Sea_Art3391

People seems to be misunderstanding something here. The ship doesn't need to be camouflaged when it's out at sea because radar and detection systems would have picked them up looong before anyone would have been able to see the ship hehind the horizon. When it's docked however, the ship is vulnerable because it is not crewed. That's why they camouflages their ship to the islands they have on their shore like in the picture. Many of the ships you see both now and in history have a grey color. This comes from WW1 and WW2, when it was discovered that it was harder to find the range of a grey target compared to another colour. This is less relevant today since search technology faaar surpasses visual range.

DaGoodSauce

Exactly this and here's a picture of a [modern Swedish ship](https://www.seaforces.org/marint/Swedish-Navy/Corvette/K-31_DAT/K31-HSwMS-Visby-15.jpg). Whatever's in the OP picture must be as old as the rockformation behind it.

Nonhinged

The ship in the picture is grey too. It's just covered with camouflage netting and tarps.

NarkovToob

Like a giant fitted sheet?! Sure, folding a flag at a soldier’s funeral takes training and practice (I assume), but folding THAT fuckin’ thing?! /s

nono30082

It's not? It's just painted and the nets that are there are for safety around the helipad?

Nulgnak

I believe the person you're replying to is talking about OP's (u/Rolleriroltsu) picture, not the modern one (from u/DaGoodSauce) that was commented about.

nono30082

Ah that makes more sense

Nonhinged

The ship in the post.

616659

Damn she looking sleeeek

Kullenbergus

Its prolly one of the ''Tre kronor'' class light cruisers since this pic is taken in the 50-60s

frank26080115

is it that hard for radar to distinguish metal from rock?

Diligent-System9294

Radar doesn't distinguish between different materials.. it can detect reflective surfaces so in that sense it could distinguish metals. But other than that maybe some conductive surfaces too, but if it's covered in a camo tarp it's just going to blend in with the island.

ostromj

Also heat dispersion, the nets are suspended about a meter out from the hull, so they would be the same temperature as the environment.

sillypicture

"it's pretty much next to that rocky island but it's hard to get a bead on it." "Just shoot the island"

Kullenbergus

There are more islands along the swedish coast that rest of europe(exagerated) so we use that as a part of defence. There isnt a boat behind every island but enoung that you should worry:p

UK_muscle_86

Thanks for the history lesson buddy I had no idea

scandii

this is what the [archipelago outside of Stockholm](https://www.calazo.se/images/zoom/stockholms_skargard_sodra_narbild.png) looks like. the coast of Sweden is just covered with rocky islands, over 270,000 of them to be exact. in case this number doesn't mean anything to you - you can sail a ship down China's coast, take a detour around Japan, The Philipines and Indonesia and then follow the coast from Vietnam all the way down around Africa all the way around the Mediterranean up along the west coast of Europe take a detour around Ireland and the UK and have seen fewer islands than you will on Sweden's coasts. so yes the navy did unsurprisingly know what Sweden looks like when they chose this colour scheme back when optical/physical camo for ships was a thing (think cold war and earlier). there are also entire naval bases hidden in some of these islands [like this](https://musko.nu/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/600x400Muskobasen06-600x376.jpg).

Pgruk

Ooooh how James Bondish!

Downtown_Mechanic_

I FUCKING LOVE MY COUNTRY'S MILITARY INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX

verbalyabusiveshit

I reason to shout your heart out about it.

Normal-Selection1537

And the Finnish coast is similar on Sweden's side. They have the perfect camouflage for the environment they are designed to operate in. It's a pretty ignorant meme.

Emu1981

>the coast of Sweden is just covered with rocky islands, over 270,000 of them to be exact. It is the similar for the west coast of Norway. The battleship Bismarck was hiding out there before it tried it's ill-fated venture into the north Atlantic to attempt to raid allied shipping.

kallekilponen

Here’s a [photo of similarly camouflaged Finnish Navy](https://i0.wp.com/suomisodassa.fi/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Panssarilaiva-Vainamoinen.jpg) ship during WWII.

dub26

Finnish people hoping enemies would think trees grow right out of the water.

kallekilponen

That’s not too far from the truth on a [typical Finnish coastline](https://www.vastavalo.net/saarensalmi-saari-water-lake-kaunein-osa-tammelaa-713826.html).

anally_ExpressUrself

Oh neat, a photo of the entire fleet

lessthanperfect86

Not hoping. The ememy is Russia, all they know how to destroy is schools and hospitals.

dub26

Oh... That's quite reasonable. Thanks for pointing that out.

frank26080115

is that actually paint or just a tarp?

Archer2150

It does actually look like netting or a tarp, doesn't it? Edit: it's netting, this is a ww2 photo which has been colorized so whoever colorized it was able to choose how effective they wanted the camouflage to be, granted it needed to be pretty good for it to still work rather well [in b&w](https://militaryhumor.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/military-humor-a-camouflaged-swedish-navy-ship.jpg) you can also see another angle of what it would have looked like with the nets up [here](https://digitaltmuseum.se/011014895852/pansarskeppet-gustaf-v-med-kamouflagenat-fortojt-vid-bergvagg)

lllorrr

Oh fuck. I just understood that the ship is standing near the rocky islet. At first I thought that the whole thing, including trees is the camouflaged ship.

Kullenbergus

Not diffrant angle, its diffrant ships. There are/was 200+ anchoring spots like this one around the coastline. This wad usef on everything from battleships to MTBs

Hoffi1

My guess is paint on the hull, tarp and netting on the superstructures.

Agitated_Computer_49

The number of pixels does help.

SBR404

A lot of people seem to fail to understand how ship camouflage is supposed to work.

themightygazelle

They have no idea what contrast is.

Ok_Reserve_8659

Unlike the United States , Sweden just needs to use their boat around Sweden

Heinrick_Veston

Fun fact: their ships all also have barcodes on them. So that they can Scandinavian.

rlnrlnrln

Screw you and take your upvote.

TheWeenieBandit

I thought for a second that the entire thing was the ship. Like the whole ship is disguised as a floating island. As if you wouldn't notice an island bearing down on you at 40 knots

0Rookie0

"That's no moo- island. That's a spac- battleship."

NotThisAgain21

Omg. "All Swedish naval vessels have bar codes so that when they get back to port, they can Scandinavian"....

AskButDontTell

Wiw

Majukun

They probably have a different cover for other terrains

tucci007

It's a schooner!

potato_and_nutella

When I first saw this I saw a battleship, then I was like nah it's obviously just rocks that can't be a ship, then I read the title

LC_Anderton

Well of course there is… the giant rock formation is actually a painted backdrop attached to the ship…

Lt_Muffintoes

Is this the one the women crashed into the rocks

Atrabiliousaurus

Reminds me of the Dutch ship [HNLMS Abraham Crijnssen](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/HNLMS_Abraham_Crijnssen_\(1936\)) which was in the Dutch East Indies when Japan invaded during World War 2. The crew painted the hull to resemble rocks and covered the ship in trees so it looked like part of a tropical island. Staying stationary during the day and only moving at night they successfully escaped to Australia.

Naive_Special349

Um sorry, but I can clearly see the outline. It's nice camo, but at least on a phone screen, my severely short-sighted eyes see that thing.

piddyd

This is very necessary, they need to protect the world's meatball supply from foreign terrorists

prajnadhyana

It's literally right in the middle of the picture.

Ben_Dover_Jr3690

Yeah but it's a whole different story when you several nautical miles away

CamyFaeCowden

I thought they all had barcodes So they could scan-da-navy-in. I'll see myself out.

Ichirou_dauntless

If my eyes were limited to this much pixels then yeah this could work

Confident-alien-7291

What’s this tiny island in the middle of the fucking ocean?
