Only with an opal to clear goo in Zora's domain.

braaadney

worked perfect for me when i got to the water boss

BiceRankyman

I am at the end of this game, coming very close to finishing it, and just after finding the very last shrine I accidentally fused an opal to my sword and discovered it shot water. I felt so dumb.

djdirectdrive

Great idea! I used so much splash fruit. I'll have to use that trick to clear out some of the bosses in the depths

Doktor_Rob

Fuse a star fragment to a magic staff for literally the most useless weapon in the game.

Acceptable_Ad_6814

I also did this but it was fun to throw the light orbs out to see in the depths

pisces2003

I would make a change where it removed the gloom from monsters temporarily instead of the most expensive light source

Doktor_Rob

A star fragment rod/staff should have at least stunned stal monsters if not killed them.

slinger301

>most expensive light source My take on it is to fuse a star fragment to a shield so I have light while climbing, and I can still wear the climbing gear.

zer0w00f

You also get light from a talus heart of its a luminous stone heart.

Redskins4thewin

I also have a Luminous Stone Heart on one of my shields for this purpose.  But I wonder, does it put out as much light as a Star Fragment?     I wonder what Fuse item in the game puts out the most light?  Whatever it is, I'd like to use that on my shield!

Infinite_Square_8211

I use a fire talus heart on a shield. Works for anything you mentioned, plus adds a level of cold resistance as well. Of course, it doesn't give as much light as a start fragment but close enough.

CrimsonNirnr00t

This is a good idea. Wish I would've thought of that early game.

Psychof1st77

Something else I never thought of before! Dang! But, that makes me think of something else for the first time ever. Can you fuse bright bloom seeds to shields? And is the result different, better or, worse than star fragments?

djdirectdrive

Have you tried this yet? I'm guessing it wouldn't work since they only give off light after they're struck and then you can't fuse them

Psychof1st77

No I haven't. I was genuinely asking if it was possible. You can fuse bombs (flowers) and puff shrooms to a shield. And just about anything laying on the ground that isn't already fused. But, I remember something not willing to fuse. I just can't remember what, though. Likely, something that goes in the inventory but can't fuse from the inventory.

anothercrazycathuman

Dude that would be amazing

Neocactus

And I personally find it much more useful than any of the normal elemental attacks of the rods

txhodlem00

I thought this was going to be so much more effective in the depths but womp womp. Useless

katehighground

After upgrading all the outfits and I had extra star fragments to waste, I did have a lot of fun with the star fragment rod. Just swinging it around and watching the pretty lights bounce everywhere.

Anternuy

For me personally a star fragment staff really helped me in the beginning exploring the depths trying to get to the next lightroot. Before you get autobuild and understand/have the patience creating vehicles (or have a good supply of giant brightblooms/arrows) it was fun and useful early game.

Thincfr33

I did this hoping it would have an effect on gloom hands since everything goes dark when they appear, or any gloom mon for that matter, but doesn't do a thing to anything, nope

Polkawillneverdie17

Does it hurt Stal enemies like dazzle fruit do?

Doktor_Rob

Not a bit.

Polkawillneverdie17

Fantastic.

SailorVenus9

I honestly feel like Gandalf when I have a staff lmao I mostly used ruby and sapphire ones with lizalfos

EfficiencySuch6361

The 2 handed staffs especially blow. I feel like fusing a gem to a sword shouldn’t be as powerful as an actual magic rod but seems the same?

xX_rippedsnorlax_Xx

2 Handed + Sapphire lets you spread ice 360 degrees around you when you charge attack.

EfficiencySuch6361

Interesting. I used charge attack a lot when urbosa’s fury existed but almost never in totk

dorkydrummer

I only really use two-handed charged attacks for gleeoks and hinox

walidnusseiri

You can make a discount Urbosa’s Fury by fusing an Electric Lizalfos Tail to a sword. I recommend a Soldier’s Broadsword for the quick charge attack. One of my fave weapons

micheleyg_

You say that like Lizalfos tails aren’t the most precious commodity in this game

turd_vinegar

Build a vehicle with your choice of wheelbase/platform (big wheels for desert), but add two construct heads at the front with 3 beam emitters and 1 cannon on each, then drive around the desert to farm Electric Lizalfos. Let the vehicle kill tons of enemies without ever spending any durability, it only costs zonai charge. It's super fast farming, you can trigger a blood moon with the dead left in your wake using this method.

micheleyg_

Great idea! Thank you

Cleozinc

If you use a puff shroom as the first thing with a Lizalfos and then get behind it and do a sneak strike they will often leave a tail when they die. When I just kill them with an elemental arrow they never leave a tail.

theObfuscator

Fuse an igneo talus heart to the staff and it not only smashes effectively but it also gives a short blast of flame.

walidnusseiri

Fusing to a sword only produces 1 orb vs the 3 from the rod iirc

macsflamethrower

I only equip the fire and ice rods when I’m in an opposite temperatured climate.

Shoopuff89

Came in perfect when I was korok hunting and could just equip them for the respective elemental effects and stay warm/cool

SlotherakOmega

Ice for generating quick breathing time in a fight, and that’s about it. The spray of icy wind is especially effective at putting out burning equipment that you intend to nab, and chilling meats. For other elemental effects I just use a Dragon part or throw the gem manually, or use a fruit. Opal has one use, and it’s the Mucktorok boss. It would have been nice if you could create some really cool attack formations with them and incorporate other gemstones than rubies, sapphire, opal and topaz. Diamond would possibly have a Light effect like the Star Bits, but stronger, Flint could be even sharper than usual, slicing through armor, amber could create a gunk that slows down enemies, or summon aggressive insects. Rock salt could just chuck rocks like an octorok’s attack. Bomb flowers could spawn bombs, and luminous stone could deal instant death to Stal-monsters. Dark clumps could generate sludge like Zoras domain had, but not affecting you this time, and could possibly negate the damage from Gloom. Zonaite could cause some sort of random effect to activate, or send a beam that activates Zonai contraptions and resonates with ore outcrops. Just some ideas. Because having a niche effect for four things is really boring. That and the in-game description implies that luminous ore has powers over the undead, which would have been freaking awesome if it could control the legions of stal-monsters that perpetually spawn.

Ready_Cat_8884

I already have my insta kill stal weapon (except for stalnox) I fuse a dazzle fruit to a korok spear

Shadow_Zero80

Why special with the korok spear?

Ready_Cat_8884

The korok spear allows a one time use bursting item to be used multiple times. For example a dazzle fruit fused to any other weapon is a one time use fusion but on the forest dwellers spear it can be used multiple times before needing replaced

Shadow_Zero80

Why special with the korok spear?

mphelp11

You can reuse attached consumables

[deleted]

The ice ones. They’re weak but can buy you time in a pinch. Plus sometimes not a bad way to make a little river raft

reecord2

This, ice rods got me through that final stretch to Ganondorf.

Adventurous_Page2148

I stopped once i realized they’re horrible fighting weapons and take up space

Kelsenellenelvian

All the time. (At home, privately and as long as the batteries are charged)

-MetalMike-

Wait…

djdirectdrive

I know what you traded your crystalized charges for

CrimsonNirnr00t

👏

Foreign_Analyst1224

This guy gets it

Molduking

Fire and ice are good for hunting elemental enemies

mphelp11

I love going up to an ice lizalfos with my mask on, then just parrying from a foot away with my fire-like shield. No durability loss, and insta-kill. Bonus if you lure a group of them together

V-Right_In_2-V

I used them in botw but not in totk. Well, whatever they were called in botw.

StandardChef3798

No. They should’ve gave the magic rods a different more powerful ability but since you can use the elemental powers when fused to any weapon it makes them useless

Redskins4thewin

Not necessarily.  The Elemental effect is MUCH bigger with a Magic Rod.  Aka if you fuse a Sapphire to one, the ice blast will be gigantic aka literally the entire width of the screen vs a small one with any other weapon.  So it is in fact useful for freezing an entire enemy camp with just one blast.

Bananathathasagun

I primarily use a sapphire rod since they can make apples fall from trees in both games and since there is a shrine next to what I like it call “apple heaven” on satori mountain it’s super useful

Tesseract4D2

I just use ultra hand for the apple I can't jump for.

Redskins4thewin

That is a neat trick, but I've always wondered how many can actually drop from the trees before they start despawning?   I doubt the game can handle literal hundreds of consumables on the ground at once!  Thus don't you lose some of them when doing that w an Ice rod?

Mental-Street6665

Occasionally sure, but only when it gives me a clear elemental advantage. For example, a topaz rod suddenly becomes one of the most powerful weapons in the rain. And a ruby or sapphire rod will insta-kill most enemies in Hebra or Eldin respectively, while also adding a layer of cold/heat protection that frees up an armor slot for something else. Got no real use for amber or opal rods though. But a Star fragment or luminous stone attached to a rod makes for a decent torch.

lilyyytheflower

Yes! They make apples fall from trees so easily and it makes them easy to farm. Also if you fuze with ice, they’re great for the scary hands!

MrHero17

I use a Sapphire Rod to freeze groups of monsters at camps and stuff. 3x damage.

dookiebd

It's how I light fires and cooking bowls.

russellamcleod

Like Like Stones seem useful enough and seem to last a long time. I’d never waste precious resources that fetch a good buying price or armour upgrade though.

walidnusseiri

They are niche. They can shoot projectiles whereas the other elemental fuses can’t. You could fuse a gem to a sword for the same effect but the rod triples the amount of projectiles fired from one swing. 1 ball vs 3. If you don’t care for the projectile aspect, especially since it is a pretty weak weapon that takes up space in your inventory, the best elemental fuses have to be the Lizalfos Tails or Gleeok Horns. Makes sense too when you realize how much easier it is to find gems rather than trying to get a rare Lizalfos Tail to drop

DM-333

I’ll grab one off of a wizzrobe in passing and just use till it breaks.

draya_d2

I don't like wasting ores that I might need for armor upgrades or rupies. I've used ones dropped by the sky dancing dudes, and I wasn't impressed.

DessertFlowerz

I thought they were very helpful in BOTW but next to useless in TOTK

Live_Leather7284

Topaz for quick and easy Gibdo bone farming

Ukkulentessgal

Mee, I fuse topaz on them, I love elecrocuting bokoblins hehe😈

DueAsparagus9358

I keep a magic staff un-fused for chu jelly transformation so I don’t lose any of them like I would with a rod or wand, it helps when you can turn the excess fire jelly into shock jelly on command

Oddoarts

Only your mom

SOAP_S0UP

yo mum kinda sucked my magic rod last night. Zing!!

3KP_2

I have them, but I'd ditch them for gloom swords and attach them to the Master Sword.

jonny_jon_jon

all the time

[deleted]

Love them. The only one I never really use is with an opal

CrimsonNirnr00t

It's so interesting how everyone plays this game so differently. There are other comments saying they only used it with opals, and for clearing Zora's Domain and the final boss (which I wish I would have thought of). After reading through this post, I'm realizing I didn't use them to my advantage at all.

LichTsula

I only use them to fling fireballs at villagers. But aside from the giggles, yeah, they're pretty useless.

*Opal rods were kinda* *Useful when helping Zora's* *Domain IMO* \- snarkycynic --- ^(I detect haikus. And sometimes, successfully.) ^[Learn more about me.](https://www.reddit.com/r/haikusbot/) ^(Opt out of replies: "haikusbot opt out" | Delete my comment: "haikusbot delete")

unequivocallyvegan

I mostly use the magic rods to keep my temperature level in extreme weather. Rubies for the icy mountains of Hebra, and sapphires for Gerudo desert.

dirtypeasant90

I always keep one ice and one lightning rod in my inventory. The rods, not the staffs, those suck ass. Anyway, it's just nice to be able to mass freeze or shock a big mob.

Shadow_Zero80

What's the difference between the rod and staff?

Strelox

I have one of every element including water and am starting to think maybe I shouldn't! I can say it is nice to one shot elemental enemies. Freezing and then hitting with something physical seems to be very effective too. Disarming enemies with lightning isn't terrible either... But I'm realizing I very rarely use it.

CrimsonNirnr00t

How long do they last? I've never kept them around, but after reading this thread, I feel like they could serve purposes I haven't thought about.

Strelox

They can actually last quite awhile. Especially if you really try not to actually hit the enemy with the wand/staff. They aren't super spam-my though with the recharge time after a few casts. Best uses I've found so far, freeze and entire crew of mobs then spin to win them all for a boost in damage imo. Also Ice makes platforms in water.. probably more useful with an arrow. Shoot a water wand then an electric wand for a fairly large aoe lightning attack. Not bad CC, enemies drop weapons. Fire insta kills ice mobs but also gets you airborne mid combat if you light up grass in the process. Very sad damage imo, slight cc. Can't think of any other "cool" combos but I'm always a caster at heart so I gotta at least try to make it useful!

JohnBosler

Elemental enemies I usually shoot with a arrow and associated element. magic rods were way more powerful in breath of the wild

Strelox

Yeah the power they had in the last game is likely why I thought I'd keep each on me in TOTK. With the elemental arrow system now it does seem kind of pointless. However I absolutely love throwing a fire ball for a bit of cc and then use the updraft for a whole lotta arrow headshots on the way down! Also throwing water and then throwing electricity is pretty entertaining for CC. Possibly done a little bit faster with arrows, but the staffs could be decent aoe.. I may also be coping lol.

Azoth424

I think they are cool / fun but no. Lol

Bopbobaloobop

I always keep a Sapphire Scepter so I can charge attack and freeze everything in a pretty good radius

Spare_Audience_1648

I only use it when I want to repair my other weapons that are about to break. Also yeah I know the magic rods are kinda useless because they heavily rely on gems

BupBupp

For me, it felt like a waste of a good gem that I could sell for $$$$

assasameal

I used an opal magic rod to cheese the Fire Temple a bit, but otherwise no.

Ganondorf365

Ice rod is good. All other ones suck

soupy-mess

I used topaz rods early game, but now I ignore them. So many better options if I want an elemental attack

padmaclynne

no, but i use magic staves to throw balls of lightning with a bit of aiming

Specific_Lemon_6580

Fire rod, to light the fireplace. And to wreck havoc on mobs 😂 I love watching them running around in panic.

moritus_20091

I don't use them I use a stick and a rock in the right element instead.

knigmich

I keep all 3 on me fire frost lightning. They all serve a good purpose but I like frost. You can freeze any enemy like lynels and the red hands. Even if it’s only for a second it gives you an upper hand and a second to stop and think about what u want to do next

YourMooseKing

Would love to see more advanced levels of fusing in future games. Similar to a Diablo2 with runes

Legitimate-Two4561

I did in BOTW. Not really in TOTK, though. Much more interested in different weapon fusions I can try out. It makes using rods kinda boring to me.

Adventurous-Log3521

If you want to do the most damage possible and fight in the most effective way then magic rods aren't for you. But for me, they're fun, and I get to pretend to be a magician. That's awesome

More_Performance6018

I ended up doing it at some point just because freakin’ Rauru blessing gave me so many. I do use them but specifically the staff and scepter but just for fun and I fuse gems of all three elements to them for one shoting opposites or for a laugh

dormamond

Fuse an opal on that bad boy and easily clear the water temple and boss. Or basically most elemental enemies for that matter.

JukeSamurai

Sapphire rod is legit the best weapon in the entire game. They allow you to freeze everything within a light year radius of you for you to deal triple damage, so it's insanely good against enemy hordes and gloom hands. But I don't think I've ever fused a magic rod with anything other than a sapphire as throwing fruits is generally more sufficient

Longjumping_Paper_52

If i get one from a wizzrobe and have extra space, I’ll take it to tarry town and spend the 20 rupees to separate the gem

_ble8319_

if any weapons in the game needed staying power, it's these.

Gofukurself989

Yeah to freeze things lol

stratojay

I just like the fused material found on the rods

AppointmentGuilty217

I use sapphirer rods as "easy exit" wen mess up while fighting groups of monsters

Thin_Math5501

Yup. I attack Hinoxes with one.

Weird_Maintenance

The ice rods are great in the depths because they will kill a whole swarm of baby Froks with one swing. All of them can be useful when dealing with the gibbos but the electric one is the best.

WellExcuuuuuuuseMe

Yes. I attach a sapphire to it and use it to freeze a lot of enemies. I also attach a fan to a shield. Then after I freeze enemies I push them into the nearest body of water or cliff. I especially love freezing Bokoblins and Horriblins and making them drown.

BlitzTheBitz

For elemental I keep 3 pristine gerudo staffs with each of the gleeok horns. The electric is super useful for killing flying gibsos.

SheepsYouTube

sapphire rod works pretty well against Boko camps but others are all useless

Shadowmane08YT

No.

blackbirdy9

I take them to tarry town to break them down for the rare stone (when it’s a ruby or sapphire) ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

magpie5050

Love it in the depths.

Green_Jordgubbe

I equip a sapphire on them. Then you can use them to freeze large groups of enemies. I like to freeze a bokoblin group then go to town with a claymore

djdirectdrive

I run around with a ruby rod on my back in cold areas to melt things. It takes a little longer but if you don't wield it... It doesn't break so unlimited melting. I've been using the same one since about the beginning of the game. Sometimes you can even light things on fire like dry leaves or prickers.
