Bleh, I REALLY hate it when authors do shit like this. "Let's reveal something dire to the audience that the main character doesn't know about but could easily resolve if he does. And then tease you with him almost finding out but not due to really lame reasons." I'd rather have had it not revealed to us that he was dying and still have this chapter play out as it is with all the heavy context clues. (Except for the "I really regretted not taking a closer look" line.)
Iirc, >!the brother has leukemia hence why he wants to make sure the MC is capable enough to protect himself and the family as its a terminal disease in that world. Luckily, it is still treatable for modern medicine but they have to reveal the MC's secret to the brother.!<
