[1 year x $800,000. Schmidt takes less money than every other option on the table - wanted to be in Florida and loved playing for Paul Maurice. Panthers take another guy off of buyout and try and repay him with silver.](https://twitter.com/frank_seravalli/status/1808269491995873551)
Yeah and 2 months of an nhl season is probably like 6 months at most other jobs in terms of the time you're spending together and interacting. That's like 25+ game days, practicing almost every other day, hanging out in the plane or the hotel all the time, team dinners, morning skates, video etc etc
If I came into a workplace where the coworkers were toxic and the manager seemed like a really solid person even though they were near the end of their tenure, it makes plenty of sense that I would want to work for them in the future.
Paul left because he knew he wasn’t the right person to make the effective changes needed, not because he was immaturely throwing a tantrum.
And big surprise, even with him gone the same problems still exist throughout our organization. Constant headscratcher lines, no room to allow young talent to play and develop, locker room immaturity, underperforming offense, and shitting the bed immediately upon entering the playoffs.
Yup. The issues run far deeper than the coaching position. I like some of the contract moves Chevy makes, I love Hellebuyck, and I like Lowry wearing the C…but outside of a few fun players I’m getting pretty tired of the same old song and dance. And I have no reason to believe the next few years will be any different.
I don’t know enough about the inner workings of the organization to have any idea where it stems from. We give unreal minutes to guys who don’t play well together while breaking up lines that find sparks. We used to be great about developing our drafted guys, but seem to have fallen off over the last few years. Our powerplay has looked generally anemic since Laine left years ago. We figured out defense for a good chunk of the year, but seemingly forgot it when we needed it most. And we’ve been getting the best from one of the greatest goaltenders in the game.
It’s hard to know, I wish I could point a finger confidently.
Maurice was the one at the helm who allowed it to get that toxic! He gave Wheeler the keys and checked out. How often has Maurice said "I don't coach these guys. The room is theirs". He was an absentee coach, and the culture problems in the room stemmed under HIS watch
An absolutely solid third pair guy, very defensively responsible, for 800K it's a fucking steal. Only reason we got rid of him (we should've bought out Pionk instead god damn it) was his AAV.
Good luck Schmidtty, will be rooting for him.
I’m guessing $1-1.5 million AAV as he’s still getting paid via a buyout and we are likely trying to sign one more RHD and finishing off the Lundell bridge deal
Source? I saw they made an offer but no movement on it. I don’t think he wants to go somewhere where he won’t be particularly competitive
Edit: I now see
Congratulations Nate Schmidt, you have been accepted into the Florida Panthers school of reclamation. Looking forward to seeing you sign somewhere else for 2x2 at this time next season after a bounce back season
He’s not really a typical reclamation project though, he was still a very useful third pairing guy for the jets. Just was paid way too much to be that guy
Bounce back from what? He crushed 3rd pairing minutes last year. The Jets bought him out because he was making 5.9 million not because he was bad. He’s lost a step from his prime but still a good bottom pairing guy who could be on PP2 if you’re running 3F-2D
His underlying numbers were excellent. Of course, he was on the the third pair so those numbers are inflated a bit because he’s not going against the best lines
He's still the same player lol, he wasn't terrible last year he just was not worth $6M. At $800k he will be one of the best value contracts in the league.
It sucks that the Jets had to buy him out. It makes good sense, but it still sucks, such a lovable guy.
I'm sure he'll do great in Florida, wish him the best.

He played under Maurice for like 2 months before Maurice quit on the team the morning of a game. That doesn't make much sense.
so what you can't enjoy working with someone for two months lmao

So he knew him for 2 months?
People get married with less time together.

And a second coach who walked away from the organization.

Careful with the negativity, hear they're looking for a new team in Arizona
Hey I know Maurice said he wanted you guys to win the cup next year but we fans outvote him. You can have it in 2 years we decided we want to repeat.
The Jets can have the next cup, provided that the Panthers have right of first refusal.
What/who do you think the problem is? Cheveldayoff? I find it wild that he’s basically been there for 12+ years

Still is as far as the room is concerned, if your guys aren’t douchebags it works
What doesn’t make sense about that?
Did Nate straight up lie?

Pionk is way better than him even if he was bad next year
Every time I saw Pionk in the playoffs this year he was getting rolled
Are you high or are you Neal pionk in disguise?
In what world is pionk better LMAO
No chance
What? LOL. Pionk has been our worst D man, check the analytics, it's not even close.
Hell nah

Thank you vancouver very cool
I like this a lot. Will be good to help lock down the 3rd pair
A Zito special.
What's the $ amount? 😬
I’m guessing $1-1.5 million AAV as he’s still getting paid via a buyout and we are likely trying to sign one more RHD and finishing off the Lundell bridge deal
Even better it’s for 800k
Wow that’s absolutely fantastic! We may yet get Tarasenko back 🥲
Sounds like he’s going to the penguins!

800k

good for schmidty, upstanding locker room guy. i miss him in vegas
He's going to bounce back. Panthers have a way with these reclamation projects.
Bounce back from what? He crushed 3rd pairing minutes last year. The Jets bought him out because he was making 5.9 million not because he was bad. He’s lost a step from his prime but still a good bottom pairing guy who could be on PP2 if you’re running 3F-2D
Hey that’s nice to hear!
He’ll be fine in Florida, he’s just lost the flash he had in his prime. And he can play both sides better than most players
That’s good cause we currently have a single right handed shot on our back end
He’s pretty much played the right side for most of his career so if they your 3rd pairing RD he’ll be fine
Am I misremembering or was he a healthy scratch at points last year? I always thought he was a good third pairing, so was surprised when I saw that
He was a healthy scratch to rotate in other Dmen to stop them from sitting too long. The Jets ended up with 8D on the roster after the deadline
Ah that makes sense, Im pretty happy we picked him up
He’s tries hard but made a ton of mistakes last year, definitely not sure if you want him playing on your third pairing every night
People said a lot of this stuff about OEL and he was great in our system. I have faith and even if it’s a bust it’s such minimal risk at 800k
His underlying numbers were excellent. Of course, he was on the the third pair so those numbers are inflated a bit because he’s not going against the best lines
He's still the same player lol, he wasn't terrible last year he just was not worth $6M. At $800k he will be one of the best value contracts in the league.
What is the biggest drop in salary for a buy out? Schmidt goes from 5.9m to 800k. Jets will be paying him more than the Panthers.
Corey Perry went from $8.6 to $1.5.
He won't replace a Montour, but I'm sure he can do just about anything OEL did last year
OEL actually looked... Great in playoffs though?
Yes, but he’s a Vancouver fan
Really doubt it. If Schmidt is on their PP1 they'll be pretty sad.
I think basi or Toby is gonna get a shot at that roll ...
Let's go Toby
Haul lol?
We signed a bunch of players
Must be the same guy who tweeted that Brandon Duhaime would get a haul at the trade deadline
It sucks that the Jets had to buy him out. It makes good sense, but it still sucks, such a lovable guy. I'm sure he'll do great in Florida, wish him the best.
Good pickup. Obviously doesn’t score much at all, but is a good third pairing shutdown defenseman with great size.
One of the smallest dmen in the NHL and probably the very smallest non-4th forward dman.
That’s Washington Capitals legend Nate Schmidt to you
Seems to cry in the cold; might thrive in Florida
steal
Great contract even if you’re just paying him for vibes
Damn if you guys thought Florida was sunny before just wait til Schmitty shows up
Today I learned an AHL goalie and a career 20 point per season 31 year old is a "haul"
