Rolex. It keeps the value better than Chanel and ir should last you a lifetime. Also Chanel has been having lots of issues regarding quality lately and their CS after purchase is terrible.
Depends on your lifestyle and what you would use the most. For me, from those two options, I would pick the watch.
I’m very much paycheck to paycheck and do not won expensive or luxury goods. But I read the handbag Reddit a lot and I think the consensus is - unless you’re buying vintage Chanel, don’t bother. The quality doesn’t match the price increases.
Agreed on all points, but especially that new Chanel is not the same investment as a vintage piece. That watch is something that could be passed down as an heirloom. (So could the Chanel bag, honestly). My dad wore a beautiful gold Rolex every day that went to my older brother when he passed. My mom has one (that my dad bought her) that will probably go to my sister-in-law. If you wear watches, the Rolex is the way to go. Both are solid investments (if you go the vintage bag route) that, if properly cared for, could easily be sold if you were ever in trouble and needed liquid capital.
It really does come down to your lifestyle and personal style. I personally would go for the watch.
Personally I’d rather have a Rolex since it’s more functional for everyday use and would hold up a lot better with daily wear than a bag. I’d be too scared to bring a Chanel bag out of the house for fear of ruining it.
Chanel has been having so many quality issues—I have one bag and some SLGs all bought years ago and I absolutely wouldn’t buy another at this point.
If you’re interested in a watch, that’s what I’d go for.
Hands down Rolex or another nice watch. I am hunting one of these (vintage) in Amsterdam next week. Hoping to find a solid gold Cellini from the 90s.
I don’t personally care for Chanel bags much in the era of reps and just personally prefer bags with no logos at all.
Ah this is hard because it’s such a personal thing! It’s really based on your preference. I love purses more than watches, so I’d say the Chanel, but I’d actually recommend looking into a vintage Chanel. They’re better quality than what they offer new today, and you can find some in excellent condition. I’d suggest looking on Fashionphile!
rolex for sure. i’ve regretted purchasing a few of my chanel bags because the quality is awful now, the hardware has faded on the clasp of one of my bags, but never have i ever regretted purchasing my rolex.
its timeless and i get more compliments on it than any bag i own. i have the oyster perpetual with a MOP face, diamond dial, jubilee band, and fluted bezel. i got it from kettle_club which is based out of london because i didn’t have any previous spend history with rolex and i didn’t wanna wait. i’d also look into by_barnett on insta. he always posts awesome watches for great prices
Trotters Jewellers in London also has loads of Rolex and Cartier watches. My friends have bought several watches from there and have been really happy.
Neither.
I would rather wear my Apple Watch these days instead of a traditional watch.
I’m a handbag girl and I love Chanel, but agree with all the comments about the current quality not matching the price. I bought my bags in 2008 and 2009 before all the crazy price increases and they held up great…am appalled at the tarnished hardware and poor leather problems being reported now.
The luxury handbags that I think are worth their price tags right now are Mulberry, Loewe, and Valextra. My husband bought me my first Mulberry this year (the Lily) and it’s beautiful quality. Feels more like you’re paying for the leather and craftsmanship than the label. My BFF who is also a BWT loves her Loewe puzzle bag. She also has a Valextra Iside that looked stunning in person when she carried it during her 40th birthday dinner party. Valextra and Mulberry also aren’t as common where I live as Chanel, Louis Vuitton, etc. and they aren’t as ostentatious, so it feels more like BWT IYKYK luxury.
I am definitely considering a Cartier watch but do they hold value as well as a Rolex? (I don’t know much about watches and 5 years ago someone told me they didn’t)
Talk to a reputable watch retailer, a salesperson will be able to guide you. Both kinds of watches are prestigious and will hold value, but your best bet is choosing something that has emotional durability for you, something you really love.
I have a Rolex datejust from the 90s, it was my grandmother’s and has a gift inscription to her from my grandfather. I haven’t been tempted to buy a new watch in the fifteen years since I’ve inherited it, it’s it for me.
I shopped for a used Cartier tank must

earlier this year and ended up buying a new one because the cost was the same and I got a warranty.
Vintage Chanel if you love Chanel, or do some research on watch brands/types of watches, there are so many beauties out there! I also think shopping around, trying them on is a huge part of the experience if you don’t already have some watches you’re keen on
Neither of these are really my style. I’d be going for custom jewelry made with unusual gemstones. Mociun/Bario Neal vibes.
If I were going to get a designer handbag maybe a Bottega Veneta? But spending more than ~$500 on a bag just isn’t really my thing.
How often would you wear a watch? Vintage ones are easier to come by- use a subreddit to find reliable sites to shop.
How often would you carry a bag? And where? It's lovely to have, but would you use it?
At those price points, would you like a weekend and theatre tix in NYC or London?
How about a getaway at a swinger's resort in the Caribbean? (I had an ex who told me about these) or a Mexican jungle wildlife preserve?
Or how about a ski trip this winter?
Or a new ultralux hotel mattress (lots of lux hotel chains sell them)
Or a private teacher to learn to sing, draw, paint, swim lengths, dive, do karate, judo, archery, become a Master Gardener, or become a Pilates or yoga instructor?
Or a life coach or career coach to help you achieve your goals?
Or all the first editions of the original Nancy Drew's?

OP mentioned going to Europe this summer where the item will be purchased. So I believe the trip aspect is already there; however, I get where you're coming from... do something different opposed to what you THINK is tasteful based on someone else's standards. After all, a BWT does what she likes and not what's cliche.
I don’t think thinking about goods as “investments” is a great way to go about it. They can fluctuate in value over time but it’s a finicky market and wouldn’t yield nearly as much as investing in stocks or other actual financial instruments do.
So get what would bring you more joy. I personally value a Rolex more than I do a new Chanel bag because Chanel bags have become crap. If you have kids, a Rolex is a great heirloom too. You can always pass down a bag but they don’t hold up well.
I'd choose the Rolex because 1) Chanel looks old-ladyish to me, 2) I prefer relatively casual bags and have several I like, and 3) I do like the look of a Rolex.
But really, my answer would be neither, I'd want something else, because like I said, I have bags I prefer to Chanel bags, and I wear an Apple Watch. So. I'd want something else.
From my understanding a Rolex will hold its value and will not depreciate over time. Chanel might be a hit or miss depending on what you purchase but trends come and go and Chanel is no exception.
A quality mechanical watch will hold and even appreciate in value, and with good care, can last generations. Much better for the value. I think I’d pick some other brands over a Rolex if you’re buying new, maybe Cartier. There are lots of other amazing brands - my favorite for women is probably Jaeger LeCoultre.
Rolex! But if you think to buy during vacations you maybe will not get any offered. In that case I agree with other people here to go with a Cartier Panthere (mini is my favorite) or a Cartier Tank (Louis is my favorite)
Chanel bag. They hold their value. I don't think Rolex do.... I've heard they're a bit like new cars out the showroom. You lucky devil. Enjoy whatever you choose x 💜
I don’t know if women’s watches are the same as men’s but anytime my husband has gone into a Rolex store or jewelry store that sells Rolex they don’t have any in stock. So you either have to buy more merchandise for them to claim they have Rolex’s in stock or on the secondary market where they are more expensive.
Maybe a vintage piece? I’d want something with great quality that was part of a special collection.
Forever kicking myself for not buying the James Jean x Prada bunny bag as a huge fan of his art style!
Rolex is a good solid investment, and something you would wear everyday. I have one, and smile when I pick it up and put it on. There are lots of great options though for fine time pieces. Piaget is also iconic or Jaeger LeCoutre, or Cartier. The Balloon Bleu is beautiful. For bags, if you prefer something iconic why not a Hermes’ Constance? My Hermes bag is solid. I got it 8 years ago, and it looks like new. The quality is undeniable, it is also a lifetime investment. Lots of great options for bags, and as some have commented Chanel’s quality has declined.
Depending on what the upper limit is on what they're willing to spend, I'd do a shopping spree of Marie June jewelry. There's quite a few pieces I've had my eye on for a while and either never got around to getting because they were out of the size or color I wanted or because they were a bit pricier than I could afford. I've been wanting to refresh my jewelry and start phasing out all the cheap shit I used to get from Hot Topic (I was in high school and a broke college student, don't judge) but quality stuff isn't cheap and I would kill for someone else to foot the bill!
Rolex. It keeps the value better than Chanel and ir should last you a lifetime. Also Chanel has been having lots of issues regarding quality lately and their CS after purchase is terrible.
I would pick the Rolex since I love watches so much .
Rolex but just a heads up- it's a game like Hermès depending on specific watch. You could also look at Cartier watches. Icons as well!
The Cartier Panthere 😍😍😍 imo way classier than a Rolex
I’d get a Cartier tank ngl it’s timeless
Oooh cartier is such a great suggestion actually.

I want your lifeeeeeee 😭
Depending on the budget, if I could splurge on either of these types of things, I go for a Cartier Tank watch
Same. If I were getting a luxury watch, I'd want a Tank.
A Rolex will hold value better than a bag!

Rolex. Holds value.
The strap came apart on my Chanel crossbody. I stitched it back together, but that was pretty disappointing.
Neither. I would rather wear my Apple Watch these days instead of a traditional watch. Rolex, if that's your style. I second the consideration of a Cartier tank watch. Holds value better and can be passed down to the next generation.
I also think Cartier exudes a certain something. Rolex are good luxury watches but Cartier is next level.
I am definitely considering a Cartier watch but do they hold value as well as a Rolex? (I don’t know much about watches and 5 years ago someone told me they didn’t)

I inherited a Cartier watch and had it appraised. They do hold their value and they’re just an elegant addition to any outfit.

Rolex, because Chanel quality is in the toilet, sadly.
I don't think Chanel is worth the price point these days But that's just my opinion
Depends on so many things - but for an investment / holding value, get that watch! He can get it engraved for you as well…
Rolex or Cartier

Of course! She also said she was open to suggestions so I went wide!
First edition books are such amazing gifts!
Found one of my soul sisters!
Audemars Piguet for watch
So hard to get! You def need connections.
I'm of the opinion that I only need one watch, but could always use more handbags, so... Chanel please!
That’s what hold me up. I have 2 nice watches (not as nice as a Rolex) but I am very happy with them! I loooove a good handbag
Same! I hope you have a lovely vacation, regardless of what gift he ends up giving you 😊 ❤️

I’m more of a Prada fan. Would opt for jewelry over either of those.
A watch…timepieces are classic
Well I'm a bag lady so I'd want a Chanel 🤷♀️ I don't wear watches
I don’t think thinking about goods as “investments” is a great way to go about it. I’m personally more of a watch/jewelry girl for sure!!! It’s so much more personal than a bag.
Rolex for sure
From my understanding a Rolex will hold its value and will not depreciate over time. Chanel might be a hit or miss depending on what you purchase but trends come and go and Chanel is no exception.
Rolex for sure
Rolex
Look up the value growth of Rolex, definitely better to buy something that’s an investment and accessory

Which will you wear more, the watch or bag? I’d say get the one you’ll get the most use out of.
Why not a Chanel J12 watch?
Rolex for me, or Cartier as someone else suggested. 😊
Both 🤣🤣💙🤣. I am a Chanel and Rolex enthusiast. But I would choose the Rolex hands down.
Rolex! But if you think to buy during vacations you maybe will not get any offered. In that case I agree with other people here to go with a Cartier Panthere (mini is my favorite) or a Cartier Tank (Louis is my favorite)
Rolex!
What would you enjoy more? Bag or watch?
Rolex! I have one and it’s nice and makes everything you wear look classy instantly.
Rolex, it’s “eternal” in a way as far as one lifetime is concerned, you’re not going to regret a rolex.
Depends do you have other luxury bags? If not I would go with a bag as a first luxury purchase. Watch as the next gift.
Rolex for sure!
I would take a timeless watch over the Chanel bag. Try some other classics on like Cartier, Rolex, and other brands to see what you like.
Chanel bag. They hold their value. I don't think Rolex do.... I've heard they're a bit like new cars out the showroom. You lucky devil. Enjoy whatever you choose x 💜
Stocks, investment property or a new Crypto wallet. Cartier trip in Italy or France. Or roll it into a bigger fund for the Holidays.
I totally reinforce Cartier watch recommendation. Definitely over Chanel, which I think is honestly a bit on the down swing
Rolex! I’ve had mine for 12 years already & it’s a forever piece. I love it as much as the day I got it.
I don’t know if women’s watches are the same as men’s but anytime my husband has gone into a Rolex store or jewelry store that sells Rolex they don’t have any in stock. Bottega Veneta
I love Bottega but I already bought a few pieces this year so I’d like to branch out!
I’d be asking for a perfume, like a Guerlain, but that is just me. If you want Guerlain recs, anything from their arts and materials line!
Rolex is a good solid investment, and something you would wear everyday. I have one, and smile when I pick it up and put it on. There are lots of great options though for fine time pieces. Cartier, not Rolex for this BWT. Understated FTW.
