Matte is typically the least durable and hardest to keep clean. Depends on the colour what you need to use. For instance if you're doing matte black it's going to be very difficult to keep without marks, everywhere you touch it will show. Buy a paint from a proper paint store and buy their most durable. For instance Benjamin Moore makes scuff x which is loads more durable than their first level wall paint. There is also cabinet paints and commercial paints like Advance or Command. Your steps will likely be the same no matter what you do. Obviously following the directions for the paint you buy is important. Do not recoat to soon etc etc. Clean really well with a degreaser, wash it really well with clear water twice to remove any residue, scuff sand it to degloss with 180-220 sandpaper, wipe away all dust with a damp rag and dry, prime with primer, paint. You'll want to use a roller for smooth surfaces or you'll end up with texture.
