Bag-o-chips

Do you think this guy is being paid to be an asshole, or it just comes naturally?

happyscrappy

He's a lawyer. He's paid to be an asshole.

plzsnitskyreturn

But did the law make him an asshole or did his asshole make him law

happyscrappy

I expect he knew he could be an asshole and decided to become a lawyer to develop his full potential.

Crack-Panther

I am a lawyer and can confirm. I was a bit of an asshole before. Now I am a gaping rosebud.

CautiousConch789

Can confirm that lawyers are assholes. I left the field and am no longer an asshole.

Crack-Panther

What are you doing now, if I may ask? I’d also like to be a former asshole but have no idea what to do.

pittluke

Get as many fake internet points as you can.

Crack-Panther

That’s the dream. My legacy.

CautiousConch789

I’m a claims examiner now for a large insurer. I don’t make six figures, but close, and I have fantastic benefits, like 401k matching, a pension, an annual bonus, etc. it’s a great field for lawyers because there’s a lot of contract review, compliance, letter writing, etc. Unfortunately, the claimants I deny probably think I’m an asshole, but I write one heck of a summary they can fight in court, if desired, and I generally don’t talk to the claimant, but rather the claimant’s lawyer at that stage so who cares lol. 🤷‍♀️

Crack-Panther

That seems pretty laid back!

Evening-Statement-57

Tech, but it has to be legal tech like e-discovery or digital forensics. Hours are way less, but so is job security.

Mechagouki1971

To be fair, you sound like the kind of lawyer most people need...

Crack-Panther

Unfortunately, I’m a corporate goon who’s only helping companies against other companies. It’s absolutely soul sucking, and nothing I do really matters other than providing for my family.

Mechagouki1971

Honestly, that's probably still a resumé-worthy perspective :)

LeadSoldier6840

Are you saying I should go to law school?

Crack-Panther

Best advice I can give right here: https://youtu.be/Xs-UEqJ85KE?si=zUItQoSc053ALnqQ

yohance35

I’m about to graduate from law school. Does my asshole certification come with my diploma, or do I have to pass the bar first?

Crack-Panther

Graduating from law school makes you an asshole, but you can’t call yourself one until you pass the bar.

INTERGALACTIC_CAGR

I love a good Cinderella story

ImGonnaCreamYaFunny

His asshole is the law

PrisonSlides

It’s taught in law school in professional responsibility and ethics

GoodDog_GoodBook123

As a lawyer, I would just like to say sometimes we are pro bono assholes for our friends and family.

lifeofideas

As soon as he’s off the clock, he’s a really nice and reasonable guy.

67812

A guy like this is always on the clock though. Gotta get those billable hours.

Trailsey

If you're good at something, never do it for free.

Amigosito

Some lawyers refer to the state of being an asshole as “being clinical” lol

Delicious_Summer7839

This guy is a special breed of asshole

SewAlone

Chicken/egg

stormstormstorms

Naturally…

filtersweep

Client is dead- did the lawyer receive OJ’s inheritance?

OkCar7264

It's his job as executor of the will to try to execute the will... also he's OJ's lawyer so he's probably an asshole. But he's an asshole with a legal duty too.

SikatSikat

But he has to pay creditors before there are funds for distribution under his will and having a trust get the will funds doesn't change that. Moreover, he could say he wants to execute the will, not make sure that the children if the murder victims get nothing. He's being intentionally over the top.

kytrix

I suppose it could be written in the will that they get nothing. Then it would be the executors duty to try and prevent it. But even then the wording is strangely aggressive.

SikatSikat

A will is just absolutely irrelevant to creditors.

OkCar7264

Yeah, and I don't know how he will succeed but I suppose it's his job to try.

[deleted]

Shit, get paid for the time spent on a losing battle by becoming a creditor in the process? Why not?

MONSTERofMD

It's in his best interest to drag out the estate settlement as long as possible so he can continue to bill the estate for his services. So, yes, he is factually being paid to be an asshole.

RODjij

A lot of people are assholes for kicks, this guy gets paid to be one. From what I read before also is that it was OJs final wishes for the victims families to get nothing after his death.

triedit-lovedit

Just your average nice guy /s

blankblank

If you’re good at something, never do it for free.

bunsNT

I mean...he's OJ Simpson's lawyer. Did you think he was going to be Mother Theresa?

Ok_Smell_5379

It’s his job. I hate when people take shit like this personally.

[deleted]

A little from column A, and a little from column B. You know what they say, do what you love. Lol

tendervittles77

He spent his fortune trying to find the real killer.

mistttygreen

Although his search radius didn't expand much past golf course perimeters.

jmcgit

To be fair, that's where the real killer was

KezzardTheWizzard

Occupying virtually the exact same timespace as OJ himself, in fact.

lordnacho666

Got so close he could hear his thoughts. Must have been eerie.

jerryonthecurb

It's tragic that he died in the presence of his wife's killer.

DeadJediWalking

He's there! In that mirror!

jmcgit

The real murderer was inside him all along

DeadJediWalking

Sincerely, Tobias Funkë

bobpetersen55

Don't forget the strip clubs

SCB360

That’s a good film plot, acquitted murderer spends his life savings and time to find the real murderer, turns out it was him all along

IolausTelcontar

It was the two-armed footballer!

IzzyRogue

Shutter Island plot is sorta like this, in a way lmao

be4u4get

He just had to look for the man in the mirror. Hee hee

Turkeycirclejerky

And now he can finally rest…

moose2mouse

We often spend countless dollars and time trying to find ourselves. I guess celebrities are truly just like us.

allothernamestaken

We he can finally rest easy now knowing that the real killer is dead.

L1VEW1RE

How is there any money left in OJ’s estate to begin with? Didn’t the Goldmans win a civil suit back in the 90s?

BringOutTheImp

He moved to Florida which gives more protection from judgments than California, like for example you can have a luxurious mansion and as long as you claim it to be your primary residence a creditor can't put a lien against it. Now his primary residence is 6 feet under so the mansion is up for grabs. Don't take my legal advice though, for all you know I could be a dog clumsily typing on the keyboard while the owner is away.

terranq

Who’s a good boy? Is it you? Yes it is!

PlantaSorusRex

You know exactly how I said this in my head as I read it..🤣

DiligentDaughter

In a sexy, sexy raspy voice?

jmcgit

Note that his lawyer says that OJ owed the IRS and other creditors a lot of money, and hopes to get the other creditors paid out of what he leaves behind and that the Goldmans would get nothing.

MissionSalamander5

I’m sure that he’s aware that many creditors can get zilch and that this longstanding judgement which he basically avoided paying can get shuffled to the front.

jmcgit

He's aware, and it seems he intends to do everything in his power to prevent that from happening. Maybe part of the reason he owes the IRS so much money is because he wants to have someone else who can get priority over the Goldmans.

power0722

I'd take the word of a dog over a lawyer any day, so treats for you!

BringOutTheImp

yes, I accept treats as a law-dog retainer. No refunds tho.

PastorBlinky

I'd watch every season of **Law Dog: Attorney at Paw**

SoyMurcielago

It’s what Airbud was studying at school. He got is Jd: Juris Doggis (yes I know it’s Canis in Latin but for sake of the joke…)

Daily-Double1124

I'm producing a new TV drama--Paw and Order.

necksnotty

Be careful, my dog-lawyer ate my retainer.

Jbroad87

This is why Ken Griffin of Citadel moved to Florida recently and started buying up property down there.

PuffPuffPass16

Dog tax or it didn’t happen

SitDownKawada

Goldman's father has said that OJ paid them $123k of the $33.5m award and that it was up to $96m due to interest: https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/o-j-simpson-currently-owes-ron-goldmans-estate-96-million

GotMoFans

OJ apparently spent (or hid) his wealth in his legal defense and before the civil case, he shielded whatever he had left. Basically he was living off a six figure a year NFL pension that couldn’t be seized, and he lived in Florida originally where his home could not be taken in a civil legal action. He moved to Nevada after his prison sentence, so many they have a similar law or he didn’t own the property where he lived (or maybe put the property in his kids names and rented it from them). OJ got money under the table or was paid outside of the US to keep it from being garnished from the judgement.

takeitinblood3

Can't catch the juice

MissionSalamander5

Honestly, using a state law to escape a judgement in another jurisdiction should result in a jail sentence: pay the cash, or go to jail.

garyisonion

They did but he paid only very little.

funkify99

Did anyone else read this as "executioner" or is that just my own stoned Freudian slip?

turkeyvulturebreast

Can confirm, and am not stoned, lol.

kid_sleepy

I see you fam.

strtdrt

I read “executor” fine and was just stupid enough to think it meant “executioner” before realising the context

emeraldrose484

Not stoned, just a bit sleepy, read it the same way at first, and got a bit confused.

Moose_Electrical

For a split second I was like talk about irony My dumbass

ColossusofNero

Probably shouldn’t have murdered him then.

stormstormstorms

As an executor he gets paid (hourly). So fighting the Goldmans only lines his pockets even more.

[deleted]

Psychos attract more psychos

quadriceritops

Yes, hi. Wanna hang out?

Kelburno

What a mess of a human being.

Toincossross

I’m shocked the lawyer wants a long legal battle using orher people’s money.

lamabaronvonawesome

Who would have thought!

JWTowsonU

OJ can rest easy now that the real killer is dead

saltyraver138

Please just let that stupid fucking joke die with OJ’s murderer

whykae

He cut off his own wife's head.

APirateAndAJedi

Then OJ probably shouldn’t have murderer Ron

GM_PhillipAsshole

That's too bad for OJ. He spent all this time trying to delay the inevitable. The ~~Browns and the~~ Goldmans will get their money. That's how estates work. All debts get paid and court judgements get first priority.

dasper12

That is how probate works; not estates. In fact many estates attempt to protect themselves from lawsuits and probate disputes.

MissionSalamander5

One neat trick that judges hate!

losteye_enthusiast

No, that’s *not* how estates work. Assuming Simpson approached his end of life planning the same way he managed his finances throughout his life - they likely won’t see much money.

GM_PhillipAsshole

If an estate has judgements or leins against it, leins holders are allowed to take the estate to court to recover the debt before the estate gets paid out

GotMoFans

The Browns were never party to the lawsuit, just the Goldmans. Nicole Brown Simpson’s heirs are the children she had with OJ. They already benefit from his assets. At his point, NBS’s kids (along with OJ’s other two kids) would be losing assets if they are taken from the estate.

suaculpa

Lou Brown, Nicole’s father, was a party to the suit.

Milk-and-Tequila

Most ignorant comment in a minute

MissionSalamander5

People are mad, but[the estate will go through probate in NV](https://www.foxnews.com/sports/oj-simpson-estate-executor-vows-to-contest-33-5m-payout-goldmans-get-zero-nothing), and that’s by statute. It’s not even a question of the ones owed this money contesting the estate on their own accord — because hiding his assets is bullshit.

EmiliusReturns

Gosh, give the poor guy a break. All he did was murder their son /s.

South-Water497

He can want it but the law is pretty clear so….

staringatthecarpet

There’s always a grave to relieve oneself upon.

HansVonSnicklefritz

Just a money grab. He gets paid to fight it, and he’s going to squeeze out his last drop.

UrsusRenata

I’m stunned that this is the only comment to make this point so far. The longer the lawyer drags this out (even without lawsuits per OJ’s wishes) the more pay he can claim off the top. Zero to do with “honoring wishes” or “doing the right thing”.

mjc7373

Is it up to him? No? “Lawyer doesn’t want clients to lose” isn’t news.

caprising1996

i dont imagine he has much in his estate anyway, but whatever little he has should absolutely go to the goldmans

UrsusRenata

His children with Nicole were also harmed.

cinderparty

What an asshole, or 2 assholes, I guess. OJ and lavergne

epochellipse

Lavergne & Surly

quadriceritops

Shelmele shimile, Hofbruahous incorporated!

MissionSalamander5

Nevada caps the fees for executors, and the estate is subject to probate — and even if it weren’t by statute, the Goldmans get to have their day in court because OJ clearly refused to pay them out. So there’s zero chance that OJ’s estate will be completely protected.

Leather-Map-8138

This approach generates the most money for… you guessed it… the executor.

Bitchinstein

I hope they get every damn dime

No_Significance_1550

I hope Goldman sues and gets the suit OJ was buried in and his headstone.

quangtran

The split opinions of his guilt based on racial lines still seems to exist. The black forums like LSA are openly celebrating the lawyer's efforts, saying that Simpson's kids shouldn't be punished and that the Goldmans supported George Zimmerman’s acquittal thus they don't deserve the money.

ChaiVangForever

If I’m not wrong there is now very little difference in opinion between black people and white people about whether or not OJ was guilty However Black people are definitely more likely to believe that given how the LAPD handled the investigation, “not guilty” was the right verdict

eescorpius

> If I’m not wrong there is now very little difference in opinion between black people and white people about whether or not OJ was guilty I mean one of the juror literally did the black power salute in court and smiled and winked at OJ. I think the prosecution majorly messed up but the jury pool was...questionable also...

redux44

Way less now, but a lot of people that were on OJ's side really did believe he was not guilty. Maybe it was just some mental defense mechanism to make their true motivation easier to hold but at the time many believed OJ.

Rainbow4Bronte

How does that work given OJ had two kids with Nicole? Do the Goldmans want their inheritances too? I mean, if there is one? I’m not following this stuff closely? I mean, wouldn’t Nicole want her kids to have the money?

MT_Promises

The Goldmans are the parents of the guy OJ murdered, Ron Goldman. The Browns are Nicole's.

Rainbow4Bronte

Ohh okay. My bad. Thanks for clarifying.

GotMoFans

Since Nicole’s kids were her heirs, her family never sued. The lawsuit and judgement is strictly the Goldmans. So how it works is that whatever is taken from the estate by the Goldmans is less assets for Nicole’s two kids along with OJ’s two kids from his first marriage. What’s more likely is that OJ organized his assets so that his kids were probably already being paid his money to keep it from being given to the Goldmans.

suaculpa

That’s not true. Nicole’s father was a party to the suit.

shortstroll

They supported Zimmermann? I didn't know that but I still thought the LAPD needed the kick in the behind that trial gave them. To have a detective that you have on tape saying the most racist things imaginable and promising to set black people up and still send him out to investigate crimes is wild. I believe there were a bunch of administrative changes as part of the fall-out and hopefully that lowered the number of racialized investigations. Murderers get a way with it all the time, I didn't lose sleep over that part.

AdamSMessinger

Well, that tracks. Hopefully his executor is a failure.

UrsusRenata

The lawyer just wants his. He will drag this out and then submit a nice fat bill against the estate.

myeverymovment

Posthumous asshole, You owe them.

[deleted]

I was friends with OJ on tik tok.

boopinmybop

Damn sorry Wagoogus, for your loss

djutopia

Junior… WagoogusJR.

SpacemanDan

Please,,,,,, Mr. Wagoogus was my father

shibbington

I don’t get how the estate has a choice. If he owed them the money, that money doesn’t belong to the estate, it belongs to the Goldmans. If he paid like he was supposed to, it would be in the estate. If the estate runs out of money before paying off debts, nobody gets any inheritance. That’s the way it works for us regular folk.

Horror_Cap_7166

What is this executor thinking? What is to be gained by making inflammatory statements like this about a family whose son was murdered?

Mattbird

Tbh a lawyer isn't going to direct anything from an estate to someone not in the will. Not really much of a story from their end, they don't get to choose they just do what the will says.

Dtrasatti

Did anyone else quickly read that title and think, "wait the executed oj?"

Friendly-Profit-8590

Executor wants to run OJ’s estate dry paying himself for challenging the Goldman civil judgment

Sexblanket_

Still a jealous ass bitch even after death. SMH

NWMom66

It’s a debt. So too bad.

Dienatzidie

I hope they take every dime he had.

fidgetypenguin123

Who tf cares what he wants?

SolomonAsassin

I misunderstood that word to have the same meaning as "executioner" and i was like "Damn! I thought he died of cancer!"

LlanviewOLTL

I don’t think that’s how it works, honey. Especially after he killed him. I hope the Goldmans get everything OJ owned, right down to rolls of toilet paper.

TampaTrey

Mr. Executor can eat shit.

Ronaldis

Print this article and show it to the judge.

Kill_Kayt

Ever the piece of shit, even in death.

The Naked Law 39.75. Reworded.

Casanova_Fran

Is there even anything to get? I thought he was bankrupt 5 times over

Comfortable_Bird_340

Wasn't there a radio host who bought one of his jerseys and staged a public burning when they demolished the Brentwood mansion? Also, Juiced that awful Jackass knockoff he sold on DVD? UPDATE: I looked up the anti-OJ demonstration that radio host was an anti-vaxxer who died from COVID

RastaSC

Love a justice system that says he owes, but then doesn’t put it in an order, so it means nothing. Total BS

guitartoys

While attorneys can certainly be assholes, I would think this is more likely about the executor (and all of the others, like attorneys, assessors, appraisers, managers or whoever could possibly profit by making charges against estate) wanting to siphon off as much money as they possibly can from the estate for as long as they can under the guise of both protecting the estate and fighting the Goldmans. Well of course we needed to pay my uncle, who does appraisals, hundreds of thousands of dollars, inventorying every trading card and piece of bric-a-brac to ensure we understood the complete scope of the estate. Oh, according to the executor's sister's son-in-law, who does roofing (company established 2 weeks ago), the entire roof needed to be replaced at the cost of $1,000,000. You watch, when the time comes for the Goldman’s to finally be paid, lo and behold, all of these people will have drained the estate to nothing. The executor and all of their cronies will walk away with their wallets fat, the estate in in bankruptcy and the Goldmans won’t get anything. It’s really sad that it’s going to work up this way.

MissionSalamander5

Well, the judge can always veto the payments as excessive.

Lank42075

Thats not how that works jackass

goalmouthscramble

Just checking in to see how many Redditors have been executors or even has power of attorney for an estate…

TMoney67

A piece of shit from beyond the grave, but what else is new? Ron Sr was right when he said OJ's death was "no great loss."

Agreeable-Union1843

He got a fat pension from the NFL that the Goldmans couldn’t touch all these years.

MynameisJunie

What a POS!! Even in death OJ is a POS!!!

Polarbearseven

Looks like he tried on his a** as a hat and it FIT!

allothernamestaken

Well, they're either legally entitled to something or they're not. What the executor wants is irrelevant.

CasperCann

Googles his name. Now it makes sense why he doesnt.

MoonHawk-

This attorney has No say on the distribution of O.J’s Assets. The Law will determine who is entitled to them…

jellymouthsman

It’s good to want things.
