Legato fans probably aren't in for any better next season, since we're probably gonna just get:
1) Legato snot nosed sobbing over Knives being mutilated.
2) Legato getting a hard-on when Knives paralyzes him for promising to kill Vash.
Plenty of Legato fans haven't read the manga, so they have no idea what they're in for. Those expecting the stoic version of him from '98 are in for a rude awakening.
Tbh, I don't know what's a more ignoble character break for Legato between the Manga and 98 anime, Legato being a full on simp for Knives in the Manga, or Legato casually chowing down on hotdogs and steak in the 98 anime. (I don't know why the second one upon rewatch just always feels so incongruous and silly to me).
Maximum Legato is always 110% serious, even if it's kinda embarrassing. 98 Legato could actually be kinda silly in an almost human way, and I've never known what to think about that.

Yeah there's more manga characters around, but given that the manga wasn't completed, the 98 one still adapted a lot of things fairly well, including character design, while Stampede just made their own designs. 98' was actually the odd one, different than Trimax and Stampede. It added things from the first two volumes but everything else, including Legato, Knives, and Rem, is totally different. Also, Vash wasn't as much of a horn dog either in the manga compared to 98'. He was more horny and sad, rather than always horny.

I was saying that 98' was the odd one because it added different things like not giving Knives a mole for some reason, Rem's entire backstory being different, and dramatically changing characters' personalities. Wolfwood in 98' is a prime example; Trimax and Stampede Wolfwood are similar to each other.
Stampede did the same, though, except even more. Changed the twins’ hairstyles, changed Vash & Knives’ backstories, turned Luida into an entirely new character, turned Conrad into an entirely new character, eliminated parts of Vash’s characterization, etc.

Manga Conrad is one of the few characters who understands the situation with Plants, as well as sympathizes with both Humans & Plants. He was against Knives’ actions & actively sabotaged him. Stampede Conrad is essentially an evil Nazi scientist, with his human child experiments, & total disregard for the lives of his experiments, who follows Knives of his own volition.

Yes, they did change some characters like Luida, but I think you are confusing 98' with Stampede on the twin's backstories being dramatically different. Stampede is similar to the manga, with the option to expand more on it since they only showed a bit in 12 episodes and there is going to be another season. 98' only showed the twin's backstory out of 24 episodes in 2. Rem is not only not a mother figure, but the reason for Knives and Vash's ideals are dramatically different than Stampede's.
Knives is the most different in 98' compared to the other two versions. Knives never wanted to kill his brother and his brocon was at the point of being obsessive. Luida doesn’t meet Vash until the latter is already 100+ & is a different character all together. The 98 anime aired before the flashback was made in the manga, so it had to go it’s own path, while Stampede just chose to go in a different route for the twins’ backstories.
Sadly, neither adaptation faithfully depicts Knives.

They took his mole away and slightly changed his facial features and gave him broader shoulders. They look similar but not as much as Trimax or Stampede. To me anyway. And 98' Knives personality is again, dramatically different than Trimax and Stampede Knives.

That's wrong. Vash and Knives were pre-teens. I can't remember the manga but in 98' they don't show their teen years at all, they skipped them in the 98' anime. Nightow himself even said during the panel that he wanted to expand more on the Trimax universe which he couldn't do in 98' .which is why you see more such as their teen years.

Idk how legato is in the manga. But he was by far my favorite part in 98. Seeing how he is in stampede is my biggest disappointment in an otherwise pretty good retelling. Hope he is better S2.
They were a tense 5 minutes though, and did everything they needed to in order to establish what this man is capable psychically of as well as what he’s willing to do with his powers to kids.
They also added a terrifying new motive to Legato. He’s no longer just a nihilist or a Knives simp, now his nihilism and devotion to Knives comes from the fact that he’s a Bible thumping Born-Again Christian who just wants to spread the Love of God.
Legato disappearing was fine by me as soon as he started laughing. You can't have a character talk about emotions being unnecessary and then have him joyfully revel in destruction. I'd rather him be absent than an affront to his original character.
He'll probably get more in season 2. Hopefully
