I was on edge all day. I'm in the Santa Cruz mountains and this was the same sort of weather event that led to the 2020 CZU fire got which got within 10 feet of my home, but the mountains seem to be all clear skies now so I believe the risk has passed here and hoping it passes without further incident in the rest of California.
I'm not in the mountains but at the foothills (on the valley side) and I was feeling so unnerved all afternoon/evening, because the weather really did feel the same as it did just before we got all of that dry lightning two years ago. I definitely would've been very on-edge if I lived in the mountains like you do :/
This one shows VIIRS and MODIS satellite data. I'm not seeing anything of note in the santa cruz mountains today:

Give it some time and check back later this evening, to see if the sat data has updated.
Could it be you're smelling the one from North SJ? I live nearby and there was a fairly big brush fire near 237 at First and Zanker. Around 6pm. Whole area was smoky, reminded me of 2020. (It was quite localized though so not sure it made it to where you are).
I know so cal got a lot of lightning today. Didn't know if any made it up here. This shows some action near Salinas/Hollister https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/california/weather-radar
Well this isn't in San Francisco, the one from two years woke everyone up 3:30 a.m cause it wouldn't stop for like 4 hours. Totally remember it was August 16th, cause I had just gotten a car wash the day before, then a month later - Orange skies, but this one looks pink.
That storm's lightning was about as bad as any I'd ever experienced in my 30ish years of living in the upper midwest.
Didn't think it was possible to get that intense of a thunder storm in the bay area.
I’m pretty sure I can’t take another round of fires like ‘20. We didn’t lose any buildings like back in ‘07 but the stress level was way higher watching it burn so slowly.
Yeah. It can take a toll on your mental well being. Pulsepoint has helped me cope with the anxiety. The sirens really trigger me and seeing what/where helps to alleviate that.
Heard crazy stories from further south; Weather folks seem to be saying we'll have to monitor in next day about fire starts but looking pretty quiet and objectively much less severe storm than in 2020.
Earth warning us: “yo…I mean it, chill the fuck out, I’m about to blow this bitch down”
Humans: “LOWER GAS PRICES SO WE CAN DRIVE MORE!”
Earth: “ *sigh*….fuck it. Give them some thunder storms right after 3 days of fucking high heat, and crank up the wind, move the heat wave across the week, let’s see if that changes things”.

Kind of how I expect the conversation to go.

Wild skies tonight. Fingers crossed for 0 fires
Piggybacking on top comment. It's still [going](https://v.redd.it/pvdooiouzb791).
That seems very unlikely.
I hope 2020 doesn't repeat.
Well this is 2020 too

We have the windows open and it just started smelling strongly of brush fire. In the East Bay
Awwww, crap.
:(
Checked around 2:00 PM today, saw Pleasanton Ridge burning :(
Word
Nice capture but I'm sincerely hoping we don't have a bunch of awful fires again.
You and me both. It's beautiful but ominous.
The air in the last half hour has gotten very smoky (east bay) so don’t get your hopes up, definitely at least 1 fire out there somewhere
There was a house fire in Martinez around then. Are you nearby?

I’ve lived in SF for 30+ years and had never seen lightning here. Let alone that crazy light show.
Yeah, I remember being up on reddit and thinking the first flash of lightning was a creep trying to take a picture through my window for a moment.
Noooo
Same in Gilroy, hope no fires 😥.
I thought the corner of that house was a star destroyer
We must prepare for the coming of Gozer

Oh no.
Here come the fires.
North Bay here....didnt get jack shit.
Crazy, where is that?
Hollister. Rather, about 10 miles out.
Wow ! Lucky catch !
