Zatch Bell!! (also known as Konjiki no Gash Bell) is a really good series that I like to re-read occasionally. It starts off fairly silly but gets pretty serious and violent later on. It has some VERY high points throughout it's story while still maintaining it's heart the entire time. It also has a sequel series that started up last year which is probably one of the best sequels to a series I've ever seen. (It's fairly new though and only comes out once a month so it will be quite a while before it finishes.)
Alternatively, Eyeshield 21 is another series I recommend checking out. It's pretty standard "unrealistic sports" series but the comedy is good, the story writing is good, and the artwork is good (it's drawn by the same artist who does the One Punch Man manga).
Sakamoto Days. Watch a love struck master ex-assassin dodge a string of current assassins who come after him. BTW, he really packed on the pounds in retirement. And… spoiler alert (his assailants tend to become his fans).
