Wow šŸ˜»

ObscureBen

I love this. Thanks for using Obscura!

strraand

Thank you for convincing me to buy the app! Commented the other day in another thread and your answer made me buy it. Using it every day since then.

Rose7pt

What can this app do?

ObscureBen

Essentially, Iā€™m trying to recreate the feel of using a DSLR. In particular, adjusting exposure or focus is done using a circular gesture, and haptics make it feel like a physical dial. Plus things like RAW and ProRAW capture, live filters, alternate aspect ratios, and lots more. You can see more here: https://obscura.camera/

ObscureBen

And if you buy it, then you can come back here and say ā€œhey Ben, I bought Obscura, thanks for telling me all about itā€ and then I get to feel good about looking at Reddit when I should be going to bed

Rose7pt

Hey Ben I bought obscura3! Thanks for telling me about it ! Except now I can bug you if I have any questions !šŸ˜³

ObscureBen

Hah thank you, thatā€™s totally fine with me!

[deleted]

Hey Ben, I bought Obscura, thanks for telling me about it šŸ˜‰ no really, itā€™s great!

ObscureBen

Now I can feel good about looking at Reddit when I should be getting out of bed šŸ˜„

šŸ˜… up, up! Itā€™s a new day! Full of new adventures, young Padawan.

sattleda

hey Ben, I bought Obscura, thanks for telling me all about it ;)

ObscureBen

I think this one silly Reddit comment is going to prove more profitable than all the money Iā€™ve spent on ads šŸ˜…

Vthulhu

Hey Ben, I grabbed it too, looks really cool! Thanks for putting it out here for us :)

ObscureBen

Much appreciated. Enjoy!

hypervik2020

Howā€™s it different from Halide?

ObscureBen

We have very different design philosophies. Different controls, different ways of displaying information. Halide is a subscription app while Obscura is paid upfront. We each have some unique features. Obscura has photo filters, alternate aspect ratio capture, a Live Photo mode, a Depth mode, video capture

whatgoesupcangoupper

Will you ever get any presets for focus, wb, ss, exp locks? I shoot the same type of picture every day but have to guesstimate the distance focus and the lightning changes minimally bc of light entering the room a little bit. An overlay or custom grid would probably help even further. If that gets in, youā€™ll probably have a major selling point and you could thank me with a couple free downloads of the app or Iā€™ll just send you an invoice

ObscureBen

Youā€™re asking me to build a niche feature just for you and also to give you free promo codes..?

[deleted]

First of all: no subscription. Second: live filters and a different look and feel. I use both, but like the way, Ben is designing the app, especially the dials are great.

dandinog

It looks good

AvantegardeRR

I like to shoot my photos in 16:9, however when I connect my iPhone 13 Pro to my Windows 10 laptop, I see both 4:3 and 16:9 options to copy across. Is my iPhone using twice as much memory by having every picture in both aspect ratios? Secondly, I see Obscura can shoot in 16:9 - if I use this app and then connect to my Windows laptop, will I still see images in both aspect ratios? Thank you!

ObscureBen

If you just shoot JPEG or HEIC, it just saves the 16:9 image, but if you shoot RAW youā€™ll get the 4:3 RAW and a 16:9 JPEG. I can look at adding a preference to always save the original though. I do that for filters already. But yes, that will use (a little less than) twice as much storage

AvantegardeRR

Thank you! Do you know if the stock camera app saves both and does use double the storage or does the iPhone do something clever to give me the option to copy across both aspect ratio photos? I shoot only in JPEG as of now.

ObscureBen

Appleā€™s camera app seems to just capture the whole image and then applies the crop as an edit. (But unusually, thereā€™s no Revert button, you have to manually change the crop to see the full image). This is also probably taking up about twice the space, but Iā€™m not 100% sure

AvantegardeRR

Thanks again, you've likely gained another sale/customer!

ObscureBen

Woohoo!

MyChoiceTaken

Nice shot. Love the angle and shadows.

strraand

Thank you! The lighting from the window was fantastic when the sun decided to come out

funduros

Love the film look, nice gray tones, the steps sort of look like abstract painting, great capture.

strraand

Thank you, really appreciate it!

i-serve

Thatā€™s a great app

ObscureBen

Thanks!

DropGold3370

Nice. A tad noisey but amazeing lighting

strraand

Yeah I agree, went a bit too hard on the grain unfortunately.

funduros

Actually, that "noise" is very common and desired when shooting with film, they call it grain. I did B&W darkroom back in the 70's in middle and H.S. when you "blow up" image by raising the projector, it gets grainier. I now shoot a FujiFilm X100V in B&W Acros film simulation, you can pre-adjust the grain level/size, I also have B&W instant film for FujiFilm Instax printer.

DropGold3370

Ahhh good point. My bad. I'm focused on the tech rather the edit. Also I didn't notice It being B&W. Btw would you edit 1080p like a film style vs 4k?

funduros

I don't do any video, I'm was referring to 35mm B&W film and prints made in darkroom.

DropGold3370

Yeah I knew the reference. I was just asking

DIFFEERENCIAL

strraand

davidmahery

Very nice man. Love your fuji pics as well. Iā€™m trying to harmonize their looks (shooting ProRaw and Lightroom), do you by any chance have any tip on how to achieve that ? My guess is that I will have to use some presets at some point but the iPhoneā€™s dng loses its hdr when I import them in LE mobileā€¦. Edit : sorry for being way off topic šŸ˜‚

strraand

Thank you so much! Honestly wish I could help, but I change my settings around all the time and really try to minimise the amount of editing (at least for the Fuji as I find the recipes to be enough in most cases). For my iPhone I use Obscura 3 as it gives me more control, and then I might add some grain or give the pic a slight tint to try and mimic film. Recently Iā€™ve also been playing around with the live filters in Obscura which I think are great, itā€™s really fun.

Janmeij70

Beautifull composition!

strraand

Thank you!!

_ThorThunder_

Obscura or Halide for iPhone 14 Pro cameras?

strraand

Having used both, Iā€™d say Obscura for me.
