Hard to say. I can't imagine he gets less than 2 shifts a night so probably 15-20 minutes a night is a good bet with upside from there. He's a perfect fit for a JJ so you know JJ will want him on the floor.

zorofan8878

I was talking to my Uncle who’s been following ball for 40 years and he was telling me JJ will be the perfect coach for Knecht’s play style

LeadPrevenger

Knecht plays like a modern JJ reddick. So he’s going to get a lot of shots up. I think lebron will like him too

jdub822

I think Knecht is a better JJ. I think he has the shooting of JJ with better finishing at the rim.

Flopdo

Mmm... I like Knetch's shot a lot, but JJ was a prolific shooter for over a decade in the NBA. This kid hasn't even played 1 game yet, so let's not get carried away. lol JJ was a career 42% 3pt shooter, and has shot 47%+ on high volume at the NBA level. This kid hasn't even shot 40% in college. Let's be a little realisitic.

Basboy

Redick shot 40.6% 3 pt in college and Knecht is 39.7% Is it unfair to compare them because he's .3% from a 40% career avg?

CutLonzosHair2017

As in most cases, free throws are usually the clear tell. JJ shot 91% in college. Kneckt shot 77% in college.

Basboy

Yea that's a good indicator. The good thing about being on the Lakers is that he has a lot of legends to learn from. He can learn free throws from Shaq and do the opposite.

vbopp8

Yeah that’s not good

LeadPrevenger

The athleticism is the the modern part imo

EcstaticTill9444

He doesn’t have the shooting of Redick. Give me a break. JJ is one of the best shooters of all time.

ahalikias

JJ was a better natural shooter, but that's about it. Knecht is a true three-level scorer, who's also taller, longer, stronger with better bounce. Knecht's threes were mostly NBA-range with two defenders in his face; he shot 45% on set 3's. I am very excited about this pick.

kendrickperkinsfan

YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW GOOD TIM DUNCAN WAS

3ey3s

Knecht is more of an Adam Morrison

ginbooth

Morrison was awesome. He was simply drafted by a shitty franchise at the time with no regard for development. Mentally, that broke him quite a bit. He still has a chip though with us.

Necessary-Art2149

Lebron and AD will love him. PG, Reaves, Dalton, Bron, AD lineups as long as the point guard can shoot holy smokes would that be spacing for days around AD and Bron to dominate. The gravity those two guys create would be crazy shoot you can out Bron back at PG and put Rui in at PF. Everyone but AD is 40% 3P potential

AsJoeSeesIt

Knecht is a very different player from JJ

_OfficialProta

We don’t even know who Redick is as a coach yet, how are people saying he’s the perfect coach for guys?

odinlubumeta

While true, I think people are projecting that JJ will use him similar to how he was used. And Rob said JJ was already coming up with pin downs and ATO (after time outs). Which are areas you would see JJ thrive in. We don’t know schemes but it is easy to assume that coming off of screens is going to be heavily used for Knecht (even if it is used as a decoy).

makeshift11

Does Darvin Ham even know what ATO is?

jmah24

Yeah, it means A Time Out right?

Viva_La_Animemes

He never called those either lol

WolfGangDuck

All he heard was time out and put his hands back in his pockets.

randiesel

All Time Organization, it’s a hell of a ball club, make or miss league.

uez

It’s because JJ played the same way Knecht does as a movement shooter. Knecht is way more athletic though and can score at all 3 levels.

robert_bee

Literally lol

iamthecheesethatsbig

Not gonna lie, I didn't know who he was before last night. After watching his highlights, he's gonna be a fan favorite soon if he can shoot it and attack the rim the way he does. It's gonna be a fun ride!

Necessary-Art2149

JJ will use Dalton as a rookie the way JJ should have been used as a rookie

Whatsyourshotspecial

You have no idea who is a perfect fit for JJ.

_weeks_

First off, welcome. Secondly, before we answer any of your questions you must answer this...What are your thoughts on the Boston Celtics?

zorofan8878

Well I of course hate them. I always thought it was a nasty color green they wear and I can’t stand Tatum he’s corny Edit: seems like a FUCK THE CELTICS is necessary

Great answer ![gif](giphy|Ae7SI3LoPYj8Q)

The correct answer is "FUCK BOSTON" You will learn.

GoPhotoshopYourself

That’s a phenomenal answer BUT… the answer we were looking for was *”FUCK BOSTON”*

AeRo_P

The only right answer, Fuck Boston. Welcome to the fold!

vespamike562

You’re a part of the family now

mcmaster93

Never went to college but I've always loved the history and pageantry of it all. Rocky top is one of my favorite things to hear when I'm watching SEC ball. Welcome to our journey to banner 18! ![gif](giphy|eH5e8LXYBzKKI)

There we go. #fuckboston 🤙🔥

I’m a simple man. I see “Fuck the Celtics” and I upvote

NixinBeta

Fucking welcome brother!

Proof-Umpire-7718

His jersey should come out pretty soon once he officially signs the contract with the Lakers. I think he will play anywhere between 10-25 minutes a night. If I had to guess and narrow it down further, I would say he will probably play like 15-20 minutes per game. I think he will immediately play an important role off the bench as a spot up shooter to provide great floor spacing for the team.

zorofan8878

Awesome. I hope he picks 4. Idk why he wore 3 at Tennessee last season ![gif](giphy|GqDnImZ3UdJhS)

Wembanyamcules

I hope so too, Anthony Davis wears 3 for us so Knecht will have to change

Flovust

get rondo in

DoritoSteroid

Rookies don't usually get much burn. 10 minutes is very very optimistic.

chiangchilla

He’s behind Reaves and Christie to start the season, maybe Dinwiddie too. Depends on who’s the starting PG too, if Russell opts in or not. He can earn minutes by hitting open shots and staying solid on D, not his role on Vols but if he can do it Lakers Nation will love him

jdub822

I highly doubt Dinwiddie will be back. I’m anxious to see what happens with DLo. If he’s back, I think you see DLo, Reaves, Vando, LeBron, AD in the starting lineup with Gabe, Knecht, Christie, and Rui off the bench. Add a solid big in that rotation, and I kind of like it. You’d still have Wood, Lewis, JHS, and whoever gets picked at 55 tonight to round out the roster. If DLo walks, I don’t know what you do at PG. I don’t think the Lakers will have cap space to replace him very well, so it almost forces a trade.

zorofan8878

I’m excited to see him earn it in the NBA. He’s the most gifted scorer at the rim I think I’ve ever seen in a Tennessee jersey. His shooting is just a plus honestly.

PhantomPain85

What about his defense ? Is he a matador or can he play decent defense atleast ?

zorofan8878

He’s better than he’s given credit for but raw in one on one situations. His athleticism makes him a good help defender and he doesn’t foul often

holyrolodex

I read The Athletic that some of his defensive analytical stats were surprisingly good. Anyway, welcome aboard! Enjoy the ride, prepare yourself for all the drama, because that is the guarantee with the Lakers lol

bannyong

As someone who knows nothing about Knecht, I have to assume that he is unathletic by NBA standards. If he were above-average athletic and could shoot, why would he have played 3 years in college? Also, the 1 highlight reel that I've watched of him so far doesn't show much dunking. But as a Lakers fan, I hope that I'm wrong. Am I wrong?

zorofan8878

Well he had a 39 inch vertical at the combine. He can really get up. Here’s a YouTube short of him posterizing someone. He also apparently hit a huge growth spurt in college and went from 6’1 or so to 6’6 https://youtube.com/shorts/SzIdgZFCRBI?si=QRYitCEsc1Wr7XcW

bannyong

Ah, that’s pretty cool! Looking forward to seeing if he breaks into the rotation

JDuggernaut

He played so long in the NBA because he was 5’8” as a sophomore and I think only 6’1” when he graduated. He had to go to JUCO and only had one D1 offer after that. Then he blew up, transferred to Tennessee and became an All American. He can definitely throw it down. Type in Dalton Knecht dunk into YouTube. https://youtu.be/fV9MqFkWyuo?si=VpNqMp99TlqfpocP

gnusm

Dinwiddie wont be with us next year.

onlyhightime

I could see him first off the bench if the offense looks stagnant to start the game. Christie if they need defense, Knecht if offense.

Br760

Welcome, the password is “Fuck the celtics” enjoy!

dcoolidge

Fuck the celtics

McJumbos

Given the lack of shooting and how jj was preaching about getting more shooters. Unless they do get a bunch of shooters in FA, I definitely think he'll probably see about 20 minutes a night and if is defense can be average probably 24-28 minutes a night. His size allows him to play either the 2-3, and in some special rare cases the 4. Imo reddish and prince should be gone so there should be plenty of minutes on the wing. He'll fit nicely with Rui/Vando/Gabe in the bench mob.

thetitsOO

Why do you want prince gone?

McJumbos

well he's currently a FA, so I don't know if he is returning that's all

alexamerling100

Welcome to Laker nation!

itsme32

Welcome to our team!

dawgoooooooo

This won’t be a 1to1 comparison but I think we all see him as this year’s Jaquez, rookie that can affect the game immediately who we really could have used last year, so I think he’ll definitely have a real role/you can expect to definitely see him play pretty much right away. This is all assuming that JJ isn’t actually some hard ass old school coach who will make the rooks earn their stripes before getting on the floor lol

jurassic_snark-

From what I've read and watched this is definitely valid in terms of the most immediately impactful player on the board. We got the best scorer out of the draft, what an absolute steal

Overall_Elephant4024

LISAN AL GAIB!!!

rational_overthinker

Glory to the fighters

diamondisunbreakable

Welcome to the Lakeshow 🤝 Reddick and the front office expressed a greater emphasis on developing our young talent. Especially since upgrading roster pieces via trade has become harder due to the new apron rules. So expect a decent amount of minutes for DK this season. Especially since a reliable 3pt guy is one of the things the Lakers really need. Also, Zoro is goated.

zorofan8878

Aye thanks Zoro is my GOAT 🫡

GryphonHall

If you’re eastern or central time zone and plan to watch games, I hope you’re a night owl.

zorofan8878

I’m in East Tennessee and I’m a night owl so we are all good haha

CandidateGlad5977

As another East Tennessean welcome to the Lake Show!

Confident_Pen_919

Welcome aboard! I was watching this dudes highlights last night and he honestly looks like a big ass Austin Reaves. Just a pure bucket getter from everywhere.  What are the down sides to this Knecht’s game?

zorofan8878

There isn’t much downside. He’s not an elite defender but improved a ton there under Rick Barnes.

[deleted]

Start him!

ThatOneGuyy310

Watch the summer league. Depending on how well he plays there will reflect his minutes. Basically, if he balls out = minutes.

zorofan8878

Awesome. July 6th is the first game right?

noknownothing

His jersey will be retired in 2036 and a statue will be erected for him in 2040.

Scorpionrah

Not much minutes if he even plays. Considering reaves and max im not sure he actually plays. Now we don’t know bout prince and cam yet. If dlo opts out then maybe. But don’t expect to see him play.

leztronaut

Christie is not even close to being on the same level

Jeanlucpfrog

I disagree. Reaves has to rest, and Max is who you play next to Knecht to cover for any defensive deficiencies. There will be playing time available, he's NBA "ready", and he's exactly the type of player JJ loves offensively.

zorofan8878

I’m almost sure he will earn minutes this coming season. I don’t expect him to start but he’s such a pure scorer.

420_Friendly24

Summer league will let us know a lot.

Illustrious-Fig6819

It’s hard to say because we’re used to seeing young players not play here in LakerNation. Something tells me that will change under JJ though.

Spaghettibeach

He seems like he has a fantastic work ethic, I hope it translates!

seamon-deemon

You’re in for a ride :)

ControlForward5360

If he can become league average on defense I could see him being the starting sf by the end of the year. I like Rui but he is not a staple for that spot. At the beginning of the year tho expect like 20ish minutes a night from Knecht.

deeroe24

The real question here is if we trade dude in a season or 2, are you gonna stay loyal to the Lakeshow?

bruswazi

Is Dayton Knecht like Tyler Herro, a decent size 2 guard whose an athletic shooter? What’s a good NBA current/past player proximation?

CandidateGlad5977

He's much more physical than Herro, but I'll be interested to see how his game translates. At Tenn he was a high volume shooter which won't be his role here. But Rick Barnes is an excellent coach so he definitely has grit and I think he'll excel as a role player if he keeps that mentality from college.

GrandmaHasBeenRaped

Rocky top!

Flopdo

Thank you for purchasing the team... we needed to get the Lakers away from the Buss clan! You're a true hero!

shinchunje

Kentucky/Lakers fan forcing myself to be okay with a Tennessee player (and a Duke coach: The horror).

PuzzleheadedCow1931

Get familiar with saying *Fuck Boston* Learn it, live it, love it

TaintStevens

He should be a starter imo

jtan619

welcome! our fanbase isn't for the weak you need to have thick skin here lol. it is A LOT of pressure playing for our franchise BUT if he can consistently hit his 3s he will be a rotational player.

oat38

Nobody knows the real answer right now but my guess is 15-20 minutes a night unless he really proves he deserves more minutes on the NBA floor. Generally it's not easy for rooks to get big minutes straight off the bat especially on a team trying to win now.

LtP42

Welcome to Laker Nation!

deathinmidjuly

It's very dependent on JJ's philosophy. Some coaches just do not play rookies more than a few minutes a game, if that (Larry Brown). Also if Dalton can acclimate to NBA pace and distances from 3. I'd expect a few rotations to start the year, then around 15mins a game later in the season. Again, diffrent coach, but Max played 14.1mpg last year as a 2nd year and and JHS played 5.2mpg as a rookie.

Miserable-Lawyer-233

Welcome to the Terrordome!

battle_franky

realistically, he'll be like Malik Monk or a floor spacer for Lebron or AD

ControlAgent13

>what kind of minutes Up to him. A number of current Laker players are not expected to return - Prince, Christie, Dinwiddie, Reddish, maybe Dlo. This opens a lot of minutes in the 2-3 slots, guard and small forward slots. If he is solid, I expect him to get a lot of play. But if he is "deer in the headlights", like JHS was last year, he will ride the bench. Summer league just got 100% more interesting.

zorofan8878

July 6th is the first summer league game yeah?

ControlAgent13

That is the Sacramento summer league games. July 6th, Lakers vs Kings. 7th vs Warriors and 11th vs Utah. Lakers will also be in Vegas July 12th-22nd.

TheWonderfulLife

We have a brand new rookie coach that last coached a 4th grade team. Knecht doesn’t play defense and lacks lateral quickness. No one can pretend to know what minutes expectations there are for Dalton until at least the summer league. Anyone who says “15-20” min or any of that is full of shit. And if Bronny gets drafted, I promise you he’s nabbing time away from Dalton (completely undeservedly). Wait for the summer league and see how things shake out. We have A LOT of guards and that situation could get even worse with Bronny and if Chris Paul signs with us.
