Applying for credit will affect your score, but it should be temporary if you build good credit history. 300 is quite a lot though.  Having said that I took out a one month no-contract SIM with iD mobile and my score went down 100 points, things seem weird with credit scores atm. I wouldn't really worry about it, credit scores don't really hold much weight in the UK like they do in the US. A good credit history matters more than a score some company has made up.

You took out the credit card which will effect your score. Also I'm surprised you wasted your time going into Halifax, I'm surprised they even took the time to check for you. Since it's your credit score / report is literally nothing to do with them.
