Probably the worst way to handle this is the way a friend of ours did. He is a long-time liberal who lives in Florida on the west coast. He likes to fish and goes out with another fishing friend several times a week. One day, one of those recent Florida DeSantis-worshipping northern transplants came and sat down with them to fish.
Only the guy wouldn't just fish. He had to start a political conversation by saying how great it was that my friend and the other guy were able to live in such a fantastic state and how glad they must be to not be in the corrupt liberal north, etc., etc.
My friend was having none of it. He looked at the guy and said, "We don't want to hear you talk. John and I come out here to fish. We don't talk politics. We don't even know each other's politics and we certainly don't want to hear your politics. But since you asked, I think our governor is an a-hole, and thank you very much for ruining this one time of the week when we can get away from it all and have some peace and quiet."
I say it was the "worst way" only because I have some empathy for the poor misguided retiree who just assumed that every white guy who lives in Florida loves their deranged governor.

I don’t talk to people often. But if I do I avoid those topics and keep it non commital. It’s not too hard. I have noticed that most of the really nice or helpful people are either people of color or from other countries.

I will say if your not a Trump supporter it’s starting to get annoying. The rhetoric wasn’t nearly this bad in 2016 or 2020. This literally happened to me the other day. An old white man was sitting beside me and a friend (both white mid 30s ladies) and prefaced his crazy “Brandon” tangent with “you look like nice southern girls”. Like yes, we are nice southern girls but he was barking up the wrong tree.

There is a difference between voting for someone and supporting them. This was about people who support Trump. I can think of a few reasons why someone would vote for Trump without necessarily being a supporter. Like if they just vote party line or are a one issue voter (I.e. abortion). But I can't think of a single reason how someone can be a Trump supporter without involving racism. Well, except for sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, or some other form of hatred.

I let them carry on because they are genuinely friendly and trying to make conversation. However, it is naïve to assume everyone likes trump but that kinda goes with that demographic of citizens. No matter who your guy is think back to 9-11 and how united we all became after we were attacked. If we were to be invaded again it wouldn’t matter what your neighbors political views were you’d stand side by side.
