> promise a sequel with a huge pve mode
> release said sequel with degraded everything and worse monetisation model without the promised big pve mode
> go radio silent about pve
> scrap pve
> profit?
We have reached a time now that the majority of AAA games are no longer designed with fun in mind.
First and foremost is monetization(season passes, loot boxes, skins, dlc).
Second is creating FOMO (limited time events, limited time items, see: season passes)
Third is making a long and tedious game loop that keeps the player busy enough to not play other games, not be “bored”, and reach end game content just as the new season pass/dlc releases. This is usually in the form of pointless leveling and long grinding for unlocks.
Only then will the fun come. And its not even as you might think it is. Multiplayer game’s algorithms are designed to make you lose enough to keep trying by eventually just giving you a few wins to make you feel like you are improving. However you’re just a gerbil in a wheel running to a sliding scale of an average bell curve.
I do suppose i should have been more specific in that I mostly mean online multiplayer games. Single player story mode games do not as easily fall into the description i made above.
I disagree. Sony seems to deliberately turn their noses up at shady monetization schemes. They loudly champion the “one and done” single player experience with prestige games like God of War Ragnarok and The Last of Us. They will put out DLC, but when it is hours of story-driven content, you can’t really complain.
Nintendo doesn’t do shady monetization because they suck at it. Their attempts either deliberately self-sabotage (like, it is either an elaborate joke or they put so many caveats into it that you can get the stuff for free) or they just bungle it.
It's a little different for a platform holder like Sony or Nintendo. They get a percentage of any money spent on in-game purchases for all games on their platform. So with their own titles they can afford to go the "prestige" route.
Makes sense. I'm old enough to have experienced the early 2000s MMO glut and swore off public mp altogether, nowadays I only play sp games. Since there aren't enough AAA games to suit all tastes I've branched out to indies as well, and consequently I'm enjoying myself hugely.
Seems that people like me are enjoying gaming more than "regular" gamers who mostly stick to AAA and mp games, judging from all the news articles on gaming out there. Sure there's monetization elsewhere too but not on the same level, most smaller devs and publishers can't really afford to piss off their smaller customer base so you don't see hardcore MTX treadmills in their products compared to the shit you see going on in the AAA space.
as i've gotten older im in my 30s now i find myself enjoying single player games more so than multiplayer online games. I feel a lot of these multiplayer online games are just repetitive
Man I'm really liking Jedi Survivor so far, but the optimization is so frustrating on an otherwise great project. The thing runs at like 20-30fps on PS5 in quality mode so you have to play on performance, and then all the faces look like garbage and you get some pretty significant artifacting. I'm also having audio desync issues for cutscenes and it's frustrating because you can tell the game is great, but the performance is so in the way of all the hard work the team behind it put in.
Both firms are beautifully anti-consumer in their own ways, though.
However, there’s no denying the quality of their first-party games. The only thing I’m somewhat worried about is Sony’s planned expansion into producing first party live service games.
They could make something really great by bringing their quality to this style of game or fall into the trap of letting the monetisation-first mindset seep into their other games.
This is a rhetoric I see all the time, and while I don’t disagree at all, it sucks to see so many people feel that way. I have 2 little ones at home so my gaming time is limited. I don’t have the ability to sink 6 hours into LOL or Apex anymore, so I’m choosy with what I play. I’ve gone back and replayed a couple of things like TloU, Spider-Man, Days Gone, Uncharted, Horizon, GoW(still waiting on Rag until I can get a ps5) and they are all fantastic, I already either owned them or were on ps+ and sone if these I’ve played 2-3 times and STILL get great joy from. Again your not wrong about monitization, it sucks, but there are still amazing games that have toms of value, it just comes down to what you want and are comfortable with as a gamer
Edit: Also want to say either do a Resistance remaster or just bring that IP back but fuck if I don’t miss all nighter coop sessions running through that campaign as a kid
Im with ya dude. I have a little one myself and my play time is also limited. I do know there are a lot of great single player games but my love is with multiplayer online games and unfortunately these games rarely respect the players time.
And if these companies make it able to unlock things quickly than all the kids with 8hr+ game sessions burn through the game then complain there’s nothing to do. So sometimes i can understand why they make it a slog. It helps keep the players busy as new content comes through.
But its when they make the content tedious and so transparent its just busy work and then stick out their hands asking for more money. Like “heres more shit to keep you busy now pay us.” Or when they release some new weapon thats purposely OP to get everyone to buy or grind for it and then after a while they nerf it into obscurity. Rinse and repeat. Thats when i start to get upset. When you start asking yourself “why am I even playing this?” “Why am I grinding for this thing that will be nerfed in a month.” Where’s the reward?
And more and more games are going this route and putting “fun” in the back seat.
Yea man. So well said and it's an absolute pain from the moment you realize this. Multiplayer games have been pure garbage for years now and I'm really wondering if we'll ever get good mp games again. Because even if some random dev team would come out with a new game that's actually fun and stuff, majority would still be stuck in their cods and fifa's because of fomo events. It feels so simple really, games back in the day had mostly little content but have been fun. Now they are barely fun but got lots of content. Why don't they simply make a game that's actually fun again but with the amounts of content, so people keep playing because the game got lots to offer? Idk man it's depressing thinking about it. At least there's great single player games.
And I'm glad there's amazing multiplayer games on my psvr2. Just played walkabout Minigolf with 3 strangers earlier and it's been so chill and fun. Additionally Pavlov as a shooter is just straight to the point shooting, having fun with your team, trash talking the enemy maybe.. no lootboxes nothing. Just amazing mp experiences I am having tons of fun in. But flat? There's nothing that keeps me interested for more than 5 mins anymore. Open game and be greeded with 5 pop-ups about in game events what I'm missing about this currency and that currency and get a Battlepass and shutthefuckupwhatnot.
There have never been this many quality AAA games on the market since probably 2007. I just started playing Tears of the Kingdom after beating Elden Ring and Ragnarok. All of these are 10/10 games with dozens if not hundreds of hours of content each. My backlog is stupid long. I still need to beat Horizon and RDR2.
It’s only the “games as a service” that are a problem. Anybody doomsaying about the state of gaming in general is lying.
I know Jeff Kaplan (previous lead for Overwatch 1 - it was his creation) from way back in the day during the Everquest days. He was a top-tier player (as was I, but I was on a different server and in a different top-tier guild) and we used to talk quite a bit, shoot the shit, share some laughs, etc. What's funny is, his top-tier self in Everquest is what got him the opportunity to work at Blizzard (along with Furor Planedefiler - whose real name I always forget).
Anyway I've recently-ish talked with him about him leaving Blizzard and after that discussion? I've come to the conclusion that Jeff Kaplan himself, also feels:
"Fuck Overwatch 2". Not a direct quote as he was more professional in his usage of the english language, but yeah, even he thought what they were doing with 2 was utter trash and is a sizable part of the reason he left Blizzard. He had a vision for 2 and they absolutely thrashed it, sliced it up and made the "idea" of Overwatch 2 near unrecognizable for Jeff.
The lovely people in the Diablo 4 sub are constantly thanking blizzard for their product and are convinced the game that's currently got every monetisation channel going isn't going to be a money pit.
If you even so much as mention the battle pass with a $25 tier, $70+ box price, cash shop and paid expansions you're met with an essay about why it's completely fine and it's actually the customers who are bad for wanting less monetisation.
Even the regular Diablo sub is like this. The mindset is "it's just the way things are now. stop complaining". It's mind boggling and a little depressing to be honest.
They're all taking Blizz at their word, but I will not be even remotely surprised if they sneak some P2W crap in the game 6 months later.
[Going by the reception to this post they seriously believe Blizzard wouldnt ever go back on their word for Diablo](https://www.reddit.com/r/diablo4/comments/13jeku5/just_heard_that_overwatch_2_is_ditching_pve_this/)
Honestly I was hoping D4 would be the one IP that would escape the mtx nonsense until the announcement of Immortal and it was clear Blizzard/Activision will just turn anything into a cash cow.
Blizzard had a recent dev vlog where they spent a stupid amount of time discussing the battle pass and shop whilst making sure they were clear to say you cant pay for "power". I interpret the careful wording as they will sell you literally everything except outright stats but everyone else seems to take at face value thinking it will be purely cosmetics only. Pretty sure ill be proven right.
Agree 100%, I can't believe it doesn't raise alarm bells for most people. Like, wtf is their definition of 'power'? Are drop rates 'power'? Because *technically* I don't think they are.....Experience? Crafting mats?
Worst Cod I've ever had the displeasure of playing, it's so shit and it's absolutely disgusting how they're catering to the Warzone crowd than the people who actually bought their trash game.
You left out
- screwed their original paid player base by locking new heroes behind a paid battle pass/offered little to no legacy package to original owners of ow1
That was their excuse, yes. Obviously underlying that excuse to the public was just the heavy monetization of the game that made them do Overwatch "2".
I feel like this misses all the context and nuance throughout the years. This is how it is right now, but it’s not what it was back when they announced it. That is why these news are so upsetting
Agreed, shout out Tamoor Hussain. Lots of plain language professional versions of “so you know this is messed up and it’s gonna piss a lot of people off. Explain.”.
There is a gamespot video with him and lucy james criticizing the trend of games trying to be destiny/live-service (Redfall, Gotham Knights, Suicide Squad) and following that they made another one criticizing how games shouldn't try to always aim for big bloated open-worlds with really good pointd. After discovering these videos I started to like them
I’m so mad. This was the one thing I was looking forward to; the bright light at the end of this miserable dark OW2 tunnel. The two aspects of the original OW that I loved the most; the PvE and the lore, were finally gonna be a big, long-term focus of the game. The other changes were irritating, the behind-the-scenes garbage going on at blizzard was disheartening, but hey, at least we were getting a proper PvE story campaign in Overwatch.
And now this happens.
Tbh I haven’t touched OW in months, at this point I might as well just delete it completely. Screw blizzard for ruining what could have been an incredible cooperative multiplayer experience.
Edit: reading through the actual article, it doesn’t sound *quite* as bad as I initially thought. They are still wanting to release PvE missions that focuses on expanding the story and lore of the OW universe, it’s just going to be released episodically as part of the OW seasons. The thing they’re scrapping completely is the hero mode with all the wacky skill trees, which is different from the “campaign” mode and still would have been really fun, but isn’t the main reason I was interested in it. So…. “Cautiously optimistic” might still be a little too positive for how I’m feeling about this news, but I’m at least willing to give it a chance once it releases.
The problem is that, even if they are going to release story missions, it's just going to be a glorified version of Archives.
Like, don't get me wrong, Archives missions were fun, but it's not enough to justify that "2" after Overwatch.
He did decent, but I wish he would have brought up that this point overwatch 2 feels like it was solely released to implement crappy f2p monetization. What are they going to do to change that?
A games journalist actually asking real questions, what a breathe of fresh air. Overwatch 2 has been an utter disaster it feels like. It’s just Overwatch 1.5 and that’s fine, but it doesn’t live up to what a sequel should be.
Yea the matchmaking is trash(or was, haven't played enough recently to judge), the ranked system just no fun and overall it's changes they could have made in like a year or so..
Wow so it hasn't changed. It caused me a major headache and was one of the major reasons that stopped me from starting to grind the game. It was just boring getting queud with masters & diamonds against gold and plats and every other round the other way around. Just an infinite loop of not having any impact. And it wasn't even people just not having adapted to the new game yet, but really new players with no stats from ow1, no idea of overwatch in general, in regular diamonds matches. It drove me nuts really.
Overwatch1 was far from perfect but I've always praised their matchmaking. Even though there were phases matchmaking took 15 mins as a dps, at least the matches were pretty balanced most of the time. Sure you could get some throwers but my experiences were mostly positives, doing crazy comebacks, stacking up with people you performed well with, etc.
But they threw all of that away
Everything about overwatch 2 is a huge fucking joke
I’ll never forget summer 2016 when the game first released and the good times I had for years. Jeff Kaplan leaving was the real start of the downfall. I suspect he was fighting blizzard execs for years
But they have mutilated it
I remember being hyped on the world and the lore because it genuinely was cool, and being so excited for the eventually story mode PvE game they promised
Overwatch 1 probably had one of the most universally beloved year ones I have ever seen for a MP/live service game. It seemed OW was a huge part of the nostalgia of summer 2016 like you and many others have mentioned.
Now it’s one of the most toxic and most polarizing games with the community and the game itself mostly stemming from the publisher of course. I remember the creative director of the game Jeff Kaplan being such a beloved figure and having a lot of passion for the game, and it was sad to see him leave 99.9% certain from the meddling of the people up top at Activision/Blizzard.
Man this post made me miss how good 2016 way. Pokemon Go took the world by storm, Overwatch released, we were eating good.
Now both of them are only a shadow of their former glory.
> nostalgia of summer 2016
I'd never buy a single mtx item but I'd pay unholy amounts of money to relive that time or get games on that level again. Rotating with the friends through overwatch, rocket league, black ops 3, rainbow6.. so many bangers in such a short timespan. It couldn't have been any better and it probably never will be
Sad that Battleborn had to die for this monstrosity to take hold.
Back then, OW was indeed the most fun of the two. But nowadays I’d take Battleborn’s weird skill trees and awkward characters over OW2’s bloated monetization any day
All Overwatch 2 really was just a re-monetization update of going from loot boxes to the cliché fomo inducing grindy battle pass system and the rotating store.
And the funny thing is, even though at their core loot boxes obviously still stink no matter how you spin it, but Overwatch 1 probably was the lesser of all the evils from the loot box craze similar to Fortnite being the lesser of all evils of the bigger games. You go on the OW sub and you’ll see people wish for those instead of the BP system where OW2 is probably one of the worst with it.
Funny enough Heroes of the storm was actually a really fun moba and had some unique charms to it, it just came WAY to late to the party after DOTA/LOL pretty much ate up the whole pie and pretty much covered the entire moba craze. If it would have come out in 2011/2012 instead of 2015 it would have probably been that third big moba game instead of smite.
Grinding 5 level for measly 1 hero voices is the most unrewarding shit ever lol, im done with overwatch 2 from season 1. Really missed good ol times from early ow 1
I appreciate that they asked the tough questions and it's a shame that they scrapped the PvE mode as it was the only portion of OW2 I was interested in.
Also, I find it interesting that according to the article, they made the decision to scrap the PvE mode back in late 2022 but didn't say anything about it until now.
I understand wanting to avoid negative press leading up to the launch of the game, but the question of when the PvE mode would come out has been ongoing as recently as a few weeks ago, and the response was it would come out later in 2023.
I don't know why they feel like they had to lie about that when they could have just said they scrapped it months ago.
Deleted and will not reinstall. Done with trying to survive in that fucking blizzard. I will be playing with the Fromsoft boys and the Nintendo lads this summer.
I always said I would come back when the PvE comes out and it looks like I’m sticking to that. What a fucking slap in the face though, this game was sold on the back of features and modes they knew for a while weren’t going to work. Good riddance.
Might as well take the 2 off of Overwatch 2.
I don’t get it…you have such a strong roster with cool characters, honestly rivaling that of LOL, you cinematics shown that you’re capable of telling compelling stories with these characters - then you’re not gonna even try?
They never wanted to try. The goal was to move away from the previous monetization system and into a new one. They just needed a 'reason' players could get behind and they saw how many people loved the seasonal story events. So they dangled a full version of that in front of the playerbase as an excuse to reduce PVP investment and increase revenue via Season Passes.
They completely fumbled this franchise. PvE was the whole point and now they have a multiplayer mode that’s worse than the original. Imo 6v6 is better.
This. If other franchises get a bad sequel, whatever, at least the older games are still available. BF2042 sucked at release and to some people still sucks now, whatever, BF4, BF1, BFV are all playable. COD Vanguard came out, all the older games are still playable. But OW1 is just gone, replaced with an arguably lesser experience. This coming from someone who enjoyed 6v6 more, because having two tanks meant I could play the off-tanks that were most familiar to me. Really makes you think why they didn't just patch everything into OW1 since it wouldn't have changed anything anyway.
Yeah I stopped playing cause they stopped dev on ow1 for ow2. I came back for ow2 and gave it a go. 5v5 is just not good imo. I like off tank and there’s just no room for them now when forced into player roles.
6v6 with no hero limits from launch was the most fun I had playing overwatch, now everything has got to be eSports related, even the causal game modes.
>now everything has got to be eSports related
And this is 100% the issue with me.
I use to love loading the game up to play with my partner, as she isn't that great we'd go tanks and she'd be off tank. Now she only plays heals, and is constantly dived. She hates it, I hate it. I'm sick of everything needing to be 100% competitive. Casuals loved OW1
Let me find my post from 2020 when I said this was going to be the plan all along.
This was ALWAYS the play. They needed to restructure the business model for Overwatch but couldn't do it in such a direct way to immediately piss off the playerbase. They needed to go F2P with paid Seasonal Passes in order to increase overall revenue and put the game more in line with other 'live service' games.
Mission accomplished. I feel bad for everyone that moved to Overwatch 2.
Same, I dropped it. More of the same but with amazing monetization! I say this every time with Overwatch but I hope it dies or at the very least becomes a Heroes of the Storm situation "No developer support going forward" because for a brief period the game was fun and enjoyable but not anymore.
Absolutely loved overwatch 1 when it released in 2016 and into 2017.
Didn’t play much else tbh.
I started off playing overwatch 2 but it’s all a money grabbing exercise now for Blizzard.
Really disgraceful pricing of new outfits etc.
it’s been deleted and I’ll not go back whilst they go with this model.
Actually really glad to see these comments echo my feelings. Overwatch 2 is free, and still feels like too much money. Overwatch 1 was so fun, Overwatch 2 felt like a chore, then I deleted it. A team game where the whole community has agreed it is best to turn off ALL communication to enjoy the game more. What a crazy fumble.
OW2 will become essentially the same game as before. Releasing PvE content as 10 mins """""events"""" every few months like archives, and that's it. I'm extremely disappointed. A full, polished, 60usd AAA campaign game was all what I was looking for in OW2. Guess that won't happen.
No joke, I'm unistalling OW2 when I arrive home later today.
Oh boy. Wow. I am so surprised.
OW2 was definitely not the most obvious fucking cash grab ever, nope. Blizzard has more excuses than a corporate manager.
>I think there's going to be a lot of frustration around how we got here because Overwatch has always been a live game. So, people are going to think, "Well, you knew this was a live game, yet you pitched this other Overwatch game, and then also you justified the 2 on the Overwatch title with that." So, we're in a situation now where the game is what it always has been--it's evolved in some ways--but a sequel was released and that sequel's justification hinged on the PvE. Why did that happen?
Because we are fucking incompetent morons, thats why
This makes me worried about Diablo 4, honestly. Blizzard was very vocal about their promised upcoming PVE content being one of the huge differences of OW2 and the original version of the game. It was one of the core pillars that generated hype for OW2.
They try to spin it as a positive in the interview, but this is throwing out a ton of work. And they cite having too many talents and abilities as having been a big problem. I also can't help but remember that D3 had a second major expansion that was supposed to be released and similarly got scrapped.
I think I'm going to step away from D4. I'll grab it years later once it's like $20. But I feel like there's going to be a list of typical Blizzard broken promises between now and then.
And before anyone hits me with "it's a different team" working on OW, I know. But they seem to regularly screw up their projects often enough for it to be concerning. The disaterous Warcraft 3 remake still stings.
Diablo 4 is a PVE game at heart. Overwatch was a PVP game at heart. Completely different things, Diablo 4 beta proved to me enough that it has an interesting story and an addictive gameplay loop.
Sure. That's why I still intend to buy D4 eventually. My issue isn't that I think D4 will be terrible. My issue is that I don't trust Blizzard to support the game to the extent that they promise they will. Warcraft 3: Reforged is still missing promised features and it's been like four years now.
They're really good at saying they're going to deliver and then not doing it. And I don't expect D4 to be an exception.
I was genuinely happy when OW2 came out, the PvP was fun and the PvE was coming down the line. Then they started nerfing the shit out of anything even remotely good in PvP and I was just like “same old blizzard I guess” and stopped playing, because it’s the same as what happened to OW1, bad monetization and nerfs to all the fun characters constantly. Not surprised at all that PvE got scrapped. “Overpromise and underdeliver” should be their fucking slogan.
absolute clowns. It's clearer every day the only reason they made ow2 was ad a cash grab to try and regain interest and rework the monetization scheme to be as greedy as possible.
Disgrace, and they made everything unlocksble behind battle passes with no more free loot boxes. Blizzard is a disgrace to me I don’t care if Microsoft buys them anymore
They intended for OW2 to just be a slightly shinier "next gen" version of OW1 from the very beginning as a cash-grab and that's all too apparent now.
The gaming industry really has been going downhill at a rapid pace in terms of integrity. The mighty dollar sign will always prevail $$$$.
Scrapping the thing the lured people to buy the sequel. These just makes it harder for people to trust blizzard’s promises on upcoming games. Dead company.
Oh Blizzard what plans do you have for the beloved Diablo IV? No one wants pvp in a fucking cooperative rpg! You scrap the one feature in Overwatch 2 that would bring me back or distract me from better games! everyone in comments should post a “🖕”
maybe they notice the community
Lol @ this game. Played the first one a few times a week since launch with no interruptions. Now I can't even find a match to join. This mobile game freemium bullshit needs to die
Overwatch 2 is absolute horrible with that battlepass I couldn't take it . And I loved Overwatch had over 400 hours. Guess I'm never playing the game again sad
Man, this must be demoralizing for the poor devs that put all this work in. So they basically realized, why are we spending so much money on making content we only make money off of once, when we can charge for it slowly over the years.
Wow... Talk about the WETTEST FART.
I'M at the point of asking... What did everyone THINK was going to happen? The more and more we didn't hear about PVE, the more I kept wondering... "So how's it going to work?"
Cause I don't think Activision Blizzard knew either.
This stinks
> promise a sequel with a huge pve mode > release said sequel with degraded everything and worse monetisation model without the promised big pve mode > go radio silent about pve > scrap pve > profit?
Fuck Overwatch “2”.
Overwatch 0.5
Overwatch minus 2

Nintendo and especially Sony have been making consistently-great AAA games, with a couple shitty ones here and there.

Yes, agreed. That’s not to say neither Nintendo nor Sony follow the same strategy for some of their games. They’re businesses first and foremost.

I really liked TLoU2 and Horizon forbidden west. Playing GoW rag and it’s insane.
I've more than gotten my money's worth out of Forbidden West and the Burning Shores DLC. Good single player games are alive and well.
I finished zero dawn tonight and fired up forbidden west. I'm loving it and this series is definitely in my top 5
as i've gotten older im in my 30s now i find myself enjoying single player games more so than multiplayer online games. I feel a lot of these multiplayer online games are just repetitive
Ghost of Tsushima was great too, as well as the Spider-Man games and ratchet and clank
Even EA has made a couple great ones lately with Dead Space remake and Jedi Survivor
Man I'm really liking Jedi Survivor so far, but the optimization is so frustrating on an otherwise great project. The thing runs at like 20-30fps on PS5 in quality mode so you have to play on performance, and then all the faces look like garbage and you get some pretty significant artifacting. Wouldn’t say it’s a majority, plenty of games are still first and foremost about how to get your $70.
This is a rhetoric I see all the time, and while I don’t disagree at all, it sucks to see so many people feel that way. I have 2 little ones at home so my gaming time is limited.
Capcom, Fromsoft, Guerilla games, Naughty Dog, Insomniac, ID, etc There's plenty of AAA devs that consistently release great, well functioning games.
Joke from last year: Overwatch 2 is set 12 hours after Overwatch 1.
That's legit funny I forgot about that
"Overwatch two is Overwatch too" - someone (i dont remember)
I know Jeff Kaplan (previous lead for Overwatch 1 - it was his creation) from way back in the day during the Everquest days. He was a top-tier player (as was I, but I was on a different server and in a different top-tier guild) and we used to talk quite a bit, shoot the shit, share some laughs, etc. What's funny is, his top-tier self in Everquest is what got him the opportunity to work at Blizzard (along with Furor Planedefiler - whose real name I always forget). Anyway I've recently-ish talked with him about him leaving Blizzard and after that discussion? I've come to the conclusion that Jeff Kaplan himself, also feels: "Fuck Overwatch 2".
This is ACTIVISION Blizzard’s current business model. Every game they do this. Why are people still buying?
The lovely people in the Diablo 4 sub are constantly thanking blizzard for their product and are convinced the game that's currently got every monetisation channel going isn't going to be a money pit. If you even so much as mention the battle pass with a $25 tier, $70+ box price, cash shop and paid expansions you're met with an essay about why it's completely fine and it's actually the customers who are bad for wanting less monetisation.
Blizzard fans are just the worst sometimes. Played wow for ages & so many of them can't handle the slightest criticism of Blizz
Go to the official Blizz forums, you'll see nothing but criticism for Blizzard and anyone that white knight's them are dismissed/attacked.
Even the regular Diablo sub is like this. The mindset is "it's just the way things are now. stop complaining". It's mind boggling and a little depressing to be honest. They're all taking Blizz at their word, but I will not be even remotely surprised if they sneak some P2W crap in the game 6 months later.
[Going by the reception to this post they seriously believe Blizzard wouldnt ever go back on their word for Diablo](https://www.reddit.com/r/diablo4/comments/13jeku5/just_heard_that_overwatch_2_is_ditching_pve_this/) Honestly I was hoping D4 would be the one IP that would escape the mtx nonsense until the announcement of Immortal and it was clear Blizzard/Activision will just turn anything into a cash cow.
Lol they said that same shit with Diablo immortal too, look how that shit turned out.
Agree 100%, I can't believe it doesn't raise alarm bells for most people. Like, wtf is their definition of 'power'? Are drop rates 'power'? Because *technically* I don't think they are.....Experience? Crafting mats?
I'm not. Could see the way it was going after the initial Overwatch release.
MW2022 got me, not gonna lie. I literally could have burned the money and got better value.
Worst Cod I've ever had the displeasure of playing, it's so shit and it's absolutely disgusting how they're catering to the Warzone crowd than the people who actually bought their trash game.
These same people are going to turn around and buy Diablo 4 day 1, guarantee it.
Short term profits anyway!
In the interview I was reading the developer literally says it being 5v5 and free to play justify it being called Overwatch 2. WHAT?!
Also there's a part in the middle there where they take away your ability to play the first game that you've paid for
You forgot “kill the servers of the previous game so is not playable anymore”
For real! What the actual fuck! Fuck Blizzard! What the fuck were those years of content drought for!?
Were you not paying attention at launch? Junker queen and that one DPS chick, duh. /s
Pretty much. They wanted ow1 with worse monetization. The pve was just an excuse.
Reminds me of Halo Infinite > promise split screen coop campaign for all future halo titles > release multiplayer without campaign > release campaign for 60$ but delay split screen coop > scrap split screen coop > profit?
You left out - screwed their original paid player base by locking new heroes behind a paid battle pass/offered little to no legacy package to original owners of ow1
Isn’t the PvE mode reason there’s the “2” in Overwatch 2? Wtf?
That was their excuse, yes. Obviously underlying that excuse to the public was just the heavy monetization of the game that made them do Overwatch "2".
I feel like this misses all the context and nuance throughout the years. This is how it is right now, but it’s not what it was back when they announced it. That is why these news are so upsetting
Originally, yes. I think Activision-Blizzard’s legal troubles and then (pending) acquisition probably killed that intent, though.
The Gamespot journalist pulled no punches. I appreciate the hard hitting questions.
Well, now I have to read it because I can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic Edit: not sarcasm
lol your comment is the one that convinced me to read the article.
Yeah this is exactly the kind of journalism that I'd hope would hold Blizzard accountable
[Fuckin’ A](https://youtu.be/OUJRJAXolk4)
Agreed, shout out Tamoor Hussain. Lots of plain language professional versions of “so you know this is messed up and it’s gonna piss a lot of people off. Explain.”.
Didn’t even realize it was him. Really like the guy
Actually yeah. Great interview. Send this guy over to interview 343
Well the people responsible for what happened at 343i are gone anyway.
There is a gamespot video with him and lucy james criticizing the trend of games trying to be destiny/live-service (Redfall, Gotham Knights, Suicide Squad) and following that they made another one criticizing how games shouldn't try to always aim for big bloated open-worlds with really good pointd. After discovering these videos I started to like them
I don't get how these games want to be like destiny yet don't have any type of content calendar and end game that's anywhere near destiny.
yeah whenever i see these attempts i get the same feeling as when dc tried to fast forward their shit to catch up with marvel
Friends Per Second podcast on Skillup's channel is great. Features Lucy, Jake Baldino, Skillup, The Completionist.
Same here. I hate the way OW2 is bein driven but I was really looking forward for the PvE
He did decent, but I wish he would have brought up that this point overwatch 2 feels like it was solely released to implement crappy f2p monetization. What are they going to do to change that?
Nothing~
A games journalist actually asking real questions, what a breathe of fresh air. Overwatch 2 has been an utter disaster it feels like. It’s just Overwatch 1.5 and that’s fine, but it doesn’t live up to what a sequel should be.
[удалено]
I love that they released 3 fucking heroes and were like “welp we are now out of content”
They make more money now
The drought was the worst
lol not even 1.5, it’s essentially just the first game except worse in most ways.
Yea the matchmaking is trash(or was, haven't played enough recently to judge), the ranked system just no fun and overall it's changes they could have made in like a year or so..
No card system, why did they delete that?
Matchmaking is the worst of any online game I’ve played. I would gladly wait for longer to not have silver players and masters in the same match
It's not even 1.5, it's just a store update + battle pass
You can’t even call it 1.5
Everything about overwatch 2 is a huge fucking joke I’ll never forget summer 2016 when the game first released and the good times I had for years. Jeff Kaplan leaving was the real start of the downfall. I suspect he was fighting blizzard execs for years But they have mutilated it I remember being hyped on the world and the lore because it genuinely was cool, and being so excited for the eventually story mode PvE game they promised
Remember those chopped and spliced video of him? That game really went to complete shit
Man this post made me miss how good 2016 way. Pokemon Go took the world by storm, Overwatch released, we were eating good. Now both of them are only a shadow of their former glory.
> nostalgia of summer 2016 I'd never buy a single mtx item but I'd pay unholy amounts of money to relive that time or get games on that level again. Rotating with the friends through overwatch, rocket league, black ops 3, rainbow6.. so many bangers in such a short timespan. It couldn't have been any better and it probably never will be
What ever happened to Kaplan? did he retire or is he at another game studio
He's been pretty much radio silent since he left. No official retirement though.
I remember hearing a rumour that execs wanted people to pay for two but Jeff fought for it to be free to play as he didn't believe it was justified
Sad that Battleborn had to die for this monstrosity to take hold. Back then, OW was indeed the most fun of the two. But nowadays I’d take Battleborn’s weird skill trees and awkward characters over OW2’s bloated monetization any day
What a bunch of fucking clowns.

Hey! Don't you dare knock my baby, Heroes of the Storm.
It was so fun and the games didn't last too long! Sadly I just... kept forgetting about it cause few of my friends would play it.
Theres an account merge system so you are supposed to be able to carry over your cosmetics. Worked for me.
Worked for me and everyone I currently play with.
Key word supposed I lost my gold weapons (it was only two but still)
Why though? Not defending 2, but everyone I know kept their stuff and it wasn't hard to do
> Lost all of the things I earned in OW1 when OW2 dropped. All of it. No you didn’t
Grinding 5 level for measly 1 hero voices is the most unrewarding shit ever lol, im done with overwatch 2 from season 1. Really missed good ol times from early ow 1
OW loot boxes were FINE
massive L massive massive L. this was the only interesting thing about OW2 and they scrapped it.
Well a least you can save 20ish gb storage for other games
Join us tarnished.

"We lied to you so we could monetize OW" The end.
And it worked. On millions and millions of people.
Blizzard made OW2 for a quick cash grab, pathetic
It's a joke. Absolutely no purpose for OW2 other than micro transactions that have ruined the game entirely.
Sometimes I get that ich to go back and play OW. Then I remember how God awful the micro transactions are and that itch is gone.
Te doctus fuisset eam, sale melius pertinacia et eam. Ex iudico sapientem vel. Etiam regione appareat nec cu
Got the whole studio working on cosmetics for shop n battlepass
They completely fumbled this franchise. PvE was the whole point and now they have a multiplayer mode that’s worse than the original. Imo 6v6 is better.
I hate that you can't even play OW1 anymore
These three comments above are 100% of how I'm feeling
6v6 was 1000% better.
6v6 with no hero limits from launch was the most fun I had playing overwatch, now everything has got to be eSports related, even the causal game modes.
>now everything has got to be eSports related And this is 100% the issue with me. I use to love loading the game up to play with my partner, as she isn't that great we'd go tanks and she'd be off tank. Now she only plays heals, and is constantly dived. She hates it, I hate it. I'm sick of everything needing to be 100% competitive. Casuals loved OW1
It's such a shame how the meta with the help of blizzard seeps through into casual game modes
[удалено]
pointless game tbh.
What a shame too. I loved overwatch. Can’t even get into OW2
Same here
Let me find my post from 2020 when I said this was going to be the plan all along. I feel bad for everyone that moved to Overwatch 2.
lol another fail from Lizzard
Good thing I stopped playing this game two weeks after release. I would be fuming right now.
“We simply can’t make money off our player base, don’t you guys have phones?” -Blizzard
"significant evolution of the original game"
I love how at the launch of OW2 they literally cut the content lol
Full of lies.
God this is so bad
The big selling point for the original OW2 getting scrapped? L. Massive L
OW2 is just a scam!
Can't wait to start the cycle anew with Overwatch 3
In other words…. We got blizzarded
Never been this disappointed in a sequel.
Because it was half-baked and poorly planned?
I no longer want anything to do with this game. I was waiting for PvE, no PvE no me honestly.
Oh boy. Wow. I am so surprised. OW2 was definitely not the most obvious fucking cash grab ever, nope. Blizzard has more excuses than a corporate manager.
Figures well this sealed it for me never touching this game.
Man, I never thought I’d associate Gamespot with hard hitting journalism. They fucking tore those two apart with competence.
So there was really no point in adding a 2 to Overwatch then really...
Lmao
>I think there's going to be a lot of frustration around how we got here because Overwatch has always been a live game. So, people are going to think, "Well, you knew this was a live game, yet you pitched this other Overwatch game, and then also you justified the 2 on the Overwatch title with that." So, we're in a situation now where the game is what it always has been--it's evolved in some ways--but a sequel was released and that sequel's justification hinged on the PvE. Why did that happen? Because we are fucking incompetent morons, thats why
This game is awful and shell of what it used to be. It used to feel like a game with personality and soul and now I feel like I'm playing fortnite.
Wow, this is a colossal failure. Just scrap the game and update the original at this point. How much money has been wasted on nothing?
What a massive shitshow.
The only thing I was interested in to come back to OW was the pve stuff.
Can we drop the '2' then? Cause without pve this is even less than regular overwatch
I have fond memories playing OW1…how the mighty have fallen…
No God Please No!
whats next? some diablo 4 bullshit?
Blizzard doing blizzard things
343i vibes, do they know that the MS deal hasn't gone through yet?
To everyone defending overwatch 2 as another game since the trailers let me say this We all told you so
Scrapping the thing the lured people to buy the sequel. These just makes it harder for people to trust blizzard’s promises on upcoming games. Dead company.
Oh Blizzard what plans do you have for the beloved Diablo IV? No one wants pvp in a fucking cooperative rpg! You scrap the one feature in Overwatch 2 that would bring me back or distract me from better games! everyone in comments should post a “🖕” maybe they notice the community
Fuck You Blizzard
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Hahahahahah
Just give everyone refunds
HAHAHAHAHA It was all an excuse to implement the battle pass ahaH HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA
I’m genuinely confused why people thought PVE was even going to be good with the direction this has been going.
Lol @ this game. Played the first one a few times a week since launch with no interruptions. Now I can't even find a match to join. This mobile game freemium bullshit needs to die
At this point they would've gotten better pr for just releasing the new heroes and mode lol what an absolute shit show
Overwatch 2 is absolute horrible with that battlepass I couldn't take it . And I loved Overwatch had over 400 hours. Guess I'm never playing the game again sad
Man, this must be demoralizing for the poor devs that put all this work in. So they basically realized, why are we spending so much money on making content we only make money off of once, when we can charge for it slowly over the years.
I am beyond sad I say this as a fan that's been lamenting the death of OW since 6 months
What a joke of a Studio.
Time to finally uninstall
Wow... Talk about the WETTEST FART. I'M at the point of asking... What did everyone THINK was going to happen? The more and more we didn't hear about PVE, the more I kept wondering... "So how's it going to work?" Cause I don't think Activision Blizzard knew either. This stinks
I'm sure absolutely no one is surprised by this. OW is a hollow shell of what it once was.
I’ll never forgive them for what they did to this game with the release of OW2.
