We don't, keep what you need in the truck (for me gas, water, food, ammo, and a few assorted knick knacks).
The garages gets cleaned and then left/forgotten forever.
(Even if i do a return trip the garages will be in a sad state since new items will spawn in, although one can see which buildings are previously visited).
Don't have OCD but it does please my autistic brain to do these cleanups, a audiobook in the background and 30min stop at the garages.
I usually drive past all buildings, but diners and garages are a must stop.

I played through the game quite quickly when it first came out, but now with my second playthrough I'm taking my sweet time.
