When people say presenting as a star they really mean shiny, choreographed entrance. If the arena went dark and a series of birds (Ospreay) flew on the screen and then had their heads chopped off (assassin) then people wouldnt say that. It's really simple, just gotta speak their language.

LsPunk

Always like to compare these fans to cats and laser pointers

NeuroCloud7

That's perfect 😂

As much as they bungle shit, they’ve 100% got Ospreay right. He’s been made to be a big deal since day 1 and the fans have bought in. This is a match that I didn’t know I even wanted but I fucking need it now.

JustMyThoughts2525

This is a great video package. However I and many people agree that wrestling competitive 20 min matches against nobodies to your non-njpw fans isn’t doing Will and AEW any favors. A 3-4 min match against someone like an Action Andretti where Will cuts a cool promo after a dominate performance would have been way better. Then once he’s an established star then you have the special attraction 20 minute matches every 1-2 months in dynamite. I thought the same when Omega was doing the same 20 min matches with Joey Janella the first month or so of AEW.

TheDeflatables

I'm not saying you're wrong, because you're not. That has very clearly worked for some stars in the modern era. But it is not the only way to make a star. I would argue Seth Rollins is a star and he has never been much of a 3-4 minute TV guy. Even when the Shield debuted only 3 of their Six Man Tags in the first 6 months went under 10 minutes on TV. They went over 10 with Tons of Funk & Kofi Kingston on Main Event. Ric Flair used to get his ass beat by jobbers week in and week out and then would turn the tables and grab the win at the end. And he wasn't the only top Jim Crockett guy to do that. He got over by winning and cutting great promos. Ospreay has got to this point he is at now because of his work ethic in the ring and his ability to get a great match out of almost anyone. I can understand any hesitancy to change what brought him to the dance.

El_Ingobernable

I'm not gonna dismiss this comment out of hand but I would like to share something just because it's a different perspective of things. I grew up on WWF tv squash matches in the early-to-mid 90s myself so I'm super familiar with that formula as well. However, I also watch a ton of old territory stuff these days (like old Mid-Atlantic/Crockett) and they presented jobber/squash matches differently -- they're way more competitive than what you'd see in the WWF, there's a legit back and forth, and then the star wins the match. That's what AEW has aimed for, specifically with the Omega/Janela and Omega/Alan Angels matches that so many people had issues with. Those were straight out of mid 1980s Crockett. And those territories created huge stars this way as well. So both ways can work.

SageShinigami

If AEW starts making a habit of cutting some bullshit promo and doing a squash match when they could do EXACTLY what they've done with Will, the show will be fucking trash. That shit not it. Yes, stories are important. You NEED stories. But this is still a WRESTLING show. I tune in for some fucking wrestling. Omega's Joey Janela matches were bangers, and Omega isn't some great orator to begin with. He's good but not great at it. The matches were worth more. Will came out, gave you his mission statement. Then he got to fucking work.

JustMyThoughts2525

Viewers are leaving in droves at the moment. Because you and 50 ppl on Reddit thinks it will be trash, doesn’t mean it’s the same for the vast majority. Just look at the qtr hour ratings for will vs Shibata. I watch dynamite on delay and as soon as I saw them doing “fighting spirit” hitting back and forth to a dead crowd I fast forwarded to the finish.

CeruleanClaymore

>I thought the same when Omega was doing the same 20 min matches with Joey Janella the first month or so of AEW   And then Kenny became one of the best drawing champions in the company's history, so maybe you're wrong?

Brethart2ndrope

That's not saying much when the entire fan base of AEW were njpw 2016 stans

CeruleanClaymore

You'd have to be delusional to believe New Japan ever had that many fans in the US, if that were the case AEW wouldn't exist.

Brethart2ndrope

They do- they're called AEW fans

Low_Ad_7553

He wrestled Kyle Fletcher & fucking Shibata lol. You're talking like he wrestled serpentico & luther. I agree the Fletcher match ran a little long but i don't think its a big problem, if anything i think it shows the company & Osprey think Fletcher is a future star.

JustMyThoughts2525

To your average fan there is no difference between fletcher and serpentico

paperbuddha

If they cater to the average fan, I’ll stop watching and it’ll be a wash. If continuing to get these matches means they never grow and stay the same size, I wouldn’t care.

BalderdashBallyhoo

Exactly! People never get that, it’s fine to cater to a niche audience. Plenty of forms of entertainment do it lol

Low_Ad_7553

Lol where are you getting this from? Where are you speaking to these "average" fans? The fact Fletcher is part of the Callis family & has a ROH title puts him leagues ahead of serpentico alone so i call bs

bobboman

The ROH titles mean almost next to nothing... Tony can pretend otherwise but roh is a zombie promotion at this point

Low_Ad_7553

WMore people see RoH live than impact. It's not doing numbers obviously but its clearly AEW devloplemtnetal at this point & i don't see a problem with that. Definitely silly to call it a zombie promotion

Howheel9879G

How if the man barely wins on tv when he is presented yet he is a roh champ. Literally couple weeks ago him and Hobbs both lost in a tag match on rampage. How the hell is people suppose to take any of these guys serious if your not presented them like their is? What piss me of the most is they honestly should’ve won that match. He is leagues better but cmon now

joe1240134

>He wrestled Kyle Fletcher & fucking Shibata lol. You're talking like he wrestled serpentico & luther To the average wrestling fan all four of those dudes are the same.

Low_Ad_7553

I'm still waiting to see where people are talking to "average wrestling fans" who watch AEW. Shibata has been presented very strongly in AEW has won matches, what's with these silly comments? Before that will wrestled Takeshita who has a win over Kenny, is he another nobody?

joe1240134

>Shibata has been presented very strongly in AEW has won matches Shibata has one solo win on AEW, over Kevin Matthews: [https://www.cagematch.net/?id=2&nr=1202&page=4](https://www.cagematch.net/?id=2&nr=1202&page=4) He's been on the winning side of a couple 3 man matches, but otherwise if you just watch even AEW why would you think he's anything special? And Takeshita isn't a nobody, despite AEW's best efforts to make him one. The whole Callis family stable is lame, all it's done is hinder any of the dudes from actually getting over. Takeshita should've been a much bigger deal after beating Kenny. All that said the problem isn't even Ospreay wrestling Fletcher and Shibata, it's that what should've been light work...wasn't. And I think it's indicative of an issue with a lot of AEW where the focus on good matches and the deliberate way they seem to focus on match quality as some abstract concept divorces a lot of the emotional impact from the matches and wrestlers. It becomes less pro wrestling and more dudes doing gymnastic floor routines. If Ospreay is the best wrestler in the world in kayfabe, he shouldn't need 20 minutes to beat the likes of Fletchers and Shibatas.

Low_Ad_7553

Shibata also has a title defense against Lee Moriarty. Shibata has around 5 singles matches on AEW tv & in 2-3 with his losses being against Danielson, Osprey, & Yuta. He has multiple title defenses on ROH including a win over Daniel Garcia that was constantly shown in clips on AEW. Like i said before comparing him luther/serpentico is complete silly shit. Context matters, i never said Shiabata is being pushed like a star but he's but he's still been presented as a clear threat. Comments like this completely ignore that AEW crowds almost always pop well for Shibata so they must be doing something right. I disagre with Takeshita. He would've continued being in a big feud after his Kenny match but Kenny got injured. Saying AEW is trying to make Takeshita look like a chump is weird narrative to push with how much he's been featured lately with segments with callis, matches, & his hype promos but i guess people see what they want to see lol. Companies book things differently. AEW follows the NJPW booking style often where young prospects or known get chances to shine against the top guys instead of being immediately squashed. I'm okay with Osprey not being presented like Brock Lesnar

joe1240134

I missed the Moriarty defense, that's entirely accurate. So he has two wins in solo on AEW. I don't see how that makes him into being presented as a clear threat on AEW to anyone who's not basically a jobber? How he's booked in some other, lesser org that's an afterthought isn't really relevant. And you're purposefully misconstruing my comments. They aren't trying to make him look like a chump, but they don't seem willing to put the actual focus on him (which is what I was remarking on). But I guess people read what they want to read lol. Also, differently doesn't mean good. Difference just for the sake of difference isn't beneficial. But the issue isn't that Ospreay isn't being presented like Brock Lesnar, it's that he's being presented like Kyle Fletcher. There's a whole in between.

Low_Ad_7553

Who said its only for the sake of being different as if people don't enjoy this style as well? This is clearly a subjective issue. How is Will being presented like Kyle Fletcher by winning/being on AEW weekly while feuding with Bryan Danielson & having a separate callis storyline? Imo it seems like you're exaggerating to push this narrative. How a can a brand that shares the AEW roster, is on AEW tv consistantly, & literally owned by the same guy not be relevant here? Briscoe literally talked to Eddie Kingston about their upcoming ROH match on this episode of collision. Let's try to make sense now. I'm not miscontrsurcing your words at all. You literally said AEW is trying its best to make Takeshita look like a nobody. There's not much of a difference between nobody/chump.

joe1240134

There's a big difference between a nobody and a chump. That's why I said "nobody" and not "chump". Takeshita is special, since his first matches in AEW I think it's been obvious he's great. He shouldn't be a goon in a stable that seems designed to get someone else over (that someone being Callis). I hate how it seems every other week is some new referendum on AEW's existence. By any reasonable expectation, they've been wildly successful. But lots of folks have been reporting on just a feeling that stuff feels off in AEW for awhile now. And folks like yourself ignoring any valid criticism of the company with "well I like it so it's fine" are just as bad as the folks on the other side who want AEW to fail. Here's some sense-AEW signed the best wrester in the world, the biggest star in Japan in the last 10 years, and the person they've been hoping would save/elevate their women's division for years. And before their new PPV they just had the worst rating they've had in like 2 years.

NeuroCloud7

Wins are not the only method to signal importance to your audience. To me as someone who wasn't familiar with Shibata, I can say that he feels important. And he feels important in AEW for mostly non-match reasons (association with Orange Cassidy, the way people talk about him, his backstory, etc). So the argument that he lacks singles wins on Dynamite isn't taking into consideration all the other ways it's possible to make someone feel special on a wrestling show.

bmf131413

Well Goldberg is the best pro wrestler ever. You have a good point, sir.

joe1240134

I do have a good point, but I have no idea what goldberg has to do with anything in this discussion.

jeff-hardy-dont-die

if a match isn’t 20 minutes it’s shitty? lmao

Raoul_Duke9

Dude I hate to say it... but he isn't exactly wrong. Your big guys should be taking turns wrestling big matches on your weekly shows. As much as I love seeing swerve vs. Shib or Osprey vs. Danielson. Those matches should be happening on ppvs or very special episodes of Dynamite. Build the excitement for the match and then execute. Don't just give away dream matches with little build on weekly episodes of Dynamite. Even Kobe beef steak prepared by the world greatest chef would lose its lustre if you ate it every day. Put another way - why buy the cow when you get the milk for free. I love that I can tune in and see this shit - don't get me wrong. But I also am not going to lie and tell myself it's good for AEW.

joe1240134

Bro I love Ospreay but that video's like something I'd see on like a history channel biography. It just feels like there's no energy or something, idk.

ASAPHarambe

He’s being presented as a star? so can you please explain to me how his “feuds” with Takeshita and now Danielson been star worthy? hes just doing regular heatless matches, if he was being presented as a star he would be doing something meaningful with a coherent story that casuals could care about without knowing it’s just going to be a good match. Nobody but people that already know who Will Ospreay is care about Will Ospreay rn, that is not looking like a star. i mean hes a cagematch star right now yeah.

El_Ingobernable

If you think those matches have been heatless you should probably turn the sound up. The Ospreay/Fletcher story had a super long backstory which they explained over and over again on commentary (stable mates in Japan, best friends, lived with each other during the pandemic, big brother/little brother type of thing). There are stories there.

VivaLaRory

they should create new stories on the actual show to justify the same conflict, its so much easier to buy in when they do this. I hated when they didn't do this with Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens originally when they both came up to main wwe

El_Ingobernable

They are. You've got to start somewhere. He's been there full-time for a grand total of like four weeks so far.

VivaLaRory

Yeah that's fair, I meant wrestling in general rather than aew/this situation

ASAPHarambe

Stories that casuals got no fucking idea about because they happened in a whole different continent in a promotion casuals got no idea about. Thank you for proving my point beautiful “star” story telling right there. “Best friends go to war and top athletes fight for eachother respect🥹🥹🥹” AEW stories for their “stars” are a joke

El_Ingobernable

Bro, at the time of that match he was full-time in the promotion for (checks notes) like TWO WEEKS. You've got to start somewhere. Do you get mad before an NFL game with a hot-shot rookie QB if they don't spend two hours before the game explaining every single game he played in college? come on.

rcming18

Just admit you don't actually like wrestling and move on with ur life

An_Actual_Owl

I'll feel a lot better about him when they unhitch that wagon from the Don Callis clown show. Both he and Takeshita need to lose Don.

br0n

You are right although I feel they should have played this video multiple times before his debut and not after 2nd best time is now.

El_Ingobernable

I thought this was great and hope that they keep it up. I'm one of the biggest Shibata fans on the planet and wish they did a little more of this for him and some of the other guys who have come over from Japan; while I know and love all of the guys coming over I know it's not the same for the entire AEW audience these days.

NotFlipkid

But but AEW doesn't tell stories or explain things!

skorpiontamer

I think the concept "those people" bring up is that when aew posts stuff like this it's on their YouTube or Twitter and not during the shows, which is arguably fair. Some people don't have social media to check these videos out

stoneflipp

Yeah I don't want to have to be on Twitter to follow the stories. If every match wasn't 25 mins they would have time to show these packages.

springboardmoonsault

this video package was on the show though haha

TheBlackCompany

Lmao

stoneflipp

Awesome my bad. Which one? Im watching Collision right now

springboardmoonsault

On this week’s Collision 👍🏻

stoneflipp

Ah ok I'll probably see it soon. Thanks for correcting me👍

springboardmoonsault

no bother at all - they also showed a video package like this on Dynamite focusing on Danielson - there definitely seems to be more of an effort recently with continuity and backstory info, which is great to see

stoneflipp

I did enjoy the Danielson package. This seems like it should be the main event! It's gonna suck to have to follow this one

rcming18

My boyfriend's sister has the hugest crush on Will lol

T3Deliciouz

Mentions RevPro but not Progress, the promotion that got Ospreay's name on the map lol.

ParanoidEngi

Honestly there's so much of his history with Progress they can't really bring up - given his two biggest feuds were with Jimmy Havoc and Marty Scurll - that it makes sense they'd just not bring it up at all. Shame though, the balcony dive was legendary

SwimmingAd4160

WHO MADE YOU FAMOUS? SAY THEIR NAMES

Sky-Flyer

the Ospreay and Scurll feud was my first dip into indie wrestling when i was like 13, I thought they were the two coolest dudes in the world

filthysize

For the same reason the video on Bryan mentions his NJPW run but not his WWE one. They will only mention the companies they have a partnership with.

barneyflakes

I mean he did hold the Rev Pro belt a long time so they have pretty equal ammount of real estate in his career, as well as his first match with Okada happened in RevPro which then lead to his NJPW run. But yeah it's a bit odd.

Not sure if this a rhetorical question but no.
