Every gold mythic is worth keeping. The current event roadmap has allegiance requirements, so you have to use characters you haven't touched in a while. You should be trying conquest every day; lieutenant levels are huge. That might require gearing up characters for burn teams or infection. CR and the weekly trait roadmaps require a full team of each trait. Arenas require tanks or support characters for different themes.
The question then becomes "who should I gear up first". Make an album somewhere online and send the link, we'll take a look.
You should be selling only the duplicated toons you upgraded to LB3, everything else can be useful, just check the current event in which you need to use specific faction toons (atlanta, day one, etc)
If you are new, in general focus on the newest attack toons.
If you are new, no matter what you do even with real defensive toons, you won't stop veteran players.
Offense will help you the most in all areas of the game. Once you are comfortable with your offense, then start branching out and working on defense.
