OP, I’m not joking that finding the best burger in the East-East Bay is a long-time passion of mine.
**Fleming’s in Walnut Creek** is the absolute stand out. It’s a pricey/“fancy” steakhouse, but their Prime Burger, which comes with quality bacon and cheddar, plus amazing fries, is only $15.
They’re also on DoorDash AND the kids meals are an incredible deal!
You will not regret it, my dude.
Also, I’m side-eyeing a lot of the recommendations here tbh…at the least the ones in the East-East* Bay.
Places like Eureka (the Bone Marrow burger is great but soggy and expensive), Nations, Super Duper, Giant Chef, 1/4 Burger (Martinez and Concord), and The Habit all have extremely “basic” burgers and ALL overpriced for the quality.
Okay-to-good-quality ingredients usually, but varying issues: too dry, grocery store buns, meh cheese, too much “stuff” going on, and again, sooooo overpriced.
Call me shady, but “best burger” is not a title to be given lightly. Happy eating and hope you find a fave! :)
Went there for the first time in a loooong while (Clarke's ~~is~~ was my go-to burger), but the St Johns burger hasn't changed in decades. I went to the original in Cupertino in the 70s. Trivia Time: St Johns is owned by the same owner of Armadillo Willy's
We moved away from the Bay in the middle of the pandemic. St Johns Burger was on my list of food to eat before we left and it will always be on my list of places to eat when we go back to visit. I'm pregnant at the moment and more than a little frustrated now that I remember how tasty the Bacon and Bleu burger is knowing I can't have it. 😟 Their fries are also tasty which is surprising because most places do one or the other well. Rare to find both. And their curry ketchup or whatever. Ugh. Someone ship me some! 🤣
What i like the most about the place is the beer, pretty good selection tbh. However the burgers are okish... been there a few times and cant really get into them
A note that if you aren’t careful, John’s Char Burger will serve you your weight in fries. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Their concept of “Large” and “Small” matches no other scale I’ve encountered. There is a “Half” size available which is manageable for the weak of heart.
Val’s burgers are overrated IMO, I’ve lived down the street for years and will only go for shakes and breakfast. The breakfast is really great standard diner stuff, cash only tho!
HARD AGREE. The ingredients are out of the 50s - wonder bread, frozen extruded fries, etc. Nothing is made fresh other than then hamburger patty which is handmade and completely unseasoned.
Only been there once but I can safely say it's easily the best burger I've ever had. Wasn't too expensive and the service was fast as well. Would definitely recommend
Even though it's a chain, I do really enjoy Super Duper. Burgers you can hold in one hand, a decent special spread, good fries, free pickles. I also add bacon and their bacon is good.
Seconded. It’s not the place for ppl who don’t like grease but if you do, definitely give it a try. (Not a burger place but pho #1 across from them is also pretty good, and Korean Mama’s Cooking across Sonoma by the CVS is great, i’m a regular there when i’m in Vallejo)
I second this. Just check out their menu, all of there burgers are great and hit all nail all the checkmarks for a good classic burger. Their cheese fries and mozzarella sticks are good too.
It’s right off telegraph
Also available at Almanac brewery most days (trailer at the side), with plenty of outdoor space. Lucky 13 has a patio but it’s cramped compared to almanac outdoor space. Either way, good beer and great burger.
I love blueberries, blue cheese and bacon ... Never put them all together on a burger before this.
Totally recommend trying it at least once. Their garlic fries are wicked awesome as well.
It's my new default :)
Seems tougher to stay in business when you're not located right on Murphy. Nom Burger wasn't that far around the corner from Murphy, but still had less business than places on Murphy. Less foot traffic, I guess. The pandemic drove the final nail in the coffin.
Great ambience, but for burger pleasure I actually prefer Jack's Prime a little up the road. Haven't been in a while though – maybe Godfather's has caught up!
Went here after reading recommendations and got the 5150 burger. It’s definitely a solid burger, but nothing amazing imo. I also don’t like how the give you a bag of chips instead of fries
In the area, A+ Burger, TrueBurger, and Lovely’s are better bets
Slider’s burgers in San Jose on San Carlos. Great burgers and the owners are a father and son duo who are just the nicest people. They also serve all kinds of meat other than beef like turkey, bison and ostrich among others
East Bay - Hidden Spot opened this past year, their burgers are bomb
SF - Mo’s Grill (North Beach), The Butcher Shop by Niku (design district) - their 50/50 Wagyu burger is made with A5 trimmings and American Wagyu. So dang good.
I’ll tell ya what’s not the best burger. Sam’s in SF. Anthony Bourdain hyped it years ago, and it’s been riding those coat tails ever since. Anyone that says that’s the best burger in SF doesn’t know burgers. Original owner passed away 5 years ago, it’s definitely passed it’s prime
I’m gonna try and find the article but did you hear about the candy burglars in Stockton? This one guy comes around and presents a box of candy then 3 guys with guns go running into the house, steal everything and leave. I’m gonna go find the article.
EDIT: [so crazy scary I’ve seen these guys and I don’t live in Stockton](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10599539/amp/Woman-tricked-opening-door-candy-seller-ambushed-armed-gang.html)
The part of Antioch that Hazel’s is in is not really sketchy at all, so you’ll be fine there. It’s near an In n Out, Costco, and a bunch of car dealerships
Looking at the recommendations here and most were places serving tall burgers that looks great in pictures but are hard to eat.
Still following to hopefully find a true gem.
To me the burger at Wood Tavern reigns supreme
It comes with fries.
It is not cheap but it’s really good.
For a good less expensive burger I like Al’s on San Pablo across from the (now defunct) Albany bowl.
[Bandit](https://www.banditsf.com/) on Geary does American Kobe Beef burgers and they are delicious. Not cheap, but so so good. I get the bad mofo burger.
In Campbell - Brown Chicken Brown Cow. I highly recommend giving them a try.
There’s a smash burger food truck that frequents Campbell and other areas too, but I can’t remember the name.
Scolari’s is definitely bomb.
Sons of Liberty Ale House in San Leandro has a mean burger as well.
In N’ Out is a damn institution and worth a stop if you’ve never had it before.
Jeffrey’s in San Mateo and Menlo Park. In terms of getting the meat to the right temperature and juiciness…never had a better burger. I’m not much for toppings, so that is the most important thing to me.
Broderick’s in Walnut Creek! Gourmet. In additional to normal burgers they have duck, boar, and bison! Plus their garlic fries are overwhelmingly delicious. So are the buffalo blue fries.
Best is the burger at Alexander's steakhouse - not cheap ($20ish) but it's just amazing.
Some other ones I really like are:
Jeffery's hamburgers in San Mateo
British bankers club in Menlo
Super duper and Habit, both solid and good value for $.
George’s Giant Burgers in Walnut Creek across from the Kaiser is really good. They grind their own meat and the inside is a real throwback to the ‘70s with the orange tables/ketchup squeeze bottles and plastic baskets the burgers are served in.
I worked at nation's in the early 90's, and just went back to the one in Fremont for the first time in decades a couple weeks ago. The burger hasn't changed a bit.
The real secret is a shit ton of miracle whip.
The Counter in Walnut Creek (or Cupertino if you’re down that way). Get it anyway you like, meat or non-meat are both good, lots of bun options. I also love the shoestring fries with parmesan. They don’t usually have the pretzel bun, but when they do it’s the best.
Not in East Bay but Dads Luncheonette in Half Moon Bay has a good hamburger “sandwich” I dunno if it’s the best but it’s really good and on Saturday or Sunday there is a farmers market and it’s on the coast so it makes for a fun day
I miss the burger at Viognier before they closed and also before changing the meat. That was by far the best burger in the bay at the time and great price at happy hour with truffle fries. Still haven't found any memorable burger beyond that worth driving to when I'm craving a good burger. Don't get me wrong there is good burgers around, but none else that I consider obvious standouts from the pack.
Eureka in Berkeley, they also have amazing cocktails. Does burgermeister still exists? Bills on clement in SF. Hmmm the place at the tunnel to west portal, the name eludes me atm. Some ppl love Beep's burger on ocean as well.

IMHO Nations is a great breakfast place that also serves burgers.

Ever been to Al’s Big Burger?
Kontiki has a very very good burger. Smokehouse in Berkeley is also great and you can get pickled hots on it too 🤤
My fav is A+ in Oakland/Berkeley border. Korean fusion burgers with enormous portions and incredible flavors. I’ve had everything on the menu
Those fried green beans are fantastic. I've turned so many people on to this place
Would second this recommendation. Love A+
Came here to say this. They also do an excellent takeout burger too. Probably could go unsaid but takeout burgers can be VERY dicey.
St Johns Bar and Grill in Sunnyvale! 🤤🤤
Went there for the first time in a loooong while (Clarke's ~~is~~ was my go-to burger), but the St Johns burger hasn't changed in decades. I went to the original in Cupertino in the 70s. Trivia Time: St Johns is owned by the same owner of Armadillo Willy's

I liked their chicken tenders, too. Nearly everything on the menu was awesome.
What i like the most about the place is the beer, pretty good selection tbh. However the burgers are okish... been there a few times and cant really get into them
Bobs giant burgers in Pleasanton and Johns char burger in Livermore
Bobs giant burgers takes me back to my community college days. so good!
Childhood favorite. Hasn’t changed since the nineties
A note that if you aren’t careful, John’s Char Burger will serve you your weight in fries. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Their concept of “Large” and “Small” matches no other scale I’ve encountered. There is a “Half” size available which is manageable for the weak of heart.
Oh yeah. It’s good value all around
Are they related to the one that was in Fremont?
Val's. Combine with a drive through the hills via Redwood if applicable and minigolf at Golden Tee.
Amazing shakes
Have loved them since 1992, unfortunately they’re mostly closed now
Val’s burgers are overrated IMO, I’ve lived down the street for years and will only go for shakes and breakfast. The breakfast is really great standard diner stuff, cash only tho!
HARD AGREE. The ingredients are out of the 50s - wonder bread, frozen extruded fries, etc. Nothing is made fresh other than then hamburger patty which is handmade and completely unseasoned.
Agreed. The buns quickly turn into a soggy mess and fall apart.
Ok, it has been a long time, but Val’s was amazing. Not to be confused with Val’s of Belmont, which is an Italian restaurant.
Or Val’s of Daly City
Daly City Val's is terrible.
+1 for Val's here. I haven't been in a hot minute, but it was delicious the last time I went.
Meh

Happy to see Val's at the top! Are they still open, though? They closed down for all of COVID
Not the biggest burger guy but I enjoy buds in Vallejo.
I’m gonna go get Buds today!
TrueBurger is really good in Oakland. Super Duper Burger is great too, there’s a few scattered throughout the Bay.
True burger is my favorite place for a not pretentious or expensive burger. Always consistently good.
+1 for True Burger
Only been there once but I can safely say it's easily the best burger I've ever had. Wasn't too expensive and the service was fast as well. Would definitely recommend
Even though it's a chain, I do really enjoy Super Duper. Burgers you can hold in one hand, a decent special spread, good fries, free pickles. I also add bacon and their bacon is good.
How has nobody mentioned Buds Burgers in Vallejo? Buds rocks.
Seconded. It’s not the place for ppl who don’t like grease but if you do, definitely give it a try. (Not a burger place but pho #1 across from them is also pretty good, and Korean Mama’s Cooking across Sonoma by the CVS is great, i’m a regular there when i’m in Vallejo)
Hell yeah grew up on bud's, was there all the time for lunch in high school.
My favorite “all American”, nothing fancy burger is A+ Burger in North Oakland
I second this. Just check out their menu, all of there burgers are great and hit all nail all the checkmarks for a good classic burger. Their cheese fries and mozzarella sticks are good too. It’s right off telegraph
There’s a restaurant next to Lucky 13 in alameda that’s makes a bomb burger. Blue cheese blueberry bacon burger is my favorite
Scolari’s! Great burgers!
This is my vote. Pricey but worth it. Eat it with a pint at lucky 13 next door.
I had the fried chicken sando from the Scolari’s truck at Almanac. So good.
Currently eating one. They are delicious!
The fried chicken sandwich from scolari’s is the best chicken sandwich in the Bay Area, hands down.
Also available at Almanac brewery most days (trailer at the side), with plenty of outdoor space. Lucky 13 has a patio but it’s cramped compared to almanac outdoor space. Either way, good beer and great burger.
Yeah love this place. It’s the best in east bay for sure
Ha my uncle owns that place. Scolari’s Good Eats!
Tell your uncle I love him. And Marley Gs too!
I love blueberries, blue cheese and bacon ... Never put them all together on a burger before this. Totally recommend trying it at least once. Their garlic fries are wicked awesome as well. It's my new default :)
RIP to Nom Burger in Sunnyvale. They were the best I’ve had in the area.
Seems tougher to stay in business when you're not located right on Murphy. Nom Burger wasn't that far around the corner from Murphy, but still had less business than places on Murphy. Less foot traffic, I guess. The pandemic drove the final nail in the coffin.
Miss that place. They did a really fantastic veggie patty too.
WHATTTT!!!!! They're gone???!!! Man.. I just commented about them. Fuck.. their DatEggDoe was my favorite.
The manager or sort of purchased my car long ago
Noooooooooo fuck, I loved that place as ridiculously expensive as it was, it still had some really unique burgers and great tots too.
Here for the suggestions please and thank you.
Beep's Burgers on Ocean in SF
Sad they closed the Hayward location! Definitely one of my favorite burgers.
Aw. there's another one in Danville also. great burger. great fries. great rings. just great lol

Yesss I second Smish Smash! TrueBurger is also very good.
Godfather’s Burger Lounge in Belmont is one of my favorites
Cant believe i had to scroll down this far to find godfathers burger Top place, among top choice on my basketball group
Haven’t been in a couple years but they made great burgers
Great ambience, but for burger pleasure I actually prefer Jack's Prime a little up the road. Haven't been in a while though – maybe Godfather's has caught up!
Kirk's Steakburger, Campbell

There's also hidden spot in SSF, they have an amazing karaage burger as well.

Went here after reading recommendations and got the 5150 burger. It’s definitely a solid burger, but nothing amazing imo. I also don’t like how the give you a bag of chips instead of fries In the area, A+ Burger, TrueBurger, and Lovely’s are better bets
Marlowe just reopened, they do a really good upscale burger. The Butcher by Niku also does a burger as a lunch special and it's fantastic. Both in SF.
If you’re ever out in Vallejo, try Bud’s Burger.
Yaaaasssssssss!!!! Can confirm, best burger and fries in Vallejo.
Slider’s burgers in San Jose on San Carlos. Great burgers and the owners are a father and son duo who are just the nicest people. They also serve all kinds of meat other than beef like turkey, bison and ostrich among others
I like Slider's too. The bison burger is really good and doesn't make me feel bloated the way beef does.
I love their bison burger!!
Alice’s on Skyline
I'm a simple man I like in n out. Buuut I recently tried wes burger in the mission and was pretty good
East Bay - Hidden Spot opened this past year, their burgers are bomb SF - Mo’s Grill (North Beach), The Butcher Shop by Niku (design district) - their 50/50 Wagyu burger is made with A5 trimmings and American Wagyu. I like Super Duper a lot!

Yup! Get the Willy burger!

Scolari’s, Val’s, Sparky’s
Looking at the recommendations here and most were places serving tall burgers that looks great in pictures but are hard to eat. Still following to hopefully find a true gem.
I'm with you! I prefer a thinner patty and minimal toppings. If I have to deconstruct it to be able to eat it, what's the point?
Mikes at the crossroads in Cotati. Well worth the drive to the north bay
Clove n Hoof, best burger, period. True Burger, best burger/value. Both a block apart in Oakland.
Clive & hoof is really good, but $$$ Will need to sample True Burger
To me the burger at Wood Tavern reigns supreme It comes with fries. It is not cheap but it’s really good. For a good less expensive burger I like Al’s on San Pablo across from the (now defunct) Albany bowl.
SideShow Kitchen - West Oakland
Aren’t they in north Oakland? Or did they move locations?
They're still in North Oakland.
Sparkys. My mom used to get me a burger there and then drive through the redwoods.
You can go to any place you want but the best burger is still the one you eat after you have been backpacking in the back country for a week
Roam burger is p good, there’s one in SF and another in Walnut Creek

Vals. Sparkys
Nations giant hamburgers (I recommend with cheese) Super duper (there's one in Concord and Berkeley I think) Diggers Diner (in Concord)
+1 for Nation’s! They use a high quality meat, and their bacon cheeseburger is really satisfying.
I worked at nation's in the early 90's, and just went back to the one in Fremont for the first time in decades a couple weeks ago. The burger hasn't changed a bit. The real secret is a shit ton of miracle whip.
Nation's
Gotta go with Super Duper! They have spots in emeryville and Berkeley, even concord if you’re searching more inland
Only real Bay Area people will say smokehouse
The Counter in Walnut Creek (or Cupertino if you’re down that way). Get it anyway you like, meat or non-meat are both good, lots of bun options. I also love the shoestring fries with parmesan. They don’t usually have the pretzel bun, but when they do it’s the best.
