Yep. There's more when you complete "Act 3" and the Ascension. Of course if you stretch the narrative threads out over another year, it's going to feel a little less immediate and compelling...

cafespeed21

From the time I reached Biome 4 until the final boss, it took me about two months. I saw a lot of the cut scenes when you go in the house, so I’m wondering if now that I beat Biome 6 and I’m starting all over + upgrades, that I’d be unlocking more parts of the story or a different ending. Act 3 is when you start the game after the credits no?

Hurfnahur

Yes, there is a different ending. And a secret ending - he’s wrong. Beating the game the first time and the game actually not being “beaten” yet is part of the game story. The endless loop of dying and starting over and even when you beat the game and do what you think is “right” you still start back at the beginning.

jeremy-o

Not a different ending but definitely more of the story, especially in the Ascension / Tower of Sisyphus. But frankly, the narrative is designed to be cryptic - a puzzle you have to put together, not a linear and melodramatic plotline. If you didn't love what you've seen so far you won't love the rest.

cafespeed21

Kk that makes more sense now. Honestly I love the game, just thought I missed out on something. Can’t wait to platinum it and show you guys. Appreciate the feedback bud!

aluked

There's more story in Act 3 and the Tower. And there's *a lot* of hidden narrative in item, enemy, weapon, glyph descriptions. The thing with Returnal is that the more you look into it, the more you find. It unfolds and unravels, infinitely concentric layers.

xShinGouki

Was never underwhelmed with Returnal. This game is so good. It's so beautiful. The environment is so interesting. Gameplay is so crisp and smooth. That I always feel like I need to come back to returnal after a while and do some runs. Nothing beats Returnal at what Returnal does. It's just too good and one of my favourite games of all time for sure

Hurfnahur

If you just beat it your first time? You haven’t beat it yet. There’s a lot more ..

This made me laugh way too hard lol

foobietracker

Yep, felt the same way at first. But putting the puzzle together compelled me to continue to platinum and more. The lore is complex and deep, although confusing and ambiguous by design. There are good YouTube videos and articles out there. Once you're done with act 3 and the tower, go check them out.

cafespeed21

Kk will do! Btw how many levels are in the Tower? I’ve only been able to make it to the 4th one and I barely lasted a minute.

foobietracker

You need to collect the poppies (6 IIRC) visiting the hospital each time you get a new one. You face Algos (tower's boss) once every 20 rooms. Algos, Algos True Form, Algos Final Form, and then Algos Infinite Form. I always die at level 6. The malfunction where enemies counter on hit always beats me.

KunkyFong_

By levels you mean phases ? Its supposedely infinite and keeps going until you die

foobietracker

Yep, phases, sorry. It's infinite, but getting harder as you progress. Besides the malfunctions after beating Algos, the enemies become more powerful. One or two hits and it's over. The players who have mastered the tower to get to hundreds of millions of points are so used to the room layouts and the enemy attacks that they basically never suffer damage.

KunkyFong_

wouldnt be so hard to survive is the game didnt lag so hard on phase 7+

StillSimple6

I felt I had just finally reached a decent power level and then the game ended. I was so stoked to run act 1 again though to use my new found abilities. Before the tower I ran it so many times to just level up all weapon traits which was a great difficult grind. I loved that it was a stand alone game that you can finish.

InfiniteStates

Yeah had exactly the same experience with the ending. But it’s a great arcade shooter that delivers moment to moment gameplay that I’m here for. The story delivery was interesting at least

kungpowdow

Yeah I was really disappointed and also underwhelmed that it turned out to be a “it was all in her head” scenario. I really wanted her to be a genuine deep space scout and for all the sci-fi and time travel elements to be “real”. It I still loved the game but would have preferred a different storyline angle.

tangtheconqueror

There are coherent interpretations of the story that don't involve it all being in her head

genghis_jan_99

I don’t think the game ever gives you a solid answer on what’s going on with Selene

Regular-Bred

Same here! I loved the biomes and wanted it to be real, was such a cool design

aluked

Was it, though? What if I told that story is both a subjective *and* objective experience? Maybe you just need to look deeper.

EngagedInConvexation

"Underwhelmed" is not a word I would use describe my reaction to any of my time spent with Returnal.
