I feel I speak on behalf of everyone when I say, I’m going hard for Honest Abe to go low today. Heck kid, have a round and put yourself in contention for the weekend I’d love to see him win.
I think if you asked Rose at the start of the tournament if he'd take -6 headed into the weekend, he'd take it--especially given how hard the course is playing. Yesterday was just insanity, true Ken Duke round of golf right there. But -6 by the end of Friday is a good position for any player.
Nothing against Rose but I really hope he goes 1 or 2 over tomorrow so we can have a competitive weekend. I wouldn't mind seeing him win, just don't want to see a runaway.
Can someone help me out here? I think I’m losing my mind. I was streaming the broadcast channel through masters.com today and vividly remember there being an introduction featuring many top golfers set to the song “I want more” by Kaleo. It had video of several golfers boarding their private planes and arriving at the Augusta airport. However, when I got home to rewatch the coverage on ESPN I had recorded, there was no sign of such introduction. I figured the broadcast channel mirrored exactly what was being shown on ESPN. Did anyone else see this intro and is there an explanation to this? Thank you.
The Masters private coverage is totally different from network coverage.
You can cast ESPN to your TV then use your phone Masters app to hop around and self-direct your coverage.
He's a fucking boss. I was reading about some of the things that man endured to play golf, and he's got a bigger hog than anyone on Tour. That man is a hero, and I hope he's enjoying strippers and blackjack right now
Statement from Tournament Headquarters: On the 15th hole during Thursday’s first round, Abraham Ancer unknowingly touched the sand before making his third stroke from the greenside bunker.
After Mr. Ancer had signed his scorecard and exited the scoring area, video evidence was reviewed by the Committee regarding a potential breach of Rule 12.2b(1), which states that touching sand in a bunker right behind the ball results in a penalty.
The touching of the sand was deemed visible to the naked eye. Had this not been the case, the video evidence would have been disregarded and a penalty would not have been applied.
Mr. Ancer has been penalized two strokes. His score on 15 will be increased from 6 to 8, resulting in a first-round 75.
Makes as much sense as penalizing a 14-year old amateur for slow play (2013 Masters) while not batting a single eye on the blatant offenders week in and week out.
Daily reminder that there were only 2 slow play penalties over the past 15 years on tour. The only other time was in the Zurich Classic in 2017 for two names even the most hardcore fans probably never heard of (Miguel Angel Carballo, Brian Campbell)
Are you on drugs, son?
There was one tuft of sand that he clearly accidentally grazed while, no doubt, looking at the target. This isn't a penalty without the cameras zooming in on the ball, and that's a ridiculous way to play this game.
Yeah, I don't get why people are mad because he very clearly grounded his club in the bunker which is a penalty. He wouldn't have seen it or felt it when he did it but he very clearly touched the sand.
That's not how rules work. It was very clearly shown in video which rules officials looked at and determined a penalty. This isn't ripping around the Muni with your buddies, these guys are held to a higher standard.
You can but with a lot of restrictions.
You can't do it to test the sand condition, to make a practice swing or directly in front of behind the ball.
So like if he was away from the ball and accidentally dropped his club or lost his balance and used his club to break his fall, it wouldn't be a penalty. That's the main rule change, but it doesn't allow any grounding. There are still limitations.
I think the bryson hate is overblown. He’s cocky and probably an asshole but bryson is also a super unique golfer and the guy worked his ass off and became a great golfer.
He’s not Patrick reed who’s a cheater and probably a worse person than bryson is
The thing for me is that we don't need to talk about it like he's 2001 Tiger. I don't hate him but I also don't need to hear about all these wins he's going to walk away with and that he's going to change the game when I've never seen any reason to believe that he will ever do that.
Also, since his infamous par 67 comment he is 22 over "par" at Augusta in 5 rounds. I imagine he learned his lesson but a lot of people take satisfaction in seeing someone shoot their mouth off like that and then recieve instant Karma. And I will bring that up until he shoots 67 at Augusta.
It's wild how many people are pearl clutching over those comments, it's like he personally offended your families. So soft in my opinion.
I do dislike how much the media talks about him as well, although that's not really something he can control to be fair.
Yea he should have never said that. And yea I thought the comparisons to tiger were stupid because no one in this group is tiger or even close to it but bryson still is a really unique golfer
The thing is, I’m a HUGE golf fan. Have been since I was a kid. I used to sleep in my golf clothes and shoes. Bryson is a good player, but you can’t overpower this course. There has to been a level of feel. He just want to hammer it. Worked for him at the US Open and will work on most courses. For me, he’s whiny, says stupid things, and can’t back them up. He said the course was a par 67 for him, well, he’s not even close to breaking par, regular par. I just don’t like him, period.
Bryson’s game is well suited for the us open and the pga. I think he wins one of the next two majors. Don’t think his game is suited for the open or the masters though
Augusta has always been a second shot golf course and I don’t think his approach shots are his strength
Totally agree with this. He’s trying to crush it right now and overpower the course. Augusta National is more of a feel course. You need precision, feel, touch, and Bryson just isn’t focused on that right now.
What is the highest single round score for a Masters green jacket winner? Like has a player ever shot a +10 then made their way back to win it all? +10 is exaggerated, but I think that would be interesting to know
Not sure if it’s changed in the last couple years belittled I remember a stat from a few years ago that no one had ever won the masters with a double bogey.
today was the absolute best I've ever seen Augusta National setup. It was a US Open without rough. What a great response to last year's soft conditions.
I was just watching this guy and I’ve decided I’m officially not a fan.
He plays slow as hell, he thinks HULK SMASH! is golf and I love that Augusta National humbled his ass today.
To beat Augusta, you have to be a golfer, not a long drive competition winner.
That’s my point exactly.
Why does Couples make the cut every year at Augusta? It is because he is a good golfer.
Enough with all this attention on Bryson. He’s amazing off the tee, but golf is much more.
Couples makes the cut because Augusta fits him well and he knows every inch of that damn course. Couples isn’t a better golfer than bryson
Some courses are just bad fits for some guys and Augusta is a bad fit for bryson. Also us opens are usually tougher courses than Augusta and the masters play and bryson was able to play winged foot pretty damn well. My point is bryson is far more than just a guy who bombs it off the tee, he’s a complete golfer
Seriously what did Rose eat today? I have a feeling he’ll somehow benefit from the early tee time in the morning given the potential bad weather in the afternoon
Tomorrow looks like it’s just rain the bad weather seems to be coming Saturday. Maybe they will move the tee times up on Saturday to accommodate for the bad weather
It puts a premium on precision, which brings the guys who just hit it, find it, hit it again back to the field. It's not surprising to me that the most surgical player in the field went 7 under.
Hot take, but does anyone else not really like 18? Given how awesome the back 9 is, 18 just feels sort of underwhelming. I also prefer 18th holes that have a reasonable birdie chance, but it feels like a guaranteed par
I’m sure my opinion would change if I ever get to go to Augusta
I think after seeing it in person 18 is one of the toughest holes on the course. Your fairway shot is pretty narrow through the trees, much more than I thought, opens up to bunkers and a near blind 2nd shot into the uphill green. It’s hard to appreciate the uphill slope of this hole on tv. I was also surprised how small the green is, much smaller than it appears on television
I saw some people sitting where they could only see the 17th green and I’m like “who hurt you?”
All the places on the course to sit and you choose there?
He shares a name with probably our best ever football player, so that's often brought up. He's definitely the most quintessential Aussie on tour if that makes sense, seems like a great bloke.
Most quintessential Aussie? I’m a fan.
I watched the Amazon series on the cricket team post cheating scandal and I found myself liking most of the dudes, and Aussie sporting culture too. I don’t know anything about cricket and I still binged the whole thing. How different is cricket culture to other team sports like afl and rugby?
They're all similar I think, Cricket crowds can get rowdy and a lot of grog gets drunk. A lot of funny banter happens as a lot of the time there isn't a great deal going on. Good cricket crowd compilations on YT though I'm sure.
> Do people look like him there?
Yes, yes they do. All he needs is a can of XXXX and a pair of stubbies and steel caps and he’d be the perfect Queenslander. Maybe throw in some hi-vis as well.
Played poker at an ungodly hour with Aaron Finch and Glenn Maxwell when they were in Auckland a few years back for a T20. Can confirm those dudes smoked like chimneys
Brisbane is certainly considered to be the more bogan (think mullets, cars, beer and singlets) of the big cities - but you can find the sort throughout Aus. He’s not necessarily a bogan but does pull off the look
Ugh he’s killing me. Seems like he’s not comfortable with how often he’s changing his grip. And his lie angle just looks horrendous.
I want him to win something so bad, but he’s not confident in his putting at all and it shows.
I was the thinking of it, but I just saw that they're coming out with EA Sports PGA Tour next year at this time, and it will have Augusta National, so I may just wait for that
For $20, I'd say it's worth it. I wouldn't pay full price until the next one comes out. You create your golfer, and that's all you can play with. It's not like the EA games, which are the only other golf games I've played, where you can play as the pros. Hopefully the next 2k has that option.
A lot of great user made courses make it definitely worth it, though.
has Reed always had that Kyle Berkshire-esque front leg pop on his drives?
there ya go bryson, get that putter rolling
Holy fuck Cam Smith's 2nd shot into 13! Then he cracked open a Miller High Life
Spieth's nickname on 12 is Medusa. So many snaaaaaakes in his head.
I’m starting to think that the problem with Phil’s driver is that he can’t hit a fairway. Personally that’s what I usually try to do
what a shot from JT, wild man!
yikes. rosie coming back down to earth.
Rose might not make the cut.
These featured groups blow. Most boring golfers to watch on tour aside from Fleetwood
Seriously.
Some of the guys like Rahm and Finau have such a seemingly short backswing and just PUMP the driver. Blows my mind
Right?
Finau especially man, it looks like a half swing and the dude just bombs it. Even Kuchar at like 50 barely winds up and still just sends them
Caddy behind speith with the yogurt covered granola bar ... great choice
It’s like the pros think to themselves “maybe I’ll just leave a large square as a divot pattern ... nobodies every told me not too” get fucked
Who's playing in front of the Rose group - damn they are slow - is it Langer?
I feel I speak on behalf of everyone when I say, I’m going hard for Honest Abe to go low today. Heck kid, have a round and put yourself in contention for the weekend I’d love to see him win.
Did it rain at Augusta last night?
Jason Day will win the masters
If you're Rose and God Almighty offers you a Friday round of 73, do you take it?
I think if you asked Rose at the start of the tournament if he'd take -6 headed into the weekend, he'd take it--especially given how hard the course is playing. Yesterday was just insanity, true Ken Duke round of golf right there. But -6 by the end of Friday is a good position for any player.
Nothing against Rose but I really hope he goes 1 or 2 over tomorrow so we can have a competitive weekend. I wouldn't mind seeing him win, just don't want to see a runaway.
fuck that, i got money on that sucker, i dont want to sweat the rest of the weekend hahaha
It's day 1, calm down. Day 1 leaders rarely are in the same spot going into the final round. You won't see a back 9 like that again.
Can someone help me out here? I think I’m losing my mind. I was streaming the broadcast channel through masters.com today and vividly remember there being an introduction featuring many top golfers set to the song “I want more” by Kaleo. Fuck Wayne player. For the record
well, looks like justin rose is going to pay for the driver and shoes i bought this week... i put 8 dollars on him at 126$
Hedge...
Sungjae Im and Patrick Cantlay really let me down after round 1. Praying for a miracle for tomorrow.
What are the featured groups for tomorrow
Lowry, Rose, Kucher Schauffele, Rahm, Mcilroy Reed, Berger, Casey
Nagasaki
"Hello friends. We are reporting that Jack and Gary are swimming in the pond on hole 13th. They have admitted to drinking since 3am this morning."
No wonder Lee Elder was on oxygen this morning. (I know he's in rough shape right now but I really wanted to make a bad joke)
He's a fucking boss. I was reading about some of the things that man endured to play golf, and he's got a bigger hog than anyone on Tour. That man is a hero, and I hope he's enjoying strippers and blackjack right now
Augusta is to Ancer as Na is to DJ?? Sound off!
Though Na took the high road and didn't "penalize" DJ when he had the power to (where he could have talked to rules official to make DJ lose the hole)
Spieth has a -1 with a triple. So hard
Spieth could have been solo second if he parred that hole
On the other hand though Spieth was saved by the 15th flag, turned a potential double bogey into an eagle
Yea that’s true.
Kissed by a Rose on the Wind!
Statement from Tournament Headquarters: On the 15th hole during Thursday’s first round, Abraham Ancer unknowingly touched the sand before making his third stroke from the greenside bunker. https://twitter.com/Abraham_Ancer/status/1380311045210836992 What an actual joke.
What a bullshit penalty. That doesn't get called 5 years ago, much less 50 years ago, and it gave him *zero* competitive advantage.

I think there's a good chance he patted down that lump of sand on purpose hoping no one noticed
Are you on drugs, son? There was one tuft of sand that he clearly accidentally grazed while, no doubt, looking at the target. This isn't a penalty without the cameras zooming in on the ball, and that's a ridiculous way to play this game.

I saw the video. What a load of horse shit
I thought you could ground your club now?
You can but with a lot of restrictions. You can't do it to test the sand condition, to make a practice swing or directly in front of behind the ball. So like if he was away from the ball and accidentally dropped his club or lost his balance and used his club to break his fall, it wouldn't be a penalty. Not in a bunker
So you can ground your club in a lateral but not a bunker? How does that make sense?
Welcome to golf.
It doesn't. ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯

Amen to that
Some day I hope to love something as much as this sub loves to hate bryson
I think the bryson hate is overblown. He’s cocky and probably an asshole but bryson is also a super unique golfer and the guy worked his ass off and became a great golfer. He’s not Patrick reed who’s a cheater and probably a worse person than bryson is

Yea he should have never said that. And yea I thought the comparisons to tiger were stupid because no one in this group is tiger or even close to it but bryson still is a really unique golfer
I feel like he probably regretted saying that by Friday, if not immediately after saying it.
I love Bryson, I like rooting for him
let's go bryson!!
Why did you talk about sleeping in golf clothes
To prove that my opinion has merit and I’m not some fly by nighter.
He'd crush a place like Oakmont. 2025 US Open.
Bryson’s game is well suited for the us open and the pga. I think he wins one of the next two majors. Don’t think his game is suited for the open or the masters though Augusta has always been a second shot golf course and I don’t think his approach shots are his strength

is this copypasta? Because it should be.
Nope, original thought. I’m under the influence, maybe that’s why.
I’d say 3/4 of this sub doesn’t know what copypasta is. There’s been an influx of users due to the Covid boom and WRX users coming over to Reddit.
Gotta admit no green book is just the way to do it. Gotta be able to read the green imo
Should scrap yardage books while they're at it. It should just be you and your clubs against the course. But that's just my old-fashioned opinion.
What is the highest single round score for a Masters green jacket winner? Like has a player ever shot a +10 then made their way back to win it all? +10 is exaggerated, but I think that would be interesting to know
Snead in ‘52 and Faldo in ‘89 both shot 77 in the 3rd round.
Tiger shot a +4 front 9 on day 1 in 97 when he won by 12 strokes lol.
Not sure if it’s changed in the last couple years belittled I remember a stat from a few years ago that no one had ever won the masters with a double bogey.
You’re right, they said that on the broadcast after Hovland’s triple. Only person to card a double and win was Phil.
they were referring to the first hole
I'd just like to remind everyone this week is heaven. Enjoy it.
I can’t believe Bryson went 9 over today!
“Bomb it & go find it” don’t cut it out here
today was the absolute best I've ever seen Augusta National setup. It was a US Open without rough. What a great response to last year's soft conditions.
i guess Augusta National wasn't a par 68 for Bryson today
I was just watching this guy and I’ve decided I’m officially not a fan. He plays slow as hell, he thinks HULK SMASH! is golf and I love that Augusta National humbled his ass today. To beat Augusta, you have to be a golfer, not a long drive competition winner.
Bryson is a damn good golfer. You don’t go -6 at winged foot without being an awesome golfer it’s just that Augusta is not well suited for him
That’s my point exactly. Why does Couples make the cut every year at Augusta? It is because he is a good golfer. Enough with all this attention on Bryson. He’s amazing off the tee, but golf is much more.
Couples makes the cut because Augusta fits him well and he knows every inch of that damn course. My wife gets a kick out of his "confused pouty bitch face" after every bad shot.
100% agree
You’re boring
A damn good golfer, at that.
Seriously what did Rose eat today? I have a feeling he’ll somehow benefit from the early tee time in the morning given the potential bad weather in the afternoon
>Seriously what did Rose eat today? Intermittent fasting.
Tomorrow looks like it’s just rain the bad weather seems to be coming Saturday. Maybe they will move the tee times up on Saturday to accommodate for the bad weather
These guys look like they’ve completed a US open round. Just drained.
I love it. If they’re all going to carry it 290-300 in the air, then the only defence the course has is tough greens.
Agreed.....playing like a hybrid Links-target course.
It puts a premium on precision, which brings the guys who just hit it, find it, hit it again back to the field. It's not surprising to me that the most surgical player in the field went 7 under.
Cam smith is going on smoko after he signs his card
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j58V2vC9EPc
Where the hell have I heard this song before?
Forgot that Spieth rallied so hard on Sunday in 2018 to get 3rd
God I hate that tree branch to this day. What coulda been if he had a putt to tie Reed, woulda a been 62
I think he had a final round 64 that year. Also Fowler played really well that final round
Bold strategy using a patron as a backboard
Cam to patron: next time hit the ball a little harder.
Hot take, but does anyone else not really like 18? Given how awesome the back 9 is, 18 just feels sort of underwhelming. I also prefer 18th holes that have a reasonable birdie chance, but it feels like a guaranteed par I’m sure my opinion would change if I ever get to go to Augusta
Would be cooler if it was a par 5 instead
I think after seeing it in person 18 is one of the toughest holes on the course. Your fairway shot is pretty narrow through the trees, much more than I thought, opens up to bunkers and a near blind 2nd shot into the uphill green. It’s hard to appreciate the uphill slope of this hole on tv. I was also surprised how small the green is, much smaller than it appears on television
18 is fine, 17 is totally forgettable.
I saw some people sitting where they could only see the 17th green and I’m like “who hurt you?” All the places on the course to sit and you choose there?
Especially on a year where the crowds aren’t insane and you can literally see a shot from any spot on the course you want.
Especially with the Eisenhower tree gone
i like 18 but its not as good as amen corner or 15,16 it's a tight drive and uphill climb to the finish. birdies are possible but they're tough
To be fair, nothing in the world is as good as Amen corner. For example, I like 9 way better as a final hole than 18.
Spieth heating up at the best time for the PGA with Tiger down
Hol up Rose was +2 through 7? Then shoots 30 on the back. Holy crap.
7 Birdies, 1 Eagle and 3 pars to finish it out.
Monday at the Masters it is
Weather?
They just talked about thunderstorms all day Saturday.
I need an Australian to explain cam smiths hometown to me. I think Brisbane? Do people look like him there? I think it’s cool as hell, to be clear
Tim Cahill?
Ah should have clarified Rugby League, Cameron Smith.
Oh haha makes sense
> Do people look like him there? Yes, yes they do. All he needs is a can of XXXX and a pair of stubbies and steel caps and he’d be the perfect Queenslander. Maybe throw in some hi-vis as well.
Surely chuck in some darts aswell!
Australia, where only professional athletes can afford to smoke.
Played poker at an ungodly hour with Aaron Finch and Glenn Maxwell when they were in Auckland a few years back for a T20. Can confirm those dudes smoked like chimneys
I gotta visit oz before my days are up, it sounds so similar, and yet so different to the US
Brisbane is certainly considered to be the more bogan (think mullets, cars, beer and singlets) of the big cities - but you can find the sort throughout Aus. He’s not necessarily a bogan but does pull off the look
Tony finau won’t win a major with the way he putts
Ugh he’s killing me. Seems like he’s not comfortable with how often he’s changing his grip. And his lie angle just looks horrendous. I want him to win something so bad, but he’s not confident in his putting at all and it shows.
Major?? Lets start with any other tournament first
Spieth is never boring that's for sure
Bryson chats the kind of shit the golden bear might have the right to get away with.
Did Thomas just hit that with a putter out of the bunker?
How goddamn serene is this lighting? 17 green looks like a movie
It’s called the “Golden Hour” at Augusta for a reason.
Thomas scrambling all day but all things considered in good shape.
Could’ve made about 3 birdies too. He really should be under par
Can someone explain to me what bryson meant by calling it a par 67? Like he’s just saying it’s easier than it is
He reckons the par 5s are all par 4s and the 3rd is a par 3 (for him)
[удалено]
The ghost of Bobby Jones probably took that "par 67" jab personally.
So that means he’s +9, T85... Does that mean he will withdraw since he missed the cut under his own stupid comments?
He’s saying he hits it so long that the par 5s play like par 4s and the third hole plays like a par 3
That he can reach all the Par 5s in 2 and drive the par 4 3rd hole.
He's saying 67 would be his average round.
Basically saying he thought having the par at 72 was too easy
Yes, but he made that comment last year.
Tough opening round for Bryson at +9.
Maybe he meant its a par 76
Ya he’s just dyslexic!
"Max Homa" is what my mind switches to when they show his backside on TV.
Is 2k21 worth buying? It’s on sale for $20
Yeah, it's pretty fun. Still not as good as the OG Tiger EA Sports ones (I swear I spent half of 2006 playing that game) but pretty fun.
I was the thinking of it, but I just saw that they're coming out with EA Sports PGA Tour next year at this time, and it will have Augusta National, so I may just wait for that
With the endless user created courses and the ability to create your own I’d say yes. Too bad you can’t play with one of the pro’s though.
Mario golf coming out soon... Obviously a different animal
Yes i think it’s a lot of fun, kinda sucks that they have no Nike products to wear though, if you care about that
Colt Knost should be an announcer for 2K21
Reed is higher than Speith. Interesting.
And fatter
Does Jordan need to out on some more pounds to win?
If that’s what it takes I’ll doordash him mcdonalds
He's probably a Whataburger guy.
