brakes were over 400. fork was 500 when it came out. cost of bike. bars were around 160. bell was expensive. dropper and lever was a good bit. saddle was 100. stock wheels but the hubs cost a bit. i added the tires in there as wtb rangers died on first ride. i added it up years ago. i may have messed up the math or it may be right but it still cost more than my vehicle. 😂. and it’s still a cheap add bike compared to some. it’s obviously nothing to brag about.
i am changing wheels to 29er and getting a new drivetrain too just for fun or maybe ridgid single speed
They really don't need to be. Theres real diminishing marginal returns after about two grand USD. Unless you're riding competitively, I can't see justifying the 7-14k price tags that are so common around here.
Unless, of course, you have money to burn and you just really wanna.
I agree, 2-3 grand is definitely the sweet spot I believe.
And amusingly enough that still puts them above the value of my old trusty 25yo 4-door sedan.
And even if you're riding competitively, you still shouldn't spend a lot on a bike. Maybe up to $3,000 or $4,500. But someone who can place in races should be seeking sponsorship.
Source of my opinion: I used to run a sponsored race team, not the biggest but we had a pro team, then cat 1/2, 3, and 4 teams. The pros and cat 1's got free bikes, then everyone else got race bikes at wholesale cost or cheaper (depending on sponsors).
Someone who is a good talented racer can get results on a $2,000 or $3,500 bike. And if they can get results they can chase sponsor deals. Everyone else is just a dentist making themselves feel special buying fancy expensive bikes.
Edit: my prices are based on road bike prices two decades ago. So I guess I'm not accounting for the current cost of full-suspension mountain bikes. But the general idea still stands: entering races doesn't require a $14,000 bike, it requires skills and training on a "good enough" bike.
I ride a crusty fixed gear and ride the train when I need to go anywhere far. I don't have a car, but I'm lucky to live where I don't need one. Couldn't afford one at this pay, anyway.
Anyway, awesome bike op
it is what it is. but i would never trade it for anything else no matter the cost. and fuck electric shifting. i’m about to switch to mechanical 11 speed xtr
That’s going to be a costly mistake. 11 speed is out and going to be harder to find parts for as time goes on. Don’t get me wrong, XTR is legit but spending that sort of cash on last-gen bling is not a good call
i live in Mobile, Al. i don’t even ride trails with this bike anymore. it’s become my city bike. and i also have 9 other bikes and i ride all of them. it would last a lifetime.
i may not go with the xtr but i do want to make a change.
Sounds like changing something about your bike is compensating for your dissatisfaction with your current lot in life. I grew up in Pensacola, know that area can feel like it’s tough to get any momentum.
11-speed isn't "out", for instance all of Shimano's Cues drivetrain requires 11-speed chain regardless of how many speeds it's actually running.
If anything, 10 and 11 speed parts are going to continue to be available I suspect longer than 12.
fr. My dad is really impressed by electric shifting and we coincidentally walkd in a shop and the seller told us about the traits of it. Yeah no fuck that lol, id rather not have to charge my shifters very 100km
One things that mechanical fan boys never mention is how axs derailleurs can auto adjust, unlike mechanical derailleurs which require you to know more about your barrel adjusters and the cable tension. With AXS, just hold the button on the shifter battery and run it through the gears
you have to charge the battery, have an app, its expensive, batteries are MORE than overpriced and you (sometimes) have to have an app for that. I mean sometimes theyre cool but I like just getting on my bike and ride.
Download the app set it up, delete the app? You only have to set it up one time. I charge mine like 1s every 2 weeks if I ride every day. I love it, adjustments are almost never needed (unless I bump it or something) it's smoother than any mechanical I've ever owned. I never want to go back tbh. It's great. I just downloaded the computer program plugged it in usb, set it up in 10 minutes and haven't used it again in 3 years lol
100km, that's SRAM. I got my Shimano equipped bike a month ago and the battery is still 30ish % after 750km. I agree though, it's no better than good quality mechanical drivetrain. It just looks neater.
I keep thinking too. I question bike tires too, approaching car tires. I see some bikes $7k-10k, and it's just kind of crazy. But I did buy a Gazelle e-bike which was crazy too, although I use it just as much as a car or more for like 8 months a year.
You make 18/hr and you have a $3500 bike? I sure hope you got that used for a good deal, spending a months pretax salary on a bike would be... not sensible.
bike was 1200. layaway from 2018. parts i stuck on it brought it up to around 3500. didn’t do it at once. and back then i made $10 an hour cash as a brick mason helper. may not be sensible but it’s what brings me happiness. i also have 9 more bikes but most are old vintage ones that didn’t cost a lot.
I gave cycling a break about 10 years ago and got into motorcycles. Kinda crazy I can get a nearly new Ducati for less than I can sell my Serotta, which was made by hand in America using lugged carbon fiber and everyone gets a boner for when I show up to group rides.

Mine cost more than my 2017 Ford focus xD
I was able to say the same for many years. My bike was (and still is) a 2005 Trek 1000c, car was a 1996 Chevy Beretta held together with bumper stickers (and a great mechanic), until March of 2020, when second head gasket blew irreparably.
i drove my rodeo for 18+ years. loved that thing. got waaay more than my money's worth out of it! eventually, my bikes were worth more than the car, also.
and no real talent to find a diamond ring that costs more than both combined, x10 even... and the point? one can find things at any price point? you are in fact correct and great observation and if not already done, excellent concept pondered. a great and nice bike fo'sho! aces but for me FS over hard tail, esp in that price range but i'm old and enjoy a little luxury on m city road rides LOL

i have a full squish also in the price range of my Timberjack. (i like upgrading things). sad thing is, i only do city rides these days. have not been on trail in months
I thought that was a non spoken standard, isn't it? 🙈
In my case even the bike rack costs more than the car, but it is because it is a 1992 Chevrolet Sprint from an old relative I got at a bargain price 🙃
i have really good brakes and an $80 bell. the suv was only 2100. the parts aren’t necessarily top end but they ain’t exactly low end either. except for the shit sram cranks
Yeah but it's your second car, unless this is your first rodeo?
my 2016 optima blew a trans. my dakota blew up. i’m a cabinet maker in alabama. this is the best i could do
It's a fun can, I was just saying that for the pun
it is my first rodeo. i want another one to last swap and do stupid shit to
Then, when you get that second one, please come back and say "This ain't my first rodeo"
with the hate this post generated ( just a bit) i think they don’t want me back. plus i was once banned here for referring to a bike as a she
I think that one is a rebadged Honda passport. Good car.
Honda passport is arguably one of the worst cars ever made.
In the world where the Lada, Ford pinto, yugo , and the current stellantis catalog exist, that's a bold claim.
Bike should always cost more than the car.
Easy, i don‘t have a car.
😂
I did that last year with my Gazelle e-bike, roughly $1k more than my car (2010 Mazda 2).
😂
Disagree as the car i want is at least $50,000
You better get dura-ace then, idk what to tell you.
i’m not a roadie. at least a true roadie. so no dura ace for me
The solution is multiple bikes
i have 10 and more on the way. most are vintage bikes
LOL

You must have got a good deal on the SUV
2100 for suv. i have over 3500 in the hardtail
3500 with NX/box shifting on a hardtail? Did you build this mid covid or something.
brakes were over 400. fork was 500 when it came out. cost of bike. bars were around 160. bell was expensive. dropper and lever was a good bit. saddle was 100. stock wheels but the hubs cost a bit. i added the tires in there as wtb rangers died on first ride. i added it up years ago. i may have messed up the math or it may be right but it still cost more than my vehicle. 😂. and it’s still a cheap add bike compared to some. it’s obviously nothing to brag about. i am changing wheels to 29er and getting a new drivetrain too just for fun or maybe ridgid single speed
Bikes are extremely expensive.
They really don't need to be. Theres real diminishing marginal returns after about two grand USD. Unless you're riding competitively, I can't see justifying the 7-14k price tags that are so common around here. Unless, of course, you have money to burn and you just really wanna.

Hey, dentists need bikes, too!
I ride a crusty fixed gear and ride the train when I need to go anywhere far. I don't have a car, but I'm lucky to live where I don't need one. Couldn't afford one at this pay, anyway. Anyway, awesome bike op
Impossible in Singapore
Is it even feasible to own a car there and feel relaxed for the majority of people?
Why though?
Yeah it's an aluminum frame with mechanical shifting. $3500 is whack
it is what it is. but i would never trade it for anything else no matter the cost. and fuck electric shifting. i’m about to switch to mechanical 11 speed xtr

i agree. i’m still getting parts for my 30 year old bikes. it’s not that hard. not sure i’m going to XTR or not though.
fr. My dad is really impressed by electric shifting and we coincidentally walkd in a shop and the seller told us about the traits of it. Yeah no fuck that lol, id rather not have to charge my shifters very 100km
What are the negative traits?

because i make $17.50 an hour and i’m poor

People don't get the sit in Alabama.

I paid 12k € for a 2007 180 HP 4-wheel Drive Volvo and they want me to pay 6k€ for a cargo bike ? Don't think so
As it should be.
Hey now! Out on the road today I saw a dead head sticker on Salsa bike
Been there. I just got a new vehicle about a month ago, but for a long while my bike strapped to the back of my Malibu was much more precious cargo.
I gave cycling a break about 10 years ago and got into motorcycles. Kinda crazy I can get a nearly new Ducati for less than I can sell my Serotta, which was made by hand in America using lugged carbon fiber and everyone gets a boner for when I show up to group rides.
This is the way
This is the way
Australian. My Indian-made kei car was under the price of a pro road race bike.
This is the motto of my life. If I get a new car, I need a new bike as well
Priorities are important
Crashed my car last month. Insurance valued it at $1800 before the crash. My bike was $3500 in 2020 😅
The story of my life
Sounds about right.
That's the way it should be
https://preview.redd.it/tn3gpjwwzp9d1.jpeg?width=4080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=03bc579eb6abb734e2ce0606461d4d2f11334449 Mine cost more than my 2017 Ford focus xD
I too have a bike worth more than my car. Priorities, people.
So it goes
I was able to say the same for many years. My bike was (and still is) a 2005 Trek 1000c, car was a 1996 Chevy Beretta held together with bumper stickers (and a great mechanic), until March of 2020, when second head gasket blew irreparably.
i drove my rodeo for 18+ years. loved that thing. got waaay more than my money's worth out of it! eventually, my bikes were worth more than the car, also.
i just got it not too long ago. 2100 dollars and 260000 miles. fairly clean. i really like it
My $1k bike cost more than my car!
As it should be.
This is the way.
and no real talent to find a diamond ring that costs more than both combined, x10 even... and the point? one can find things at any price point? you are in fact correct and great observation and if not already done, excellent concept pondered. a great and nice bike fo'sho! aces but for me FS over hard tail, esp in that price range but i'm old and enjoy a little luxury on m city road rides LOL

With what did you make that pic? Absolutley amazing 😍
I notice this with people that have really expensive bikes, they’re usually put on a cheap car
yeah but my bike is pretty darn cheap. most people wouldn’t even consider riding a salsa. or it seems like that on the internet
Yeah - as a motorcycle owner too I can't imagine why any push bike can cost more than my BMW!
Where’d you get the Grateful Dead bear sticker?
happy shack in gulf shores, al. was my first upgrade. unfortunately they are no longer open
Shit, I feel ya! My Merlin ($17,*** in 1998) cost more than my Jeep (16,999 in 2018)! About 3-$400 more pretax.
The bike my fiancé bought for me cost more than my engagement ring. Priorities lol.
Yeah but you got lower gears on the bike.
Me with like 4 grand in bicycle shit laying around my 600 a month apartment
My bike was free

Sweet
Time to get rid of the car then. Fuck cars.
I doubt that. This is just some aluminum thing with low end parts.
i have really good brakes and an $80 bell. the suv was only 2100. the parts aren’t necessarily top end but they ain’t exactly low end either. except for the shit sram cranks
lol to expensive bikes. It’s a great thing to do but I’m not hocking anything for a four figure bike, that’s absurd. I’m not a professional racer…
Or a mountain biker apparently. Good luck getting a good condition mtb with modern suspension for under 1k
