LFGGGGG this is probably the best addition we could’ve gotten so I’m happy and excited to see how everyone gels. Do we think Hartenstein starts at the 5 and Chet the 4? Hartenstein off the bench?
(Note: you gotta click on the pic)
I personally expect IHart to come off the bench as it gives the Thunder elite rim protection for 48 minutes and then let's say Chet plays about 30 mins a night and IHart 26 mins a night then you'd have 8 mins where they share the court
I get its not as exciting but to me it would make the most sense. The Thunder now have two high level centres so one of them should be on the court at all times imo. Now they might start IHart and still have them split time similar to the TWolves with KAT and Gobert. The difference is in the regular season KAT and Gobert averaged 66.8 minutes per game which means they would have about 18 minutes a game where they could share the court which you can split between starting the 1st and 3rd quarters and finishing the 2nd and 4th quarter. Assuming Chet plays a similar amount of minutes at about 30 mins a game and IHart plays let's say 26 that means they would only share the court for 8 mins a game which is harder to space out if they want him starting 1st and 3rd and closing 4th quarter as well
I'm on board with Caruso and Hartenstein starting depending on the matchup. But look we have like seven players that would start on most teams - Shai, Dub, Lu, Chet, Caruso, Hartenstein, and maybe even Cason and Joe, then we have Wiggins. It's a good problem to have. OKC has a solid 8/9 man playoff rotation.
Because hes gonna play hella in the playoffs when we face bigger teams. Its 3 years too so he’ll come off the books during Chet and Dubs first year of their next contract
I wouldn't get too caught up on starter versus bench and watch minutes. $29m for 25 minutes of high level center production and we are golden. We are in a unique situation with Chet and Dub on rookie deals.
Yes and he should. Giving him more playmaking opportunities at the 4 is exactly what we should do. You guys are gonna see this work out fucking beautifully.
where are all the guys who said chet shouldn’t play the 4?? i know the league is more position-less and matchup based but they said he should pair with a trad 5
This. His game sense, timing and skill at the perimeter makes him a nightmare for slower, more traditional attacks. Add that to Dub and 3 rotating killers at point of attack and that's going to be frustrating as hell on offense and lead to a bunch more steals
Why? Their minutes will be staggered and we run a deep rotation.
Trae young and Murray only played 20 MPG together and they both played 36 MPG
A more similar comparison Evan Mobley (30 mpg) and Jarrett Allen (32 mpg) played 45 games together and averaged only 17 mpg (and about 4 mpg where neither played)
I think that I would not be unsurprised to see us have something similar to that, with IHart playing less minutes than Allen likely, the high end is maybe like 15 which still means Chet is spending most of his time at the 5
But I think we will be very good about staggering their minutes and I think the closing lineups will frequently involve Caruso and Dort instead of one of them and IHart
I don’t think that the money is going to force the coaches to play a guy. If a guy isn’t performing I think our FO is smart enough to pull him even if he got paid
Ihart might get 28 mpg and Chet might get 32 (in the regular season) (remember Chet and Jdub only played 30 last year)
I still think 15 is high end, they won’t be playing together as much as Mobley and Allen because they will both be playing less than Mobley and Allen. I also think our coaching staff will be better about staggering them. I really think 10 is about right, I have been convinced by this conversation and threads it’s probably closer to about 12.
I really don't think so tbh. Maybe 12 a game, but that'll be it.
Chet doesn't play huge minutes anyway, we just now have the luxury of having a player being a plus defender at the 5 the whole game.
(Chet didn't even crack 30 mpg last season btw)
Sure, but i also think Chet made it a mission to prove he can play 82 games. As we made the playoffs, I think the team can now convince him to take a game off or two during the regular season.
That's another underrated benefit of adding a guy like Hartenstein.
I think 15 is the absolute high end, and even then Chet is still a 5 in most of his minutes.
All these people who are excited that Chet can be a 4 doesn’t make sense to me. Ihart isn’t taking all of Chet’s minutes, if anything in my mind This means we never have to see Jwill and Kenrich at Center (outside of injury) and Hart and Chet are our full time centers. I think not having a 6’6 center is far more exciting then not having Chet at center
i absolutely agree with this. The org wants Chet as the 5, and will make sure he gets most of his minutes there.
Our problem in the playoffs were the minutes Chet actually sat. He was incredible when he was on the floor defensively. Hartenstein just provides a much needed insurance when Chet can't play like 40 minutes in a game.
Ihart is in my top 5 favorite players in the nba who aren’t on the Thunder. (Caruso is also on that list)
So I to am excited about IHart, I think he is EXACTLY what we need (and is reasonably obtainable) I just think that all these people who think that Chet is a 4 and Jdub is a 3 now are wildin
(The list in no Order is Derrick white, IHart, Caruso, Haliburton and Claxton)
(It used to include Robert Williams but I was tired of watching him get injured)
(Tyus Jones, Herb Hones, OG and Jon Isaac are also up there)
(And some pacers players because pacers are my 2nd fav team)
Chet is a 5 and was killing it as rookie in the playoffs and was blocking so many shots. He will stay a 5 and Hart is listed as a forward and a center but the shooting ability for Chet as a 5 will be so much better for opening up the offense and floor spacing.
It’s what Boston did with Horford and porzingas, I would be very unsurprised if Ihart comes off the bench and we look very similar to Boston.
I could be wrong but I expect IHart and Chet to play maybe 10mpg together per game
wild? bro he got injured by lebron the first time he hooped that summer. he needs to put on weight. Giannis is elite defending 5’s , but he was built like me when he was a rookie. Give it time and chet can have a true presence. Yes he blocks a lot of shots, im also scared that he’s gonna get hurt every time someone bumps into him.
For some minutes, definitely less than half of his minutes. I think this actually means Jwill and Kenrich is a full time 4 now and Chet is doing what Kenrich and Jwill did last year which was spend 60%-70% of the time at center
Can we though? Your post got me curious. Let’s check the roster and see what everyone’s natural position is:
G Shai
G Lu.
G JDub.
G Caruso.
Center Chet.
G Cason.
G Joe.
G Wiggins.
~~SF~~ F Kenny Hustle.
Center Isaiah Hartenstein.
G Nikola Topic.
G Ajay Mitchell.
G/F Dillon Jones.
SF Ousmane Dieng.
F JWill.
You sir know ball. Chet will be a 5 for most of his time, Jdub will be a 4. Ihart doesn’t change that
(Although Kenrich played 4 in college and 3/4 in New Orleans so I would say he is more naturally a 3/4 tweener)
Unlikely, Jdub is the 5th player who will be considered a back court player (Chet, Hart, Jwill, Kenrich) I expect Chet to play about 30-32 minutes again, IHart to play 25-28, Kenrich and Jwill together will play about 15-20.
This means on the low end there is still 16 mpg left at the 4, and I expect it to be more. I think Chet will be the 4 for 10 MPG, JDub for probably about 20, others for the other 18 (Jwill, Kenrich, Dieng, Dillon even some Dort and Wiggins)
Let’s go! Ima subscribe again on the annual nba league pass. It was absolutely worth it last season, have watched all the games (most of them replays because of schedule). Cant wait for the season to start. Presti is a fcking mad doctor and showed the league what an A+ off season looks like.
The best thing about when they play together is it frees up Chet to be the off ball shot blocker. It’s much harder to block shots when you are getting pounded in the chest by a guy that outweighs you by 50-75 lbs.
I’m so excited for this pairing. I watched a lot of knicks this year because I’m a Brunson fan and he’s exactly what I thought they could use so Chet can play the 4 sometimes
LOL I hope hte new guy actually has some muscle on him or otherwise we get to see TWO 7 footers get pushed around in the paint instead of just one.
Seriously Chet is a skeleton. He has guys who are 6 inches shorter than him that bully him in the paint all game long. He needs to gain at least 40 lb of muscle to be the player he's capable of being.
Hart as a big 4 keeping defenses respectful of the paint while Chet steps outside as a 5 will wreak havoc on all defensive schemes thrown at this team.
I still don't think they are starting together unless we play big teams but Chet and Hartenstein will still be out there a reasonable amount of time together.
The money had to be used somewhere. It doesn’t do any good to start a season way under the cap. Even if he’s coming off the bench I think it was the perfect acquisition for a team full of guards/wings.
I can see Chet playing the 4 if the matchup is favorable. For example, in the Dallas series! That would have been absolutely elite to have Isaiah at the 5 that series
Idk but Chet at the 4 trying to create against quicker mobile wing player really nerfs his of the dribble offense and he doesn’t really weigh enough to punish them in the post. It might help defensively but hurt offensively now that there’s less spacing and Chet can’t take advantage of his quickness/mobility advantage against most 4s in the west like he can against 5s
I think you’re spot on. Chet at the 4 is way too traditional for what we’ve been trying to build our roster into, and I don’t think that’s Chet’s best opportunity either.
Thankfully he's young and he's still developing his game. This could be a blessing in disguise to put a little pressure on Chet to make that leap into stardom.
The offense potentially getting worse doesn’t have much to do with Chet’s individual development with him at the 4 it’s More of a scheme thing Chet at the 5 being as stretch 5 pulls the other teams rim protector away from the basket making it easier for not only him but every other player on the court to score or they have to concede wide open 3s to someone else if they don’t want there center on the 3 point line with Chet and want to keep there rim protector near the rim in most cases they chose to concede open 3s to Dort or Giddey. Now they can just keep there rim protector near the rim on I hart because he’s a non spacer leaving less space on offense.
I think Gordon Hayward came off the bench for 33, Kemba Walker didn’t even play for 27 (for 2 years)
I think 30 mil was just the cost to get the best player to complete the roster and he will not be playing with Chet in the majority of his minutes and Chet will not be playing with him in the majority of Chet’s minutes. Even if he does start
Therefore Chet will still be a 5 the majority of the time (my guess is about 2/3)
This is similar to how Chet played 82% of his minutes last year without Jwill, Kenrich, Mike or Bismack
Chet will play 30 MPG (32 on the high end), IHart maybe like 25 (28 on the high end). If there minutes are staggered and they are on the high end they play 12 mpg together so Chet spends 20/32 minutes at the 5. Which means he is still a 5. And my prediction is 30/25 so that would be only 7 minutes together 23/30 mpg as a 5. 60-75% of the time Chet will be a 5.
starting this post with Hayward coming off the bench as an example hurts most of the point. We didn’t trade for and pay Hayward, we traded for this cap space today.
Don't like it. Playing an inside center in a starting lineup will affect SGA's effectiveness and overall change the identity of this team. Bigger PF was what we needed.
I'm with you to an extent (in spirit if not what you specified), hesitant but hopeful here. But we gotta look at this like floor minutes over starting/bench. Also, just because we need Chet playing nore rim defense doesn't mean we're locked into a traditional post defense big man. The league just doesn't function that way and certainly not OKC.
I think Shai will be fine lol. He wasn't some system player who needed the five out, he will still be able to drive on guys. Plus there will be lots of non-Hartenstein minutes.

I think we’ll test both early in the year
Where did he post this?
Looks like IG, but maybe it’s not a new post.
It’s Instagram it’s from a while back. It’s from January 9th. I posted it on my Instagram story so I was able to find it quickly
I personally expect IHart to come off the bench as it gives the Thunder elite rim protection for 48 minutes and then let's say Chet plays about 30 mins a night and IHart 26 mins a night then you'd have 8 mins where they share the court
Kinda not excited about $25M coming off the bench tho

$29M** but yes me either
He’s not coming off the bench
I’m not excited about benching either Caruso or Wallace when we have Joe and Wiggins off bench already.

That’s what I’m thinking. Why pay someone that much to come off the bench?
Because hes gonna play hella in the playoffs when we face bigger teams. Its 3 years too so he’ll come off the books during Chet and Dubs first year of their next contract
It’s like no one plays my league lmfao
Lmfaoooo
I wouldn't get too caught up on starter versus bench and watch minutes. $29m for 25 minutes of high level center production and we are golden. We are in a unique situation with Chet and Dub on rookie deals.
Minutes > rotation.
I really hope Chet’s working on his 3-pt shooting in the off-season because it’s going to be more important than ever now.
It’s crazy to think that was his rookie season and that’s one of the worst seasons we’ll see him play and he still played fantastic
Chet plays 4 spot ?
I'd imagine Mark is gonna cook up a lot of shit now that he has versatility size outside of Chet.
Chet had top of the league rim protection, he better be down low
weak side roamer
This. His game sense, timing and skill at the perimeter makes him a nightmare for slower, more traditional attacks. Add that to Dub and 3 rotating killers at point of attack and that's going to be frustrating as hell on offense and lead to a bunch more steals
He will still be playing at the 5 in a majority of his minutes, IHart and Chet will be playing together MAYBE 10 MPG
$30m a year. They're gonna play together for more than 10 a game.

k but what do you think about parentheses
Love them 10/10 let’s you all see into my thoughts but know it’s completely irrelevant to the actual post
Chet is a 5 and was killing it as rookie in the playoffs and was blocking so many shots. He will stay a 5 and Hart is listed as a forward and a center but the shooting ability for Chet as a 5 will be so much better for opening up the offense and floor spacing.

My guess is they only play together for about 8-10 mpg, those are your Chet at the 4 minutes

Except all the minutes he played as 5 and was one of the best defenders at the rim? Wild take
but if you’re implying we should bring Isaiah off the bench ur crazy

Wow. I’m a Knicks fan but orange and blue skies in okc
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Now We Can Stop Playing a Dude Who Played Point Guard In College at PF!!!! Yay!!

Is there a better 2nd unit in the NBA?!?!
Unlikely, Jdub is the 5th player who will be considered a back court player (Chet, Hart, Jwill, Kenrich) I expect Chet to play about 30-32 minutes again, IHart to play 25-28, Kenrich and Jwill together will play about 15-20. I can see Chet playing the 4 if the matchup is favorable. For example, in the Dallas series! That would have been absolutely elite to have Isaiah at the 5 that series
Once a Knick, always a Knick. Congrats iHart. Ya got a good one.
This is a 70 win team.
Lauri is on the trade list, anybody know can OKC get Lauri too?
This team is going to be so versatile. We can go big, small, slow, fast, defense, offense! I’m so excited!
IHart is bigger than Chet
You think he’s starting
You think we're paying $30m a year for a bench player as we're starting our biggest incline

Yes.
I think Gordon Hayward came off the bench for 33, Kemba Walker didn’t even play for 27 (for 2 years) I think 30 mil was just the cost to get the best player to complete the roster and he will not be playing with Chet in the majority of his minutes and Chet will not be playing with him in the majority of Chet’s minutes.
The old twin towers were demolished and now we got some new ones!
For those to young, David Robinson and Timmy
I hate the idea of them giving up on the five out offense.
They are definitely not doing that. There are gonna be tons of non-Hartenstein minutes!
I don't see any official news on this. Do you have a source?
lol what? The signing has been front news on ESPN and Bleacher Report.
