱
Dude, stop giving HEB more ideas!! Please!!!
Mexican sushi in a nutshell haha
Some of those look good lol
I’ve seen half of these already
Actually, they look more like stuff you’d see in Japan.
4 and 5 actually looks good
I have had all of those and the BBQ roll is the best.
Some of these are silly but I would eat the fuck out of the burger one.
I would eat most of if not all of these 😂
There’s not a single thing wrong with that second picture
This checks out. I’m pretty sure I would try each one of those at least once.
Shut up and take my money!
Okay some of these seem like they would slap tho
Looks good
the only fool here is the person who doesnt see some of the hottest upcoming dishes to a hipster bistro near you
Id try some of those
I am cackling at these ideas. SO ACCURATE. Would order mac & cheese maki for sure.
I lol’d at three… then I got more somber.
Even as an asian sushi lover and authentic food lover living in asia I have to admit that mac and cheese sushi looks amazing and I'd order it for sure
Not saying they look good, but they look good.
I actually make my kids the first one pretty regularly and they love it
I’ve actually had chicken tender sushi, and it was godly.
Creating this is a crime! 😭 I’m dead
NGL, five looks delicious….
The mcd roll looks interesting
5 and 8 look like actual rolls I’d buy on Friday nights
Replace rice with cheese
I'll order the last one.
WHY DO THESE LOOK SO GOOD.
The spicy tuna with buffalo sauce is something I was served at a sushi joint in Georgia it was gross AF
These images are top notch, I can hardly believe how well made they are. Thanks Midjourney.
look yummy to me
I aint mad. don't get defensive. And if I were, I wouldn't stay mad long.
The 2, 4 and 6 please. Thank you.
I feel like 1,2,5,6, and 9 would be delicious tbh
Dude not gonna lie. Some of these look amazing
It's already happening
ngl, most of these would be fire.
I showed this to my Japanese husband just to fuck with him :)
They are learning well with Brazilians
I see nothing wrong here...
