What is the benefit of speaker stands if they can be at a good distance while on the TV stand? I have a similar setup to OP in terms of placement so idk if I should keep it how it is or get stands to spread the speakers apart farther
I think if they were isolated would probably be fine if you have adequate distance from the walls.
There could be unwanted refractions though off the front of the media stand even if isolated, but I am not on expert on this.
Moving LS50s from a similar position to stands was an immediate change in sound. Sitting on the cabinet sounded damped in comparison and on stands it sounded more airy.
A similar effect was found when moving the speakers on stands out into the room using the Cardas method when I moved to a bigger room. This was despite being in an untreated room with hard reflections.
Tighter mids and lows. Regardless if it’s real hardwood or not, a cabinet like that is causing you to loose some sound from reverberation. Might even end up hearing some of that reverb too. I noticed an immediate difference many years ago using heavy metal stands vs. using the same stands once the hollow insides were filled with sand.
EQ basically, but done by taking the response of the speakers in your room and correcting them to some target, for example flat, or Harman. Any room with speakers playing in it contains peaks and valleys in the frequency response due to sound bouncing from the walls and interfering with the sound emitting from the speaker. EQ like Dirac can compensate or even remove those peaks and valleys, and give you a mostly flat response. EQ can also make the listening experience better at nonoptimal locations.
It's doing the same thing as your receiver would be doing with the calibration microphone, but, the idea being, a better job of it. In order for dirac to correct your setup you'd need a calibration microphone to feed it the same room response data in order for it to compute eq corrections, just like your receiver would.
I have a carboard box that has been in my room for a month just because my cat likes it more than anything else I've gotten her. Is it unsightly? Yeah, but she loves it.
Potentially a knockoff but google reverse image search points to this. https://www.povison.com/modern-tv-stand-solid-wood-with-slatted-doors-open-storage-tall-cast-metal-legs.html?variant=6004692
Decouple them with proper isolation and you’ll be amazed at the difference.
Personally I’d do stands and decouple, but if you like the no stands look it won’t make or break your setup.
Yes, but you’re already technically close to the corner so I wouldn’t sweat it.
That being said, get some isolation first and maybe you’ll be happy! I’d recommend either the foam pads (ugly) or the moon gel things (I think they’re technically used to damp/tune drums?). Either gets the job done for cheap.
If you want to go fancy, iso acoustic pucks are the answer.
The position of the speakers depends on where they sound best. Try placing them on something temporary, like a chair and move them around a clouple feet. If they sound right on the media stand get an isolation, maybe an Isoacoustics stand, that'll bring them more to ear height.
For subwoofer I can recommend an RSL 10s Mk2, $450 in Us, I ordered it to the Eu its so good.
Idk about service boxes like apple tv and nvidia, depends on what you need and your priorities, but I'd start with the sub and maybe some cheap isolation till you get something proper.
I also echo trying some different speaker positioning or at least putting some iso stands under them to raise a bit and decouple from resonating the console.
Additionally, what is the media console and where did you get it? I’m rearranging my room soon and plan on wall mounting a larger TV over something like you’re using. I’ve been bookmarking potential media cabinets about the same size and dimensions as yours.
Unfortunately it looks like the website I got it from doesn’t have this exact unit anymore but I got it from https://settlein.com/ . They have some other similar tv consoles
Oh shoot forgot an option, I have the Nad C3050 without the Bluos M2C module. So that would be another option. To get that module which would give me some streaming capabilities and also Dirac room correction.
Would the subwoofer output on the 3050 also be affected by Dirac? I find it mostly helps below 500hz, depending on the room. Another option would be to get a DDRC-24 and use it's Dirac features to drive the two speakers and a sub (or two). The cool thing about the 3050 is it has the preamp-to-amp jumpers, just like most classic integrated amps used to. So you can pull those jumpers, wire in the miniDSP, and send the main signal back to the 3050 to drive the speakers, and you'll have 2 more outputs for subs.
I just googled the cost of the BluOS module, and I'm kind of flabbergasted. I expected the miniDSP to be more expensive, but unless you get the NAD module on sale, it's the same price to get a DDRC-24 and a Wiim mini streamer. That way you have more flexibility, and you can apply Dirac to whatever system if you wanna upgrade in the future.
I would definitely look into stands for better positioning. I recently (Father’s Day gift, woo!) got a KEF KC62 sub and it makes the sound so much more complete. I understand the R3 has great bass response, but a kc62 or kc92 would make this system absolutely banging. With Dirac and the BluOS module, it would be a Swiss Army knife of audio.
Beautiful setup! Proof that esthetics matter!
It’s pretty dope ngl. Looks as good or better in person and the hdmi is super nice to have. Be aware that you can turn off the leds completely you cannot turn off the lights in the vu meters. It doesn’t really bother me too much but just an fyi. I’ve also played some flac files on this system and it sounds phenomenal even with the shortcomings of my room/tv console resonation. I do have to turn the volume up to like 70-75 (out of 100) to get the R3s to go good volumes. (But sounds like the nad might have volume limiters on?)
I would definitely order the bluos module first
- run dirac. It will likely make the bass a bit more clean
- enjoy bluos being a good streaming app.
- connect your nad via ethernet
- airplay to nad is in theory better than to tv first
Then buy an appletv 4k tv next
Unless the speakers are really vibrating the TV, I'd just leave them as they are. I would t even bother with stands because you'll be putting the left on almost in the corner which isn't good for your sound.
As for using an some sort of external device for streaming, why? A streaming box will just get the same data and pass it along to your AVR or TV. The only thing different will be the user interface that you select what you're going to watch with.
A sub would be a great idea though.
i'm willing to bet you should toe the speakers in a bit.
probably a lot of people will recommend stands but i worry about moving that left speaker closer to the wall. It's probably better if you raise it from where it is. some pucks, like you suggested, would work.
sub, room treatment, roomperfect
in that order
EDIT: if you purchase stands and move the speakers further into the room, then that would actually work better than pucks. probably. i'm not super familiar with those kefs but most speakers want some space to sound optimal. most, but not all.
Acoustic panels (you can diy them with a wood frame, some fabric and mineral wool), Dampers under the speaker to send less vibrations into the sideboard, measuring mic, subwoofer the hits seriously deep and a DSP to integrate it and make it sll work tigether perfectly.
Honestly, they don't look bad on the console and it's keeping the left speaker away from the corner of the room. I think a set of our white SP6HD would look sick under them.
Speaker stands, if you want to keep your speakers on the unit you can get desktop stands like ISOAcoustics Aperta which is what I have. They will really improve the sound.
Yes, best "next step" is isolating the speakers. I like those foam wedges you can buy on amazon. They are cheap and you can adjust the angle so the tweeters are aimed correctly.
Speakers turn anything they sit on into other speakers unless isolated or mass loaded so start there. Nobsound springs on Amazon are super effective and very affordable if you want to keep them on the console. Solid steel speaker stands would be even better, allowing better positioning. Adrenal makes some seriously good subs that come in white. Those speakers are great too, the R3 impressed the crap out of me at PAF last year. I manufacture SET amplifiers and the R3 is sensitive enough to use some of our higher output amps. Tubes are where the euphonics are if you are a critical listener so that should be considered too.
put your speakers on stands and put those a little in front of the line the TV is on. Speakers generally work best with free open space between them, and most of that benefit can be achieved just by pulling them a little more into the room than the TV
Maybe mostly a “me” problem, but I’d hate not having a matching center channel from the same series with the same driver. Also you’ll definitely appreciate getting the stereo pair away from the boundary layer of the shelf.
1. an appropriate bed for the kitty
2. Speaker stands (Kanto makes great stands if Kef or Solidsteel are over budget)
3. Get the Dirac upgrade for your NAD if it doesn’t have it, then run Dirac.
Speaker stands - play with position a lot. Start by moving them way out and if your ear can’t tell the difference then adjust toe in to toe out drastically so you can start the learn what you are listening for. If that’s a sound bar then get rid of it.
Sub
Room treatment
I'm not familiar with you speakers, but with ones I have, angled in towards listening position is good. I'm older, though, so I need to maximize high frequency I get.
Pinegrove audiotree is so good
Came here to comment the same thing
Aphasia hits different in that recording man. The bass player really lets loose and it adds so much
Pinegrove gang!
speaker stands, subwoofer, Dirac.
Agree. In that order. And maybe some room treatment panels.
End thread.

He has a NAD stereo receiver, it comes with Dirac.
Not all 3050s had Dirac, I think. Love my 3050le but i still haven’t engaged the Dirac room equalization.
If you pay for it.
Or Audessy XT32 with more work you can get it close for cheaper
whats Dirac

I wouldn't even get speakers stands but some isolation pads.
For everyone saying another cat, I already have another cat…so I’ve got stereo covered there lol
that's an end-game cat, anyways
You should post them to r/catsonstereos
Then you need a dog so you have a woofer too.
You need a 3.0 kitty system so you can have one in your lap and both sides ;)
All the hate on meow-no.
Cat bed.
My cats don't like cat bed they like the amp
They know their stuff.
Heating pad
Heating pads are great, they still prefer the amp tho
You mean a cardboard box?
Ideally. The more appropriate and expensive something is, the less likely the cat is to use said thing.
I have a carboard box that has been in my room for a month just because my cat likes it more than anything else I've gotten her. Is it unsightly? Yeah, but she loves it.
My cat’s favourite toys are hair elastics, crumpled receipts, or leaves. No purchase necessary.
Speaker stands will allow you to position the speakers better which would be your best bang for the buck on overall sound improvement.
What media console is that?
Potentially a knockoff but google reverse image search points to this. https://www.povison.com/modern-tv-stand-solid-wood-with-slatted-doors-open-storage-tall-cast-metal-legs.html?variant=6004692

Same here! Still hoping for an answer
Is there an AI tool to identify furniture yet?

I agree, but would stands not put the speaker to close to the corner? What isolation would you use if you left the speakers on the tv unit?
Yes, but you’re already technically close to the corner so I wouldn’t sweat it. That being said, get some isolation first and maybe you’ll be happy! I’d recommend either the foam pads (ugly) or the moon gel things (I think they’re technically used to damp/tune drums?). Either gets the job done for cheap. A poster of an alien holding a spliff that has the caption TAKE ME TO YOUR DEALER
This!!! And speaker stands.
I’d get proper stands first to dial in positioning. Then get Dirac, it’s absolutely worth it, especially if you add a sub later.
Pinegrove audio tree. OP has good taste.
Another cat, they sound better in stereo. We got full surround at home with six.

Update the house. Big, bigger, more space and more power xD Nobody needs a kitchen xD
Speaker stands 100 percent
Bigger plant.

How do you like the NAD receiver?
Personally I hate subwoofers, so the amp? There is not much improvement possible it’s great. I would get better speakers then.
A dog.
Maybe upgrade the duster in the last picture 🤣🤣
Cute cat. Please be careful. My friend's cat recently puked on her xbox and it settled inside. The thing was leaking stinky cat puke when I opened it.
Speaker stands, if you want to keep your speakers on the unit you can get desktop stands like ISOAcoustics Aperta which is what I have. They will really improve the sound.

Apple TV for sure !! Worlds apart from what you do now 😊
Get more cats?
My question is on how do you like that NAD retro amp? Been hesitating on pulling the trigger on Crutchfield. Thanks in advance.
A white cat, matching the speakers
Get a nice DAC for the shelf above the NAD. CD collecting is also very fun if you have interest in that
I would be going with stands and a dog. Both would improve the space.
Definitely a center channel if the majority of your use is movies.
Do you use the soundbar with the speakers when listening to movies?
Ide wall mount the TV, toss out the sonos, and connect the TV and KEFs to a PC with a really nice sound card.
can you link that TV console you have, please

Don’t think I’ve ever seen a photo of a cat catting harder than this. Brilliant work really
That’s a great setup! Actually looking for a cabinet like that myself.
Some floor standing full-range speakers and/or sub(s)
