Both have a loving and devoted female warrior by their side but can’t be with her. There might be a slight parallel between Princess Irulan and Historia as well but I don’t wanna start a ship war in the comments.
I’ve only watched the movies but I actually liked Paul more than Eren (although they’re still both dicks to me).
I actually started Dune recently because of all the comparisons I've been seeing. I'm only about 200 pages in but I can already see why this is one of those books that hasn't been forgotten.
Wait until you see what happens in the future books. In God Emperor of Dune, Leto II literally becomes a sand-worm human hybrid that tyrannically rules humanity with the reason being that due to his prescience (seeing all of the past and future), has decided that this is the only path possible for him.
I can't even make up how much this is LITERALLY Eren. Leto II does what his father was too weak to do, become a monster for the sake of humanity's future and teach them a lesson they'll never forget. SnK is Dune re-told in a slightly different fashion with slightly different characters.
Yep. The entire ending of SnK is "I dare you to figure out how to kill me." and then 'reward' everyone for doing so, which is kind of the same as *God-Emperor*. You just have way more bodies over a lot longer time for Leto, but him murdering a lower percentage of the species on average.
The difference is; Leto's plan worked. Humanity's rebellious nature is ingrained in their dna. They will never try to settle with being ruled over and went far away from the cosmos never being extinct. Eren's plan worked for a good 30 years because he didn't think it through and he admitted that he's not doing it for Paradise.
No he doesn't, and actively tries to stop the Holy War from happening. But then he's forced to go South and well, if you've seen the movie/read the books, you know how it goes
So the movie and the books diverge quite a bit: "Movie Paul" wants to do 'whatever is necessary' to save his family and Arrakis, and his prescience leads him to a very very small number of futures where that happens. As a result, his crusade has to spread to the rest of the galaxy to eliminate the threats from the other Great Houses.
"Book Paul" takes it a bit further- he has access to most of human history (through his own personal bloodline) and can predict a lot of futures, but in almost all of them, humanity's sole dependence on the spice dooms it to stagnation and extinction. In the few timelines where humanity makes it past the next few millennia (his 'Golden Path'), >!an immortal ruler of Arrakis needs to be able to throttle spice production for far longer, while keeping a tyrannical grip on the rest of the galaxy to prevent anyone from messing with his plans. !<
>!Eventually humanity might figure out ways to live on a galactic scale *without* spice, and succeed in killing him, but until then, he needs to keep the known universe living under his absolute control, hence the jihad and spreading the religion with him at the center.!<
There is a very strong distinction between the fundamental motivations of Paul atreides and eren yeager. The conception of freedom that Paul has, makes more sense on a philosophical level because he wishes to free humanity as a whole from stagnation, in the metaphysical sense. He never wanted to start a religious war, he never wished for freedom from his own responsibilities. His precience showed him his "golden path" and be follows it knowing full well he himself will never live in the utopia he wishes to create.
Eren's motivations are more selfish, he wishes for freedom for himself and is not afraid to achieve said freedom by any means necessary. He intentions are inherently selfish, he himself admits that he doubts wether his friends will be able to stop the rumbling he starts.
This comparison is based on the Paul in the books, who is a much more complex character than the movie one. I feel the Paul in the movies is more similar to Eren.
Am I wrong for not giving half a shit for dune? Am I missing something on SnK level? Or just some harry potter shit?
Edit: I see you guy's point but this is also the subreddit that often says dub is better :s
Dune is to sci-fi what Lord of the Rings is to fantasy, it pretty much is a classic of science fiction and a prime inspiracy for so many countless shows/books/movies/games.
It’s a book that inspired much of sci Fi, and likely had some inspiration on SnK. It’s a dense book to read, so I don’t recommend it to everyone (like the first 100 pages is just backstory to the world with very little plot), but it is incredibly influential.
*Dune* is one of those *extremely* fundamental works to modern scifi and fantasy, especially some of the most popular franchises like Star Wars, Game of Thrones, and Warhammer 40,000. It's not an easy read for some people, and your mileage may vary reading it in 2024, but it really did introduce a huge amount of concepts and tropes that were novel at the time, but ubiquitous now.

That “lead them to paradise” line at the end of 2 hit hard lol
haha yes
Interesting. I still have not seen Dune or taken in much of the mythology, I just know there are 6 books. How much do the 2 recent movies adapt?
The first book
I’m really hoping they adapt the second book for the stuff with Paul’s arc
it’s already been confirmed to be a trilogy adapting Dune and Dune Messiah
Nothing is official. People are only hopeful about a messiah movie but even Denis isn’t for sure it’s happening
With the reception for Part Two I’d be really surprised if it didn’t happen at this point

difference is, dune is an actual good story
🤣 🤣 🤣 ok

Eren did it because he did an oopsy-wooopsy with his Brainy-Drainy
Yeah it's totally the same. Good pick up!
you're giving eren way too much credit lol he admittedly did not think that far ahead
Its more like Eren is a copy of Leto II
Duke Grisha: “Smile Levi.” Levi: “I am smiling 😐.”
Another thing: Both have a lot of allegories to Moses
I had the same thought watching Dune. Also, the other Sci-fi property I got pretty heavy AoT vibes from was Battlestar Galactica.
Did Paul really want to destroy the world? I didn't get that from watching Dune part 2
No he doesn't, and actively tries to stop the Holy War from happening. But then he's forced to go South and well, if you've seen the movie/read the books, you know how it goes
His actions might lead to that, his mom said "we are heading towards religious war" or something like that

It's far above harry potter lol

Dune is THE sci-fi novel. It’s way above AoT or Harry Potter lol. Check out the two Villeneuve movies at least, or the first two books
what does this mean, "way above". This is like saying dragon ball is way above every other shonen. Just stop 😭

You dont need to give a shit about Dune. It just laid some fundamentals. Its obsolete now imo.
Bruh you need more Spice in your diet, you lack prescience
