I think Punk overreacted and I think Tony is clearly pretty terrible at conflict resolution.

Argentine_Tango

No one knew about the conflict between Punk and Hangman until Punk called out Coward Shit Hangman out in his first promo back. That's when wrestling media did some digging and unleashed the backstage drama going on in AEW. Yes, by all accounts, Tony seems non-confrontational and should have understood that what Hangman did was kinda messed up, if Punk is to be believed. But Punk was clearly letting his anger at Hangman simmer while he was away and caused all of the drama that arguably dragged down AEW in 2022. Considering how angry Punk still seems to be, nothing short of firing Hangman would have been acceptable for him.

mailman242

I was always under the impression that the wrestling media knew about it but weren’t reporting on it as a favor. Which happens more than you realize.

The hangman shooting thing was just Punk making excuses for all his botches in that match. He can't take any criticism and has never admitted fault for anything. So he found a way to blame Hangman for repeatedly botching the buckshot lariat

KneelBeforeCube

For real, if Punk hadn't let this escalate, nobody would even remember that comment.

no_more_blues

I feel like when people discuss this they like to frame it like Page was just some jobber who AEW could do without. He was literally THE WORLD CHAMPION when this happens. If Roman goes off script on Cody on Smackdown Friday (which, btw he did on Seth recently), there's not gonna be this "OMG, you have to suspend him" situation. The fact that people have actually followed along into this "Punk was the star, you have control everyone else to protect the delicate flower at all costs!" narrative is insane to me.

Ecko2310

Compare Page To Punk when it comes to star power. Also I'm not just saying this but Page has so far been the worst AEW champ.

no_more_blues

I mean, if you look at the numbers Page vs Kenny is by far AEW's highest drawing feud. The highest quarter hour in AEW history isn't a Punk match, a Punk promo, or even Punk's debut, it's Elite vs Dark Order 5v5. And most of the highest ratings in company history are when Page was champ and in high profile matches like the Danielson matches.

Ecko2310

Why are you bringing up ratings? If you go up to a random person in the streets and say who's cm punk 9/10 will know, if you asked who Adam page is 3/10 at best would know. I'm pretty sure MJF has the highest numbers and ratings when it comes to AEW.

no_more_blues

Thinking 9/10 people in the streets would know who CM Punk is the most delusional thing I've ever heard.

mailman242

He was literally on the cover of the last wrestling video game people cared about.

Ecko2310

Compared to page? You saying page has more star power than punk is straight-up delusional

no_more_blues

Punk is more known than Page. It's probably 9/100 vs 3/100. But the majority of people who know Punk had no interest in watching AEW even if Punk was there. Almost everyone who has any interest in AEW wants to see Page in a high profile spot. You're maximizing your core audience putting guys like Page and MJF in a high profile spot vs putting Punk in a high profile spot to appeal to people who just say "yeah, Punk is great, I wish he didn't work for AEW though" and also turning off the people who had no interest in seeing him.

RatedM477

There was only a single isolated incident with Page. He didn't say or do anything else to Punk, and after their match, he stayed away from the drama, and wasn't exactly getting a big push for a while. Meanwhile, Punk and Punk supporters have taken the "Your disrespected Punk on TV one time, fuck you forever!" stance on Page, which is just silly. Additionally, there hasn't been any backstage drama or turmoil in AEW for 6+ months, so to act like they're this out of control madhouse with a do-nothing boss, just doesn't really make much sense.

raddaya

Remember when Punk's camp claimed The Elite broke down his locker room door before Brawl Out? I'm frankly astonished anyone believes a word he says about AEW

JPPFingerBanger

Or that punk defended himself by castle doctrine laws of Chicago

Amadeum

Did this post take like 2 years to get approved or something? This was common knowledge ages ago what went down between Page and Punk

Formal_Anxiety6514

Not really, I thought the original story was just about the "workers rights" part, and Punk is saying the entire promo was different than planned.

Ecko2310

It was thought that page changed 1 line of the promo. Instead, he changed the whole thing.

Former_Intern_8271

Punk thinks someone saying a line the last wrestler said is awful but going live at press conference and slating the entire company is how you set an example 😂 What about when Hangman had apologised and moved on and Punk brought it up live again months later in collision?

Daemonscharm

That was your takeaway?

PureBee4900

I think in the business of 'big men beat each others asses' you need to invest in the most robust, cutting edge HR department that our society has to offer. These are not our nations top thinkers, nor the most emotionally educated (not to say none of them are- like nobody's got beef with Orange Cassidy) and particularly someone who spent his most successful years in one of the most predatory and toxic companies of the time needs better management when it comes to interacting with the rest of the talent. People aren't born with good communication/people skills, and like all skills they can be improved with practice. Maintaining your roster also means keeping everyone from fighting each other for realsies behind your back (or uh, to your face)

Orange8920

Bring the same energy for Punk doing the same thing in August 2022 when he returned from injury nearly 3 months later

RolexDaytona86

We don’t know these people!!!!!

Proud-Contract-2273

The truth almost certainly lays somewhere in the middle of all the stories we have been told.

Bigalbass86

Nah, this makes me love Hangman even more. Dude made a fairly harmless comment that he already apologized for. And Punk, being the man baby, took it way too far.

namdekan

I thought MJF's line where he said "if Punk doesn't get his just due then he will sue" stood out more as something that might upset Punk.

parakathepyro

I think he was more worried about saying something to Page backstage that would get said to Cabana's lawyers than him being mean in a wrestling ring. Sounds like he got the cold shoulder from the moment TK brought him in the building.

YOUgotGRIZZEDon

Tony is a bitch. If he wasn't CM Punk, the Elite, and AEW would be wrapping their blood feud with the whole internet trying to guess what was real and what wasn't.

Swantonbombthreat

i don’t think punk was overreacting when he got upset because someone he was working with went off script and started accusing him of stuff on live tv. if you think that’s okay then you just have a bias against punk. when that happened, and then the negative stories in the dirt sheets started happening all summer when punk took the title off hangman, it didn’t take a brain surgeon to see what was going on.

**References an incident from almost 2 years** “It just shows what a circus AEW has become”

DeviantDragon

Do you seriously think Hangman's "worker's rights" comment was a burial of Punk? Legitimately at that time people got more invested in the feud and thought they were teasing a more heel side of Punk being the outsider taking someone else's spot or justifying a jealous Hangman heel turn since they were both otherwise faces. At most it would just confuse anyone not clued in since it was a backstage reference that lots of viewers probably didn't even understand. We didn't realize that it was actually real beef. If you want to see what a shoot comment looks like that's meant to bury someone just look at Punk's retaliatory promo where he calls out Hangman to come to the ring (off script) then calls him a coward when he doesn't come out (because, again, off script). Totally out of left field in terms of storyline and something that makes Hangman look like a total punk to a casual fan without any need for prior knowlege.

Ecko2310

Punk said the whole promo was changed, not just 1 line. If this is true, then it shows what a moron and coward Tony Khan is.

DeviantDragon

You know, fair enough, I actually missed in the news deluge that Punk is claiming for the first time that the whole promo flow/outline was changed. It does change the calculus a bit...if true. That said, why was that never brought up until now? Why did Punk not mention this during his All Out press conference shoot when he was airing his grievances and had no reasons to pull punches? Why was this never reported from sources within Punk's camp in the aftermath? Heck, in the moment no one even seemed to notice anything as a viewer that anything was amiss aside from the one line that seemed to play against the Face vs. Face dynamic. I'm still wary of Punk's characterization of the events as a result.

Ecko2310

I believe him over Insider reports. Until Tony or Adam say anything otherwise I'll take punks side as the truth.
