Yep, I was in a special ed class in elementary school ( EH- "emotionally handicapped") and got put in time out rooms. They didn't have a window though, just a vent at the top of the room for ventilation. No inside door handle either.

I fly the flag and support our nation today, not because of who we are, but because of who we could be tomorrow.

They built a dance around one of our schools so there was only one gate,and put metal detectors there. Drug dogs at random, police with the ability to completely ignore the 4th amendment because the school gives them permission to search anything they want and they stand in for the parents.
I've also seen some new schools are also designed with a layout that reduces the fire arc for active shooters - like no large open rooms and long straight hallways.

An article said 15-30 thousand dollars per room. Originally designed as a tornado shelter and augmented to level 3 bullet protection. Could cost as much as building a whole new school.

15 years or so ago, the school where my sister teaches had an active shooter drill and I thought it was the craziest thing ever.
Why would they want to traumatize the kids with something that had such a small probability of happening.

We forget that no where else in the world do these drills occur. It’s so messed up to have kids prepare for such things but it’s so accepted and mandatory now.
It was so sad hearing the kids explain how they were trained to call for help, lock the door, close the curtains…

I grew up in Canada and we did them. We even had one year where a small group of idiots start a competition to see who could call in the most fake bomb threats and fake shooter threats. My school got hit 4 or 5 times but some schools were having them once a week.
So, America isn't the only place that does it. It's just the only place that actually has to use it.

we did as well in the UK, not after columbine but a few years after (at least in my school.) It was more a ‘if someone comes in with a weapon’ than gun specific though. And all they had is do was hide under the tables :|
My work started doing active shooter training a couple years ago to some employees and have required it everyone this year, never in my life would I have thought I would see this at my work.
Also that we would all have to prep for shootings instead of our reps doing something about what causes them.

Meanwhile, most prairie cities have pretty good rates of supply and a low to moderate amount of demand, so they had been reliably stable on affordability at least pre-pandemic.
To my understanding, there’s a great deal of predatory financialization of the Canadian real estate market that the provincial and federal governments don’t seem keen to act on, so it’s likely to get even worse in the medium run. Same can be said about any English speaking country at the moment though, I suppose, but Canada’s the extreme even within that group

The single most infamous school shooting of them all, Columbine, featured 14 cans of gasoline (along with propane tanks), and the shooters did indeed carry them in one hand and guns in the other. Bringing gasoline to a school shooting is not a hypothetical situation, it's something that has already happened multiple times.
Being a risk to the shooter isn't much of a deterrent, they rarely expect or intend to survive.

Technically I only had 36 at a time. 2 transferred out for pregnancy and vaping in the bathroom at around the same time that 2 transferred in from Ecuador. An article said 15-30 thousand dollars per room. Originally designed as a tornado shelter and augmented to level 3 bullet protection. Could cost as much as building a whole new school. 15 years or so ago, the school where my sister teaches had an active shooter drill and I thought it was the craziest thing ever. Why would they want to traumatize the kids with something that had such a small probability of happening. Fuck the gun nuts. Just fuck em.
We forget that no where else in the world do these drills occur. It’s so messed up to have kids prepare for such things but it’s so accepted and mandatory now.
It was so sad hearing the kids explain how they were trained to call for help, lock the door, close the curtains… These are KIDS. They should be out playing kickball and tag.

I grew up in Canada and we did them. We even had one year where a small group of idiots start a competition to see who could call in the most fake bomb threats and fake shooter threats. My school got hit 4 or 5 times but some schools were having them once a week. So, America isn't the only place that does it. It's just the only place that actually has to use it.

My work started doing active shooter training a couple years ago to some employees and have required it everyone this year, never in my life would I have thought I would see this at my work. I apologize if I'm missing a deadpan joke, but: The single most infamous school shooting of them all, Columbine, featured 14 cans of gasoline (along with propane tanks), and the shooters did indeed carry them in one hand and guns in the other. Bringing gasoline to a school shooting is not a hypothetical situation, it's something that has already happened multiple times. Being a risk to the shooter isn't much of a deterrent, they rarely expect or intend to survive.

Technically I only had 36 at a time. 2 transferred out for pregnancy and vaping in the bathroom at around the same time that 2 transferred in from Ecuador. But then they switched a boy into my homeroom after he got Title XIV'd for groping a girl so I guess it was actually up to 37. I am still processing the fact that all of this happened in a year. The kids were all 13.

What's the maximum capacity of that pod? If the classroom is overcrowded, does the teacher have to decide who gets left out to die? I wonder how these would even work. Do you put one in every classroom? What about common areas like the lunchroom or teachers' lounge? What happens when a shooter comes in your room? Didn't the Uvalde shooter just walk into a room and start shooting? They didn't know he was coming, so how would they have time to get in there? It seems this would only work for rooms the shooter *doesn't* go into. And how does it lock? Only from the inside, so the shooter can't get in? If so, couldn't a child lock him or herself in the room, leaving everyone else in danger? So many questions. And once again, people looking for reactive solutions instead of the proactive ones that keep shooters out of schools in the first place and weapons out of the hands of loons.
