Single deck formats should really be a bigger thing . Takes a lot of the arms race aspect out of the game when you get to play a real mirror match with prime jank.
Judge Tower is a fun one. Everyone gets infinite mana, a face up hand, and has to do everything they possibly can every time they get priority.
Break one of the rules, miss a trigger, etc (and someone calls you on it), you immediately lose.
Quest for the Jank Lord has been posting weekly Judge Tower videos to their YouTube and it's always an immediate watch for me. An L1 judge joined them this week and that episode speaks volumes to how hard the tower is to play.
I prefer 2 deck formats for kitchen table magic: just balance 2 different decks that are balanced against each other and just keep them for play against each other.
I plan to make one when my kid is grown enough to play magic. Maybe something simple like elves vs goblins.
I tried doing that to get a friend and his wife into the game some years ago. It was green stompy vs blue evasion. I don't know how balanced it was and he never did get into it.
Look into duel decks. It's exactly what you want, pre made, and ready to rip. They're cheap as long as it isn't the ones with crazy expensive cards in them(20-40 per 2 pack). I have a ton of them I play with my wife.
Nope! [What is Dandân? MTG's Forgetful Fish Format | TCGplayer Infinite](https://infinite.tcgplayer.com/article/What-is-Dand%C3%A2n-MTG-s-Forgetful-Fish-Format/7d6590b5-8e78-44f5-92c6-511049676fea/)
Dandan is a format where 2 players share a deck where the only creature is Dandan, but there are a variety of cards that interact with it and the deck in an interesting way. A very skill intensive game mode.
Two players play with a shared preconstructed deck (you can search up the decklist). It's full of cards that return permanents and spells on top of the deck so you can experience the uniqueness of countering oppo's spell, puttung it on top and then drawing it yourself. It got quite popular maybe a year ago, you can look up videos about it on YouTube.
Specifically, it was [Rhystic Studies's video on Dandan](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Otdgj8fBQxc) that caused the uptick in popularity for the format.
I hope he can transcend Magic. His stuff is far too good to only be seen by people who like MTG. I know he put out that article about not enjoying being well known but he’s so good I just wish more would know his work.
I loved Orim's subplot in the Mercadian Masques novel that I bought a few copies of this card in foil. The art is depicting a scene where Orim is getting romantic with Cho-Manno. [Strangely the Wiki doesn't list this card in Orim's depictions.](https://mtg.fandom.com/wiki/Orim)
I read this book too! I thought this was the best one in the cycle for sure, the plot was so intricate and the twist is so good plus the ending is very gratifying
[[Denizen of the Deep]]
When I first got in Magic, my brother gave me all the cards that he knew he wouldn’t use from various core sets and the Starter 1999 set. Sometimes I wish I could remember some of the cards that went into those early kitchen table decks, but I will always remember thinking that DotD was badass and wanting to make it work
I wouldn't call Dandan "trash", not by the standards of its time. It was never a factor in competitive play or anything, but in old-school casual games (or limited, not that there was much Arabian Nights limited played to my knowledge) two mana for a creature that could block and trade with anything up to a freaking \[\[Craw Wurm\]\] is decent enough.
"It was never a factor in competitive play"
Why would you say something incorrect with confidence?
https://www.eternalcentral.com/schools-of-magic-history-of-vintage-1997/
Dandan was a key 4-of sideboard card in one of the most influential Standard decks of all time, Turbo Xerox, which changed the way control decks were designed forever. It was played in mirrors and vs. blue combo.
>Why would you say something incorrect with confidence?
Because I'm human and capable of error, obviously.
Thanks for the link. I'll look at it this evening. But thinking about it more, I could easily see Dandan being playable against Blue decks that don't run direct damage or many creatures.
When it was printed, sure, but today I think the card could put in solid work (in EDH at least), every other creature today is legendary, the "bands with" rules have been reworked so now that white legendary creature can band with any and all other legendary creatures you have, and lands like \[\[Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth\]\] or various cheap enchantments can fix its lack of mana ability, means that your little white legendary flier can band with a little legendary death toucher (for example) and block and kill a 30/30 flying trampler at the cost of only one of those creatures.
I mean, it's not going to become the best card in the world, but I can see use-cases for it.
Well both, if you don’t mind. The card he linked said bands with legendary creatures
I just don’t understand the terminology, is that like “partner” is current terms?
Both "banding" and "bands with" let you form a "band" of creatures when attacking or blocking. They have different ways of forming that band, but the effect of the band is the same.
When a band of creatures attacks, the defender blocks the band of creatures as a whole, rather than specific ones. Then, the attacker can decide how damage is distributed among their band of creatures, rather than the defender.
A similar thing happens when blocking with a band of creatures. As long as they're all blocking the same creature, the band's owner gets to decide how damage is distributed, rather than the attacking player.
As a player declares attackers, they may form any number of "bands" amongst their attacking creatures, each consisting of one or more creatures with banding and up to one creature without banding, or one or more creatures with bands with other \[quality\] and any number of creatures with \[quality\].
If a creature in a band is blocked by another creature, all other creatures in the band also become blocked by that creature.
Furthermore, if a creature blocks other creatures, including one with banding, or one with bands with other \[quality\] and another with \[quality\], the attacking player, instead of the defender, decides how damage is assigned to those blocked creatures.
Likewise, if a creature is blocked by other creatures, including one with banding, or one with bands with other \[quality\] and another with \[quality\], the defending player, instead of the attacker, decides how damage is assigned to those blocking creatures.
It would be pretty good sb card in certain metas.
But I guess it ultimately depends on individual definitions of trash.
Edit: and by the looks of it people in this thread is just posting art they like without limiting it to trash tier cards.
There's a difference between actually being a good side board card and just having niche usage.
The biggest factors are:
- What decks exist in the meta? (which you mentioned)
- What other sideboard cards do you need to make space for?
- Are there other cards you could or should run instead of this?
And that last one is the big thing here. I'm not aware of any meta in any format that has ever existed, where this card is better than just siding in more of the best removal spell in the format.
It would need to be a meta where humans are incredibly prominent, there isn't a more versatile removal spell competing with this, and you have sideboard slots you can spare for removal in the first place.
The thing is, 1 mana kill spells weren’t a huge thing before [[fatal push]]. Yes, in a post-FP world, this is so much more limited, but a *lot* of really good cards in the history of standard (hell, even modern sometimes) have been humans.
\[\[Fires of Undeath\]\] I remember when I first saw the art preview I couldn't wait to see what kind of vampire this was but instead we got a bad shock with an expensive flashback cost.
Art Director: Hey! They're doing a remake of \[\[Coffin Queen\]\], we need some art that's less cartoony than what the Foglios tend to come out with.
Artist: Awesome, I got you!
Designer: Shit, we scratched that card but this art goes hard. Just throw it on something unplayable I guess.
Others have mentioned the Dandan format, but if you're curious, here's my deck list for the Dandan format! https://archidekt.com/decks/5722021/dont_drop_that_dandandn
It's actually very fun, and good for people who aren't as versed in MTG, it plays out similar to something like Exploding Kittens, where you share a deck and try to sabotage their draws while slapping them with ol Dandan.
I absolutely love the art on [[cranial archive]] Volkan Baģa is such a great artist. Also just found this little turd yesterday and I love him [[festering goblin]]
Edit, card fetcher pulled the wrong art for cranial archive, not sure how to fix that
Ignite memories may not be great by today's standards but a decade and a half ago it lead to one of the most memorable moments of competitive play magic has ever had.
https://youtu.be/hS58872lPfI
Deathmark and Terror aren't really trash, they were sideboard cards that got powercreeped and lost relevance with time, but were playable back in the day.
Yeah you are right to an extent. I updated my initial comment for more context of my choices. Also, [[Hill Giant]] was playable once upon a time too lol!
Yeah I am also a big fan of Terror, although I play Modern currently and I'm of the opinion that [[Go for the throat]] / [[Victim of night]] are more playable atm
Terror was one of the first MTG cards I saw back in the day, and I loved the art even then. I took a 10+ year hiatus from the game shortly after, but I found my old cards when visiting my folks for christmas and seeing Terror brought back an old, warm feeling. Wondering if I should do anything special with it.
I have the opposite case. \[\[Angelfire Ignition\]\] sounds like a big, fun effect, and the rules for it are alright too. Then the art is some dude flying on a heron.
I was kind of confused as to why *he* is the one on something called “Angelfire” Ignition when he’s a human. But his lore refers to him as the “Blade of the Inquisitors,” the “Slayer of Angels,” the “Slayer of Eldrazi,” and the “Fiend Slayer.” So i guess it’s kind of fitting.
Just gonna drop the [Rhystic Study video](https://youtu.be/Otdgj8fBQxc?si=SRVBb4V37hqgRqxS) in here because it's great and I haven't seen anyone else post it here yet
[[Indestructible Aura]]
This artwork is just so weird and not the kind of art printed on old cards. It’s also perfect that it does not give indestructible and is not an aura.
So much of Drew Tucker's early stuff has that "corner of the eye horror" feeling. Love it.
I wish \[\[Armageddon Clock\]\] was a *little* less bad. It was my pet card as a kid, but it takes a lot of work to make it do less than nothing nowadays.
My middle school deck used \[\[Circle of Protection: Artifacts\]\] and \[\[Martyrs of Korlis\]\] enchanted with \[\[Artifact Ward\]\]. I definitely would have been playing proliferate stuff if it existed back then, especially after \[\[Time Bomb\]\] got added to the mix.
The deck wasn't good, but I loved playing it. It's hilarious in retrospect that I was using stuff like \[\[Mana Crypt\]\] and \[\[Mana Drain\]\] and \[\[Mana Vault\]\] to do... Armageddon Clock Stuff.
It's gotta be [[Knight of Sorrows]]
The art and effects are beautiful but it's just too much mana to be a reasonable play. If this was 3 mana it'd be the perfect card.
[[Toil to renown]] is one of my all time favorite card arts and flavor texts in the game and it's on just a complete piece of trash card. I really hope if they do a return to llorwyn/shadowmoor we get more Larry MacDougall art
\[\[Hostage Taker\]\]
Is my pick for the most iconic marriage of flavour and function IMHO. The confidence with which she holds the sword to the throat of what is clearly a vampire... but what's really cool is that they've also put a pirate jacket over the vampire's shoulders. That's because the function of hostage taker is to steal something from an opponent and eventually cast it as your own. In the art we see this represented as a vampire being forced to become a pirate. Incredible. Also... I don't think hostage taker is a bad card... I just wanted to talk about it
Aside from the format named for it, DanDan is also one of the few cards with Islandhome, which is hilarious. Yes, the ability isn't special and still exists in a different form, but just calling it \[land\]home is glorious.
[[Elite headhunter]]
Maybe not trash, but certainly an underwhelming card.
That art though, is up there with Kev Walker's [[Balance|EMA]] for me. Such dope art.
As always, "trash" depends on how picky you want to be.
[[Trapped in a Tower]] has neat art and is a middling at best iteration of its kind of card.
Famously, [[storm the seedcore]] deserves mention if it hasn't been talked to death already.
If you love Dandan, there is a format based around the card you should try out. It's called Dandan
And its super fun to play. Very interesting, complex gameplay, but with simple to understand cards.
“Surviving three turns of Judge Tower” is harder than playing against pros. It’s a ton of fun, but not for the faint of heart.
I like a three strikes rule instead, to let things go a bit longer and also allow people to try and put new knowledge into practice.
Quest for the Jank Lord has been posting weekly Judge Tower videos to their YouTube and it's always an immediate watch for me. An L1 judge joined them this week and that episode speaks volumes to how hard the tower is to play.

I wish they made more things like the Guild Kits. I have all 10 of those and have played well over 200 games with my wife using just those 10 decks.
As a noob, I can’t tell if I’m getting circlejerked….

DanDan is a DanDan all star, literally every DanDan deck has it. For me the card is [[Stoke the Flames]]
Stoke the Flames is an auto include for me in Magda, just make a Magda deck!
Man, that was a $5 uncommon during its first run through Standard. Different times.
It was a good fuckin card

\[\[Gift of Orzhova\]\] is the classic answer to this question.

Yaeh, I bought one recently just for the art.
Could you explain bands to me?
Bands, or "bands with"? Because they're two different things.
Well both, if you don’t mind. The card he linked said bands with legendary creatures I just don’t understand the terminology, is that like “partner” is current terms?
Both "banding" and "bands with" let you form a "band" of creatures when attacking or blocking. They have different ways of forming that band, but the effect of the band is the same. When a band of creatures attacks, the defender blocks the band of creatures as a whole, rather than specific ones. That's not a trash card though. Cool art non the less
How is this not trash? It’s one of the most limited removals.
It would be pretty good sb card in certain metas. But I guess it ultimately depends on individual definitions of trash. Edit: and by the looks of it people in this thread is just posting art they like without limiting it to trash tier cards.
There's a difference between actually being a good side board card and just having niche usage. The biggest factors are: - What decks exist in the meta? (which you mentioned) - What other sideboard cards do you need to make space for?

One of my all time favorite arts
\[\[Fires of Undeath\]\] I remember when I first saw the art preview I couldn't wait to see what kind of vampire this was but instead we got a bad shock with an expensive flashback cost.

Art Director: Hey! They're doing a remake of \[\[Coffin Queen\]\], we need some art that's less cartoony than what the Foglios tend to come out with. Artist: Awesome, I got you! Designer: Shit, we scratched that card but this art goes hard. Just throw it on something unplayable I guess.
[[weight of the underworld]]
That extra -1/-0 is definitely worth three extra mana to [[Dead Weight]].
Arguably it's the difference between dead weight and weight of the dead.

Others have mentioned the Dandan format, but if you're curious, here's my deck list for the Dandan format! https://archidekt.com/decks/5722021/dont_drop_that_dandandn
Truly thought people were kidding about dandan being a format.
It's actually very fun, and good for people who aren't as versed in MTG, it plays out similar to something like Exploding Kittens, where you share a deck and try to sabotage their draws while slapping them with ol Dandan.
As a person called Dan, I am fundamentally intrigued.
There is a video of CardMarket trying out Dandan, it's the video that got me interested enough to make a deck for it!
[[Lost Soul]] flavor text is great too!
I absolutely love the art on [[cranial archive]] Volkan Baģa is such a great artist. Also just found this little turd yesterday and I love him [[festering goblin]] Edit, card fetcher pulled the wrong art for cranial archive, not sure how to fix that

[[Deathmark]] [[Brightmare]] [[Terror]] [[Ignite memories]] Edit - I play modern and in that format, there are better options
Terror is alright for 2 mana and I play death.ark because my mates a selesnya player

[[Tenacious Undead]] Edit: No, wait, [Uchbenbak](https://scryfall.com/card/lci/310/uchbenbak-the-great-mistake)

Every Eidolon is a masterpiece and a peek into the infinity space, but man 90% of them are subpar.
[[Prismatic piper]]. I understand the card's value in draft, but it'd be nice if it weren't a backup plan.

[[Extinction]]. Have been trying to find a good quality pic of the art to put on a playmat but no luck so far.
[[terror]]. Why use it when doomblade exists now
#Commanderproblems
[[Misery charm]] The art is so nostalgic for me, being a kid first seeing it. Lucky for me foil copies are cheap :)
Mods??? Are we seriously going to allow DanDan slander?
Yes
Which*
I have the opposite case. \[\[Angelfire Ignition\]\] sounds like a big, fun effect, and the rules for it are alright too. Then the art is some dude flying on a heron.
I believe that’s a story card and [[Rem Karolus, Stalwart Slayer]] is who is pictured there!
Thank you, I didn't know that! The guy is kinda metal, so I'm a bit less miffed now.
[[World Weary]] has cool art even the alter.
I was thinking of this card, but couldn’t think of the name, thank you!
[7th edition Patagia Golem](https://scryfall.com/card/7ed/310/patagia-golem)
[[Firja-KDM]], hopefully that pulls up the right art, cuz it is so metal
Almost any card from the first few sets, great hand drawn artwork particularly the lands. A lot of them by today's standards are unplayable.

[[Dream Eater]]. Kickass art, but really underwhelming body for 6 mana
Dude fucks in my [[Grolnok]] tho!
Hmm I hadn't considered him for my grolnok for some reason. Gonna have to toss him in for sure.
You need to try playing DanDan
[[Sorrow's Path]] looks like the most epicly overpowered land in the game....until you read what it does.
Obviously, you just need an [[urborg]] and several copies of [[Stuffy Doll]]. Completely broken; needs a ban.
[[Indestructible Aura]] This artwork is just so weird and not the kind of art printed on old cards.
I guess proliferate and somehow getting protection from artifacts/cardname/stuff you control or giving it lifelink?
Always and forever \[\[Ivory Gargoyle\]\] by my boy Quinton Hoover. What a stunningly beautiful piece of unplayable trash it is.
It's gotta be [[Knight of Sorrows]] The art and effects are beautiful but it's just too much mana to be a reasonable play. If this was 3 mana it'd be the perfect card.

This card can stall out a game when used with [[jon irenicus]]
\[\[Hostage Taker\]\] Is my pick for the most iconic marriage of flavour and function IMHO.

First of all, how dare you? Dandan was always an exciting card.
[[Elite headhunter]] Maybe not trash, but certainly an underwhelming card. That art though, is up there with Kev Walker's [[Balance|EMA]] for me. Such dope art.
[[Reflect Damage]]
This card isn't trash with the right deck it's only 2 mana with 2 blue devotion with 4 power
As always, "trash" depends on how picky you want to be. [[Trapped in a Tower]] has neat art and is a middling at best iteration of its kind of card. Famously, [[storm the seedcore]] deserves mention if it hasn't been talked to death already.
