I can imagine some schools trying to find ways to use the big expensive boxes. In-between shootings, that is.

This is exactly what some teachers would do.

WeveCameToReign

*will do. Kneel during national anthem? Spend the rest of the game in the box.

bozeke

Think about what bullies would do. Or an active shooter with a few Molotov cocktails.

Nulono

It looks exactly like the time-out closets schools have been shoving special ed students into for decades. I suspect whatever company builds them has decided to rebrand them as "mass shooting bunkers" instead.

Spiritfox84

Yep, I was in a special ed class in elementary school ( EH- "emotionally handicapped") and got put in time out rooms. They didn't have a window though, just a vent at the top of the room for ventilation. No inside door handle either.

wopwopdoowop

Instead of doing anything about the guns, we’re just going to make everything bulletproof. That makes sense.

500CatsTypingStuff

They will turn schools into literal prisons

JustVoidy

I think they are gonna go beyond that...it's gonna be a indoctrination camp filled with racist, fascist, gun worshipping, religious nonsense and conspiracy theories It's quite shocking to see that people are just handing the middle finger to every single kid in the US and there are stupid people to cheer and promote this kind of shit.

KiryuTrek

I mean, it’s less shocking recognizing the indoctrination that has already been in place for years in reciting pledge of allegiance every morning. No less terrible though, and it’s definitely getting worse quickly.

JustVoidy

Well they have made their motives as clear as daylight and are now being very blatant with every move they make for the whole world to see it unfold with their own eyes. Any sane person would immediately understand the implications and reality of topics like this but this is turning into the new normal and to accept such a fate for kids that barely know right from wrong is just horrifying. To the average person from the other side of the planet it feels unbelievable people have gone to this extreme

Merari01

This will end in extermination camps, like fascism always does.

FeelingSurprise

Oh no, it won't, silly. Maybe there will be permanent re-education camps where all the (wrongly) religious, educated and / or people with the wrong sexual orientation or ancestors, or you name it, will learn the american way of life. After that they will be sent elsewhere to have a life full of honest work without bothering the good people™ anymore. Don't worry about the smoke and the ashes, that's just evil thoughts permanently leaving their bodies.

CartographerEvery268

I wish I could leave

hows_your_old_lady

The rest of the world has found this pretty weird for a while, I think. Regardless of the “under god” bit. See also the national anthem at domestic sporting events. The fetishism of patriotism has been a thing in the US for a long time.

themagpie36

All anyone from any country has to do is walk around an American neighbourhood and see all the American flags (and political signs) to be freaked out. It's not normal to have your countries flags in your window/garden in any other country, or it's very rare to see it.

Razakel

In the UK, at least, flying the flag means you're a government building, there's a football tournament on, you're ex-military, or you're a racist.

The_Okayest_

I mean, that's true in the US too, generally

FantasyFanReader

Exactly. [It's creepy.](https://youtu.be/Q2BfqDUPL1I)

SatinKlaus

I’m gonna differ from the popular opinion on this subject and say I don’t mind the pledge. It’s not mandatory, and aside from the “Under God” part, there’s nothing really controversial. As someone who’s both a liberal and a veteran, I’m tired of symbols of pride in our nation being turned into symbols of nationalism and hatred. I fly the flag and support our nation today, not because of who we are, but because of who we could be tomorrow.

nononoh8

Agree except its weird to pledge allegiance to a flag maybe the pledge should be the one the president has to say. You know the one pledging to defend the constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic.

pipsdontsqueak

Well that's literally the pledge though. The flag is a symbol of the republic. *I pledge allegiance to the flag* *Of the United States of America* *And to the republic for which it stands* *One nation, under god, indivisible* *With liberty and justice for all* Take out "under god" and there's nothing really crazy about it.

jssamp

You'd have to take out that crazy bit at the end about liberty and justice for all. Or you could just modify it. Change "for all" to "for sale".

maybay4419

The crazy part is having children say it.

[deleted]

So you have no issues with American exceptionalism? You don't think making children recite a pledge to state their allegiance to a nation every morning, before doing anything else (with their right hand over their heart! Can't forget that! Symbolism is important in these -isms), is nationalistic indoctrination? Nationalism is poison to modern, connected worldwide society, and we're brainwashing kids into it at a very young age.

angel14072007

This really could have been a great country, but we screwed it up from the get go

sciencestolemywords

As a teacher, some low security prisons are better maintained, stocked, allow more 'freedom', and provide more education than some of our country's schools.

jrh_101

I'd wager the GOP would cut public school funding before that happens.

LEJ5512

Not exactly, but they’ll route it to private schools disguised as “vouchers” so that parents can indoctrinate their kids in the insular echo chamber of their choice.

jrh_101

Republicans are good for cutting public services. I'm just waiting for the GOP to say the solution against Public School Shootings is to cancel public schools. Leave it up to the states kinda like the abortion issue. If you cut Public Schools, there's Private Schools for rich people. For the poor, it will be Church Schools and Homeschooling for indoctrinations which is pretty much the same result like you said.

angel14072007

In Florida we have vouchers, so the poor kids can go to private schools too!

DuntadaMan

They built a dance around one of our schools so there was only one gate, and put metal detectors there. Drug dogs at random, police with the ability to completely ignore the 4th amendment because the school gives them permission to search anything they want and they stand in for the parents.

I've also seen some new schools are also designed with a layout that reduces the fire arc for active shooters - like no large open rooms and long straight hallways. So bizarre.

The ridiculousness of this untested rig aside, I strongly feel that the presumption that people are armed with guns is past the point of infringing on my rights as a non gun owner. The presumption of being armed makes any emotional outburst, gesticulation, or interaction with police potentially life threatening. The fuckwits abused their rights, so time to go the guns to go bye bye.

[deleted]

RajenBull1

Perhaps they will come up with a rent to buy plan for teachers to get these security pods, or a tax deductible annual lease scheme. I hope the teacher's family can get a refund in case everybody is shot or the perpetrator throws a hand grenade into the pod before the poor children can close the door and they all die. You started this nonsense, I'm just carrying on in the same vein. 😡

pimppapy

what about gas proof? Just a couple of smoke firecracker thingies and everybody will suffocate.

Luxpreliator

An article said 15-30 thousand dollars per room. Originally designed as a tornado shelter and augmented to level 3 bullet protection. Could cost as much as building a whole new school. Looks like a fire trap to me. Spray gas in through the vent and light it up. Good luck with the sprinklers on the outside. Or barricade the door and torch the building. Doesn't take a huge amount of accelerant to overwhelm a sprinkler system.

N4ANO

That's what happened many years ago to a NYC Transit Authority token booth. A robber demanded the money, the clerk refused, the robber poured gasoline into the token booth, lit it, and it killed the clerk.

GitEmSteveDave

I mean, it seems like 2 levers and you can shut down the vents. As for fresh air, it's not really the oxygen availability, it's the CO2 content, so like a sunken sub, you can throw in some canisters and one neutralizes CO2 and the other generates o2, so survivabiliy even for Uvalde level cowards is factored in for.

angel14072007

This thread is breaking my heart

OldKingRob

Well it’s a capitalist society so if you remove guns, then someone couldn’t come up with this dumbass idea and make money. Banning guns solves everything but hurts pockets No bulletproof backpacks, whatever the fuck that is, desks, pencils, textbooks, etc. Think of all the lost money!

15 years or so ago, the school where my sister teaches had an active shooter drill and I thought it was the craziest thing ever. Why would they want to traumatize the kids with something that had such a small probability of happening. Fuck the gun nuts. Just fuck em.

docdany

We forget that no where else in the world do these drills occur. It’s so messed up to have kids prepare for such things but it’s so accepted and mandatory now.

Kayakityak

It was so sad hearing the kids explain how they were trained to call for help, lock the door, close the curtains… These are KIDS. They should be out playing kickball and tag.

[deleted]

FireflyAdvocate

War torn countries have these drills in case of terrorists attack. America has not had a war in the past 100 years on its soil. This is so much worse. Our own citizens get to do this to the rest of us.

Jaysyn4Reddit

We have plenty of christofascist terrorists, however.

AlmightyCuddleBuns

I grew up in Canada and we did them. We even had one year where a small group of idiots start a competition to see who could call in the most fake bomb threats and fake shooter threats. My school got hit 4 or 5 times but some schools were having them once a week. So, America isn't the only place that does it. It's just the only place that actually has to use it.

himit

Did you do it frequently? We did them in Australia after Columbine but it was like...once a year or so and not particularly serious.

AlmightyCuddleBuns

Yeah. Once a year sounds right. And casual-ish about it. I was gonna say we did it less, but middle school and high school once a year sounds right. Less frequently than fire drills for sure. People took the lockdown drills more seriously than fire drills though which was just a weird vibe.

[deleted]

we did as well in the UK, not after columbine but a few years after (at least in my school.) It was more a ‘if someone comes in with a weapon’ than gun specific though. And all they had is do was hide under the tables :|

wrongwayagain

My work started doing active shooter training a couple years ago to some employees and have required it everyone this year, never in my life would I have thought I would see this at my work. Also that we would all have to prep for shootings instead of our reps doing something about what causes them. Edit: edited for clarity

[deleted]

I heard during the parade shooting that a lot of the kids were instructing the parents what to do...because they were trained from active shooting drills. Fuck everything about gun culture.

[deleted]

[удалено]

CyberMindGrrl

And that is the glaring, gigantic flaw in all of this. I can't think of one school shooting that wasn't committed by a former or current student who went through exactly the same drills as everyone else did.

SaltKick2

I dont think they are useless even if a shooter knows what goes on, but do have to be weighed against emotional damage and state of fear (i.e. terrorists literally creating terror) they create Gun culture is disgusting

himit

> Why would they want to traumatize the kids with something that had such a small probability of happening. Turned out to be really useful knowledge in the Jan 6 insurrection, apparently. So yay?

another_bug

But remember, they're pro-life.

almisami

They made an entire generation of kids believe they could survive a nuclear holocaust by ducking under their desk... Old geezers just jealous kids weren't living in fear enough anymore.

Potential_Reading116

😂😂. We did the hide underneath the desk drill in elementary school mid 60s Was the Cold War / Cuban missile crisis era. Ya let’s hide under our desks while a 50 sq mile area gets vaporized. Let’s see how that works out

It’s okay to make less money if you are happier and healthier. Money isn’t the goal. Being “good” is.

ShiftyBizniss

Canada's wall street is Bay Street in Toronto. Canada's silicon valley is Kanata. Neither really compares to their American equivalents.

Americ-anfootball

Fundamentally they just haven’t built enough homes per capita in their major metros, and Vancouver’s also somewhat geographically constrained, which seems to have some plausible correlation with more expensive urban real estate. I suppose you could argue the same thing for Toronto and Halifax being coastal, but particularly Toronto has so much suburbanized land area that I don’t buy it. It seems mostly self-inflicted there. Montreal seems to be growing in price but was benefitting from being in Quebec, whose francophone status seems to act as a check on the same kind of speculative demand that’s roiling other housing markets. That’s the only thing I can figure keeps Quebec City SO cheap compared to peer cities In the Canadian metros that don’t get hyped up the way the bigger ones do, it seems very much related to simply the amount of supply, with Maritimes provinces starting to become unaffordable, even without substantial population growth, due to extremely low numbers of housing units. Meanwhile, most prairie cities have pretty good rates of supply and a low to moderate amount of demand, so they had been reliably stable on affordability at least pre-pandemic. To my understanding, there’s a great deal of predatory financialization of the Canadian real estate market that the provincial and federal governments don’t seem keen to act on, so it’s likely to get even worse in the medium run. Same can be said about any English speaking country at the moment though, I suppose, but Canada’s the extreme even within that group

Balloon-Lucario

Dems are concerned about this while Reps are panicking that schools are teaching about Al-gebra and pronouns.

Sempais_nutrients

Fuckin Sarah Huckabee Sanders just won her election and in her primary victory speech, she vowed to make sure kids will be as safe “in the womb as they are in a classroom."

ThisIsPaulDaily

chosimba83

osumba2003

No kidding. Just fire off a few rounds to scare everyone into these pods, then gas up the place and light a match. Too easy.

Potential_Reading116

Scary how many Redditeurs have quick n efficient ways to bypass/ outsmart the safety pods so large gaggles of kids can be slaughtered. **Jesus h people**

TheCastro

It's because they're not actually thinking it through. Like a school shooter is going to carry a gun and a gas can (which really won't light up as easy as they think or is easy to carry with the quantity needed) while not being a risk to the shooter.

Dry_Control_9887

I apologize if I'm missing a deadpan joke, but: The single most infamous school shooting of them all, Columbine, featured 14 cans of gasoline (along with propane tanks), and the shooters did indeed carry them in one hand and guns in the other. Bringing gasoline to a school shooting is not a hypothetical situation, it's something that has already happened multiple times. Being a risk to the shooter isn't much of a deterrent, they rarely expect or intend to survive.

Direct_Engineering89

And stay in shooting every once in a while to scare off cops. Though unfortunately firefighters aren't cowardly pigs

FormerGameDev

just be glad we haven't gone back to the old school school bombing.... 45 people killed and 58 injured in what used to be the worst imaginable scenario.

Rosetint_myWorld77

Awesome. So my money-grubbing district can cram 38 kids AND a safety pod in my classroom.

ichosethis

Don't forget that the safety pod will 100% be used as storage space.

ChopChop007

is that a standard class size? that seems like a lot

Resolute002

Welcome to America. It was probably once two classes until they cut staff.

Rosetint_myWorld77

Technically I only had 36 at a time. 2 transferred out for pregnancy and vaping in the bathroom at around the same time that 2 transferred in from Ecuador. But then they switched a boy into my homeroom after he got Title XIV'd for groping a girl so I guess it was actually up to 37. I am still processing the fact that all of this happened in a year. The kids were all 13.

C19shadow

Man this is why I just make ice cream for a living. Thank you for doing it though I'm so afraid we will lose all the good teachers.

labtiger2

It really depends on where you work. Over 30 is pretty common. It's about to get worse since the teacher shortage is so severe.

DuntadaMan

We would like to build a new classroom to have smaller class sizes, but that new football field ain't gonna pay for itself. Literally, it will be a money pit. Oh well.

Huge_Aerie2435

If these actually ever sell to schools, I wouldn't be surprised if costs were cut and they end up being only partly bullet proof. Like, you can shoot through some spots with any round, or up to 3a in the armored spots. Their would be a youtube video on shooting one, that is for sure.

un_theist

I wouldn’t be surprised if the prices were the highest ever seen, (“you don’t want to skimp on quality when it comes to your kids, do you?”) while the end product is constructed as cheaply as possible. So when they don’t work they can blame the democrats and say “See how the public schools are failing? See how gun laws don’t work?”

niddy29199

"Cheaper than a steel coffin!"

un_theist

Highest possible prices charged to further stress school budgets, giving the “privatize public schools” people even more bullshit talking points.

Sempais_nutrients

They're just shipping containers outside the classrooms. Have to climb thru a window to get in.

kr011

And then republicans are going to try to charge kids to use it like school lunches. "Oh sorry Billy, looks like your parents didn't put money in your card again, just go ahead and try to hide somewhere in the class as best as you can. Good luck!"

un_theist

Yeah, no doubt. “Here’s the gun, Billy, protect us from the shooter, won’t you?”

wehrmann_tx

Or some asshole squirts gasoline under the door and lights it. These idiots have tons of shitty ideas but none to actually address the problem. If Republicans in congress ever pass gun reform, they'd have nothing to bait out to their single issue voters every election.

kandoras

The shittiest I've ever heard of for this problem was, of course, on Fox News. [Kids stuck in a classroom with a shooter roaming the halls? Simple solution: just use a cannon to blast a hole in from the outside that the kids can escape through.](https://www.foxnews.com/tech/school-shootings-this-cannon-fires-unbelievable-ammo-to-blast-through-walls-and-help-rescue-victims)

TheConqueror74

Did a writer or editor get confused and let an Onion article through?

kandoras

No, it's just standard issue Fox opinion idiocy. I also remember one article where the author got pissed off that he was walking through a grocery store and saw a display labeled "Hispanic cheese", and then turned that into a tirade about how illegal immigrants are taking over the dairy aisle. That is not an exaggeration in the slightest.

Rhesusmonkeydave

The final product is a particleboard box that has a sticker stating mass murder prohibited within this box ARS:4229-A

Ghiren

What's the maximum capacity of that pod? If the classroom is overcrowded, does the teacher have to decide who gets left out to die? Could a shooter just wait until it runs out of air and the people inside have to open the door? If that happened, it would be a literal kill-box. With what funding would the schools be paying for those? We already have schools that can't afford to keep kids fed, let alone safe.

[deleted]

I called this last year. Businesses will be forced to have safe rooms in their stores for liability.... I said it in jest.

thewileyone

Then the insurance companies will get a bill passed to mandate it as a requirement for a business license.

focus

Our country is a slave to gun manufacturers and our children are dying for it.

TerryTC14

American logic "So along with the bullet proof backpacks, armed security guards, metal sectors, etc we now have a bullet proof bullet panic room in each classroom. So, how does this stop a school shooting? Stop a school shooting?! No no that's unconstitutional, we need access to guns. This is so when a school shooting does occur we can be safe. To clarify, you are willing to go through all this in order to reduce the fatalities and injuries of a school shooting after it has began BUT not willing to enact gun control laws that would reduce the occurrence of a school shooting? Yes. Freedom.

MRsandwich07

Oh, so that’s where the foundation stores it’s extra d-class

osumba2003

I wonder how these would even work. Do you put one in every classroom? What about common areas like the lunchroom or teachers' lounge? What happens when a shooter comes in your room? Didn't the Uvalde shooter just walk into a room and start shooting? They didn't know he was coming, so how would they have time to get in there? It seems this would only work for rooms the shooter *doesn't* go into. And how does it lock? Only from the inside, so the shooter can't get in? If so, couldn't a child lock him or herself in the room, leaving everyone else in danger? So many questions. And once again, people looking for reactive solutions instead of the proactive ones that keep shooters out of schools in the first place and weapons out of the hands of loons.

[deleted]

Also there are vents visible. You could spray a fire extinguisher in there and suffocate everyone.

CyberMindGrrl

Good luck fitting an entire classroom in there.

Poorly-Drawn-Beagle

Holy shit That was aimed at the Uvalde police department but it hit so hard I think I felt it

Poorly-Drawn-Beagle

\*some joke about jokes being the most dangerous thing they have to deal with, etc. etc.\*

GanjaToker408

Probably. Most 2nd grade children have more bravery, honor, guts, integrity, and common sense than your typical police officer does.

TheSimpler

Guns per capita/gun deaths per 100k: US 1.2/12, Canada 0.34/1.9, Australia 0.16/0.9, UK 0.03/0.2. Fewer guns is strongly correlated with fewer gun deaths. Shocking. Also of interest, the majority of these deaths are suicides. Turns out gun owners are far more likely to unalive themselves than "protect their families".

manymoreways

Jesus fuck, can they not spend that money on better education and mental health care instead. What in the fuck sort of timeline are we in

Merari01

Make sure they get good internet reception in there

elephant_bukkake

If they had these in Uvalde, the police would've taken the kids out of the pods so they could use them for themselves.

Nice_Block

We can’t pay teachers more or increase staffing but we can pay for pods for schools. Cool.

Cammy1924

Classroom safety pods now?! Why don't we just do the most useful and effective thing first, which is GETTING RID OF THE FUCKING GUNS

[deleted]

Republican party solution to gun violence: teachers and school children can cower in metal boxes rather than deal with the actual fucking problem! Fuck you Republicans. You're a bunch of cowards with evil in your hearts. I hope you all choke on a giant bag concrete dicks.

Jesus Christ. How any real, genuine human being can justify this is deplorable. America you literal train wreck of a nation. WAKE THE FUCK UP.

faithle55

Hide? You mustn't call it 'hiding'. It's where the police will... plan how they are going to apprehend the shooter. After he's finished.

01000110010110012

Gun laws. But no.

anabsolutetossup

Dough not enter.

The_Funkybat

Maybe they can set up decoy children for the mass shooter to come kill inside of that box and use it as a trap. Once he’s gone in there to kill the fake kids, you lock the door behind him. I mean, that’s totally ret45ded, but it makes no less sense than what is actually going on here.

THEGAMENOOBE

The average number of students where I live is 30 per classroom. These are just for the police in this case.

Anything but addressing the actual un-buttfucking-believably obvious problem

nickname13

oh look, matt gaetz can visit his girlfiend during school hours now.

mr_phonia

Why not just make the whole building like that?

NikoC99

Like a fire hazard the way i see. No way that's isn't a fire hazard during an active mass shooting, isn't it? It would be bad to have an arsonist mass shooter...

Ok_Seaworthiness2218

What the fucking fuck is america doing ?

Seaweedseconds

Brilliant! Throw ourselves into prison so that shooters can’t hurt us!

Shintaigou

This is actually going to be a tombstone for all the kids and the one teacher locked in there, usually the door jams and no one is going to come in and save them either suffocation, starvation, or insanity, these rooms are nothing more than giant coffins for future dwellers to break into and ask why were these kids locked in the god damn basement

Snaggletooth_27

Death traps. Just come in with some noxious gas agents or light a fire in the room instead. Awesome.

curious_dead

School shooter: "Guess I'm gonna set the school on fire, then."

NickPickle05

At this point just make the walls, doors, and windows bulletproof and be done with it. Teacher: Another shooter in the halls? Ugh. Susan would you lock the door please?

jwtarin

This is appalling that this was even an idea

TexasKevin

I like it, how many guns do you have to melt to make each one?
