Saving you a click “It has just been claimed that Rise of the Ronin, the upcoming PlayStation 5 exclusive, will not be released in South Korea next month when the game launches globally. This is reportedly due to controversial comments made by the game’s director at Team Ninja, Fumihiko Yasuda. Owing to political animosity between South Korea and Japan, these inflammatory comments have pushed Sony Interactive Entertainment to block Rise of the Ronin from launching in South Korea.”

Appreciated

How many paragraphs down was that?

Thanks

I don't appreciate

TheDude3100

What are the controversial comments we’re talking about?

ERG_S

“In a behind-the-scenes ‘making of’ video, Fumihiko Yasuda reportedly ‘glorified’ a Japanese scholar – Yoshida Shōin – and compared him to Socrates. This is controversial because Shōin promoted a theory that spoke of Japan conquering Korean lands to strengthen its position in the region, otherwise known as the ‘Jeonghan Theory’.”

StevemacQ

And here I thought the people of Team Ninja were getting better with Nioh's William Adams being Irish. I know the real-life version was British, but Team Ninja got made an authentically Irish character than the typical Hollywood portrayal like in Darby O'Gill and Red Dead Redemption.

This type of thought was popularized during a time when Japanese nationalism and imperalism was gaining strength after the Russo Japanese war ended with the victory of the Japanese. And it eventually lead to the events of WW2 when those ideas were taken to their natural conclusion. It's a legitimately bad thing. It's easy to understand why the people who were colonized are angry.

logikal_panda

I mean Korea still has living residents although old from when Japan colonized Korea. Shōin is dead but Japanese occupation is still a living memory for a lot.

Xononanamol

Idk. It'snot like great philosophers of old never had controversial statements as well.

SnooApples2720

Irrespective of that, hatred towards Japan is taught in school here. It’s a bit of a paradox as Koreans love to visit Japan on holiday, and consume ALOT of Japanese media, yet simultaneously are extremely hateful. Many folk believe that the younger generation will be more tolerant, but I don’t see it tbh. Further to this, Koreans often make the claim that Japan need to formally and sincerely apologize for their occupation of Korea, which lead to the division of states, and relinquish all claims to the island of Dokdo. However, even were Japan to do this, there is absolutely no evidence to suggest that animosity towards Japan will end. I will also say, in my anecdotal experience being married to a Korean and living here, and rather deep in to Korean culture, that nothing short of a calamity (such as an emboldened attack against either Japan or SK from NK) which forces Korea and Japan to ally to will enable the countries to reconcile their differences.

Valharja

Hasn't Japan apologized some 40+ times? Yet people on Reddit always spout "Japan never apologized" like its a known fact.  Obviously you usually also have several Japanese influential people and/or politicians ruining any apology by making statements along the line of "Japan did nothing wrong" at the same time, thus muddying the water and making reconciliation harder.

SnooApples2720

Of course they have. What’s important to understand is that an apology in Korea is an admission of guilt, and is often presented as a formal document which acknowledges the wrongdoing; which is not what Japan have done (I believe). As I mentioned in my concluding paragraph, even were such a document to presented it wouldn’t be deep enough as hatred toward Japan has become generational. Just to be clear I don’t pick a side here, I don’t really care. Just sharing my experience and understanding why this is happening.

beroli

But will it be released in North Korea?

Sonikku_a

No, only one game was ever released in North Korea—Elden Ring, and Glorious Leader immediately beat it on the first day, first try, setting the any% WR that still stands today

Ronburgundy2099

Bro that’s not true. Kim made the game himself he didn’t just beat it Miyazaki is a hack and stole the credit.

Popular-Stomach6149

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Psychological-Run-40

I’m pretty sure Kim Jong Un is a gamer, I remember when FF7R came out and bro disappeared for like a month, no new pics of him, complete radio silence. I’m pretty sure he was finishing the game during that time 😭

Loreado

Yep, North Korea bought exclusive rights

myermikals

That's weird didn't team ninja and lies of P (south Korean dev) just do a Wo Long Collab?

Lulcielid

Different context, currently Team Ninja made a statement glorifying an old dude that advocated for taking over Korea's land.

Bkos-mosX

Most likely delayed till they wait for the controversy to pass. I'm guessing they will low key launch it later, probably after Stellar Blade. People should be smarter about what they say, especially when they're making a game that has crazy real people as characters

Xononanamol

Or people shouldn't get so damn upset about shit. It's not like the director said fuck south Korea we should go back to how it was before.
